Is it X-Division yet?
By Harry Cusack

Are Mercer, Cruz, Owens, Lynch and Bane the future X-Division scene?

With Takato Kazama breaking Sebastian Cobain’s record run on the X-Division Title, the Chi Town Nerd stands on largely unopposed ground these days. Canary Kid helped propel The Onslaught member into immortal status, but the title can’t live by Kato alone, even if he is now the heir apparent greatest X-Division Champion in PRW history; he will eventually have to drop the strap to someone, and that someone will be over more than just about anyone else on the roster because of it.
While some might argue that leaving it on Kazama is the best move, a stronger counter argument is that doing so puts PRW in a similar situation as Impact Wrestling and WWE, which are a tail spin on building talent. By letting the title hang on one dominant waist, PRW wastes their ability to promote from within, especially when their talent has self-built themselves up by their own merits.

Right now, five names come to mind when the words “self-propelled” and “push” are read in print or heard in regards to PRW Talent.

Manik Mercer, Carlos Cruz, Alexander Owens, Reese Lynch, and John Bane have piqued collective fanbase interests as being the next generation of a future X-Division scene. Their mutual self-motivation of edgy gimmicks has put them consistently on the map and in the pushable cross-hairs. Add in returning acts that have been present in the X-Division from the last couple years-even Alex LeBlanc, Razer, Patrick Slaughter and Sean Aries wouldn’t be ashamed to leave the Undisputed grind for the potentially robust field that’s in the process of rebirth.

What each brings to the formation is important.

Manik Mercer is the first to be regarded. With roughly a year on the roster, the man has made an impact in the final run of the Cyanide Season and the now defunct title, fought and routed pre-established talent, lost to put over others who had the head nod, and captured the Net Title from Alice Harris to help maintain the title’s pedigreed mix. His in ring work is sincere, aggressive and at times profound, making him not just a consideration for the X-Division scene, but a key ingredient to its future success. The man makes a body slam look innovatively hardcore.

Carlos Cruz brings experience, controversy, high flying and incumbent recognition to PRW’s audience; he’s been in an off and on holding pattern with the company, but has always been active, relevant, and consistent. Pushable ? Always. Carlos Cruz is the necessary underdog, and special interest. In a gamut of bad-asses, a$$holes and psychopaths who don’t give two damns, he’s a charismatic face with the religious hook. Some Carlos Cruz fans terming themselves “True Believers” these days is a good case and point that now is the time to graduate the man into the second tier, and fast. His up and downs haven’t harmed him yet; that’s longevity and sturdiness, and PRW needs that now more than ever.

Alexander Owens is a holiday gift, and miracle, if there ever was one. The man has come into his own right on comeback. And it isn’t that his gimmick has changed, no, it has simply gotten teeth and a fervent vocal quality. Owens has dope on the mic, and his in ring work is a minimalistic simplicity that is both fulfilling and gratifying. He’s a straightforward powerhouse who speaks shockingly well. Think Ryback meets the Godwynns, meets Jake Roberts’ more soft spoken nuances. The mix is potent, and earned the young man a win over Mercer on the tail of a Net victory against Alice. Prime real-estate in the wrestling world. This positions him as a great X-Division foil when the tiers shift.

Reese Lynch both inspires confidence, reminds us of great moments with the late Lucia Tafur, and sobers us to how long one can hold the brass ring. The Alaskan was pushed to the moon, humbled by his onscreen girlfriend, Alice Harris, and summarily fed to Decade (now known to be Canary Kid). He hasn’t seen much activity since, save in the iPPV scenes, but that will likely change in the coming year. He is hands down one of the most understated acts of in ring brilliance since Lance Storm, but with twice the charisma. The man is greatness waiting to happen on the X-Division level, which would be one of the best permanent homes for him. While some argue he is not “Alpha” enough for the Undisputed peaks, no one argues that he would be ideal, and necessary for the X-Division Championship scene that is more dependent on performance rather than looks and mic work.

Then there’s John Bane…

He’s an effective personality that’s seen a lot of work. Polished, frenetic, off the handle energy that sweeps in like a storm and leaves the crowd emotionally wrecked when he leaves. The man has been employed a long time for that alone. He understands the details and ticks of his own gimmick, knowing when to sell, undersell, and no sell for crowd reaction, it also doesn’t hurt that he’s big; the man can toss anyone around on the current roster, barring a handful that stand toe to toe with his stature or dwarfs it completely. He’s a shoe in if he stays on contract, stays active, and stays patient. While he’s walked at the top of other establishments, he will have to work all the way up like anyone else on the PRW payroll, though his background will speed him along, he still will have to eat the fur to get the pussy.

But, who’s most ready now?

Mercer is primed, potently present, and has the momentum of a locomotive. The second would be Carlos Cruz, who, has longevity and activity with the company since he’s signed. He always brings the crowd, and has right now an underdog appeal. These workers are ready to serve now!

What HR and Writing need to do is pivot Mercer in the coming months with another feud and some more activity on all the shows. Carlos needs to stop cheering NOX and start combing the undercard for momentum. Again, HR and Writing need to see to this. A close third is Lynch, who simply needs main show booking to continue where he left off. The drama he has with Alice is still compelling, and perfect, and should hopefully resume when they return to screen.

Owens and Bane should (hopefully) come up right after with proper booking, and giving the men time to speak pieces and develop. Bane has to make Bane function within the PRW framework, while Owens needs to turn in more ring time to the crowd and management to prove he’s everything everyone thinks he is.

What do you think?

