Dark Night

A frown tugged down Dark Night's lips as he glanced down at his clothing. It was not really anything within his normal range of clothing to wear, yet here he was. He doubted anyone would recognize him anyway, he wasn't around people all that much in his line of work, but animals. And he preferred it that way. Today, much at Green Macaw's prodding, he was wearing dress slacks, a dark blue -almost black- dress shirt underneath a black suit coat. His black mask covered a good portion of his face, from about an inch above his brow line to just below his nose. And, because Green Macaw had picked it out, on the right upper corner it had some little line-think of silver sparkle-ly stuff.

He wouldn't normally be caught dead in this kind of a costume, but he had given his word to Green Macaw's brother that he would watch over the teenager at this thing. And of course, she'd gone all-out in getting together his costume. She'd even wanted him to have a cape – but he put his foot down on that one. Normally he wore a hat, but tonight his dark hair could be readily seen. He actually felt funny and out-of-place without a hat. … Ah well, all the less likely that someone would be able to recognize him. Also, he had chosen the name Dark Night, because, in his opinion, it was going to be a dark night. He was thinking of gloom and doom, yes.

Stalking into the Mayor's Estate, Dark Night avoided meeting anyone's gaze and continued right on into the room with the dancing, where he figured Green Macaw to be. He saw her wandering around the edges of the room, and giving a slight nod, hesitated only slightly before turning off to the side and backing up a few steps. Crossing his arms over his chest and frowning at anyone and anything within sight, he leaned against the wall and hoped his costume blended him in with the background enough that he would not be noticed and so not have to converse with anyone. Now his only wish was for time to fly and the night to be over so he could get back home.

She was right, it could have been anybody. But why him? Why did he have to be like that? It was just the excitement, that was all. She understood, thank goodness. To ruin the night of someone else would be terrible. But there seemed to be no hard feelings, she didn't seem that about it herself. Well, he hoped she wasn't. he couldn't quite tell with the mask in the way.

Queen of Diamonds, huh? Oh, maybe just Diamonds. Well, she certainly dressed the part, but didn't seem confident enough to show it. It was a masquerade, Diamonds could be whatever she wanted! Like a firetruck or something! If a couple came dressed up as firetruck, or one of those dragons in Chinese New Years parades, epic win!

"Alright then, Diamonds. I'm Brother-Hood, but I guess you can just call me Brother. Or Hood. Or whatever floats your boat, really. Feel free to get creative" Brother-Hood offered her with a smile. Really, he could care less, so long as it wasn't anything bad.

Oh hey, weren't they doing something? Right, food! Brother-Hood grabbed his own plate, but didn't step up put any food on it. "Ladies first" he said, motioning to the food. "You were here first anyway"

Well now this was an interesting turn of events. The guy goes from almost running her over to practically being a perfect gentleman. Apparently her words had a positive effect after all which allowed her to relax a little. He couldn't be that mad at her if he had offered to let her go first so maybe this guy wasn't as bad as she had first thought. At the very least she should give him a second chance.

"Thanks." Diamond said with a smile as she took a plate for herself and began to go down the line. She picked through an assortment of fruits and cheeses selecting a few things that interested her. She wasn't that hungry but a little snack wouldn't do her any harm. Besides she didn't want to hold up the line or anything.

Glancing over at him as she went Diamonds spoke up again not wanting the conversation to get cold. "So Brother Hood, what brings you out to the Masquerade tonight? Do you come to these things often or do you feel just as out of place as I do?" She let out a chuckle to show her joking nature but the truth was this was about as far from ordinary as it could get for her. It was a long shot but it would be nice to find a way to make this night a little more interesting than sitting by herself in a corner while Forest had the time of her life.

The Black Swan nodded and went to walk with the pink clad woman but was stopped when a man in a tuxedo approached them and put a hand on the pink woman's shoulder. He seemed as annoyed by the drag queen as she was. Looking at the man, Black Swan gave him a small smile. "Uh, don't worry, I took care of it." she added, brushing her hair from her face.

"Would you two like to join me for a drink?" she piped up and began to slowly walk towards where the drinks were. She really didn't feel like dealing with this guy and making an even bigger commotion, so just walking away was without a doubt the best decision.

Pink Diamond

-----------------------------------

Pink Diamond bit her lip, still determinedly staring at the floor and trying to hide what little of her face that wasn't concealed by her mask with her hair. A few humiliated tears had escaped her eyelids, but she was by no means sobbing so she figured she was safe as long as her hair and her mask could keep hiding her face like this. She didn't really want to go get a drink anymore or dance. She didn't really want to do anything anymore except go home, take off this ridiculous outfit and go to bed. Formal parties like this weren't much fun when you felt stupid and ridiculous, and Pink Diamond felt like she was exactly that tonight.

