The Basics
Name: Mary O’Shea
Name Meaning:
Mary: Star of the sea
O’Shea: Descendant of Seghdha
Seghdha: Dauntless, Steadfast
Gender: Female
Blood Type: O-
Age: 25 (As of year 12)
Birthday: Summer 14
Birthplace: Killarney, Ireland
Nationality: Irish
Residency: Blubird Gateway #072
Face Claim: Liz Phair

Appearance

Hair: Mary's hair is golden blond deepening to a very light brown if she spends a lot of time in the sun. It is a color that most people back home would associate with Newcastle gold. She normally keeps it cut around shoulder length but has been known to let it grow longer on rare occasions. It is silky and soft to the touch showing that she takes care of it. Despite this however it’s obvious that she doesn’t really think anything of her hair because she doesn’t do anything with it preferring to let it hang down naturally. Her thinking is that she won’t be able to enjoy it anyways so there isn’t really any point in fixing it up.

Eyes: One of Mary's most notable features are her eyes. They are large and a very bright shade of blue that is not seen in many people. Most people who stare into them would describe them as striking and hauntingly beautiful because they grab your attention and often times refuse to let it go. They are usually bright, clear and reflective making them seem deep and easy to get lost in but are almost completely devoid of emotion. However this should not be looked at as a true indicator of her mood because of the simple fact that she is completely blind. Still not many get the opportunity to see her strangely beautiful eyes as she will often try to hide them behind large, dark sunglasses. Every once in a while though she can be caught without her glasses and those large, unseeing eyes will capture the attention of many before she realizes what is going on and covers them again.

Face: Her face is long and slim. Her features are more on the smaller side but fit her very well. They give her a youthful appearance and people often mistake her for being younger than she actually is. While not really a bad thing but she doesn’t really put much stock in comments about her appearance because she doesn’t really know how she looks. She doesn’t wear makeup for the same reason giving her a natural look of youthfulness instead of one that is fixed up with cosmetics.

Body: Mary stands at a fairly average height of 5’6”. She is a bit on the slim side with wider hips and a normal bust size giving her a curvy hourglass shape. She has the traditional Irish pale complexion but her skin is in good condition with only a few scars from minor injuries she has received over her lifetime. She is not very fashionable for obvious reasons and might come up with some very interesting outfits but other than that she can fit into just about any crowd.

Scent:: She likes floral scents the best.
Picture:

Emotional

Personality: Mary is a bit of a tough cookie to crack. She can be friendly and pleasant enough if she likes you but getting her to like you can be difficult sometimes. She is almost completely blind which has brought her a life time of embarrassment and ridicule. This has made her guarded and mistrustful of new people. She can be very judgmental and if someone doesn’t get on her good side she can hold it against them for a long time. The opposite is true as well as she can be very forgiving and accepting if she views someone favorably.

Of course the same thing that has made her so bitter is also responsible for a few of her positive traits. Because she has always been blind she is very independent and determined to do things for herself. She is very self-reliant and perhaps a little strong willed at times. She doesn’t like to accept help from others and she doesn’t give up on things very easily. Defeat is something that she is not accustomed to accepting and as such will consider anyone telling her that she can’t do something as a challenge and work all the harder to accomplish what she wants.

She loves music and can often be seen singing or playing her violin by herself. She would like to become a singer but as of yet her handicap has kept her from attaining this dream. Still she has hope that her talent will be discovered one day. Nothing makes her happier than when she is singing.

Other than that she is generally kind and good hearted. Once you get past her tough exterior you will discover that she is quite caring. She would love to meet someone special but struggles with insecurities about herself. Besides, for a blind girl in a foreign country it can be very tough to find that kind of connection. She tries not to let it bother her but it can be quite lonely living in a world of darkness with only the noises around you to keep you company.

Likes:
Singing
Playing the violin
Animals, especially her dog
Warm weather
Being outside
Fruit - Especially strawberries

Dislikes:
Chaotic, noisy environments
Loud people
Winter
Rain
Being pitied for her disability
Being told she can’t do something

Strengths:
Very musically talented – She has an excellent soprano singing voice and is very good on the violin and piano
Self reliant & Determined
Good-hearted
Excellent sense of hearing – It is one of the main senses she relies upon

Weaknesses:
Blind – She has very limited light perception. She can determine the direction of a light source and has a slight perception of its intensity but other than that nothing. She is completely blind at night
Has trouble trusting others
Has trouble letting things go
Judgmental

Goals:
To live a normal life in spite of her handicap
To start a successful music career
To find someone special who can see past her handicap

Fears:
Being left alone in a place she doesn’t know
Bugs – Too many legs and always it feels like they are crawling all over you
Having no friends, no family, no one to care about her, in other words being completely alone in her world of darkness

It’s All Ancient History

Childhood: Even from a young age Mary’s life was a tale of tragedy. She was the only child born to poor Irish farming family on the outskirts of Killarney. Her mother died during child birth and her father was left to take care of Mary by himself. Her father did the best he could but soon discovered that Mary had in fact been born blind which only added to his worries. He wasn’t a rich man so having to raise a child on his own was hard enough without now having to worry about Mary’s disability. Still, he did the best to provide for her and succeeded in providing for their needs.

