The slow, melodic sound of a violin, accompanied by singer. Or perhaps the cacophonous clashing of drums. These are the sounds of the Obsidian Music Festival, a celebration of the diverse taste in music the village boasts. Efforts from Obsidian and Abyssinian’s music hotspots have seen this event come to Chrysocolla Estate. In the main hall of the estate a stage has been set up, enough room for one band to come up at a time. Spread out in the rest of the hall are several smaller stages reserved for other musical acts. Between musical acts, festival-goers may entertain themselves with food and drinks, an array of food has been set up along the back.

No matter what your preference in music, the festival is sure to have a genre for you. All musical acts, no matter who is performing or what instruments (if any) are used. The stage is large enough to accommodate one band, but individual acts are welcome. If people wish to perform they simply walk up when the stage is unoccupied and set up their equipment. The other, smaller, stages are welcomed to be used by solo acts. Between the many stages a dance floor has been set up for anyone who can’t simply listen to music, and wants to participate in their own way to the festival.

The mayor and his wife can be seen going about and greeting guests, and of course enjoying the entertainment. All performers will receive a small, gold trophy as a memento of their bravery, which the mayor or his wife will deliver once they step down from that stage.

----------------------------
Note: Please remember to include a tag in your post to indicate who your character is talking with.

[/doHTML] |

![]() Wes Nibai Fall 7th, Yr 08 5:20 PM Today's outfit: Click it! Tag: Open~ ----------------------------------- Ah, the long awaited Music Festival. Personally, Wes had been excited for tonight. Something about being a musician himself? Somewhat? This was quite an interesting display. All the stages set up along the hall. Not many people were here yet. But a few players had, claiming their own stages for the night. That's fine, he wasn't here for anything serious. His own guitar was slung over his back, poking over his shoulder. Now, where to set up? Or perhaps some more exploration was needed? Let it be that, then! There, in the corner somewhat. The one closest to the food tables, yet to be claimed. Well, the stake was set now! "Hello, beautiful" he murmured to himself, pulling out the guitar. Eve after the Summer King, Wes has been practicing even more like crazy. Had to impress. The stage fright had been mostly overcome by that competition. Only thing to do now was play. Luckily, he had stuffed some music in the case, songs he wanted to play. The mayor certainly had been generous enough to provide music stands. Anyone who passed by would be happy to hear him. Probably. Tonight, he was the performer. That practiced his music before actually playing. Thank god for the little music store in Abyssinian. That place had more secret store than he could count! |

This is the part where it gets ugly, and the solution getting rid of you. You'll never be safe in the shadows, I'll be waiting in the dark. Lian called out to the excited little girl who was running ahead of her through the crowd of people. Lian didn't have a hope of keeping up with her with her swollen belly, especially not while holding a fussy two-year-old in her arms. Granted, Hiba had been fairly quiet and complacent today. It was difficult enough standing up from a sitting position, let alone running after a rambunctious child... actually, make that three rambunctious children. Farrah, Karim and Malik were old enough to take care of themselves, and Malik was away at college, anyway, but Habib, Hiba and Jalila were all under the age of ten and Lian had taken up the unofficial position of secondary caretaker to Afra.

It's a good thing, Lian thought to herself. Especially when she gets... well, too sad to take care of things. It's good to have someone else to help. That was how Lian ended up taking Habib, Hiba and Jalila to the music festival tonight. Afra was in one of those melancholy states again and Lian had offered to help take some of the burden off her shoulders by looking after the younger children. Karim and Farrah may be old enough to look after themselves, but they were still teenagers, after all. They shouldn't have to act like parents all the time, and Lian was going to be a parent soon enough, anyway, so it was good practice.

Habib walked quietly beside Lian, occasionally reaching up to tickle his little sister. Lian gently pushed his hand back down with a soft smile and a little shake of her head. The baby was starting to get sleepy and doze off against Lian's chest, and a sleeping Hiba meant a quiet, well-behaved Hiba. She's a sweet child, but she's such a handful with her disability, Lian thought with a little sigh as she gently stroked the little girl's hair. She looked through the throngs of people, expecting to see Jalila in the distance, darting in between people, but she was nowhere to be found. Biting her lip, Lian looked down at Habib. "Where your sister?" she asked him. Habib only shrugged and Lian's heart started doing a wild drumroll.

Alright... calm down. She can't be far. Panicking will only frighten the other two. Keep calm... she attempted to remind herself, but it did little good to comfort her. Jalila was only ten! She couldn't be left to wander around a crowded area unattended! Anything could happen to her! What would Afra say if she knew Lian had lost her daughter?! Quan Yin, what if someone hurt her?! One horrible scenario after the next played in Lian's mind and she bit down hard on her lower lip.

A tugging on her wool skirt brought her back to the moment. Habib was looking up at her with worried eyes. "Are you okay, Lian?" he asked. Lian forced a reassuring smile and gave his hair a motherly stroke.

"Yes, of course," she told him softly. "We must find your sister, though. Come." She grabbed Habib's hand and gently pulled him along with her and the now sleeping baby. Lian's eyes scanned the area in a panic, looking for a tiny Indian girl darting between the throngs of villagers enjoying the festivities, her heart beat getting more and more uneven with each passing second that Lian didn't catch sight of Jalila. Lian gave Habib's hand a light squeeze as she walked, partially to comfort him and partially to comfort herself. Struggling to hold back frightened tears, Lian prayed that Jalila was safe and somewhere nearby.

