Not for the first time, Takato found himself in a studio. Said studio was in the headquarters of BBC Scotland. As he leaned back against the office chair, donned in blue jeans, a black t-shirt that bore PRW’s logo, and a pair of white sneakers, he was seated across from PRW Dirstsheet’s own Chloe Bly. The woman from Alaska, who was dressed in a pair of black jeans and a white Clash of The Titans T-shirt, was also seated on an office chair. Both of them had headsets on with microphones set up between them. Of course, on the table, in front of Takato next to a can of Fortified, lay the PRW X-Division Championship. Though this was for a podcast, cameras were rolling for the sake of showing a recording on PRW’s site. Once she was ready to begin, Chloe leaned forward and began to speak.
“Hello, PRW Galaxy,” Chloe said. “This is PRW Dirstsheets’ own Chloe Bly, live from BBC Scotland, and I’m here with none other than Takato Kazama, Onslaught member and current PRW X-Division Champion. How are you today?”
At that, Takato leaned forward. “I’m good,” he said. “Glad to see that Onslaught has a lot of fans in Scotland still rocking with us since Caged In. Not as much as Bella, though, but that’s to be expected.” Takato smiled slightly.
“Good to hear. Well, I have a lot on the plate for you for today. First of all, how are you feeling about Clash of The Titans? Do you think it will do better than Summerfest?”
“We’re not setting the bar very high, are we?” Takato chuckled, showing that he was (semi-)joking. “Nah, I think the show will be great. There’s been an influx of new talent, which is always a good thing for a promotion in the long-term. Plus, Patrick Slaughter gets a crack at punching in LJ’s stupid face. Who doesn’t want to see that?”
“Well, there’s one match on the card that ties into you. It’s Alex LeBlanc versus Bella Quinn. If Alex wins that match, he gets to cash in against whoever walks out of Clash of The Titans XI as the PRW Undisputed Champion for that same title. However, should Bella win, she’ll be cashing in against you. Was this something that you expected?”
“No, not really,” Takato admitted with a shake of his head. “In all honesty, when I heard that this was happening, I couldn’t help but think that if someone told me four years ago that that match would be going down, I would have laughed. I never had anything against Bella… well, not since she stopped associating herself with that New Cut team anyway… but the Bella you see now is light years ahead of the Bella from back, considering…” Takato paused for a few moments, looking down at the desk in thought. He then looked back at Chloe. “…everything, really.”
“That is true,” Chloe said with a nod of “Should Bella win that match, would your strategy have to change when you step in the ring with her?”
“My strategy is always open for change.” As he said this, Takato shrugged. “Should Bella win, I’ll be doing for her what I do for every opponent – pick up DVDs with footage of her matches on it, study them, and keep what I see in mind as I get ready so I can adjust accordingly and prepare.” The Manga Freak tilted his head briefly. “It’s all I can do, really.”
“Now, let’s talk about the flipside… sort of. Alex LeBlanc is looking at a chance for the PRW Undisputed Championship. He made some noise with his words about Patrick Slaughter. Patrick never really responded directly. Alex said it was fear. Is that the case?”
“Hell no,” Takato said with a laugh. “What people have to understand about Patrick is that on any given day, there’s going to be a lot of stuff on his plate. As such, he tends to prioritize. Whether Alex liked it or not, Patrick’s concern was The Siege because that’s who was in front of him at the time.”
“Do you think Patrick Slaughter versus Alex LeBlanc will happen down the line?”
“I’d be surprised if it doesn’t happen this year. There’s too much money there. The front office wants it. Both Patrick and Alex want it, and the fans practically crave it.”
“Well, this would be the perfect segue into a topic that has been discussed as of lately,” Chloe stated. “Because of the piece on Bella’s Belles, written by Dirtsheets’ own Dan Flouride, the fans of PRW have been in the middle of discussions. I know that some wrestlers are rather divisive over Bella’s Belles. Kim Kaos believe them to be a cancerous group that hurts professional wrestling, and quite a few wrestlers agree with that sentiment off the record. However, the group has quite a few defenders, including Ata Tatupu, which is surprising since she has shown time and time again that she’s more than willing to tell off fans and writers alike.”
“Haha, true,” Takato said with a knowing smile.
“But, now I have to ask – have the fans always been divisive topic amongst wrestlers in the back?”