Tool Chest
Dixie Lanford’s recent “peaks”
A Q&A with Paola Altieri by Marcus Callow

Marcus: Before we begin, I would like to open with a preamble. In the world of professional wrestling, sometimes a screw up is as dynamic as intent. Nothing so truly makes this point as Jake Roberts’ DDT, a trip created a legacy that lives on and will continue to do so passed its inadvertent innovator. That being said, moments in professional wrestling can be the same way; a word spoken off script, a spur of the moment ad lib, or even a very clear but well received mistake can change the direction of a character, making history.

So, with that being said, allow me to introduce Paola Altieri, aka Dixie Lanford to the wrestling world.

Dixie: Hello, Marcus, hello PRW.

Marcus: Thanks for taking the time this holiday season to sit down and give insight on the recent developments in PRW.

Dixie: No problem.

Marcus: So, following my preamble, what happened? That post PRW 24/7 moment on 11/15 when you took the mic and silenced the crowd in a very…let’s say taboo way?

Dixie: Flashing the crowd? It was originally meant to be a tease of sorts; I was supposed to open up my top and reveal a tight tube top underneath, no flesh, just a hook to get their attention. Problem is, I don’t tend to wear anything beneath my top in the first place; I’m a sizeable “B” so I tend to free boob it.

Marcus: Thus, you inadvertently flashed thousands of people.

Dixie: The day will live in infamy.

Marcus: Some are calling it Dixigate or Boobigate. Thoughts?

Dixie: I call it fucking up…in style I guess, but the reaction media wise says something opposite. I’m the first female wrestler of a professionally run wrestling organization to bare flesh on live television since Ashley Massaro. Apparently, the only thing holding me back was modesty.

Marcus: Feelings?

Dixie: If it was truly in the cards, I guess I might feel a little whored out, since I simply screwed up the presentation of what I was supposed to do in a “good way” I guess I should count my blessings and go with the new momentum.

Marcus: Not that you have ever been dead in the water.

Dixie: No, every fed has picked up on my in ring ability and my way of connecting with the audience. I’ve been one of the most sought after midcarder acts in wrestling, and I believe the reason PRW signed me back up was because they knew they could market me better, and make me more than just a midcarder.

Marcus: Does that mean you and NOX are shipping to Christmas Carnage?

Dixie: I cannot confirm that, honestly; the writing team and booking are keeping NOX and his actual return under wraps as much as possible. I have no idea if I’m simply holding up 24/7 and Red Eye when Christmas Carnage rolls around, or if I’m opening the holiday curtain.

Marcus: Is NOX actually coming back then at all or just being teased?

Dixie: I literally can’t tell you. I don’t know.

Marcus: Going back to the 15th, what do you think the long term is on the inadvertency of your actions?

Dixie: I have no idea. My heat has increased, and my fanbase. I’m proffered as a heel, but my direction lends itself to pity, and we all know where that tends to bring a character before long.

Marcus: Usually right back to Babyface.

Dixie: Exactly.

Marcus: How do you see your in ring character?

Dixie: Lanford is very much what my mother’s gimmick was; salt of the earth, wholesome, and unwholesome in that wholesome sort of way. I have the freedom to be sexy, a little loose but oddly reserved, and prudish too. Dixie is welcoming and seductive, a peep show that up until now never showed too much. After the 15th, after Salt Lake City Utah, I’ll never be able to work the character entirely the same way; she bared her breasts to quiet down a rowdy crowd…that’s out there now, permanently.

Marcus: If you could take it back, would you?

Dixie: I don’t entertain that train of thought. What’s done is done, and I have to live with it, work with it in the times ahead; and at least at first blush, it seems to have helped me more than harmed me. I’m the talk of the internet in wrestling circles.

Marcus: Why is that you think?

Dixie: Conditioning; the American audience is still used to titty shows from female wrestlers. And I’m not poking at anyone’s product or calling names. Plain and simple, sex sells; otherwise Vince McMahon wouldn’t have been so successful in serving it up. The big difference between myself, and say Terri Runnels or Candice Michelle is a foundation forged in Japan, Mexico, India and the indies here in the states. I was a wrestler first, and a topless gig just recently. But the men immediately latched to it, and now I’m a hotter commodity than ever.

I’m in that slutty/badass territory with the likes of Trish Stratus, Velvet Sky, and Amy Dumas.

Marcus: What is your intent coming off from all this?

Dixie: A title. Politics and pro wrestling are one in the same culture. While I glitter, I’m gold, and I won’t glitter forever; I need to snag a strap and some more wins before and after that reign to solidify me on a certain medium. I need to make sure that my only pushes are forwards and that there is a line not far behind that I can be pushed back to and no further. I’d hate to get over only for me to suffer the same fate as Zach Ryder and Heath Slater.

Marcus: One last question.

Dixie: Shoot.

Marcus: Do you see yourself as another Sylvia Wrath?

Dixie: I’m sorry, but I don’t follow you.

Marcus: If this incident sees your pushed sustained enough to bring you to the Undisputed title circles, and you hypothetically go over on whoever said champion may be at the time, would you see yourself as the replacement for Sylvia Wrath, the next Sylvia Wrath?

Dixie: No.

Marcus: No?

Dixie: Sylvia Wrath is Sylvia Wrath, and I doing what I’m doing now with NOX will not put me in her place. There is no replacing her or repeating her success; I can no sooner be Syl than Mercer could Mark Graves. Similar in some right? Sure, but at the end of the day PRW knows they can’t repeat past successes, and that it’s foolish to try to force it.

Marcus: Fair point; thank you for being with us.

Dixie: Pleasure was all mine.