I'm going to be a terrible mother! I just lost one of the children I was supposed to be looking after! How am I going to take care of my own child?! Lian's pace quickened slightly, still scanning the area with wild, frightened eyes. Where is she?!

"Jalila!" Lian called as she searched the crowded area for the little girl. As always, the f**king kid was primping in the bathroom or whatever. "See you there?"

Aiden looked toward him from the corner of his eye, quirking his brow as he did so. "Are you joking?" He chuckled softly, whisking a comb through his hair a few times as he turned to face Timmy, leaning gently against the countertop of the bathroom. "Do you honestly think we'd rehearse that much and then me decide not to show up on a whim? C'mon."

Timmy gave a roll of his eyes in response, shaking his head. "Can't fault a guy for checking. Don't take too long." Prissy little thing. There were some days that Timmy got along with Aiden as if he was his own brother. Today was not that day. Something was just...picking at Timmy lately, whether he liked it or not, and he wasn't being the cheeriest of people with it constantly on his mind. Aiden, with his lack of emotions and his full grasp of the concept of apathy and neutrality, drove Timmy insane when he was in these sorts of moods. God, it was like he was pregnant or something. He nudged the door open with his foot and let it slam shut behind him without a thought, heading down the hallway of the apartment building. He had quite a walk to the Crysalo Estate or whatever the hell it was called, especially if he wanted to get a stage. Apparently this island was full of musicians, according to Aiden. Timmy had yet to see if this was true. If anything, he had extremely high standards to what was actually a musician. Anything else? Posers, the lot of them.

The estate came into view rather quickly, however, and Timmy slid past people with his sort of inner sixth sense to avoid touching them at all costs. His guitar wasn't quite so lucky. It banged against the legs of various people, though Timmy only glanced over his shoulder to be sure it hadn't been damaged before he moved on with life and continued scanning the area for any sort of available stage. Given that it was just him and Aiden, they didn't exactly need that f**king huge thing up near the front, as tempting as it was to be a snipe and take it up for the next three hours just singing whatever the hell came to them. Leading the crowd in a rousing chorus of "It's A Small World" would sure be entertaining, especially if it drove the higher ups crazy. Timmy shook his head with a little smirk, heading toward a nearby available stage. Eh. He'd be nice today. But just this once.

He didn't hear the incessant happy giggling until a small child slammed into his legs and he shifted a bit, catching his balance. "Whoa!" He looked down, immediately seeing a little girl with dark hair and darker skin. If he was right, and he always was, of course, he wouldn't be surprised if she was akin to that family running Panch Phoron. He hadn't seen any other Indian families on this island, after all, and he was pretty sure he'd seen this little girl with them once or twice, maybe even in the restaurant. It was one of Aiden's favorite places to eat. No surprise that he knew almost all of those working there by face, at the least. "Watch where you're running." She stared up at him, though was still smiling rather sweetly and cheerfully before she gave a few nods. "...where's your mom?"

"Oh, I'm here with Miss-"

"JALILA!" A call interrupted the little girl's sentence as she whirled around to look for the source of it, though being as tiny as she was it wasn't any surprise that she could find it. Timmy, however, with his extra height pinpointed a certain Asian woman making her way through the crowd of people and holding an Indian baby to her while another smaller boy followed her. F**k. Why the hell was he always running into this woman? He huffed out a little sigh, though placed a gentle hand on the little girl's shoulders without hesitation. "You with Lian?"

"Mm-hmm~!" The girl, who Timmy assumed was this Jalila thing, nodded emphatically, and Timmy sighed again. No doubt the woman would accuse him of kidnapping the girl. He guided Jalila carefully through the crowd, his hand repositioning itself on the back of her silky head in order to keep her from being whacked by anything, until he nearly ran into Lian. Lian called, her voice rising with panic each time she called out the little girl's name and she didn't come running. Something had to be wrong. Jalila was high-spirited and liked to run off and give Lian miniature heart attacks, but she always came back, giggling and smiling as soon as Lian called for her. Always. Why wasn't she running back now? Had something happened to her? Lian would never forgive herself if something bad happened to one of the children while they were under her care... and she was going to be a mother soon. Quan Yin, what a frightening thought.

"Lian? Do you think she's okay?" Habib asked quietly, his dark brown eyes filled with worry. Lian took a moment to stop and hug him close to comfort him. What could she say to that?

"I sure she fine. Only lost. We need find her, that be all," she reassured him with a brave smile in her broken English. Habib nodded, falling silent, and Lian grabbed his hand again, continuing her search as Hiba moved slightly against Lian's chest in her sleep. Everywhere she turned, she expected to see Jalila running towards them, and each time that didn't happen, Lian's heart raced even faster until she started to feel light-headed from worry.

The only place she hadn't yet scoured was a large, bustling crowd milling about one of the stages where a rather frightening-looking blonde woman was singing a capella in a low, gravelly voice. Lian bit her lip. There were a lot of people with heavy instruments bustling around there, not paying attention to where they were going. It would be all too easy for someone to accidentally knock little Hiba's head with an instrument and seriously injure her, or Lian's baby could get hurt. She'd already had a close call not long ago. The memory of tripping backwards into the jagged rocks of the waterfall and Jacobs Timmy pulling her out and rushing her to the clinic resurfaced and she took in a small, sharp breath.

