Hunter Schmitz
Winter 14
Noonish

Ah, Winter. While it wasn’t exactly Hunter’s favorite season, Summer surely took that spot with all the girls letting their hair down and donning their bikinis, the snowy season had its perks. For example, the ladies enjoyed sharing cocoa or sitting near a cozy fire, and while he couldn’t say he exactly loved cocoa or snuggling up, he did usually enjoy the partner that he shared those activities with. The best way, after all, to keep a lady happy was to just sit around and do whatever crap it was they wanted to do. It all pays off in the end.

First, however, Hunter had to go find a lady to share a romantic dinner or a relaxing evening “watching a movie” by the fire with. The rest of the year typically found Hunter carrying a picnic basket for two, because let’s face it, Hunter never had trouble finding a woman to share it with, out to the park or the garden where the girls often flocked, but Winter was a bit different. He couldn’t very well sit around in the snow and wait for the ladies to just show up and want to be cold. No, his tactics changed during Winter.

It was a genius plan, he mused, instead of going outside, he’d pick a venue and just casually hang out there on his own until a lovely lady decided she just couldn’t in good conscience let him sit there alone. He’d deployed this sort of tactic before in college, and it had worked decently well, but with so many people with places to go and the busy life of the city, not many had the time to stop and sit a while if they were passing through the coffee shop or stopping to order breakfast to-go. But here? Here in such a slow and quiet town, people seemed to have plenty of time. He’d been successful in the past just perusing the park, what made Winter any different.

And so, with that thought in mind, Hunter strolled through town and down to the waterfall, a place he’d visited often during the warmer seasons with a pretty girl attached to his arm. Walks near the waterfall were a huge hit with girls, the waterfall was apparently “very pretty.” Well, whatever floats their boat. He passed right on by and stepped in through the doors to Flourite Cafe. Here is where he’d do his stakeout. It was fairly quiet now, but he hoped that it would pick up. Until then, maybe there’d be a cute waitress to look at while he waited.

It was a slow day at the Flourite Café and Leila was bored. She never thought she'd see the day when she actually looked forward to having to work, but anything was better than just sitting around, doing nothing. She had several more hours of this, too. Uuuugh, she already wanted to go home and take a nap but she couldn't leave until her shift was over. She guessed the only good thing about it being so dead here today was it meant that Leila had less opportunities to mess something up. No customers to serve meant no reason for Leila to be spilling food or drinks into people's laps or serving them fish when they asked for chicken or... well, there were a zillion ways in which Leila often messed up. She didn't care to list them all in her head.

"I'm going to go see if any of the tables need to be wiped down," Leila called to her boss. That would probably surprise Mrs. Nibai. Leila? Doing work? Voluntarily? What was this madness?! Not madness... just boredom. Or madness caused by boredom. I don't even know anymore, Leila sighed to herself, trudging drearily out into the dining hall. It didn't take long for her to perk right up, however.

There was a customer! And not just any customer! A boy customer! A really, really hunky boy customer! And she was the only waitress around to chat him up and take his order! Leila's day just got awesome! Instantly bright-faced again, the bubbly blonde bun head bounced her way over to his table, sliding into the seat across from him at the table. "Hey there! What's a cutie like you doing sitting here all by yourself? That doesn't seem like any fun," she frowned. "My name's Leila! I'll be your waitress today, so is there anything I can get for you?" she asked brightly, turning her concerned frown into a cheerful smile.

Aaahhh lucky me! I get to talk to this super cute mega-hunk of a guy! she squealed to herself with delight. It had totally been worth it to stick around and deal with all the boredom earlier. Good things really did come to those who waited, she guessed!

Winter 14
Noonish

Hunter slid into a booth just far enough from the door that he wouldn’t be glanced over when a cutie entered the cafe, but not too far that it looked like he was deliberately avoiding anyone’s gaze that came in. He specifically chose a seat that didn’t directly face the door, yet still provided a great view of his sexy mug and still gave him the capability of conveniently turning his head so he could get eye contact with anyone coming in. He’d heard that this place was under new management, and that fact should bring in more people, curious to try out the new food.

He wasn’t wait too long, though, before he caught the sight of a waitress coming from the back in the corner of his eye. He turned his head just slightly to get a better glance as she came bounding over, no doubt glad that her day just got a little less boring and little more good looking. He watched her slide into the seat across from him and he quickly gave her a once-over.