She almost expressed this to Tuxedo Mask and the other woman, but immediatly felt guilty. If she insisted on going home, Tuxedo Mask likely wouldn't want to stay, either, because he'd be worried that she was upset. She'd been the one to drag him out to this event in the first place. She'd also look rude to this nice woman who had just done a very brave thing by sticking up for her. She'd make their night worse than she'd already managed to make it. Just stick it out for their sakes, at least. You're the one who was so excited to come here tonight in the first place, Pink Diamond reminded herself.

She swallowed hard and nodded. "That would be nice, thanks," she mumbled in a very small voice. Pink Diamond started to follow the woman towards the drink table, still self-consciously playing with her dress and her hair as if she felt uncomfortable in her own skin all of a sudden. She really did feel uncomfortable and humiliated. People were supposed to look nice at these things and she obviously just looked stupid. "Are you coming?" she asked Tuxedo Mask. She wasn't going to leave her friend with this guy.

Smiling, Brother-Hood followed behind Diamonds, filling his own plate with an assortment of delicacies. Ho boy, there sure was a lot to choose from! He decided to try whatever looked appetizing. Well, it all did, but he only had so little room on his plate! Oh yeah, he'd totally would have to go running later. Eating and then not doing anything about it was totally not okay in his book.

"To tell the truth, back where I used to live before here, I used to work at parties like this. So I thought I'd change it up a bit. It's much more fun to be a quest than an employee" Brother-Hood explained to Diamonds. "And how can you feel out of place? You look like a million bucks!" he added, trying to convince her.

Why feel out of place? Nobody would know it would be her, whoever she was. But she could just be one of those girls who was really insecure and stuff. Or maybe she didn't come to big parties like this very often. The least he could do was cheer her up and make her comfortable. As comfortable as a total stranger can get.....okay that sounded creepy.

Diamonds smiled at the man even though his comments had caused a slightly blush to rise on her cheeks. She wasn’t used to getting compliments like that especially from strangers like Brother Hood. Lucky that was all hidden by the white mask she was wearing or otherwise she would have been horribly embarrassed. “T…thank you. I guess the reason I feel kind of out of place is because I don’t really come to these events much. In fact, this is the first time I ever think I’ve been to the mayor’s estate.”

Spearing a cube of cheese Diamonds delicately popped it into her mouth. The party had good food she had to give the mayor that but the rest of it, the dancing and large crowds, she just couldn’t get into. “I guess these kind of big social events just aren’t my thing. Really I’m only here because of her…” The blonde woman said as she nodded towards the dance floor to a girl dressed all in green. “…my little sister. Not really much of a dancer but at least she’s happy right? She practically begged me to bringing her so what choice did I have?”

Diamonds looked down at the dress she was wearing. She guessed it really was nice. Probably the nicest one she had ever owned. At least she had gotten the chance to look the part tonight. “I have her to thank for putting this outfit together. She’s the one that’s got the eye for this stuff. I suppose that makes me the boring sister in most people’s eyes but to each their own I suppose.”

Turning her attention back to the Brother Hood she smiled. “But I’m probably boring you with the story of my life. You say you used to work at parties like these where you used to live? Are you new to the island or something? This masquerade has become sort of a yearly thing here so you couldn’t have been here too long and missed it.”

How sweet of Diamonds, coming with her little sister. Sounded like she didn't have much of a choice, but heck, if Brother-Hood had a little brother or sister, he'd totally take them out to a party like this. And Little Sister had an eye for fashion. Well, she certainly picked out a beautiful outfit for Diamonds. People here were so nice! Unless it was just these two. No, everyone else he had met so far had been nice too, so there was nothing to worry about. Not like he got out enough for it to really matter. What was this about being boring? Cause because these types of parties weren't her thing didn't mean she was boring. Where did this girl get her information from?

"Yeah, I moved here in Spring. Seems like there's always some party or something of the likes here. It's a nice place to live, a drastic change from the city, but I like how quiet it can be. Plus, that hurricane we had was the coolest thing I've ever experienced!" Brother-Hood babbled on. Yeah, not everyone liked the hurricane because of all the damage. But not everyone gets a chance to see something like that happen. He was more used to the occasional earthquake, major heatwaves, and that one winter, the huge snowstorm. Hurricanes were simply unheard of (mostly because the ocean was separated by a state).

"But really, they have this Masquerade every year? Must be pretty popular then. Guess I know where I'll be next year"
