Everything looked like it was in order for tonight and with that Lizzy could finally content herself with taking a few minutes off to visit with friends. She knew that inviting Maria and her friend Lucinda over for a visit would make things hectic today and that was why she got here early this morning to start getting the restaurant ready to open. That being said considering how sick she had gotten this morning it was a wonder that she had even been able to get anything done at all but thanks to a little determination and some help Leila she had been able to pull it together and now at least she would have a little time to spend show her guests around.

The tall blonde cook didn’t know why she had been getting so sick lately. It was all seemingly very random, certain foods and smells could set her off and then afterwards she would be just fine. Even things that she used to love she somehow seemed allergic to on some days and then on others she would find herself craving to make something that was completely inedible and yet surprisingly satisfying like a hotdog wrapped inside of a twinky with spray cheese on top. The worst thing was is she knew how crazy it sounded and ate it anyways. She didn’t even usually like junk food for that matter but whatever she was craving she devoured it like there was no tomorrow.

There were other things too, lots of things, enough things to make her worry that something was seriously wrong but they came and went and sometimes didn’t come at all and that made Lizzy think that maybe it was all in her head. She couldn’t talk with anyone about it either. She had tried with Jill and her only response was “Hey it sounds like you’re pregnant” but that wasn’t it. She couldn’t be pregnant, refused to be. There was too much going on right now to be having kids and besides, she had just gotten out of the house with Jill for the first time in her life. She wasn’t looking to start the child raising process all over again just yet.

For now though she had been dealing with things on her own and that seemed to be working most of the time. If things got more serious she would check into it but so long as things continued like they were she thought she would be alright. In any case she wasn’t going to roll over and die any time in the next few minutes and she had company to attend to. “Leila.” She called back to the blonde girl in the kitchen. “I’ll be outside with a friend for a few minutes. If you need me come get me otherwise make sure we have enough silverware ready to handle the early evening rush.”

With that Lizzy turned to head out of the kitchen picking up a serving tray with a tea pot and a few cups on it and brought it out into the dining room. Picking a booth close to the door Lizzy set the tray down on the table and slid in winching a bit at the pain already beginning to form in her lower back and made herself comfortable as she waited for Maria and Lucinda to arrive. No worries for now. Right now she just wanted to enjoy visiting with her friend.

[/doHTML] |

She didn't know how, but Lucinda was able to come, and it just blew Maria's mind. Nothing could have made her Christmas better!
And of course, since the moment Lucinda arrived, the two hugged and cried and talked like they had never been apart to begin with. Maria didn't even want to begin to think about the end of the week when Lucinda would have to return home. But for now, those thoughts wouldn't be necessary. Maria was taking Lucinda to meet the woman who was only her best friend in the world, and Lizzy would get to meet the woman who practically raised her. No big deal or anything.
Besides, Maria figured she would probably be playing translator most of the time since Lucinda could hardly speak any English. But language barrier aside, Maria was looking forward to this little lunch date. She had been all week, and her excitement was easy to see as she led Lucinda through the door to Lizzy's new cafe.
She scanned the room, nearly overlooking Lizzy sitting right under her nose. As soon as she saw her friend, Maria's face broke into a big smile and walked over to greet her. "Lizzy! Hi. Oh, uhm... This is my friend Lucinda. Lucinda, ella es mi mejor amiga que te hablé, Lizzy," Maria said, starting to feel a little silly going back and forth between languages. It was better to stay busy these days because when she was busy her mind didn’t wander quite so far or so frequently. When she was busy she could keep working, just like she always had. She didn’t have to worry about big life altering changes like having a baby and really that made all the difference in the world.

Fortunately she didn’t have to wait too long and soon the blue haired woman was entering her restaurant with Lucinda in tow. Lizzy wasn’t entirely sure what to think of Lucinda. Having never had anything even resembling a nursery maid herself Liz couldn’t really relate to her friend’s life of privilege and practically raising herself she couldn’t understand why one was needed. She could however relate to not having your parents there. She knew that Lucinda had raised Maria and that she meant a lot to her friend and that was more than enough for her. If Maria really was as close to this woman as she said then it was worth it for Lizzy to meet her too.

The blonde smiled at the two women and stood to meet them both. Even though her back screamed at her a slight wince of pain was the only sign she gave that something was wrong. Having long years to practice hiding the pain she felt Lizzy had become fairly good at this. She waited as she was introduced, not understanding the Spanish but catching the meaning easily enough, and then turned her attention to Maria and her guest.

“It’s great to see you again Maria and Lucinda, it’s nice to meet you as well. Maria has told me so much about you.” She said warmly. She was excited by this opportunity and the fact that Lucinda didn’t speak English didn’t bother her at all. Having married a man with a language completely different from her own Lizzy had a deep respect for the culture differences of other countries and was in fact interested in learning more about her as well. “Welcome to my restaurant. I hope you two like tea.”

Motioning for them to take a seat at the table Lizzy began pouring some tea into the cups of the two women. “So what do you guys think?” She said as she nodded towards the nearly spotless dining area. “I’m still trying to get everything just like I like it. So far it has been pretty slow going but it’s getting there.” Lizzy poured a cup of steaming tea for herself and then sat with another small wince. She wasn’t sure what she had pulled in her back but the tea would relax her somewhat. Maybe everything would be better after she had a few moments to rest.

[/doHTML] |

What she did know about Japanese she had largely learned herself, with Wes’ help of course, and even then it had been because she was so fiercely devoted to learning more about the quiet Japanese man she loved. As such she didn’t understand a word of what Lucinda said to her. In most cases this would have probably been pretty intimidating but with Maria there she knew she had nothing to fear. Besides, she was a pretty bright girl and could pick up on some things. Words like ‘magnífico’ just sounded good and she thought the meaning was pretty self-explanatory.

That being the case when Maria did translate what the woman had said Lizzy couldn’t help but have a big smile form on her face. “Thank you.” She said gratefully. “Very much. I had some help but it’s been a lot of hard work to get the place redesigned and opened back up. I’m glad you like it.” Truth was Lizzy was still a little nervous about this whole idea of running her own restaurant. It had been so long since she had done something that she actually wanted to do that the sense of freedom that it gave her was entirely foreign to her. She still second guessed herself at almost every turn but hearing compliments like that was exactly what she needed to put her mind at ease.

“Oh it’s a cacao and mint black tea blend that I’m trying out. I haven’t been feeling that well recently and…well this has helped a little.” Lizzy smiled a little even though the statement wasn’t entirely true. While she had been drinking the new tea blend in hopes that it might calm down her stomach that was only one of the weird things that had been happening to her recently. She was just lying to herself if she thought it was fixing the whole problem. “It’s nothing to worry about though.