She never thought she'd think this, but thank Quan Yin for Jacobs Timmy. Both her and her baby would most likely be dead if he hadn't been there and done what he did. Why he would have bothered to dive into those sharp rocks himself to save a woman he had only met on a couple of occasions and who had been horribly rude to him, Lian didn't know, but she was grateful to him. She technically owed the man her life, she admitted to herself as she braved the large crowd, telling Habib to hold onto her sweater while she shielded Hiba with both arms, still scanning for Jalila.

As though her thoughts had somehow summoned him there, without warning, Lian found herself standing in front of Jacobs Timmy, wearing his usual neutral expression and toting a guitar over his shoulder... and holding a smiling Jalila by the shoulders with his hands. "You lose this?" he grunted gruffly as Jalila wriggled out of his grasp and ran up to Lian.

"Hi Lian!" she giggled before noticing her caretaker's strained expression. "Oh... were you worried?" she asked. Lian sighed and gave the girl a quick one-armed hug before returning them to protect Hiba's head from the swarms of people.

"Yes," she frowned slightly. "I not want you run off by yourself again." she scolded gently, her tone stern but kind. Jalila nodded and scuffed the dirt underneath her shoes with her toe, a sheepish look on her face. Lian quickly glanced up at Jacobs Timmy before snapping her gaze down again. She wasn't going to forget her manners today. "You should say thank you for Jacobs Timmy help you find me."

"Thank you, Mr. Jacobs," Jalila mumbled, her sheepish expression still present. Well, at least she knew what she did was wrong. Plus she was safe. That was the most important thing. Lian didn't see a need to continue to reprimand the girl further. She was completely fine and she had learned her lesson.

Lian gave as deep a bow as she could with her protruding belly and Hiba cradled in her arms. [align=right]Fall 07, Year 08 5:30 p.m. Outfit: Black shoes, blue jeans, dark gray long john top Tag!: Virgil[/align] “Alrighty, boys! Thanks a ton for doing this for me. Given the night off and you’re still backing me up…I heart you guys.” Smiling and nodding at his band, Will takes in a deep breath as if to kill what little amount of stage fright is in his system. Not a whole lot, considering this has been a way of life for him for the better part of ten years. Crowd size certainly isn’t an issue…but maybe it’s the contents of the crowd that have a smidge of doubt in the black haired man’s mind. After all, it isn’t like this is Chicago anymore. Odds are that he’s probably going to be seeing a lot of these people in the future. Bah, after the first few chords it’ll be fine. Now humming chords to himself as him and his band make their way on stage, Will takes a look at the instruments on display. Well, for being provided as a community chest of sorts for anyone wanting to use them, they do appear to be in good shape. As an added bonus, it was a rather nice surprise to come here with their gear and find out that they didn’t have to spend any time to set up. Plus the walk to his nearby apartment to drop off their gear was a good way of getting loosened up beforehand. Although with them being a little less self conscious than Will, the musician figures that it won’t be that much of a big deal for them. “Good evening, ladies and gents of Obsidian!” Will replies with a grin as he steps behind the microphone. “I do hope that everybody is having themselves a good time here today! And I hope even further that everybody will keep having a good time after we have our turn up here! Well, with that being said, I would like to think that it’s enough of things being said…so time for a little tune!” Taking a brief moment to clear his throat, Will takes in a deep breath as the music begins up. Only vocals today, so no guitar to worry about. No matter. Having his hands free, the man figures at least maybe he could do some tricks with the mike stand or something. A little bit of entertainment to go with the music…bah, best to wing it as he goes along. Not wanting to miss his cue, Will begins to sing away. Instruments and microphone are a touch off, but nothing too bad at least. Besides, it doesn’t look like anybody is planning on throwing stuff at them anytime soon, so no need to worry. -- “Thank you, ladies and gents!” Smiling and bowing to the crowd, Will makes his way off stage, cheerfully collecting his band’s little gold trophy of epic participation as he does so. Pleasant enough little memento at any rate. Something that will probably wind up being proudly displayed behind the bar in Moonstone. Ah well, at least it’ll have a home at any rate. Better than sitting in a desk drawer somewhere collecting dust. As for now, well why not laze about and see what everybody else has to offer? Always fun to watch other people perform, after all. |

Since his arrival at the island he had rarely gotten to experience music. He was sure his skills had gotten a little rusty considering how he had yet to get a piano but soon he would. He was missing playing far too much. Even if he lived alone, playing again would help keep the house feeling comfortable, the songs always awakening the memories he craved and despised so much.

Virgil made his way toward the estate, having closed the shop down a bit earlier so he could get here without wasting too much time. Maybe Cyrus wouldn't have liked that but Virgil didn't particularly worry at the moment. Cyrus was on a cruise and Virgil was running the shop at the moment. So if the temporary shopkeeper wanted to close the store down a bit earlier for a day, so be it. Oh how he wished they had a piano. After all a piano was hardly transportable so if even he managed to buy his own at the moment, he couldn't exactly get it to the festival.

