As the first note of the song rung out, settling over the crowd of people watching the two men perform, including Lian and the children, Lian frowned slightly, worrying that the music might wake up Hiba. She had been extremely fussy today and it had taken Lian quite a while to lull the little girl to sleep in the first place. If she woke up and started wailing, Lian would have to take her, Jalila and Habib home so as not to be inconsiderate to the other people trying to enjoy the music and she knew they’d be disappointed at not being able to stay for very long. The baby stirred slightly and Lian gently rocked her making soft “Shhh” noises into her ear as one hand soothingly rubbed the baby’s back. It seemed to work. Hiba stopped squirming and her breathing remained slow and even in her sleep.

Lifting her head to watch Jacobs Timmy and… Aiden, (she realized Jacobs Timmy hadn’t given her his family name) Lian thought perhaps the song itself was helping keep the baby asleep. She didn’t know very much about the technical aspect of music, but the song was very soft and low-key. It had a soothing feel to it and Lian lifted an eyebrow in mild surprise. Jacobs Timmy hadn’t been lying when he told her tonight’s performance would be nothing like what had been done at Andesite. She remembered thinking the songs with Jacobs Timmy as the lead singer that night had been much more pleasant to listen to than this Aiden man’s senseless screaming, but it had still been rather harsh and loud. It had only been soft in comparison to what had preceded it, but this was… lovely, she had to admit. She still had to strain to make out the foreign English words, but she noticed that she could now comprehend a good portion of the song, which was more than she could say last season when she’d been lucky to catch the odd word here and there at Andesite. Maybe it was because the song was softer and slower, or maybe it was because her English was slowly improving from having to speak it on a daily basis here. More than likely, it was a combination of both these factors.

“Give it all to you, reaching as I fall… it’s already over, already over now,” she heard Aiden sing with incredible feeling into the microphone as Jacobs Timmy watched him with an expression Lian couldn’t place, but sent chills through her body. Although she was still aware of the three children she needed to watch and look after, Lian found herself almost entranced by the words that were being sung and the intensity in which they were being uttered, feeling her chest tighten. It brought back so many memories that she wanted to forget and cling to at the same time. So many memories of Xhu attacked her. Good and bad all swirling and jumbled together in a chaotic mess. His smile and the way he could never lie to her without grinning like a school boy, the way he had looked at her with adoration in his eyes on their wedding day, the time he had argued and pleaded with her father all night on her behalf, begging him to let him marry her and make her a virtuous woman. The night he had come home and looked at her with guilt and failure etched into every crevice of his face as he told her he lost his job and her arms around his neck, assuring him it would be alright. The days of silence as he drank himself deeper and deeper into a stupor until he took his fists to her. The night she ran away in fear…

Lian found herself biting down very hard on her bottom lip to keep the pain from becoming visible on her face, though she wasn’t sure how good of a job she was doing. She managed to keep the tears behind her eyelids but she could feel the corners of her mouth quivering just slightly, no matter how hard she tried to keep every part of her face smooth and completely unreadable. The shame of showing emotion in public was something Lian certainly didn’t need after all the trouble she’d caused in this town since arriving here. Do not forget yourself, Lian! the sensible part of her scolded sternly, but the part of her that loved her husband and her family wept for them both and clawed at her.

As Aiden’s haunting voice slowly fell away and the music came to a soft close, Lian looked down to make sure both Habib and Jalila were where they should be. They were. Both of them standing right next to her. Thank Quan Yin. As if she needed to lose track of another child tonight. Habib looked up at her with concern in his eyes. ”Are you okay, Lian? You look sad,” he told her softly. What else could Lian do but lie? She couldn’t explain this kind of pain to a little boy, nor did she want to burden a child with the same burdens she carried. Forcing a smile, Lian shook her head slightly.

”I very well. It alright,” she reassured him quietly. ”That much pretty song, hm?” she asked as the children nodded. She spotted Jacobs Timmy and that Aiden fellow packing up and getting off the stage. She should probably compliment them on their performance. It was beautiful. It had been powerful enough to touch her, after all. ”Come,” she told the children, gently leading them back towards the two men, hoping they wouldn’t be exposed to any more vulgarity. In any case, she just wanted to give them a quick compliment.

Finally catching up to the two men, having been slowed down considerably by her pregnant state and towing three small children along with her, Lian gave a tiny bow, being careful not to disturb the sleeping baby in her arms, keeping her gaze directed at the floor. ”I hope it not too bold for me speak such, but… that was much beautiful performance,” she said softly to the two of them, wishing she wasn’t so limited in her use of the English language so she could adequately express just how lovely it had been. Giving the children a gentle nudge in their shoulders, they got the hint.

