A stage has been setup as the main competition area and several cooking stations have been arranged for each of the competitors. Ovens have been pulled on stage for each station, every cooking utensil imaginable has been set out for the choosing and there are pots and pans galore. Everything that one might use to create a delicious meal is set out and ready for use and if there is something that you need all that is required is that you go and find it.

It is obvious from the setup that all cooking is to be done on stage in front of the judges and the crowd. In fact aside from stepping off stage to run to the mayor’s pantry the contestants should not be out of sight for more than a few minutes. The pantry itself has been prepared for the contest and stocked with any ingredient, spice or foodstuff that the contestants might need. There is no fear of running out as it is obvious that the mayor has gone to no small expense to provide everything to make this competition successful.

The rules are simple. The competition has been divided into four rounds, arrival, appetizer, entrée and dessert. In each of the cooking rounds a special ‘secret’ ingredient will be provided that the contestants will need to implement into their recipes. Successful blending of the secret ingredient into each dish will be a big factor in the deciding of the champion. Contestants will need originality and a little bit of creativity to walk away winners today.

A strict time limit will also be enforced in order to keep the proceedings fair and balanced. All contestants should arrive by January 17th, appetizer entries should be submitted no later than January 22nd, entrée entries should be in by January 27th and all dessert entries should be in by January 31st. Entries will be judge and winners announced by February 1st. Good luck and happy cooking to all of our contestants. Be sure to cheer on your favorite chefs from the audience.

Now it is time to put on your aprons and grab your frying pans because the contest is about to begin. Contestants as you enter please tell us a little bit about yourself and your cooking background to help us get to know you a little better today.
___________________________________________

Okay folks here we go. We are going to try and move pretty fast on this since it is so late in the month. Please try and get your submissions in on time as we want to have this finished up by the end of the month. This was the day she had been waiting for all summer. The cooking festival was finally here and Lizzy Goodman stood looking out at the crowd with anticipation. For the tall blonde this wasn’t just a competition it was more like a matter of pride. For one, Lizzy loved to cook. Cooking wasn’t just a way of providing a warm meal to Wes and Jill. No, for Lizzy cooking was an art form.

From a very young age cooking responsibilities had fallen to her. If she wanted to eat…if she wanted Jill to eat…then she would be the one who prepared the meal. Sometimes she would have to cook for her father and cook well. If she didn’t…well it was best not to think of that. As a result she had taught herself how to cook, discovered she was good at it and learned that she loved it. Cooking was ingrained upon her very soul and this was part of the reason that doing well was so important to her.

More importantly than that however, was the fact that she wasn’t just doing this for herself. There was another reason why she was up here today and that reason was Wes Nibai. This was more than just a test of her personal ability because today she would be standing by her boyfriend in the place that had brought them together, the kitchen. Of course she loved spending time with Wes anywhere and any way she could get it but it was the time they spent together working in the kitchen that was one of her favorites. It was here that they came together to form a truly perfect team. It was more for him than anything else that Lizzy was here today. She might not have even showed up otherwise.

For all of her years of experience though and despite the fact that she would be standing by a man she had come to trust and love Lizzy still felt nervous and unprepared for the task ahead. The simple fact was that she was out of her element. This wasn’t her. Lizzy Goodman didn’t get up in front of a crowd of people…up in front of judges and have her food critiqued. Oh sure it was nice to think she had skill at home when Jill and Wes could compliment her but this…this was big and Lizzy was feeling out of her depth.

Turning to the Japanese man beside her she gave him a tiny smile. “Do you think you’re ready for this?” She asked hesitantly. Of course it didn’t really matter if they were ready or not because here they were about to go through with it one way or the other. Still, the doubts remained. Could she do it for him? He had been so excited by the possibility of the cooking festival, so sure they would win, but could they really? All she wanted to do was make him happy but could she even do that? Lizzy shook the thoughts from her mind. This was no time for doubts. She had to be strong if not for herself then for Wes.

“I guess we should probably get to our station.” Lizzy said as she led the way over to the cooking area with their names on it. Noticing the number of their station she smiled hopefully. “Look, team number one. That’s good right?” Lizzy wasn’t one to be superstitious but she was looking for anything to take hope from at this point. She knew Wes would reassure her if she started feeling down and that was comforting but she was still nervous about the task ahead.

” Contestants as you enter please tell us a little bit about yourself and your cooking background to help us get to know you a little better today.”