The second he entered the area where the festival was being held, he was overwhelmed by the sounds and melodies, a smile coming to his face. What a welcomed sound it was. He looked to the stage, looking upon it. There was a small band apparently, singing an interesting song to say the least. It was nice but not Virgil's cup of tea of course. Still he gave them the credit and respect fellow musicians deserved by taking a seat and listening to them. As the song came to an end Virgil clapped for them before standing and making his way to the stage. He needed to claim it after all before anyone else did.

He glanced upon the stage, grinning when they indeed had a piano up there. How lucky he was that he could be playing his best instrument. As he began walking up the stage he had spotted the singer from the previous band, giving him a polite nod. Perhaps he could talk to him after his show? Either way Virgil approached the microphone and cleared his throat before speaking in his German accented voice. "Greetings. This will be a change of pace after that last song but regardless I hope you enjoy."

He turned from the microphone and moved over to the piano, setting on the bench and moving the protector from the keys. He popped his knuckles and placed his fingers lightly upon the keys. He felt his heart begin to beat much faster, his mind being overwhelmed. This song he would play....he knew it like the back of his hand. Chopin was one of his most favorite musicians after all and he prayed quietly that his skills weren't too rusty and that his playing could do Chopin's legacy justice. Taking one deep breath...he began to play.

For six minutes his fingers hit every note they were supposed to, his body swaying as his arms moved to tap each key so skillfully. He kept his eyes closed throughout the whole song, the keys being seen in his head. The past overwhelmed him, him hearing all the voices in his head all over again, not letting it affect his playing. After the minutes passed and the song hit it's ending notes, Virgil's fingers slowed and soon stopped as he sighed, opening his eyes very slowly and reluctantly.

"You did good as always..."

Virgil barely kept his hands from shaking, getting up and bowing humbly to the audience, collecting the trophy and making his way off stage. That trophy would look nice up on a shelf in his house now. Perhaps he could get a music room constructed for his house soon and keep it in there along with the many instruments that were bound to be bought for it? Just go up and do your thing and get back down again and go home. That's it, Gretchen told herself with an uncomfortable grunt as she ran through the lyrics of what she'd been working on all season in her mind. She didn't need to run over them. They were burned into her mind so deeply, she could probably sing the damn thing in her sleep, but rehearsing silently in her mind helped keep her focused on the music and nothing else. This song was dangerous. It could lure her into the past if she wasn't careful and that was one place Gretchen sure as hell never wanted to be again.

She had been going to sing something different. Something tougher, less emotional. Your typical "hey don't f**k with me or I'll f**k you up" song, but... this one clawed viciously at Gretchen, desperate to get out and after several nights of torment and horrific nightmares, she'd relented and put it down on paper. Now it was just a matter of singing it without being a crybaby and breaking down. Hell no, that wasn't Gretchen.

She looked around, one eyebrow raised at the scene in front of her. Crowds of people milled about several stages; one large one at the front of the estate and several smaller ones situated around the area. Some of them were already taken up with performers, but there were a couple empty ones. It was tempting to take the big stage at the front and steal the whole show, but it was just her singing one song. She didn't even have any instruments. F**k, she didn't even have any music written down. Just the lyrics and what she had come up with in her head.

Gretchen scowled at all the people with their violins and guitars and keyboards, looking over bars of music that they understood as clearly as if it were English, feeling an uncomfortable twinge of jealousy. Sure, she'd wanted to learn how to read music and play instruments. Just like every other kid out there, but no street kid like her was ever going to get an opportunity like that. No one cared about street kids. No one bothered to take a second look at them or give them a chance to do something more than join a gang and become a criminal. Gretchen knew that life all too well. Looking around to see that nearly every musician there had some sort of formal training made her painfully aware that she was out of her element.

F**k, I knew this was stupid... she thought, turning around to go home but a sudden pain in her gut as though someone had punched her stopped her in her tracks. So she was going to run home like a wussy little baby? The other kids in the playground were bigger than her so she was going to go hide in the bathroom or some s**t like that? Since when had she become such a f**king coward? The song... she hadn't written it for her. It didn't matter if she royally f**ked it up. It didn't matter if no one liked it. She hadn't written it for them, either.

"F**k..." Gretchen muttered, rubbing her forehead as she strode over to one of the smaller stages that were currently unoccupied, roughly elbowing her way through the thick crowd of people and their bulky instruments, climbing on stage and seating herself on the high stool that had been provided. She gave the mic a small tap. It was working. Sweet. Gretchen wasn't sure if she'd know how to get it working if it wasn't.

She looked out at the people around the stage. Most of them had stopped to look at her... except for some Asian lady with a train of kids who was talking to that guy who lived across the hall. What was his name again? Tommy? Johnny? Jimmy? Whatever. They didn't have to listen if they didn't want to. Gretchen didn't really give a s**t one way or the other. Just get this s**t over with, she told herself, taking in a breath and beginning what had been engraved in her memory for a week now.

"You took my hand, you showed me how, you promised me you'd be around..." she began in her low, rough voice. Her uncle used to tell her it was like listening to sandpaper scraping against a wall. Somehow, he had always managed to make it sound like a compliment. "I took your words and I believed in everything you said to me..." Goddamn, what a f**king idiot she'd been to believe her. As if someone like Gretchen ever had a hope of being better than the filth she was born into. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Wasn't that the saying? Yet Krysta'd always had this way of making Gretchen believe impossible things and strive for them. It doesn't f**kin' matter now, Gretchen reminded herself bitterly. She ain't comin' back. You made sure o' that. You f**ked up her whole damn life.