”It was really good, Mr. Jacobs and… um, Mr. Jacobs’ friend…” Jalila said sheepishly with a small grin as Habib nodded in agreement, always the quietest of the Bousa’id children.

”Virgil Drach, classical musician from Germany. Pleasure to meet you Will.”

“Likewise.” Will replies with a grin as Virgil shakes his hand. A nice firm handshake at that. Something that you really wouldn’t expect from one who relies on his hands for delicate work. Color Will impressed with the shake.

”If you mind my asking how long have you been a musician? You seem like you have years of experience behind you. I can tell from how confident you were in your singing. New musicians tend to have a sort of nervousness in their voice that can be heard if you pay enough attention.”

“Well that’s very kind of you to say, Virgil.” Will replies with a grin as he scratches the back of his neck. “As for how long I’ve been a musician, well….hmm…I’d probably say ever since I was ten. Funny enough, it was originally my older brother’s idea. He figured that I should have some sort of a hobby. An outlet. Something like that, you know. Seeing as how sports weren’t in the cards for me and that I can’t even draw a stick figure properly, we both kind of agreed on music. Lucky for me and everybody that has to listen to me, it turns out that at the very least, I’m decent enough at it to keep people from rioting. That, plus the fact that I absolutely love performing certainly doesn’t hurt.”

Taking a break from his little mini-spiel, Will listens on as Virgil speaks again. And once again, the black haired man finds himself feeling rather impressed at his contemporary’s commentary. Most classically trained pianists do tend to frown a bit on keyboards, after all. Seeing them as being things of laziness, or in the best case scenarios, as novelty ‘instruments.’ At least they did back in Chicago, anyways. Will finds himself chuckling as he continues to think on it, rather pleased to have found somebody that is rather open minded about things.

”Is the guitar the only instrument you play? Do you have experience in any others? I’m not much of a guitarist. As I spoke I stick to the classical.”

“Well, funny you should ask that, Virgil.” Will chuckles. “When I was in band in high school, I actually played trumpet, believe it or not. Second chair, so I suppose that I wasn’t’ too terrible at it. Guitar and vocals are my passion though. Although, it does make one wonder what exactly would happen if busted the brass out in a performance though. Certainly would raise some eyebrows, I’m sure. So then, how about you, Piano Man? Have you got yourself another instrument that you’re rather familiar with?”

”Always nice to find someone cut from the same cloth…”

“Well that’s very kind of you to say, Virgil.”

“Just giving credit where credit is due” Virgil spoke before silencing himself to listen to Will speak. So he’s been a musician since he was ten? Interesting. Not as long as myself I’m sure but long enough for him to get a good handle on his musical talent. Virgil admitted to himself he was impressed that this good sir had musical talent ranging back quite a few years. Virgil had seen certain musicians just get into the musical field in some naïve hope they would get famous and could do whatever they wanted. It was nice to see a musician who had done it for a while and keep it in mind for a hobby. Something to do when free time just piled up on them. Not too mention Will liked performing too. Virgil wasn’t one for performing for a lot of people but a small crowd never hurt.

“When I was in band in high school, I actually played trumpet, believe it or not.”

“Trumpet? I didn’t see that coming from you Will.” Virgil spoke with a laugh, obviously meaning it as a joke. “Didn’t expect a vocalist and guitarist would also have experience trumpet wise. An interesting combination I do say.” The gray haired man spoke to his fellow musician, adjusting his glasses. Apparently the trumpet didn’t stick for the man, the guitar and vocals apparently suiting the black haired man’s musical needs more. Nothing wrong with that.

So then, how about you, Piano Man? Have you got yourself another instrument that you’re rather familiar with?”

“Ah yes. Infact I’m quite skilled at the violin as well. And for a while I played around with the different variations of the piano that were present in Germany, which includes the organ, celesta, harpsichord, clavichord and continuo. Quite a list I know but eventually the grand piano stuck with me. I grew up with one constantly so I suppose I was most comfortable with it.” He spoke, stretching his fingers. “Germany’s got quite a bit of musical history so that helped when I first started out. It’s easy to research the musicians of history and learn what was unique to their own personal play style. My family helped when I first started. I was in my childhood, like you were, just a bit younger. It merely started with me playing a few keys. Over the years I obtained the skills to play such famous pieces like the one you heard earlier.”

ΞΞΞΞΞΞΞΞΞΞΞΞΞΞΞΞΞΞΞΞΞΞΞ
aiden: disturbed
timmy: content
tag: lian (and kidlings).

[/align]
His thoughts had strayed from Lian in the midst of the performance, wandering far away to what that song meant to him in so many different ways, but as she approached afterward, Timmy placed a hand gently on Aiden’s arm to slow him from preparing to leave so suddenly. ”Whoa, hold up. Lady’s got something to say.”