Adolescence: Problems continued on into Mary’s adolescence as her father became increasingly depressed and turned to alcohol to solve his problems. He became violent and abuse when on the drink and Mary, more often than not, found herself as the focus of his rage. She was not much use around the family farm and usually ended up hurting herself whenever she did try to help with many chores. Her father began to blame a lot of his past troubles on his daughter’s blindness and this didn’t make for a happy home life all the time.

School wasn’t much better. Mary’s disability was a constant source of ridicule from her schoolmates. She was always clumsy and awkward and always had a hard time fitting in. However, if it had not been for her time at school she would have never discovered her musical talent.

She had always had a good voice but it wasn’t until she first picked up her violin that she really began to get noticed for her talent. Luckily she found a mentor and friend in her music teacher Mr. Keane who saw her raw talent and took a special interest in her training. She discovered that she really enjoyed music and it was that love for music and her relationship with Mr. Keane that got her through her school years.

Adulthood: As she got older Mary became increasingly restless with her home situation. Things hadn’t really improved with her father and she wanted to leave the nest and get out on her own. It was a scary thought since she had never been completely alone and had to take care of herself. It was actually Mr. Keane who she had kept in touch with over the years that had urged her to pursue a musical career.

There was the problem of money though. Her father certainly couldn’t pay her way and finding work was difficult for a young blind girl so it was again her old teacher and mentor that stepped up and provided her with the means to achieve her goal. She left her home seeking a place to learn and perhaps even exert a little independence. She needed a quiet, peaceful place where she could expand her horizons so she landed at Obsidian and Thomson University hoping that maybe this time she had found her place.

What Travels With Me
Money: 10000
Personal:
Clothes - Several spare changes of clothes
Keegan - A large German Shepard Seeing-Eye dog. She has had Keegan for a few years now and he has served her well. He is well trained and very obedient to Mary. In fact, he hardly ever leaves her side most of the time and will even be quite defensive if he feels she is threatened.

The Missing Links

Friendship: :white - :purple Normal: Befriending Mary can range anywhere from easy to depressingly hard. While she is generally friendly she can be cold and distant around people she has never met before. She is wary of new people especially if she thinks they are looking down her for her handicap. She forms opinions of others very quickly and doesn’t let things go easily so how quickly someone is able to become her friend will be decided on the first meeting. If you are friendly, kind, or have a good sense of humor you can generally get on her good side pretty easily. However, if you are loud and obnoxious, mean, or rude she is almost assured to have a bad opinion of you.
Romance: :white Moderately Difficult: If Mary is suspicious of new people she meets she is especially wary of people she develops feelings for. She can’t judge people on physical appearance but rather has to depend on their personality and her ability to read and understand them which is considerably more difficult. She can be a little insecure about herself when it comes to romance mainly because she doesn’t think that anyone could ever love a blind girl. Still, if a man were to have a certain amount of patience with her and her disability and showed himself to have a good heart he probably wouldn’t find it too hard to win her. She can sense romantic intentions pretty well and if you are able to befriend her and want to take it further you have a much better shot than just coming up to her and trying to hit on her out of the blue.
Opinion: You're my life line out here. Without you by my side I would be lost in a world of darkness...all alone. I'm glad I got you and I'm glad you have been so loyal to me. Out here you're the closest thing to family I have so I guess we have to depend on each other. In the end though, that's really not that bad.
Opinion: My old teacher and mentor. He has done so much for me over the years and now with him helping m with my education...I don't really know what to say. I don't know what you saw in me that made you think I was special but thank you for everything. I hope that one day I'll make you proud.
Opinion: You’ve been supportive of me since I arrive on the island with nothing. You helped me when I didn’t think I needed help, you stuck by me when I didn’t think I needed friends and you tore down the walls of stubbornness and pride that I had erected to protect myself. I haven’t had many friends in my life but you are one of the best.
Romance: :orange
Opinion: I certainly never expect to feel like I do about you. You have been much better than I ever thought I deserved and shown me that just because I’m blind it doesn’t mean I have to wander in this darkness alone. The trip to Hawaii…I can’t even begin to describe it. You really are amazing and I’m glad you found me.