"If someone said three years from now, you'd be long gone, I'd stand up and punch them out, 'cause they're all wrong..." Not even three years. Gretchen hadn't even been lucky enough to have three years with her. Not that she ever deserved to have a single second with her. "I know better, 'cause you said forever and ever. Who knew?" She should have known. She should have known she'd only screw things up in the end. The only good thing to ever happen to her and she as good as killed her. It didn't matter who pulled the f**king trigger. She would have never been there that night if it weren't for Gretchen. I'm so sorry, baby. I'm so sorry... but sorry didn't do a dead person any good, did it?

"I wish I could touch you again. I wish I could still call you 'friend'. I'd give anything..." Gretchen's voice fell lower again, cracking just slightly. F**k, Gretchen, keep your s**t together! She couldn't f**k this up. It wasn't for her, or for any one of these f**kers gawping at her. It was for Krysta. If she could do one f**king thing right, she could sing a song about her without falling to pieces.

With just a barely audible clearing of her throat before the next line, Gretchen got a hold of herself, already regretting putting herself and the thoughts that tormented her at night out there for every goddamn person to see. "When someone said 'Count your blessings now, 'fore they're long gone,' I guess I just didn't know how. I was all wrong..." Oh, how wrong Gretchen had been. How wrong she'd been to think that she deserved someone like Krysta. How wrong she'd been to believe that she could change, get away from the BKs, make herself into a productive member of society and have a happy life with her. She should have known it would end in blood. How could it have ended any other way? God, she was so f**king stupid. "They knew better. Still, you said forever and ever. Who knew?" I SHOULD HAVE F**KING KNOWN, DAMMIT!

"I'll keep you locked in my head, until we meet again..." As if Gretchen could get her out of her head, even if she wanted to. God, it was like a f**king movie reel in her mind every single night. It was why she couldn't sleep and why Naomi gave her strange looks in the morning when Gretchen walked out of her room shaken and wound up so tightly, the smallest noise made her jump out of her skin. Imma see you again, Krysta. I promise. Hopefully real soon, 'cause I can't take none o' this s**t no more. "I won't forget you, my friend; what happened..." No, she never would forget. None of it. Good and bad, it was all stamped on her like a brand.

Reaching the last chorus of the song, Gretchen let her restraint go and her gravely, rough voice grew from low and solemn to harshly passionate. F**k it, f**k all of it, she thought viciously as she belted out the last of the song, not giving a f**k if she sounded like s**t. She needed this; to get it out there and get this agony that was roiling inside her out of her system. Who knew when she'd get another chance? She grabbed the mic stand and yanked it closer to her, as if she was angry at it and wanted it to really hear what she was screaming at it. "That last kiss I'll cherish until we meet again, and time makes it harder..." Time heals all wounds. What a bunch of bulls**t. Every day, it just got worse and worse. The memories didn't fade. They just played over and over again, tormenting you for the rest of your miserable life. How could anything be good without her? "But I'll keep your memory. You visit me in my sleep. My darling, who knew?" Please baby... don't go away. Those memories are all I got. Please don't let 'em fade. Don't let me let you fade away.

"My darling... my darling... I miss you... my darling... who knew?" God, I miss you f**king much, Krysta... Gretchen's intensity slowly ebbed away as she softly mumbled the last lines into the microphone and took a deep breath to slow her pounding heart and trembling fingertips, feeling completely drained. Without another word to the audience, Gretchen slipped off the stool and trudged off the stage, rubbing her temples. God, her head was f**king pounding. Where the f**k did Naomi keep the Tylenol again? Dammit...

She heard some people clapping, though she didn't turn to see who they were. Well, some people had liked it, she guessed. Maybe some chick who knew nothing about music singing a capella from memory hadn't turned out quite as s****y as she'd thought. Well, whatever. Not like she really gave two s**ts at the moment. God, she just wanted a stiff drink, some Tylenol and her bed.

[/doHTML] |

Fall 7, Year 08 5:15 PM Tag: Open The estate was already bustling when Annette arrived, following the mixing strains of music through the front door. She hadn't really dressed up for the event, but she had taken care in choosing her clothes tonight. Nothing with holes or permanent stains, and better-looking than her usual work wear. She'd eventually decided on her default 'nice' outfit: a pair of nice black jeans, her only dress shoes--black leather boots, lighter and much more stylish than her work pair, that her mother had given her a few years back--and a white turtleneck, with a white-and-black checked handkerchief over her hair. She was relieved, looking around at the crowd as she got inside, that she didn't seem to be underdressed. She had trouble with that, sometimes, and it didn't bother her too much, but she still half-expected to come home to her mother scolding her for inappropriate dress when it happened. She carried her battered fiddle case, looking around to see if there was someplace safe to put it. Annette had taken a while, after hearing about the Music Festival, to decide if she was going to play or not. She'd decided immediately that she was going to attend; it would be great to hear what kind of music was popular around the island, and the announcement had implied that there would be dancing. Besides, it was a chance to meet other music fans. But whether to go, listen, and dance, or take along her fiddle and go up on stage--that was a harder decision. Her fiddle-playing was decent, but not what she'd call great, and she only knew a handful of songs well enough to dare playing them for a bunch of strangers. Most of them were dance songs, though, and she thought that might be appreciated. In the end, she'd decided to just bring her fiddle along and jump in if there was a lull somewhere that looked like it needed filling. As she wound her way towards the main stage, surveying the dance floor, she stopped to listen to the various performers on the small stages. Most of what she heard sounded good, though it wasn't all to her taste; she wandered away in the middle of a couple of acts that were way too slow or quiet for Annette's preferences. At one of the stages, a pink-haired woman was singing without accompaniment--the first person she had seen without some kind of instrument--and she stopped to listen. It wasn't exactly her type of song, but the singer was putting a lot of emotion into it, and Annette liked her voice. When it was over, she applauded alongside the other listeners and looked around, trying to decide what act to listen to next. It looked like the dancing hadn't really started, if it was going to, but that might change later in the evening; there was all night left. |