Here it was, the moment of truth. Lizzy looked over at Wes and smiled nervously before looking back at the crowd and somehow, someway, she found the courage to speak. “H…hello…My name is Elizabeth Goodman and I will be competing with my boyfriend, Wes today. I have been cooking for…well ever since I can remember. It is something that I love to do and I think I’ve become pretty good at it. I guess I kind of have a talent at it and it’s kind of one of the things that brought me and Wes together so…I hope you enjoy our meal.” Lizzy gave her best attempt at a smile and whispered to Wes. “How did I do?”

[/doHTML] |

It was like the Summer King all over again. Except he was in his element now, and his wonderful girlfriend was there with him.
And his nervousness was replaced with confidence. Yes, if Lizzy was here with him, then they could win this for sure. They were both great chefs, they had proven it to each other dozens of times over already (even if Wes did think the blonde was better than him).
"I am more than ready for this. Don't worry, we'll be fine. We're monsters over a stove, no one's as good as us" Wes reassured Lizzy when she asked him, giving her a comforting smile to boot. He nodded and followed her along to their station. A chuckle escaped him as he saw their number, one. Team One. "Very good. They know exactly who came to win this" Wes joked. It seemed like crazy luck to get that number, to be that team. They would do great today, he just had to keep telling her that.
” Contestants as you enter please tell us a little bit about yourself and your cooking background to help us get to know you a little better today.”
Wes watched Lizzy giver little opening speech, his heart warming as she mentioned them being together, and cooking being one of the things that they connected over. "You did great" he whispered back to her, and then stepped up to give his own version about himself.
"Hello. I am Wes Nibai, Lizzy Goodman's uh, boyfriend. Don't know what else I can add at this point. Just that we're to win and cook something really good. What Jo had been prepping herself all season for! The cooking festival!!! And man, was she determined to win, but not for just any ole reason. No! She was going to prove herself. She was going to make her parents proud... If only they could be here, but they were watching her from a better place. She just knew it!
Ever since she was little, Jo liked playing house and making mud pies in between fighting off her older brothers and having races with them. She would always serve everyone a big mound of a mud pie with grass toppings decorated so carefully as to make different shapes. Sometimes there would be a butterfly on top of a mud pie. Another time, a dragon. Or maybe a bespectacled hippo. Whatever her little imagination could think up.
It was funny though. Jo couldn't draw a proper stick figure to save her life, and yet, she had such a careful hand and good eye when it came to decorating cupcakes or icing cookies. It was a mystery to her how someone as lacking as she is in the field of art could ever ice a cake to look like a real basket of flowers.
Yes, her family always complimented her cooking, even when made out of mud and play dough. If you gave her a recipe, Jo could easily cook it, then proceed to make it even better by adding a spice here and there, garnishing it with a veggie or two. She had a knack for that kind of thing, but it especially came in handy once her mother started with chemo... She was always at the hospital and was never home to cook, so Jo took it upon herself to cook all of the meals she was home for. Not that anyone minded of course.
Jo was indeed a very very good cook, and soon, all of Obsidian would see that too! There was no way she was going to give up. Even if her competition had the advantage of having two people working together... Just meant that Jo would have to step up her game a bit! Besides... The point was to get out there and have fun! Winning was just an added bonus!
Well, here I go! the short blonde thought as she skipped on stage and over to her station. Station number two! Second the best! she reassured herself, smiling all the while. She was totally going to rock this competition!
She waited patiently as team one took their turns introducing themselves, then stepped forward to give her little spiel about herself. "Hi! I'm Josephine Thibodeaux, and I'm cooking today too! I really like to cook because food tastes yummy and it brings people together and I think it's really fun to make food look pretty! I reeeeally hope that ya'll like what I cook for you, and may the best cook win!" she said with a smile. The audience cheered as Jo stepped back to her station, still smiling. It was just impossible for Wolfgang to feel awkward, and usually it was him to make things awkward in the first place and as for August, well, after years of being in the military it was very hard to make her feel awkward.
Then it came their turn for the introductions.
"Hello! I'm August Lupei and this is my husband and assistant, Wolfgang." August smiled her very best, voice full of confidence and strength, another side effect from the military. "We just moved to the island recently and we already love it here! Cooking started as a hobby of mine and I've been doing it for twenty years. And my husband-"[/b]
"Is a professional test-tester and ingredient-fetcher. Been doing it since I got drafted in the great food war of '97" Wolfgang grinned mischievously and looked like he was going to go into a whole long spiel when August cut him off with a light nudge in the ribs. "Oof... but before the wife can shut me up..." Wolfgang looks to the other contestants. "You all are going down."
"Wolf!" August nudged him again, shaking her head. He was so cute sometimes.
With their introduction out of the way August gravitated towards the station that had the best feeling about it. A superstitious chief? Possibly, or maybe August just knows where she'll have the most luck. Luck was a huge factor on the battlefield after all and despite its fickle hand, it has served her well.
[/align] [/dohtml] |