“To a point,” Takato replied as he reached out for his can of Fortified. After taking a sip of drink, he set the can down and continued. “The relationship between wrestlers and fans is a love-hate relationship, just like every other relationship that involves and employee… or contractor… and customer/consumer. Because of that, things can get contentious between wrestlers and fans. So, because of that, there are folks in the back who are like ‘Don’t screw with the fans, they put money in our pockets, so let them say or write what they want’. And then you have some guys who are like ‘They’re not putting their bodies on the line on a nightly basis like we are, so maybe they should chill’.”
“So, what category do you fall into?”
“Sometimes Column A, sometimes Column B.” With a tilt of his head, Takato raised his eyebrows. “It used to be just Column A, but certain events, like the Joey/Patrick situation and …that event, made me realize why people the people in Column B are in Column B. There are times when a fan, or, as Wild Hearts superfan Valerie Cross pointed out, fanbases just flat out demand that a certain wrestler should do things a certain way, and if you don’t, they’ll trash you.”
“Do you believe that, sometimes, a fan crosses boundaries at times?”
“Yes, I do,” Takato replied with an emphatic nod. “Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to find out if that’s the case. Like, some boundaries are obvious. If you’re a wrestler and you physically attack a fan for no good reason, most of everyone in the back is going to look at you and be like ‘Bruh, dick move’. On the flipside, as a fan, if you decide to be an idiot and interfere in a match, don’t expect much sympathy, if any, should you get beaten up.
“However, some cases are rather… grey. Like, imagine if a waiter or waitress is being bitched out by a customer because he brought out the wrong order, and this happened during an extremely busy night where orders are coming in rather slowly. And then the waiter or waitress tells that customer off. Who do you side with in that scenario? Some people may side with the customer since, you know, they’re paying. On the other hand, some may side with the waiter or waitress since they’re the ones who have to try and do their job under such conditions. It’s like that when you have fans who trash a wrestler, prompting the wrestler to go off on them, or vice versa.”
“Interesting,” Chloe said with a nod. “Now, Sierra, a member of Bella’s Belles, noted that Ata was hung out to dry after… you know… and during the fallout of that event, Onslaught fans turned on Sylvia. And even to this day, some Onslaught fans aren’t really warm on The Wild Child. Are you surprised by any of that?”
“I’m not really too surprised by it,” Takato replied with a dejected sigh as he rubbed his forehead with his right hand. “As Valerie Cross stated, a lot of Wild Hearts fans tend to turn on a Wild Hearts’ wrestler because they went against the grain. As for Sylvia being disliked by Onslaught fans… I think a lot of it has to do with her fans, to tell the truth.”
At that, Chloe leaned forward. “In what way, exactly?”
“Let me give you an example – I’m a Chicago Bears fan. As expected, I hate the Lions, The Packers, and The Vikings since, you know, they’re the division rivals of the Bears. But, I also hate the Patriots. And a lot of that has to do with the fact that I feel some type of way about their fans. And that’s the same reason why I hate Chelsea with a passion. I’m not the biggest soccer guy, though I check in every now and again, but with the way their fans act, screw them forever.
“A person’s or group’s fans, in my opinion, can have an effect on how other people may look at them because, fair or not, we judge that person or group by his, her, or their fans. Since a lot of Sylvia’s fans hung Ata out to dry and attacked her, I think a lot of Onslaught fans looked at all of that and was like ‘You know what? Fuck Sylvia’. And, fortunately in some cases and unfortunately in cases like what I said earlier, fans have that right to feel that way.
“Fortunately, we’re moving away from that nonsense, and things have cooled off a lot. But, that’s just one of the examples that could have a person like me be like ‘Why do we respect these guys again?’. It’s…” Takato sighed. “…It’s vexing. And then when you have people like Siege fans who go around and support those guys because ‘they’re not afraid to speak their minds’, it could really sour someone’s day just thinking about it.”
“Well, moving on from that, there’s one last question, and it’s a question that was asked of Ata late last year, and I’m asking you now – The PRW Undisputed Championship. Is that in your sights?”
“It’s going to happen eventually,” Takato stated with a slight smile. “But, there’s a time to move around, and right now… I don’t feel it’s the time. With that said, it will happen. Ata and I already have a bet on it.”
“Thank you, Takato.”
“Thank you.”
Chloe smiled before speaking again. “Well, this has been a PRW Dirtsheets podcast. Many thanks to BBC Scotland for allowing us to use on of their studios. Don’t forget to tune in to or stream PRW Clash of The Titans XI this Sunday. This is Chloe Bly signing out.”
Takato smiled. He then lifted up his can of Fortified up to the camera for a bit before chuckling as the shot faded out.