It was a well-known fact that he could look a bit scary and intimidating. God. Little girls were f**king weird. He glanced up toward Lian a moment later, however, brow still quirked, and witnessed the way she reacted rather awkwardly. He felt like a bizarre spectator, looking at something he didn't need to see. After all, this was very obviously a moment between a mother and daughter, in a way, protective and loving yet a great deal of respect on the girl's part. Gave Timmy a little glance into what Lian's life would be when she finally popped that thing out.

Gave him a little reminder of Abby and their mom.

He shook his head with a little gruffness in his throat when he spoke again. "Yeah, well...no problem, kid." He attempted to glare at her rather menacingly. Aiden was always better at that than he was. He was more of the...punch-first-and-glare-later variety. "Don't do it again. Or whatever." That...worked, right? He looked away from the quartet of individuals again, crossing his arms tightly over his chest as he scanned around the crowd. Lian was talking, but he was a bit distracted from catching sight of a red-cloaked man making his way casually through the crowd. Timmy lifted a hand, calling out. "Hey, over here!" Aiden apparently saw him, as he gave Timmy a little chin pop and immediately started swimming through the crowd to get to him.

His eyes still on his approaching bandmate, Timmy gave a little shrug to Lian's words. "Yeah, guess I'm just...around like that." He looked back toward her. In that moment, he immediately remembered the threat of Aiden seeing her. Oh, f**k. "So I guess I'll see-"

"The hell are you doing?" Aiden interrupted right at the wrong moment, and Timmy closed his eyes slowly for a moment, preparing for the explosion that he anticipated. "Thought I told you to stake out..."

Aiden trailed off as he stared at Lian, slowly quirking a brow of his own. His words died off, until there was only an awkward silence between the group of individuals. He'd seen the woman in cloaked darkness at Andesite. Timmy had hinted long ago to the presence of a woman on the island who looked incredibly similar to Tess. But this was just...wow. Aiden narrowed his eyes slightly, frowning intensely at the woman as the wind slid briskly by them and caught his hair and his cloak, scattering them rather impressively. "...who is this?" he asked rather softly, purely for Timmy's ears.

Timmy cleared his throat, nodding toward Lian. "This is Lian Sung, and...kids." He paused, leaning over toward Aiden to murmur something near his ear. "Look, man, I tried to warn you, I swear."

Aiden waved him off rather absently, still staring at Lian with a strong sense of intensity in his gaze. "Good evening, Mi-..." He trailed off for a moment, glancing at the arm held to her side. There was a ring on her left hand. "...Mrs. Sung. If you will excuse us, my partner and I must set up for our performance." With a small, polite incline of his head, Aiden turned swiftly and set off toward one of the nearby empty stages, weaving his way through the people. Anything to get away from that woman.

Timmy stood there in silence for a moment, studying the ground beneath his feet, before he looked up at Lian again. "That's my roommate, Aiden. [align=right]Fall 07, Year 08 5:40 p.m. Outfit: Black shoes, blue jeans, dark gray long john top Tag!: Virgil[/align] Well, that went rather well if Will says so himself. Still juggling the small trophy between his hands, the black haired musician can’t quite remove the grin from his face. Not a arrogant smile, but rather a one due to the sheer amount of fun and energy in the air. Everybody is in a good mood, everybody is playing well. No reason not to be smiling, really. Hell, maybe he’ll go back up there later even. But for now, may as well enjoy the offerings of everybody else participating today. Making his way over to another stage, Will manages to catch the end of Madison’s performance. Not too shabby, really. Definitely more than a casual person would expect from a waitress. Color Will impressed. Nodding his head to the beat, the man gives his employee a round of applause and a thumbs up as she finishes her song. Always nice to know that there is somebody that he can have fill in for him if he ever goes down with a cold or anything. Will thinks of going up to the stage to shoot the breeze with the young woman, but something catches his eye. Well, rather his ear. ”A piano? Hmm…” Curiosity getting the best of him, Will makes his way over to another stage to get a better look and listen. Sure enough, that would most certainly be a piano being played. And rather well too, from the sounds of it. Now completely hooked, Will grabs himself a seat as he listens to the brown and gray haired man tickle the ivory. Much to the musician’s delight, he finds himself so entranced with the musical performance that he the thought process of that being his natural hair color or not have come to an end. Who cares about hair at a festival about music, after all? Well, there is the whole rock star look that one could go for, but that really doesn’t work on a pianist, does it? As the song ends, Will finds himself standing up and giving credit where credit is due. Namely, a nice loud ovation. The guy did an awesome job and deserves as much at any rate. Now he’ll hop off the stage, go and get a nice little trophy, and be on his merry way. Well, he hops off the stage, gets a nice little trophy, but as a pleasant surprise, it seems as though he’s making his way towards the vocalist. ”Evening my fellow musician. I must admit I liked your song.” “Hmm? Well, thank you!” Will replies with a grin. “Likewise, I gotta say I liked your playing. Been a long time since I’ve heard anybody play an actual piano, let alone as good as you did. Keyboards, yeah, but not the whole full blown piano. Props to you for that…gah, where are my manners?” Chuckling, Will holds his trophy with his left hand before extending his right. “Will Fortune, vocalist and guitarist at your service. Nice to meet you, mister…?” |

