As this promo begins, our attention is focused on a large digital clock on a stained white wall. The flashing 3:30 AM on the digital clock on the wall let's us know that we're officially in the early morning hours. Our only sights are the wall and our only sounds are the sounds of somebody clanging and banging away in a gym. There's no intense grunting of course (which I suppose is probably a detriment) but there is the sounds of heavy breathing and metal getting moved around. As we get away from the wall, we see that the workout taking place is none other than Joey NOX getting in a work out on the calf machine. A sweaty Joey NOX is working out on the calf raiser and looks pretty intense as he's doing so, perhaps a sign that with the Carlos match likely underway, he's ready for the next step in his training. Whatever the set count or whatever the rep is, NOX seems to be finishing up as he deaccelerates and slowly lets his legs rest. Joey NOX removes the earbuds from his ears and leans back in the seat, taking one final deep breath. He sees the camera in front of him and attempts to make eye contact with you, the viewer at home. NOX smirks, shakes his head and with a somewhat tired tone in his voice, he begins to speak as calmly as possible.
NOX: December 26th. According to that massive clock Alex keeps in this damn gym, it's way beyond the witching hour. Plenty of people are at home sleeping. They've spent their Christmas with their loved ones, enjoying the presents they earned throughout the year. They're laying next to that special someone or thinking about that special someone in their dreams. Right now the entire world sleeps but not Joey NOX. No see, a guy like me is WELL aware that I'm not the most gifted athlete out there. I can't jump out of the gym like an Alex LeBlanc, I can't lift a house like Manik Mercer or Patrick Slaughter, I don't have God-like cardio like Razer which allows me to be a lout and still be on top of the world. A guy like me has to find those edges elsewhere.
That's why as the world sleeps, I'm here in a gym alone, sweating my balls off and getting in EVERY single workout I can. It's why there truly are no off days.
Joey NOX slowly rises from his seat and shoves his heaphones into his pocket. It may have been a while since we've seen him in this capacity but the sigh from NOX's lips suggests a level of satisfaction with his workout. He shakes himself out a bit and then turns to the camera, taking a step towards it. Each step he makes seems to thud louder and louder as the red faced Joey NOX walks toward the camera. The closer he gets, the more focused the look on his face appears to be. As NOX is walking, he begins to talk in a calm and composed manner, his eyes looking everywhere but the camera currently.
NOX: You know working out at 3 AM, the whole grind of the business, it makes me think. It's just you, man. Just you and the machines that laugh at your weakness. You can go crazy in a place like this if you focus too hard so you gotta think. Today, I've been doing a lot of thinking. To tell you the truth, I've been thinking about..... construction. Yeah, construction. See Carlos, friends, there's a saying in Hollywood that I've heard used in pro wrestling often enough to know it applies here too. It's, in fact, a bit more about society at large if you really think about it.
We like to build you up----then we like to tear you down. Then we do it all over again.
Joey pauses for a second to let the cold air of the gym and the deepness of his words reverrberate for a while. With a little smile, he nods his head and then using his arms, he works to illustrate his point.
NOX: A bit like construction, you see. A bit like houses. We build them up, we love them, we worship them and then? We destroy them. We rip them apart. We pick at imperfections until there is NOTHING left to pick at. In the words of Alex LeBlanc, we create heroes and then turn them into King Kong, throwing shit at them for the smallest things while they climb the empire state building that we've made in our minds. We create. We destroy. We repeat the whole process. Just take a look at the landscape of PRW and tell me I'm wrong, Carlos.
Think about Patrick Slaughter! Arguably the best wrestler going today. Remember when Patrick Slaughter was coming up in the game and everybody was trying to find 1,000,000 reasons why he wouldn't succeed? How we all wanted a great black athlete who simply wanted to provide for his lone child to the best of his abilities? Then we watched with great eyes and glee as he improved and people started to say he would be the guy despite the odds? Then remember when he overcame the odds and became THE guy in PRW? He shattered the glass ceiling we had all hoped he would! It lasted for a while and then what happened? "The Onslaught is boring. Patrick Slaughter is boring. I can't relate to him. We hate Ata because she's always rright. We hate his friends etc etc." We tore Slaughter apart and then when it became apparent that there were groups out there who wanted OUR guy as much as wanted to destroy him? We built him back up. I was there in August when Slaughter re-signed with PRW and the roof came off the place. We built, we destroyed, we rebuilt.