She knew that he wasn’t much for these social events either and could only imagine what he was going through at this moment. The difference was that Wes never showed that to her. She heard that a secret ingredient was going to be introduced in each round to make things more interesting which she would admit did make her feel a little nervous. It could be kind of like a fruit cocktail sauce. “We’ll need to get some tomatoes, onions, cilantro and a little hot sauce to make the base so I suggest we start with that. She wasn't entirely sure what to make of the ingredient, though. It looked like a green fruit of some kind, similar to the kiwi but not quite the same. They'd called it a fruit, right? How exactly did you make an appetizer out of fruit?

She turned the fruit over in her hands, trying to think of what to do with it. She'd have to decide quickly, and she knew only two recipes that might be considered "appetizers" that used fruit. fruit soup ni shiyokka, fruit salad ni shiyokka... uun, dou sureba ee?

Fruit soup would actually require cooking while fruit salad didn't. True, fruit salad might be more of a dessert thing, but if she put it on a bed of lettuce and used a non-sweet yogurt dressing (as opposed to condensed milk or sherbet), it would be considered a salad!

Her nervousness began to subside as she began to throw herself into her work. Despite being reknown for clumsiness, Mikayo was surprisingly good with a kitchen knife. Slicing fish into sashimi was one of her specialties, so peeling fruit and cutting fruit into even slices was just up her alley! She chose to make her salad from watermelon, apples, grapes (which didn't need to be sliced), cherries (sliced and pitted), pineapple, melon, and the necessary avocado. The lightbulb of inspiration went off again as she was cutting. This reminded her so much of sashimi, why not try to make this into fruit sashimi!? She'd never heard of such a thing before, of course, but serving fruit salad in the same style that sashimi was served would definitely be an unusual (and very Japanese) touch. She'd just have to arrange the fruit slices in an attractive pattern on the lettuce bed and offer yogurt to dip them in on the side. In fact, maybe she should put multiple types of yogurt dip! Plain yogurt, strawberry yogurt, blueberry...they were all at her disposal.

Once the fruit was chopping and arranged, she sprinkled them with lemon juice and then went about preparing the dip. The strawberry and blueberry yogurt were fine by themselves, and it wouldn't hurt to have some plain yogurt by itself. She mixed some plain yogurt with juice from the freshly-sliced fruit, and added a bit of mashed avocado for good measure. And...there! She never knew she could make a dish that looked so good! She hoped she'd get to eat some later...

