Band: Procol Harum Genre: Progressive/Psychedelic/Symphonic Rock Song Recommendations: A Whiter Shade of Pale, Grand Hotel, Conquistador, Good Captain Clack, pretty much any of their songs Notes/comments: I started listening to this band because I read that one of their songs inspired a Douglas Adams book. I am not disappointed. The lyrics are AMAZING. Band: The Darkest of The Hillside Thickets Genre: Punk/Geek/Horror Rock, Powerpop Song Recommendations: Please God No, The Innsmouth Look, A Marine Biologist, 20 Minutes of Oxygen Notes/comments: A large portion of their songs are tongue-in-cheek tributes to the works of HP Lovecraft, but I recommend them whether you've read it or not. Band: 1349 Genre: Black Metal Song Recommendations: Sculptor of Flesh, I Am Abomination, Chasing Dragons Band: Ween Genre: Alternative/experimental Rock Song Recommendations: The Mollusk, Ocean Man, Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down) |

Band/Artist: DJ Fresh Genre: D&B, though he mixes it up a bit every now and then Song Recommendations: Nervous (Probably the best example of what he does best) Throw (Another great song, this time showing something a lot more contemporary) Notes/comments: I'm pretty sure this guy honestly replaces Pendulum as the greatest D&B artist there is. I didn't make note of it before, but he delves a very little bit into Funk with some of his stuff. |

Band/Artist: Pain Genre: Technically, it's "Industrial Metal" but I'm more likely to call it Metal with some techno sounds going on in the background. Song Recommendations: Not Afraid To Die, Pslams Of Extinction |

Band name: Jimi Hendrix (The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Band of Gypsies) Genre: Blues, funk, jazz, rock. Notes/comments: If your looking for a good guitarist look no further. James Marshall Hendrix is the man that makes many moods out of 6 strings. Everything he touches turns into a masterpiece (a few good examples listen to Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode and Bob Dylans All Along the Watchtower then listen to Jimi's. They are both good songs but Jimi took them above and beyond.) I have limited space so just go listen to him. Songs Recomended:Power of Soul, Spanish Castle Magic, Foxy Lady, Wild Thing, Wind Cries Mary, Purple Haze, Fire, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Stepping Stone, I Dont Live Today, Burning of the Midnight Lamp, Castles made of Sand, If 6 was 9, Little Wing, Love or Confusion, Voodoo Child. Band Name: Bob Marley (and the Wailers) Genre: Reggae Notes/comments: Listen to the soothing sound of Bob Marley and let your soul be at peace mon ![]() Song Recommendations: Jammin, Three Little Birds, Dont Worry Be Happy, One Love, I shot the Sheriff Band Name: The Beatles Genre: Rock N Roll!!! Notes/comments: The four headed monster that saved rock and roll and revolutionized music. Pretty much all of there early songs were happy love songs but as the fab four got more into who they really were they grew up along with there music. Song Recommendations: While my Guitar Gently Weeps, Strawberry Fields Forever, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Eight Days a Week, Something, Hey Jude, With a Little Help from my Friends, I've Just Seen a Face, Let it Be, Day Tripper, Cant Buy Me Love. |

Band Name: The Hush Sound Genre: ... Alt Rock? I guess. Notes/comments: Well... You know that sort of Cabaret sound that Panic! had on their first album? That's what a lot of The Hush Sound does. Except better. They have a sort of piano-pop going on, with a trumpet and alternating male/female lead vocals (and both Bob Morris & Greta Salpeter are talented vocalists). As for recommendations... how about the entire album Like Vines? Seriously though, give the songs A Dark Congregation, Lions Roar and Wine Red a listen to get the best idea of what it is I was trying to get at in the notes/comments- because I really didn't do the band justice. |

Artist: MC Frontalot Genre: Rap/Comedy Notes/comments: This is the guy that performed the credits song for the Penny Arcade game, which is linked below if you haven't heard it. He's also a very clever and talented lyricist. Also, he is both nerdier and more street than you've ever even thought about being. Song Recommendations: It Is Pitch Dark Crime Spree (It's a fan video, but all the other videos I looked at had shit audio quality) Final Boss (The aforementioned PA song) Artist: Tom Waits Genre: Jazz/Rock/Folk/Blues/GODDAMN EVERYTHING Notes/comments: This guy may be my favorite individual performer. He's certainly one of the most talented and versatile musicians in the business. Also, he has a voice that sounds like golems fucking. So that's cool. Song Recommendations: God's Away On Business (This video features what appear to be emus, because that's how Tom Waits rolls.) Table Top Joe Kommienezuspadt (Featuring a man on a train, for some reason) Artist: Leonard Cohen Genre: Folk/Rock Notes/comments: This guy is one of my favorite lyricists ever. All of his songs are poetry. Listen to them just for that. Song Recommendations: There Is A War Everybody Knows First We Take Manhattan Band: Placebo Genre: Rock/Alternative Notes/comments: I usually don't like vocalists like the one that this band has, but for some reason I like this one. Maybe it's the imaginative lyrics or just the style of music, but this band just works for me. Song Recommendations: Lady Of The Flowers I Know Taste In Men Band: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Genre: Rock/Alternative/Blues Notes/comments: This is my current favorite band. This will change in two days, but that's not the point. Listen to them to give meaning to your pointless life. Also, they did an entire album wherein all the songs were about murder. If you don't not find this even a little bit awesome, you are not a proper barometer of awesomeness. Song Recommendations: Song of Joy (You know, there a sad songs and angry songs and happy songs, but I think this is the first song to genuinely inspire fear in me. Which is awesome.) Breathless Saint Huck Band: Bright Eyes Genre: Indie/Folk Notes/comments: I don't know what to say about this band. But I like them. A lot. Song Recommendations: True Blue At The Bottom Of Everything Soon You Will Be Leaving Your Man And NOW I'm done. |

Oh god, Pancake, Bright Eyes? That's like the most depressing band ever. They're talented, don't get me wrong, but every song I've heard by them contains about as much fun as a Coldplay album. Band: Maximum the Hormone Genre: Death Metal/Metalcore/Pop Punk (They're kind of all over the place, but enjoyably so.) Song Reccomendations: -Chu Chu Lovely Muni Muni Mura (Pop Punk, with lots of nonsense lyrics. VINYL VINYL VINYL SEX.) -Zetsubou Billy (Metalcore, with some nice melodic bits randomly scattered in it like the seldom-found chunks of chicken in Campbell's soup.) -What's Up People! (Thrashy!) Band: Finntroll Genre: Swedish Folk Metal, focusing on Trolls Song Reccomendations: -Trollhammaren! -Svartberg -Midnattens Widunder |

That's mostly what they do, though there are a few exceptions. I probably like them a lot more because I don't actually find a lot of their "depressing" songs all that depressing. That said, trying to be extremely happy while listening to them is like trying to be extremely angry while listening to John Mayer. It just doesn't happen. Also:
That is so awesome that I wasn't aware it actually existed. |
