-Sitting on a rock at the top of Summit Mountain in Big Bear Lake, California, Alex LeBlanc is in a pair of Nike Running Pants and a white track jacket. It's been the way he has done things for years now. Still, with another matchup on the horizon, LeBlanc has company this time. As the camera pans around, we see Cassie Rial in her own Nike get-up, a pair of those girly running shorts and a sports bra adoring her figure as the two rest at the mid-way point of the mountain.-
Rial: You do this every other day?
Alex, nodding as he rests his hands on his knees: Every other day. It's peaceful. It's relaxing. The thin, mountain air is good for you. Once you get acclimated, it gives you an advantage. If you can keep your wind and wits about you here, you'll be able to keep it when there's an opponent bearing down his weight and his own goals and aspirations down on you.
Rial: is everything with you about the next opponent? The next victory? Damn dude, don't you ever take a minute to enjoy the things around you? What you have built for yourself? Jeez, Alex. Let's share a beer sometime or something. You're wound too tight.
-Alex, bristling at his younger counterpart, stands up and looks at her, dusting himself off.-
Alex, snidely: Yeah sure, we can get that beer whenever you want. Just have your parents sign that permission slip and we'll make it happen.
Rial: Dude! Ouch! What the hell! I was just pointing out a truth.
-Turning from Rial, LeBlanc walks toward the ski lifts that are operational year-round on the mountain, able to take you all the way to the summit overlooking all of the city and the lake. Rial calls out to him, not wanting to have offended him.-
Rial, sighing: Alex, wait. Come on...
Alex, looking back: You coming or not?
-Rial just sighs and mutters to herself. With Nebraska pals'ing around with Nox all the time, Cassie is rather lonely every once in a while. Angered and annoyed company is better than no company though, so she follows LeBlanc and in a few short moments, both veteran and relative newcomer are sitting on a chair lift next to each other. The silence between them awkward, Alex finally breaks the silence and starts talking to her slowly and softly.-
Alex: My great grandfather is of Algerian and Moroccan descent. For lack of a better term, he was a Moor, a man with no place in the world. In order to give a better life to his family, including my very own grandfather, the man who would end up raising me, he moved from the stability of his life in Algiers and he crossed a metaphorical and literal ocean of shit to get himself and his family to Marseille, France.
For years, my great-grandfather toiled as a shipbuilder, taking great pride in the local industry, feeling loyalty to the port and the dockworkers who helped provide his family with a new life, new opportunities and new aspirations. He grinded, Cassie. Everyday, for every moment of his life.
When my great-grandfather was getting up there in age, my grandfather, wanting to provide a better future for his own kids and repay the endeavor undertaken by his father, moved a family from Marseille to the outskirts of Montreal, Quebec. The family, after traveling for weeks, found themselves in Quebec with 100 francs to their name, scrapped by the first winter huddled together in whatever winter coats they could find for warmth, worked odd jobs and toiled mercilessly until my grandfather found a job with the Canadian National Railway. He would become a Provincial Director of Operations, would spend 35 years in the position and he stayed there until the day he died... He fucking clawed every day of his life as well, Cassie.
-Rial looks at LeBlanc, affected by his words, by his passion, and by the fact he's sharing this with her, and puts her hand on his shoulder, suddenly starting to get it.-
Rial: Wow... Alex, I'm-... I'm sorry. i didn't know. I didn't understand-
Alex, cutting her off: My great-grandfather and my grandfather busted their ass day in and day out so that future generations wouldn't have to. My grandfather woke up at 4:30AM every morning and punched a time-card and brought a lunchpail so that he could raise his grandson, and provided a home for his daughter-in-law when his own abusive son ran the fucking coup because things got too tough.
In my family, we don't sit and look around. We don't rest on our laurels, Cass. We embrace the grind, every day. Every moment. Day in and day out.
-Cassie seems taken aback at the statement, but not wanting to offend Alex further, she takes a chance, going forward with her line of questioning.-
Cassie: But look at everything you have. Look at the success you've obtained. You can stop now, Alex. Why continue to push and punish yourself. Your legacy is cemented. You're a Hall of Famer.
Alex: it's not about that. It's about paying it forward. It's about imprinting on my son and daughter an ideal of hard work and dedication that they'll take and use in the future. It's about instilling values and a moral compass. It's about embracing the fucking grind, because somewhere, anywhere, there's someone out there willing to work harder than you to be better than you. Because somewhere, anywhere, there's someone willing to get up earlier than you, work harder than you and strive for more than you to ensure they're successful. You gotta WANT it, Cassie. It doesn't just fall into your lap. This isn't so much about a legacy anymore...
Cassie, getting it: .. It's about teaching.
Alex, nodding: I'm teaching right now.
-Cassie looks at Alex, and she's genuinely touched, but as much as she tries to hide it, she can't and the lip trembles a bit.-
Cassie: ...Why me?
Alex: Because beyond all the jokes and the comments about your age and inexperience, there's a girl who WANTS this. Because even though you have all the security in the world with your parents success and relative wealth, you took a chance to be this. You could have been taken care of for life, more so than anybody else in the company, but you chose this life. You chose the foxhole.
Cassie: ...Just like you did with your grandfather. You could have been set for life and gotten a cushy desk job at Canadian National...
Alex, impressed: Who told you that?
Cassie: I have sources. I do research...
Alex, chuckling: Damnit, Nebs.
-The chair lift coming up over the horizon, you can start to see the edges of the lake from within the trees. Rising higher and higher, we're suddenly gifted with the view of the whole city, the lake, the million-dollar homes and the picturesque nature of Big Bear Lake that keeps LeBlanc coming out here every fight camp.-
Alex, while Cassie looks out, using the view as a metaphorical aid: Don't get it twisted, Cassie. You have your moments when you enjoy it. You reach the top of the mountain and the view is tremendous. There's the houses and the beauty and the wonder of it all. The thing is? Eventually, you have to come down from the mountain. It's the nature of things. You can't stop up here forever.
People like me though, we're constantly trying to stay at the top of the mountain. We're constantly running up that hill again, day after day, month after month. They day you stop making your way up the hill?
-Cassie cuts Alex off, finishing the sentence, knowing where it's going.-
Cassie: Is the day you forget the view...
-Wrapping his arm around Cassie's shoulder, Alex brings her in in a brotherly hug. Cassie naturally just burrows into his shoulder, and in that moment, a bond is formed. The two sitting there at the top of the mountain, enjoying the sight, Alex laughs a bit and whispers so that Cassie hears him.-
Alex: Keep climbing, Cass. Always keep climbing. Don't ever willingly come back down.
-Cassie nods a bit, looking out over the lake houses, the boats docked at the boat slips, the massive trees.-