Mikayo's entry: Fruit "sashimi" (sliced-up raw fruit) with 4 kinds of yogurt for dipping: plain, strawberry, blueberry, and mixed fruit. Round one is about to begin. Remember that this round is strictly for appetizers. The special ingredient that you will be working with in this round is Avocado."
Avocado... There wasn't too much you could really do with an avocado. There was the obvious: guacamole. But, that would be too easy.... Unless she made an amazing home made guacamole. Or maybe she could do a salad! Her mother used to put avocados in her salad sometimes... But what else to put in the salad? That was a tough one.
Still at a loss as to what to make, Jo made a bee-line for the pantry. Maybe looking at some of the ingredients would give her some ideas. She arrived at the pantry in a matter of minutes and swung the door open, looking up and down the shelves for ideas. What would taste good with avocados?
Her eyes wandered through the shelves, when she came across some limes. Limes... That was used in guacamole! Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if she made something that's so common, as long as she did it well and made it memorable. Satisfied with her choice of what she was going to cook, Jo grabbed one of the paper bags sitting at the bottom of the pantry and started filling it up, taking some limes first.
The bag was soon full of ingredients. Avocados, limes, salt, pepper, onions, cilantro, tomatoes, garlic, cayenne, pita bread (as there wouldn't be enough time to let home made bread rise), olive oil, black pepper, garlic salt, basil, and oregano... That should be good. She couldn't think of anything else she might need.
One last glance across the pantry, then back to her station. First thing she did was go and preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Then, while she was waiting for the oven to preheat, she took the pita bread out of its packaging, and started to cut the slices like a pizza. Once she thought she had enough slices, she began to arrange them on a cookie sheet, then started making the seasoning for them. She threw different measurements of olive oil, black pepper, garlic salt, basil, and oregano into a small container and put the lid on. She shook the container until she was sure that the ingredients were all mixed up, then she opened the container, took a seasoning brush, and lightly coated all of the pita bread slices in the seasoning. Only a few more minutes until the oven would be ready.
Better not waste any time. Jo then grabbed the avocados and began to peel and pit them like a pro. Only a moment more before the oven would be ready. She finished peeling and pitting the avocados, then put the pieces of avocado into a bowl. Jo started to go for the tomatoes next, but then a beep came from the oven. Time to put the pita chips in!
Jo quickly grabbed a pot holder and the cookie sheet of pita bread and slid the sheet into the oven. Good! Everything was going smoothly! Now, back to those tomatoes. Jo grabbed the tomatoes, and within a matter of minutes, they were all diced and ready to be added... as soon as the avocados were nice and mashed up of course! But she wanted to get everything all cut up first.
After the tomatoes were diced, she moved on to the onions and diced those, her eyes watering slightly from the smell. Then she chopped up the cilantro, and peeled and minced the garlic. Setting the veggies aside, Jo moved over to the avocados.
Suddenly, she noticed a change in the smell of the air. It smelled good. Like garlic and basil... The pita chips were done! Jo grabbed the pot holder once more and walked over to the oven. She opened the door, the smell wafting up her nose. Yum! Jo took the pita chips out of the oven and set the cookie sheet on the stove top to cool. Okay! Back to the guacamole!
Jo walked back over to the bowl and added a pinch of salt to the bowl. Then, she grabbed the lime, cut it in half, and juiced the two lime halves. She poured the juice into the bowl, then grabbed a spoon and started smashing the avocados. She mashed and stirred until the avocados were nice and creamy, then added in all of the chopped veggies. This was going to be so yummy!
She stirred the veggies in, thinking of how yummy it would be and how much all of the people who tried it would like it. Yes! Guacamole may have been a simple appetizer, but plenty of people sure seemed to like it! Jo glanced around her station, and spotted one last ingredient sitting on the counter. The cayenne! Of course, she couldn't forget her secret ingredient! It just wouldn't be the same if the guacamole didn't have a little kick!
Jo quickly grabbed the cayenne pepper, and added it into the mix. Once satisfied with the dip, she started opening and closing cabinets until she found the serving dishes. She grabbed a plate and a bowl and brought them over by the guacamole and pita chips. She scooped the guacamole into the bowl and arranged the pita chips around the bowl, having fun making the dish look pretty.
Happy with her creation, Jo smiled and set the dish aside. She looked around the kitchen and frowned a little. The counter where she was cooking was a mess. Well, better do a quick clean up! Jo placed the dirty dishes in the sink and let them soak in water for a moment while she wiped down the counter. Then she moved back over to the sink and washed the dishes, dried them, and put them back where she found them just in case she would need to use them later.
Finding herself with nothing left to do since she was all done, Jo went and stood by her dish, waiting for instructions from the emcee for what to do next.
Jo's entry: Home-made guacamole (with a little bit of cayenne pepper for spice) and home-made garlic and basil pita chips.

tag: Open!
date and time: Summer 17; 5:30 ish
wearing: This!
credit: made by kena.
round: appetizer

[/dohtml] |

[dohtml] [align=center]
Summer 17 YR 10
5:30 PM
Tag: Open!
Round: Appetizer!
Wolfgang and August Lupei
![]()
Avocado! August was a huge avocado lover! She couldn't have asked for a better start to a cooking contest! Wolf smiled knowingly at her as he stood to the side of the station, waiting for his orders. August nodded back to him as she mentally glanced over every recipe she knew. There was a good shrimp recipe but then a wonderful bruschetta recipe came to mind. The memory of the pepper, corn, onions and avocado taste on the tip of her tongue had her mind made up.
"Alright, hubby!" August said. "This is going to take team work! You go for the cheddar jack cheese, shredded if possible, and egg, some pastry dough, corn, black beans, red onions and red peppers!"
Wolf nodded and set out into battle, August right behind him with her own list. Cilantro leaves, jalapeno pepper, ground cumin, lime juice, butter, sour cream and of course, avocado. Yes, there were a lot of ingredients but each worked well together and one didn't overpower the other. First came the tangy spices, followed by the sweet corn and lastly the avocado which dances across the taste buds and tangos with the other flavors.
With their arms laden with ingredients they returned to their station, August putting on a white apron as Wolf sorted everything out. He knew the recipe almost as well as she did and started work on the things he knew. He diced the onion and peppers and mixed them together in a bowl along with the corn, beans, cumin and a teaspoon of lime juice. While he worked on that August took the pastry dough and cut it so that she had long strips of dough. Then, she beat the egg into a bowl, and added a little water to create a mixture to brush over the pastry.
Next August chopped up the cilantro leaves and took the shredded cheddar and sprinkled them over her pastries and rolled everything up like pinwheels. As they baked in the oven for fifteen minutes, August got to work on the avocado part of her recipe. The avocado was set in a bowl and she got to work mashing it up into a green paste which she mixed in some sour cream and a little of the remaining lime juice.
Some time later the pastries cam out and August added some of her avocado mix to each, creating a base for the onion, pepper and corn mix to rest upon. The bright yellow, red, black and some green (thanks to some of the extra cilantro) colors of the ingredients looked quite appealing atop the light green of the avocado and the creamy tan of the pastry.
Lupei's entry: Avocado Bruschetta Bites
[/align] [/dohtml] |

