Ok here is how it goes. I start by asking what a word means(hence the title), and the next person to look at this topic will tell me the definition of the word and after that they will ask what a word means, its basically a cycle of whoever gives a definition gets to ask a member what a word means.

I'll start.

What does Otaku mean? Cause I saw it on a Hellsing Manga book today at Borders while I was buying Computer Tech Books as well. I even bought one for Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop. Anyways, I saw it on the Hellsing Manga at Borders and was wondering what it meant.

Otaku

Otaku is the honorific word of Taku (home).

Otaku is extremely negative in meaning as it is used to refer to someone who stays at home all the time and doesn't have a life (no social life, no love life, etc)

Usually an otaku person has nothing better to do with their life so they pass the time by watching anime, playing videogames, surfing the internet (otaku is also used to refer to a nerd/hacker/programmer).

In the Western culture, people confuse otaku to be something positive like "Guru". If you think about it, it's not really good to be called a guru if it means you are a total loser who can't socialize with other people except through the Internet.

Other Japanese words which have been confused by Westerners also include but not limited to: Anime, Manga, etc
otaku no jinsei ha yabai na! (it sucks to live the life of an otaku!)

The heart can see what the eyes cannot...
A rough translation, Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu = The Style of the Conquering Flying Sword of the Skies. Hi = Fly, Ten = Skies, Heavens, Mi = To conquer, to rule, Surugi = Sword, Ryu = Style. However, Ryu could also possibly mean "flow", as in "flowing like water."

Translate, Owarinai Yume
