Lizzy glanced up from where she was pulling a cooking sheet out of the oven and sighed. That was the fifth one she had to get out. Things were already backed up as it was and it wasn’t looking like they were going to hit a slump any time soon. At this rate she would be luckily if she made it through the night.

Without saying a word, she didn’t have time to think about words, Lizzy nodded to two plates of lasagna for Leila to pick up and turned back to the task at hand pulling the cooking sheet she had been going for from the oven. “Chef.” She heard one of the cooking staff say behind her and turned to see one of her employees holding a pot of blackened and very brunt caramelized sugar. “This caramel glaze is no good. We’ll have to start over from scratch.”

Internally Lizzy groaned. Just another problem added to an already long list of problems for the day. “Toss it. You take over for the marinade. I’ll take care of the glaze.” Pushing away from the counter Lizzy began to make her way through the crowded kitchen towards the pantry, a task made exceedingly more difficult by her large belly. Line cooks pressed out of her way as she passed making the going a little easier but with the state of chaos that was currently going on in the kitchen it was still like fighting her way through a crowd.

“Chef!” The tall blonde heard behind her again. Lizzy turned and glanced at her head saute chef who was holding out a sauce pan to her. “Ze raspberry puree Madame.” Nodding Lizzy took the spoon offered to her by the man and took a small taste which immediately sent her into a fit of coughing. She shook her head and began to wave the man away. “Too bitter.” She said as she regained control of herself. “We can’t serve that. Again…I need you to make it again. Add more sugar.”

Turning from the man she grabbed a pot that she would need and started back into the kitchen. “Chef! Chef!” She heard again and turned to see what new problem she was going to have to solve. It was her fish cook this time and the man began to speak nervously as she watched. “C…chef the h…halibut. It has…uh… gone bad and we…we d…don’t have any more.” As if the day wasn’t bad enough now she had to go apologize to her customers. “I’ll handle it.” Lizzy said and she continued to make her way back to the ovens.

Her head swam with problem after problem. Inventory had to be ordered, customers had to be pleased and above all else she had to get through the night. The baby suddenly kicked so hard that it caused Lizzy to stumble dropping the pot she had been carrying. It clattered to the floor with a sound that instantly broke the commotion in the kitchen. Noticing how quiet it had gotten Lizzy glanced up and saw that everyone was looking at her.

What was wrong with them? Hadn’t they ever seen a pregnant woman before? Why were they all stopping when there was so much that needed to be done? She didn’t have time for this. Infuriated by the questions and her own clumsiness Lizzy began to lose her cool. “We don’t have time to sit around staring at each other all day! Get back to work, all of you!” It was the first time that she had ever yelled at her employees but what else could she do? There was too much to get done and there was no time to waste.

The kitchen went back to work and Lizzy breathed a sigh of relief. Thanking a line cook who retrieved her pot Lizzy made her way through the kitchen and back to the ovens. Placing the pot on the stovetop and setting the heat she was just about to get started making her caramel glaze when she heard that familiar cry from somewhere behind her again. “Chef!” She would not lose her patience again, not in front of her staff. She was the master of the kitchen, the one who the other cooks looked to for direction. She had to keep things under control.

Turning slowly Lizzy saw a young line cook staring at her with an ashen expression on her face. Forcing a smile Lizzy nodded at the girl to let her know it was okay to continue. “Chef, some plates are ready for your finishing touches.”

Nodding again Lizzy sent the girl back to her place on the line and motioned for someone to come over and take her place at the oven. It was one of the roundsmen, the cooks who could work at any station in the kitchen. Surely he would be able to handle this one task. “I need you to caramelize this sugar. Take it to the Saute when you’re done. He will need it to prepare the entrée he is working on.” The roundsman blinked and looked at Lizzy with a confused expression. Lizzy found herself beginning to lose her cool again. “What? You’ll just have to watch the sugar to make sure it doesn’t crystalize.”

The roundsman shook his head nervously. “Chef…There’s no sugar here.” It was Lizzy’s turn to stare, dumbfounded. She turned and looked down at the pot she had brought when she returned from the pantry and sure enough there was no sugar. ’I could have sworn I picked it up. I had to…I didn’t walk all the way to the pantry for nothing…Did I?’ Lizzy thought as she retraced her steps in her mind but no matter how many times she went over it the sugar still wasn’t there.

Shaking her head to clear it Lizzy quickly recovered. “Get some sugar…” She said to the roundsman. “…caramelize it and make the glaze. I’m counting on you okay?” The roundsman, his face flushing with new importance ran off to the kitchen and Lizzy turned to make her way to the line. Three plates were almost ready to be taken out to the customers and they needed just a few finishing touches. All she needed was just a few uninterrupted minutes and she could move on to something else.

Reaching for the first plate Lizzy suddenly stopped short as a wave of dizziness passed over her. Placing a hand on the counter to steady herself she stood for a moment with her head down. The dizziness would pass, it always did she just needed a moment. Taking a few deep breaths she tried again shakily reaching for the plate. This time she almost had it but just as she was about to close her fingers around it her vision at first doubled and then tripled with sickening effect. She caught herself again and desperately tried to fight it off.

Her head swam. She knew that she had been feeling weaker and weaker the past few days but she had marked it up to the many sleepless nights she had been experiencing. Now the words of Wes, Jill and Maria all came back to her telling her that she was working too hard, pushing herself too much. They came all at once drowning out everything else around her and forcing all other thoughts from her mind. She would take a break like they had told her. A little time off until the baby came would do her good. She just needed to finish out the night...

Lizzy tried to push herself back up but her arms were shaky now. It was like her legs had turned to jello and she was supporting her entire weight, baby and all, on her arms. Why did she feel so weak? What was wrong with her? It would just take a minute to get the plates ready and then she could go outside for some fresh air. That would fix her up. She just had to keep going…but she couldn’t. Her arms buckled and suddenly she was falling into darkness, falling…falling…

[/doHTML] |