He wasn’t sure how he would respond of course, the man possibly just appearing friendly. So that’s why Virgil was pleasantly surprised when the man complimented his own playing. That was certainly a joy. It was nice to know his piano playing, such a classical art, was appreciated. While a man of music, Virgil was not too interested in the modern style of music, it seeming perhaps too rough in his eyes. It wasn’t quite as defined as the piano was. But then again a master of his or her instrument could always make it seem defined in it’s own sort.

Virgil snapped out of the thoughts though when he noticed the man moving to the trophy to his left hand and stretching out the right for a handshake. At the mention of his name Virgil smiled, stretching his own right hand out, giving the man’s hand a firm handshake. “Virgil Drach, classical musician from Germany. Pleasure to meet you Will. If you mind my asking how long have you been a musician? You seem like you have years of experience behind you. I can tell from how confident you were in your singing. New musicians tend to have a sort of nervousness in their voice that can be heard if you pay enough attention.”

Virgil spoke, his knowledge and experience in the musical field obvious. Virgil knew what he was talking about, having musical experience since his childhood. He had pratically grown up near a piano. Even used to be a singer too but…that feel through a few years ago. Not something he liked remembering but something his mind insist on remembering. The piano playing was hard enough to do without her prescence but without her voice to back him up his singing didn’t seem as filled as it used to be.

“Oh and thank you for your compliments on my piano playing.” He spoke, snapping out his thoughts once more to talk to the fellow musician. “Keyboards you say? An interesting, modern take on the classical piano. It doesn’t quite have the nobility and dignification a piano has but it’s a fun enough instrument on it’s own.” He spoke, giving his glasses an adjustment before looking to Will. “Is the guitar the only instrument you play? Do you have experience in any others? I’m not much of a guitarist. As I spoke I stick to the classical.” He spoke with a laugh, smiling friendly to him.

Virgil never minded making friends and now having met another musician, Virgil was rather happy. While Peter and Cyrus were good friends in their own aspects, neither seemed to be able to talk too much onto the finer art of music. However Virgil still liked to shoot the breeze with them regardless. Good men, loyal to their loved ones. Just one of the reasons Virgil respected them. Not to mention Cyrus gave him a job too and ever since then Virgil had always felt a debt to Cyrus. But now Virgil met a third male to shoot the breeze with, hoping this little conversation could get a friendship started for the two musicians.

[/doHTML] |

Lian’s main focus, however, was on Jacobs Timmy, though she still kept her gaze lowered politely. Not once now, but twice, he had seemed to materialize out of nowhere just in time to help her during a time of panic. She highly doubted that Jacobs Timmy went out looking for her on the off chance she may need rescuing. The thought was actually rather ridiculous, but the coincidence was still an unsettling one. ”I sure she not do such thing again, Jacobs Timmy,” Lian told the man softly, still looking down. ”She much good manner child.” Well, she could have tantrums and be quite the handful a lot of the time, but she generally tried to behave herself with Lian and Lian knew the girl had a good heart. That smile of hers was always enough to bring a smile to Lian’s normally neutral features as well, no matter what kind of mood she was in. Jalila’s energy was infectious… when she was displaying it positively. Jalila beamed at Lian’s praise and Lian looked down at her for a moment to smile affectionately back before bringing her attention back to the frowning, bearded man in front of her, though it didn’t stay there for long.

Her gaze was torn away from Jacobs Timmy as he turned to look at a figure in the distance, the tiny Chinese woman struggling to see over the crowd of people who were all much taller than her. Lian couldn’t make out what he was looking at and she was pretty sure if she tried to stand on tiptoe to see, it wouldn’t make much of a difference, plus she’d probably either drop Hiba or unbalance herself and fall… or both. It wasn’t worth the risk. Her eyes snapped back to him, though her gaze was carefully averted from his face in respect. She’d blatantly stared at him enough since he’d run over her in the street with all those flyers. He must think she was the absolute foulest, rudest woman he’d ever met… yet he’d saved her and her baby anyway. Not for the first time, Lian found herself thinking that Jacobs Timmy was a very confusing man. He called out to whoever he was looking at before turning back to Lian. ”Yeah, guess I'm just...around like that,” he muttered gruffly before he paused for just a second, his scowl deepening.