Blonde, bubbly, thin. She certainly wasn’t ugly, though she did look a little on the young side. Hunter, being the sly dog he was, had a fairly decent knack for pegging a girl’s age, and he’d put this girl at no older than 17. Sure, she had those long, quite lovely legs, and true, had she not been wearing that thick apron, her boobs would be all up in his face, but it’s hard to fake it in the face, and he’d seen more than enough done-up faces to deduce what was likely hiding beneath. Still, he’d never seen her around the school. Perhaps she was new, or perhaps he was wrong, that’s happened maybe once or twice in his day.

Once she was settled in and giving him a flirty hello, he concluded his once-over and put on his best sparkling smile. ”I was thinking I’d run into a cute waitress,” he began, waving the idea off like it was silly before letting his smile twist into a sly grin, ”and it looks like it’s my lucky day.” He let the grin linger for just a moment before he broke eye contact and glanced down at the menu. He wasn’t actually hungry, and he needed to pace himself so that he could last a while in case his stakeout went longer than anticipated. ”I think just an early grey tea should be fine for now.” He leaned back in his seat and stretched his arms behind his head. ”And maybe then you can tell me what your favorite dishes are.”

He paused for a moment but then spoke up before letting her leave the booth, ”The name’s Hunter, by the way.” He’d learned early on that you never let a lady out of your sight without giving her your name.

Well this really was a lucky day, wasn’t it? Leila hadn’t been chatting up this cute guy for more than a minute yet and he was already flirting with her in return! Most of the time when Leila decided to go flirt with a cute guy, he just gave her a bemused look accompanied by vaguely polite and slightly confused responses before making up some excuse to leave and exiting the vicinity in a hurry. If she was lucky, he might agree to go on a date or two with her, but they always lost interest fast and just stopped talking to her completely. She couldn’t understand why. Wasn’t she a nice, friendly person? She didn’t think she looked all that ugly, either, so what was wrong with her? Why didn’t boys seem to maintain an interest in her? She just didn’t get it. Mrs. Nibai’s always telling me not to worry about boys so much and just let things happen naturally, but that’s easy for her to say. She’s married and having a baby. Besides, a handsome prince isn’t going to just fall into my lap out of nowhere. I have to put myself out there and take opportunities, don’t I? Of course she did! She read it in Seventeen magazine all the time. Girls who were always single were usually too busy reading sappy books at home and crying about being single to actually go out and get a boyfriend. Well Leila wasn’t going to be one of those girls!

She let out a girlish giggle and pulled back one of her very long pigtails behind her shoulder, letting the other one fall down in a messy coil in her lap. “Well what a coincidence because I was looking for a cute customer to wait on today,” she winked with a bright smile. It was probably a good thing that Leila was so enthusiastic and friendly to her customers because that was where her skill as a waitress ended. Likely the only reason Leila brought home any tips at all was because of her pretty face and attractive figure along with her bright attitude. If she lacked those things, Leila probably wouldn’t still be working at the Flourite Café.

She jumped up at his order for tea, knocking a spoon off the table. Face flushing with embarrassment, she picked it up and tucked it into the pocket of her apron. She laughed it off with a small wave of her hand. “Sorry about that, I’ll bring you out a new one. Tea! Righto! I’ll be right back,” she assured him, zipping off to the kitchen… and getting her long legs tangled up together and nearly tripping on the way there just as he called out his name to her. Hunter. What a hunky name, too. It fit him really well.

Really hoping that he didn’t notice her klutziness, Leila busied herself in the kitchen preparing Hunter’s order. It was just tea, right? How hard could it be to make by herself? She’d leave the cooking to Mrs. Nibai, but why couldn’t Leila handle drinks on her own? Except… Oh shoot, what kind of tea did he want again? she asked herself. It would be mega embarrassing to have to go back out there and ask him to repeat himself. He’d think she was totally stupid! She bit her lip for a moment, wrestling with herself before coming to a hasty decision.

Well, isn’t all tea pretty much the same, anyway? I’ll just bring him whatever kind and maybe he won’t even notice, she decided. She grabbed the first box of tea off the shelf she found (which happened to be English Breakfast), and made it up quickly, making quite the sloshy, wet mess with the water and tea bags.

“Here you go, Hunter!” she gushed, bringing his tea out to him (while almost spilling the boiling water all over the place, of course). “Enjoy your tea!” She slid back into her seat at the table with him. Normally, waitresses shouldn’t do that but it was a really slow day and no one else was here to look after so she didn’t think Mrs. Nibai would mind her getting extra friendly with a customer as long as she wasn’t neglecting any other customers. It might earn her a really nice tip, anyway, and she really needed the extra gold. Even with her job, it was so hard to support her little brother all on her own.

“So what were you saying about my favourite dishes?” she asked him, leaning forward to rest her chin in her palm. “You first. You’re the customer, after all.”

She didn't even realise that she had forgotten to bring out an extra spoon for him like she said she would.
