(Sorry if there was already a thread for this. I was sure there would be... but I didn't find anything when I looked.) Anyway, yes- simple as the title implied. I think it would be interesting to see some of peoples favorite lyrics posted. Also including why said lyrics are so well regarded would be nice. Circle Takes The Square - In the Nervous Light of Sunday
Right, CTTS. Great band, if you can stand screamo junk. One of my favorite things about their lyrics, is that you have to actually pay attention to them to know what the songs are about. But once you do pay attention to them, you're rewarded with (and this is purely opinion) great writing. |

I like to a lot of different lyrical styles. For example, there's The Decemberists. I love the way that all of their songs, quite literally, tell a story, though it's not always entirely clear what that story is. Their tendency to load their songs with sesquipidalian language and references to old literature also tugs at my heartstrings. I love to listen to "O Valencia!" and envision five different possible stories, all from the same lyrics. I'm also a fan of Tom Waits, but in his case I love his strange and esoteric lyrics. His songs often reference people I've never met and who almost certainly never existed, but who somehow feel like family. His songs often make a point or have a message, but it's so wrapped in the guy's weirdness that it's something you have to gradually unravel. I like Marilyn Manson because he takes what is essentially a bunch of discordant noise and infuses it with a certain style. He gives the noise a sort of swaggering death-march and a chemical somewhere between estrogen and testosterone. He intones anger better than any lyricist I know of, and appeals to my grotesque sensibilities. And then you have Leonard Cohen. I've compared listening to him to having an earthquake sing love songs to you, and I stand by this metaphor. I admire his lyrics for their deep level of meaning to me as an individual and the artistic integrity that seems to facilitate them. |

Kids in America? ![]() ....because I like singing it? Looking out a dirty old window. Down below the cars in the city go rushing by. I sit here alone and I wonder why. Friday night and everyone's moving. I can feel the heat but it's soothing. Heading down, I search for the beat in this dirty town. Down town the young ones are going. Down town the young ones are growing. We're the kids in America. We're the kids in America. Everybody live for the music-go-round. Bright ligths the music get faster. Look boy, don't check on your watch, not another glance. I'm not leaving now, honey not a chance. Hot-shot, give me no problems. Much later baby you'll be saying never mind. You know life is cruel, life is never kind. Kind hearts don't make a new story. Kind hearts don't grab any glory. We're the kids in America. We're the kids in America. Everybody live for the music-go-round. Come closer, honey that's better. Got to get a brand new experience. Feeling right. Oh don't try to stop baby. Hold me tight. Outside a new day is dawning. Outside Suburbia's sprawling everywhere. I don't want to go baby. New York to East California. There's a new wave coming I warn you. We're the kids in America. We're the kids in America. Everybody live for the music-go-round. We're the kids We're the kids We're the kids in America |

What's left inside him? Don't he remember us? Can't he believe me? We seemed like brothers, Talked for hours last month, About what we wanna be, I sit now with his hand in mine, But I know he can't feel... No one knows... What's done is done... It's as if he were dead... I'm close with his mother, And she cries endlessly, Lord how we miss him, At least what's remembered, It's so important to make best friends in life, But it's hard when my friend sits with, such a blank expression... No one knows... What's done is done... It's as if he were dead... He's as hollow as I alone now... He is hollow as I alone! A shell of my friend! Just flesh and bone! There's no soul! He sees no love! I shake my fists at skies above, Mad at God! He's as hollow as I can verse, I wish he'd waken from this curse, Hear my words before it's through, I want to come in after you! My... Best friend... My... Best friend... COME BACK! When I look at the lyrics written out they don't seem like much. But he does a really good job of singing them, and they're really powerful lyrics. (They were written about a friend of the band who was apparently in a car wreck and paralyzed.) @Garaku: I created a monster by bringing that up, didn't I? @Pancake: I dunno. Marilyn Manson, every time I've tried to listen to him has just kind of seemed like he's trying too hard. I mean, the guy has talent, sure. But it seems like his songs would be a lot better if he stopped trying to constantly be Violencesad McBroodbrood every other word. |

The world is a vampire, sent to drain, Secret destroyers, hold you up to the flames, And what do I get for my pain? Betrayed desires, and a piece of the game, Even though I know - I suppose Ill show, All my cool and cold-like old Job, Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage, Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage, Someone will say what is lost can never be saved, Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage, Now I'm naked, nothing but an animal, But can you fake it, for just one more show? And what do you want? I want to change, And what have you got? When you feel the same? Even though I know - I suppose Ill show, All my cool and cold-like old job, Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage, Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage, Someone will say what is lost can never be saved, Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage, Tell me I'm the only one, Tell me there's no other one, Jesus was an only son, yeah, Tell me I'm the chosen one, Jesus was an only son for you... Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage, Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage, Someone will say what is lost can never be saved, Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage, Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a, Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a, Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage, Tell me I'm the only one, Tell me there's no other one, Jesus was an only son for you... And I still believe that I cannot be saved, And I still believe that I cannot be saved, And I still believe that I cannot be saved, And I still believe that I cannot be saved... |

I'd call it "intentionally over the top" rather than "trying too hard", but hey, different strokes for different folks. And I think he's somewhat less Violencesad McBroodbrood since he stopped being the shock rocker around 2000 and started being the artsy goth musician, but that's just me.
FUCK YES. Billy Corgan and his nasally wails are win. I thought about mentioning him, but I was really sure what commentary I could offer about him, as I did with The Decemberists, Waits, Manson, and Cohen, so. |