Aiden blinked and looked toward Lian as she came toward them, frowning as she was still a sizeable distance away and might manage to miss it. ”…humph.” Aiden crossed his arms over his chest and looked back at Timmy, quirking a brow. ”I know what you’re thinking.”

”Oh, you do, do you?”

He ignored the sharp smartness of Timmy’s retort and leaned close, forcing as much sternness into his rich brown gaze. The flecks of red showed when he was this close to him, and he planned to play that to his advantage as much as he could. Timmy wasn’t an easily intimidated man, but then again, he didn’t have to be. All he had to do was be close to Aiden for a moment, to forget the shit shuttering around them at high speeds and to have his mind focused on this one point, this one thought. ”She’s not Tess. Get the hell over it.”

As ready as Timmy should have been, he didn’t expect the sharp stab to his heart at those words. Instead he reached up and shoved Aiden away with a little huff, just a little nudge to remind Aiden of his place. He could have done so much more and, God, he wanted to. A little bruise on Aiden’s face would’ve been all too satisfying to look at for the next few days, but…damn it, Lian and those kids were right there, weren’t they? He brushed his shirt off, still scowling, before he looked toward Lian.

What he didn’t realize was the way his face softened in every way the instant that he looked at the woman. Timmy might not have been aware of it, but Aiden caught it without any hesitation. He hadn’t listened to Aiden, the bastard. Aiden sighed and turned away, setting to breaking down the stage again so that they could promptly return to the apartment with everything they’d brought with them.

When Lian bowed and began to speak, Timmy quirked a brow and crossed his arms tightly over his chest, still frowning but in a much more neutral capacity. Given the material she’d heard last time, it was incredibly bizarre to hear her speak so glowingly of what they performed today. Most of their crowds liked the harder stuff, and the stripped down shit was sort of just a novelty they pulled out at things like this, when they couldn’t get the whole band together or whatever. But there was something on her face that told him that she legitimately liked it, and he felt a little spark of warmth in his chest when she said that. The instant he realized it he shoved it away, kicked at it until it died again and left him with that vacant numbness he was so familiar with now. But when he nodded to her, there was something quite pleased in his eyes, something a little more relaxed about his frame. ”Yeah, well…thanks,” he said to both her and the kids. Aiden, for his part, nodded back at them but kept silent.

Timmy cleared his throat and ran a hand through his hair. ”Look, I…hate to run and all, but Aiden and I gotta get back. Got plans to make and things to do before the day’s out, y’know?” He tilted his head to the side, rubbing the back of his neck for a moment, before he nodded to Lian again. ”Guess I’ll just…see you later. Kids, don’t run off.” He gave them as stern a look as he could manage before he turned and collected his guitar case, already full from Aiden’s help, and the duo set off. Aiden didn’t try to speak again this time.

Lian watched Jacobs Timmy go, a slight smile tugging at the corners of her lips. Hm. He certainly was confusing, but at least he had been mostly civil today in front of the children. She didn’t know why a chance encounter over a season ago involving him running into her with a bunch of flyers had resulted in the two of them crossing paths absolutely everywhere she went, but Lian found her curiosity about him growing with each meeting they had. Mostly because she’d never met anyone like him before and just didn’t understand him.

Lian looked down to see Jalila tugging on her skirt again. ”Can we stay longer? Pleeeaase?” she begged, her dark brown eyes wide and pleading. Lian looked around the area. There were still musical acts going on, but it was dark and Jalila and Habib had school the next morning. Lian didn’t want to keep them out too late. It would be irresponsible of her and she knew Afra would want her children back at a decent hour. Besides, Lian was tired, too. Being pregnant meant she was always tired these days and she’d been carrying Hiba around for quite a while now. Her baby could use some rest, too.

”You have school tomorrow. We should go back,” she told the girl firmly, but kindly, smoothing her hair affectionately. Jalila pouted, but nodded, thankfully not putting up too much of a fight. It was always a toss-up with that girl. Sometimes she behaved herself and was a perfect little angel, at least in Lian’s eyes. More often, she tended to throw tantrums when she didn’t get her way and Lian really didn’t think she had the energy to argue with her today. She really was exhausted. She hadn’t even realized it until just now, but now that she had, she wanted a nap very badly.

”Fiiiine…” Jalila sighed sulkily, walking alongside Lian and Habib, scuffing the dirt with her toes as she walked. Wanting to bring the children home in a good mood so that Afra wouldn’t have to worry, Lian decided to change the subject.

”You have fun tonight?” she asked as Habib nodded with a small smile.

