Overview
Player: Bookworm
Character Name: Edilon
Current Age: 16
Gender: male
Position Cook/Candidate

Appearance: If Edilon were to stand next to his father M'lym, most people wouldn't guess that they were related. Rather than being tall and broad, he is shorter than average and slender; and his features are considerably more delicate than his father's. He definitely takes after his mother there. However, a closer look reveals the similarities between them. Edilon has the same aquiline nose as his father, and the same dark brown eyes. He also got his father's black hair instead of his mother's blonde. He wears it long, down to his shoulders, in a choppy cut. He has a flair for style and a weakness for visiting the Weyr weaver for new clothes. Edilon always wears a pendant of a bird in flight on a leather cord around his neck, a gift from his mother.

Personality: The boy's a tender-hearted fool, that's what M'lym always says. He's just a sensitive lad, Lonna argues. He is reserved, quiet, and polite, following the rules and rarely getting into a tiff with anyone. He is shy at first meeting, but once he becomes comfortable around a person he can be rather talkative. He is always curious, and has a thirst for knowledge that sometimes borders on nosiness--good thing he's usually too polite to poke around where he isn't wanted. That isn't to say that Edilon is a dull, complacent person, because he can get very passionate about the things he cares about. Anyone who's witnessed one of his fights with M'lym can attest to that. He is a a perfectionist, and can be hard on himself when he thinks he has failed at something. When he sets his mind to something, he becomes completely focused on it.

Edilon is not antisocial, but he enjoys his solitude. He needs some time every day to collect his thoughts and be alone. During that time he usually draws and paints. He has a talent for art and he plans to pursue that more if he doesn't Impress. Not Impressing is something he gets anxious about a lot, and he wonders why he has been left standing for two turns so far.

History

Background: Sixteen turns ago, a woman named Lonna was attending a Turn's End party in the lower caverns of Fort Weyr with her on-again, off-again bronzerider lover M'lym. She was extremely pregnant. In the middle of a dance she started to feel bad pains, and she went to the infirmary. Several hours later a somewhat undersized but healthy baby boy was brought into the world and named Edilon.

Edilon was raised in the Weyr creche, cared for by both his mother and all of the other women of the lower caverns. His father was an active figure in his upbringing as well, since the man would sometimes visit the creche and bring him gifts, but M'lym didn't do any of the nurturing. He also grew up listening to Lonna complain about how M'lym was a workaholic and didn't pay enough attention to her.

He had a good childhood, although he was often teased for his runty size. As a consequence many of his playmates were girls, although looking back that may have been more personal preference than because of being teased. He liked hanging around the kitchen, helping (or sampling) with what the cooks were doing, and when he was old enough to be useful he started working there.

At age 12, he had to decide whether he wanted to stand as a candidate. His mother encouraged him to wait and see if he wanted to join a Craft instead, but his father told him to become a candidate. He had a talent for painting, and could probably go to the Harper Hall as an artist. He decided to wait--and two turns later decided that the call of the Hatching Grounds was too strong to ignore.

It didn't matter anyway, because he was left standing in several Hatchings. He could tell how disappointed his father was in him, and it created tension in their relationship. They also disagreed about whether Thread was coming back. Edilon thought it was, and his father was notoriously against the idea. His general temperament, and later, his sexuality caused a rift between Edilon and his father. It got so that they started arguing every time they were in a room together.

Even with the difficulties, Edilon decided to come with his father to Ista. He wanted to be involved with what was going on and he also hoped to be more successful at a Hatching there.