Once she had set the water to boil the blonde immediately went next to get the shrimp so that they could start cooking. All of this was accomplished by the time Wes returned from the kitchen. She knew that they would need to move fast to get everything done within the time limit so there was no time to waste. Luckily she had in mind what she wanted to do.

Dumping the shrimp into the pot she turned just in time to see Wes returning with all the ingredients. She flashed him a smile and watched as he placed everything on their table. “Thanks. We’ll need to make the cocktail sauce while the shrimp boil so we’ll need a food processor to get everything mixed together but first...” Lizzy grabbed one of the large cutting knives from a block and brandished it with delicate ease. “…we’ve got to prepare everything to be blended together.”

With movements that could only come from years of practice and experience Lizzy began peeling onions and cutting up the cilantro, tomatoes and avocado. Sure it would all be going in the processor but she needed to make room first not to mention the fact that the skin of the onions were no good for eating. One by one she placed the ingredients into the food processor on the counter and then set the blades to spinning. It didn’t take long for the processor blades to devour everything leaving the beginnings of the cocktail dip. “Now we just need some hot pepper sauce to give it that extra kick and we should be good to go.” With that Lizzy added a few dashes of the spicy liquid and set the processor on for another quick spin.

They couldn’t stop there however. The shrimp still needed to be drained and the plates for the judges still needed to be prepared which could take some time. Lizzy grabbed a strainer and placed it in the sink and then picked up the boiling pot with two holders and proceeded to drain away the water by filling the strainer with its contents.

“Okay I think we’re ready to get the food plated. Now let’s see…” Lizzy said as she began to look around and tap the counter frantically as her mind worked. “Oh!” As if stuck by a sudden revelation the blonde rushed over and grabbed a few serving dishes for the judges and began filling the center with her fruit cocktail sauce. “The avocado will counteract the spiciness of the dish but it will still have just enough of a kick to let you know something is there.”

Lizzy continued her preparations by pouring out some salt and lining the rims margarita style. She then began placing the shrimp around the edges so that the tails were out for easy access. As a finishing touch she picked up some of the left over cilantro and sprinkled over the top of each bowl to freshen the dish up and give it a little color. They would be graded on the amount of effort they put into their submissions after all and Lizzy wanted to make sure that they didn’t miss any points.

With the dish finished she slid the freshly plated food to the front of their table where it could be seen and judged. Lizzy then turned back to Wes and actually found she was feeling much happier and confident than she ever thought she would. She was actually starting to enjoy this. “Well I guess that’s it. What do you think? I mean it’s pretty good for such short notice right?” The blonde said with a smile. “I wonder what the next ingredient will be.”

Wes and Lizzy's submission: Margarita Shrimp with fruit cocktail sauce. The tomatoes, onions, cilantro and hot sauce makes a traditional cocktail but the added avocado takes a little bit of the bite off and adds a fruity taste giving the dish a little bit of a tropical flavor.

[/doHTML] |

The secret ingredient for the entrée round is trout.

Trout are a fresh water fish found naturally throughout North America, northern Asia and Europe.trout are somewhat bony, but the flesh is generally considered to be tasty. The flavor of the flesh is heavily influenced by the diet of the fish. For example, trout that have been feeding on crustaceans tend to be more flavorful than those feeding primarily on insect life. Additionally, they provide a good fight when caught with a hook and line, and are sought after recreationally. Because of their popularity, trout are often raised on fish farms and planted into heavily fished waters, in an effort to mask the effects of overfishing.

Be aware that all appetizer submissions must be turned in by January 27th.

[/doHTML] |