”Yeah. It was really cool. Thanks, Lian,” he told her, always polite. All the Bousa’id children were polite, at least most of the time. Jalila and Farrah, well… they had their off days, but none of them were bad children at all. Lian thought it a miracle how one woman could raise six children to be such wonderful people.

I’m afraid I won’t be able to do the same for the one child I have coming, she thought anxiously to herself before quickly pushing the thought away in favour of focusing on getting Afra’s children back home quickly and safely. ”I glad you have fun,” she smiled, making sure they both held onto her skirt while she carried Hiba home, Jalila and Habib towed along beside her.

“Trumpet? I didn’t see that coming from you Will.”

Chuckling, Will can’t really say that he’s surprised. Whenever his musical background comes up, most people probably wouldn’t associate a piece of shiny brass with a guy that sings and beats the tar out of guitar strings with a pick. It is always rather fun to let people in on that little tidbit of information though. To see the reactions play out; from disbelief to laughter to the rare person that nods and acknowledges it.

”Didn’t expect a vocalist and guitarist would also have experience trumpet wise. An interesting combination I do say.”

“Aw, well thank you, Virgil.” Will replies with a smile as he stretches his arms behind his head. “It was my older brother’s idea for me to get into guitar and vocals, actually. Started out with the trumpet, but truthfully…I was kind of crappy at playing it. Okay, not kind of crappy, I sucked out loud. May as well be honest here, hmm? I had fun trying to play the thing, yeah, but all in all, I think I’m happier where I’m at now. And truthfully, I think my family was happy with my decision too.”

Indeed, Will’s last sentiment wasn’t a joke by any means. Long story short, he was fairly terrible at the instrument. Probably part of the reason why his parents spent so much time away from home. Well, that, and business and responsibility and not wanting to raise their kids. Things like that. But those are boring and sad. Will’s well on his way to making a new friend! No need to throw boring stuff like bad parents into the mix, now is there? Well, time to see just what else Mr. Virgil can play…

”Ah yes. Infact I’m quite skilled at the violin as well.” Will nods his head as he listens. ”And for awhile I played around with the different variations of the piano that were present in Germany, which includes the organ, celesta, harpsichord, clavichord and continuo. Quite a list I know but eventually the grand piano stuck with me.”

That….is quite a list of instrumentation there. All the black haired man is able to do is smile and nod. Granted, Will was confident in his abilities, but after hearing all of the things that Virgil knows how to play…dang. Makes his guitar, vocals, and sub-par trumpeteering seem like small potatoes in comparison. Probably because it is. But no matter. Will is just thrilled for the simple fact that he has somebody to talk shop with.

As Virgil continues on with his family history, Will can’t help but smile at the support that he received from his parents. Maybe a minor deal as it’s what parents are supposed to do, but pretty big as far as Will is concerned, considering the fact that Will and Jill were more or less raised by their older brother rather than their parents. But no matter. Happy thoughts, yes?

“Psst! Hey, Will!”

Raising an eyebrow, Will turns his attention away from Virgil long enough to notice his bassist standing there with a look of concern etched on his face. Doing his best to put on a happy face, the musician is fairly sure that there is probably a bit of annoyance showing through on his features anyways. After all, it isn’t like it’s every day that Will gets a chance to meet fellow musicians like this. After asking what the deal was, Will finds himself grimacing and rubbing his temples with his hand. Turns out that his keyboardist went and got sick in between numbers. Really bad considering the fact that Will volunteered to go twice in order to make up for the lack of numbers this year. Where to find somebody that can play keyboards…which are like a guitar…which means Will is fairly stupid for not putting two and two together right off the bat.

“Say, Virgil?” Will begins, a smile on his face. “Um…here’s the deal. I was supposed to go and perform the last number here today…only problem is that my keyboardist is a little…under the weather…” Will trails off as he notices the aforementioned keyboardist running out of the manor, presumably to throw up in some bushes or something. “…um, yeah…so, I was wondering…I know you’re trained in classical and all, but maybe you know this song? Riders on the Storm by The Doors?” Noting as the man nods, Will’s grin grows wider and wider. “Oh, that is awesome. Pure awesome. Let’s do it!”

Taking in a deep breath to stave away any nervousness, Will makes his way onto the stage and takes a drink of water. Looking around at his surroundings, the musician can tell that his fellow band mates are a little skeptical looking. Oh, this should be a fun surprise for them. The way that Virgil had played beforehand and the fact that he’s willing to be up here on stage with Will is proof enough for the man that he knows what he’s doing. Sure enough, the music begins…and Virgil is dead on. Beautiful. His end of the bargain held up, Will beings to sing. The only thing to hope now as the song continues on is that the rest of the audience is going to enjoy the performance as much as the band is.