Alex LeBlanc and Sean Aries once represented the faces of PRW oppression. They were held down for their imperfections. We enjoyed seeing them rise because of their flaws, we lived through their weaknesses. Then when they hit the top? We used those same flaws to tear them down. "Sean Aries is too small! He's too silly! He smokes too much weed!" we all said as we burnt out Aries merchandise and let the man who led us out of the Gunnar and Caje and Quiz Era wilt and falter under the weight of the world. Then after a while, when we felt like he had eaten enough of our collective shit, we welcomed him back with open arms and told him all was forgiven. Then we talk about potentially the GOAT in Alex LeBlanc. Remember all those angry letters? "Alex LeBlanc is too out of control! He's too small! He's too damaged!" We watched a man who made it to the top on talent, rage and determination alone get crushed because we simply couldn't handle a guy that rageful and determined to be the best. It's funny! We all said Alex LeBlanc's personality and headstrong attitude made him an anti-hero----and then when we got tired of him, we used those same qualities to paint him as a malcontent. Funny indeed, huh?
Hell it's already happening to Razer now! Razer came in here and he said from the beginning that he cared about nobody but himself. Look at his actions from the first day he was in the Asylum until now. We all cheered and clapped when he was picking on the Siege or making fun of Ace Andrews or LJ Summers and we all said "Oh Razer! Isn't he just a lovable scamp!" Now though when he's poking fun at, say, La Chispa or Nina Wagner or Ata Tatupu, we say "I WISH SOMEBODY WOULD SHUT THAT GUY UP!" We'll all secretly sit around and when he loses, we'll all run to twitter and say "SEE! I'M GLAD SOMEBODY FINALLY HUMBLED THAT PRICK!" Why? Because we built him up and now we've got to tear him down! THEN WHEN THE NEXT ASSHOLE COMES AROUND, WE'LL SIT AROUND AND BEG FOR HIM TO STOP HIM! BUILD UP! TEAR DOWN! BUILD UP AGAIN! RINSE, WASH AND REPEAT!
By now, Joey NOX has worked himself into a shoot, brother into a more fired up state. The bass in his voice has returned. With each name he drops, his eyes get more and more intense. Each example, designed to drive home this point, comes with a fire and a passion into his words. Joey pauses slighly and then using his finger to point at the camera, NOX continues on.
NOX: And Carlos, whether you wish to think about it or not, it happened TO you as well. When you first came in, it was like you were a new puppy in the house we all call PRW. You made mistakes but you were just so new and fresh that everybody made excuses. We all loved the Jesus Freak! We loved the Celestial Dive! You were so naive and in a way, that was cute! Then as time went along, we started slowly taking you apart. You were too plain---and so you tried to spice it up with the Renegades. Then you were TOO wild and reckless. Then you tried to settle it down and people felt you weren't being yoursef. See Carlos we build you up and then piece by piece, brick by brick, moment by moment, we took you apart. We...we enjoyed watching you suffer. We enjoyed watching Carlos Cruz realize that everything that made him THINK we loved him was now the very same qualities we picked at. Then FINALLY they SHITCANNED you out of PRW. You were gone! You were COMPLETELY torn ascunder by the very same people who put you on that pedestal to begin with.
Now to your credit, you wound up back in PRW. You worked your way back into the mix and for that you do deserve credit. Whether people want to admit it or not, Carlos has earned the right to be back here in PRW. You've done EVERYTHING right to get back where you are now. You've been the guy who has done everything possible in the right way to get to this spot you're at now and to reap those rewards. Like the story goes, you've been built back up again and now you're right on the verge of FINALLY crossing over onto that next level. Unfortunately for you, Carlos? It's time to tear you down again. It's time to destroy you. And I'm the best demolition man in the business. I'm going to take you apart, Carlos. I'm going to systematically destroy you because this is how it works. Build up. Destroy.
The only question is will I even leave enough of you to rebuild again?
Joey NOX scoffs and smirks. He blows a kiss to the camera and then walks off-screen, the camera going back to look at the time on the wall. 3:37 AM.