Ohoh! Powerful One Piece song with translated lyrics! Abandonment of Understanding The world is so very wide, and if there's treasure out there... ...it's only an astronomical possibility But you won't even begin to find it by relying on chance alone And so... Think using your head... Logical reasoning will only get in the way The chances of victory are on the desk Adventuring by fancy alone is the sheer height of folly And so... Even if others were to stop us, Even if they were to laugh at us behind our backs This ship is already sailing forward Bon Voyage! Just leave us alone! I know I'm a fool, but there are things that I just gotta do! Trying to reach an impossible dream is a good ambition, afterall As long as we try, any horizon becomes a little bit closer Work hard to achieve it on your own, rather than simply obtaining it The pleasent sensation of the point of despair Only believing in miracles... that's merely an escape And so... Even if it shocks others, even if they were to strongly advise against it This ship's sails will not be taken down Bon Voyage! Soon we'll see it I understand it quite well, that our good luck cannot return Trying to achieve a firm resolution is a good desire, afterall Even if there are storms which cannot be avoided We'll only continue to go forward Just leave us alone! I know I'm a fool, but there are things that I just gotta do! Trying to reach an impossible dream is a good ambition, afterall I know I'm a fool, but I have to fight on! The further the ocean, the better the paradise must be As long as we try, any horizon becomes a little bit closer. |

Below you will find the lyrics that I have been dorkily obsessed with for the past few days. ---------------------------------------------- One of those fucking awful black days when nothing is pleasing and everything that happens is an excuse for anger An outlet for emotions stockpiled An arsenal An armor These are the days when I hate the world Hate the rich Hate the happy Hate the complacent The tv watchers, beer drinkers, the satisfied ones Because I know I can be all those little hateful things and then I hate myself for realizing that There is no preventative, directive, or safe approach for living We each know our own faith We know from our youth how to be treated and how we'll be received and how we shall end These things don't change You can change your clothes, change your hairstyle, your friends, cities, continents But sooner or later your old self will always catch up Always it waits in the wings (Ideas swirl but don't stick. They appear but then run off like rain on the windshield.) One of those rainy day car rides My head imploded The atmosphere in this car a mirror of my skull Wet, damp, windows dripping and misted with cold Walls of gray Nothing good on the radio Not a thought in my head Be safe I know a place we can go where you'll fall in love so hard that you'll wish you were dead Let's take life and slow it down incredibly slow Frame by frame Like two minutes that take ten years to live out Yeah, let's do that Telephone poles like praying mantis against the sky Metal arms outstretched So much land traveled, so little sense made of it It doesn't mean a thing all this land laying out behind us I'd like to take off into these woods and get good and lost for a while I'm disgusted with petty concerns - parking tickets, breakfast specials Does someone just have to carry this weight? Abstract topography Methane covenant Linear gospel Ashville saleslady Stagian emmisary Torturous lice Mad Elizabeth (Keep a better peoples) The light within me shines like a diamond mine Like an unarmed walrus Like a dead man face down on the highway Like a snake eating it's own tail A steam turbine Frog pond Too-full closet burst open in disarray Soap bubbles in the sun Hospital deathbed Red convertible Shopping list Blow job Death's head Devils dancing Bleached white buildings Memory movements The movie unpeeling, unreeling, about to begin I've seen your hallway You're a dark hallway I hear your stairs creak I can fix my mind on your yes and your no I'll feel your face today in the sparkling canal All red, yellow, blue-green brilliance and silver Dutch reflection Racing thoughts Racing thoughts all too real You're moving so fast now I can't hold your image This image I have of your face by the window Me standing beside you Arm on your shoulder A catalog of images, flashing glimpses Then dawn again Untethered to this post you've sunk in me Every clear afternoon now I'll think of you up in the air Twisting your heel and your knees up around me My face in your hair You scream so well Your smile so loud Still rings in my ears Inhibition Distant tied-up longing Clean my teeth Stay the course Hold the wheel Steer on to freedom Open all the boxes Open all the boxes Open all the boxes Open all the boxes Times Square mid-day Newspaper buildings News headlines going around We watch as they go and hope for some good ones Those tree shadows in the park they're all whistling chasing leaves. Around six pm Shadows across the cobblestones Girl in front of bathroom mirror She's slow and careful Paints her face green, mask-like Like Matisse Portrait with Green Stripe Long shot through apartment window A monologue on top but no girl in shot The light within me shines like a diamond mine Like an unarmed walrus Like a dead man face down on the highway Like a snake eating it's own tail A steam turbine Frog pond Too-full closet burst open in disarray Soap bubbles in the sun Hospital deathbed Red convertible Shopping list Blow job Death's head Devils dancing Bleached white buildings Memory movements The movie unreeling, about to begin That was great Yeah? Mine were alright. Wasn't my best one but who cares? That's the spirit... |

From Bob Dylan's "Only A Pawn In Their Game". There are certain songs which are loved by everyone who is even remotely fond of Dylan (pretty much anything off Highway 61 Revisited or Blood On The Tracks, for example), but if I want to actually give an interesting answer when asked what my favorite song of his is, I'll say either this or the more recent "Things Have Changed". It's one of the most explicitly political songs he ever did on one of his most explicitly political albums (The Times They Are a-Changin') and a lot of people seem to find that style and delivery cloying and irritating (including, after a certain point, Dylan himself), but I guess I'm just a corny motherfucker like that. It's always nice when a song can at once be so tied to the period it was written in and yet remain relevant decades later, though perhaps not exactly as was originally envisioned. |