Lian lifted a brow slightly in confusion. Had… she done something to offend him? Again? How could she have? Today, for once, she’d managed to speak with him without rudely staring into his face or running into him or causing him to dive into a dangerous waterfall… actually, she was pretty relieved to find that their encounter today had been more or less normal so far, which left her utterly confused as to why he’d be scowling at her like that. Well… she supposed a scowl was just his natural expression, as bizarre as that sounded. She’d only ever seen three expressions on his face: shock, panic and… that weirdly neutral scowl… if there was such a thing. Quan Yin, I need to stop thinking about things like this with him. It just gives me headaches, Lian thought to herself with just the slightest frown.

The person Jacobs Timmy shouted to broke through an opening in the crowd and Lian was able to get a proper look at him. A tall, pale man with frighteningly reddish-brown eyes and long black hair wearing a red cape. Lian struggled to keep her expression politely neutral and avoid openly gaping at how ridiculous he looked. And I thought Jacobs Timmy had strange fashion sense, she thought with a surprised blink. She decided she would never again judge Jacobs Timmy’s attire too harshly, or anyone else’s for that matter. Of course, she had seen the man perform at Andesite a few weeks ago and thought he looked equally ridiculous then, but she had assumed it was a stage outfit. She never imagined that he would walk around like that on a daily basis. This man didn’t seem too happy, either. ”The hell are you doing?” he demanded of Jacobs Timmy before registering Lian’s presence. Lian quickly pulled Jalila and Habib closer to her in a poor attempt to cover their ears with her one free hand, frowning with disapproval at his language in front of young children. When the man finally turned to look at her, Lian got an uncomfortable feeling running up her spine. He was looking at her almost as if he knew her from somewhere. It was the same way Jacobs Timmy had looked at her when they’d first met. What on earth? What was so intriguing about her that these two men found the need to stare at her like she was a ghost? She didn’t think she was all that frightening. Actually, if anything, they were the scary ones here.

As if they couldn’t make the situation any more confusing and awkward, they began whispering to each other, giving Lian quick, sideways glances. Feeling her cheeks burn uncomfortably, she lowered her head even more until her chin was almost resting against her collarbone. How was she supposed to respond to such obvious rudeness? Then again, had she really expected anything more out of Jacobs Timmy and whoever this friend of his was? No. No, she hadn’t. Timmy gruffly introduced her and the children, though “kids” wasn’t exactly a proper introduction in Lian’s mind. She cleared her throat softly, bowing only slightly so as not to disturb Hiba. ”This be Bousa’id Jalila, Bousa’id Habib and Bousa’id Hiba,” she spoke softly, but the man swept past her before she ever finished. She doubted whether he even heard it, though she did note that he addressed her more formally and respectfully than Jacobs Timmy ever had. Odd…

She watched him make his way through the crowd to one of the empty stages before Jacobs Timmy’s voice caught her attention and she turned back to him. "That's my roommate, Aiden. Kind of a d**k," he told her gruffly as Lian’s cheeks flushed a humiliated crimson, glancing down in alarm at Jalila and Habib, who were staring up at Jacobs Timmy, wide-eyed. I cannot believe the nerve of him! That is foul and disgusting… in front of children, no less! she fumed, outraged. She had to set an example for the children she was responsible for. Her eyes flashed angrily for a moment before she quickly regained composure.

”With all due respect, Jacobs Timmy, I not think it proper be such foul in front of children,” she spoke rather sharply, though her voice was as even and level as always, the perfect picture of self-control. ”It not proper speak such way to me, also. It show great dishonour,” she added, doubting very much that he would even care about such a thing. Quan Yin, just when she had started to warm up to the man, he did something utterly disgusting like this!

Whether he had even acknowledged her protest or not, Lian wasn’t sure, because he went on as though she hadn’t said anything. "Come hear us if you want. Nothing like we did at Andesite, promise. 'Scuse me." Lian stared after him in sheer disbelief. That… sounded almost friendly. Almost. Had he just expressed some kind of… care for the fact that her night at Andesite had been a rather terrifying one? And that ‘S’cuse me’ had sounded almost polite. Well, as polite and caring as Lian supposed Jacobs Timmy was ever capable of being. Her mind strayed back to the waterfall and his immediate concern with getting her to the clinic as fast as possible… and then back to his disgusting display of English slang in front of three small children today. Lian pursed her lips, these two conflicting views of the man frustrating her beyond belief. It didn’t make sense! People were either one way or another! Why was he breaking all of her preconceived rules about the human race?! He is so aggravating! she fumed.

With a sigh, Lian looked down at Jalila and Habib, who were looking up at her with confused expressions, obviously not knowing what to make of what just happened. ”I not wish you ever say what you hear Jacobs Timmy say just now. It not good word,” she told them firmly as they both nodded. With a small smile, Lian smoothed down their hair affectionately before gently shifting Hiba in her arms.

“Lian, can we watch them play? They said we could,” Jalila pointed out. Lian glanced up at the stage where the two men were nearly finished setting up, hesitant to expose the children to any more vulgarity tonight. What on earth would Afra say if she saw what just happened? She’d probably never let Lian take the children anywhere again! Still… this was a music festival and she had brought the children here to listen to music. Jacobs Timmy’s promise that tonight’s performance wasn’t going to be anything like the horror film soundtrack that unfolded at Andesite resurfaced in her mind and with a small sigh, she nodded.

”I suppose,” she reluctantly agreed, leading the children closer to the stage so they could see better. Jacobs Timmy, you had better been serious when you made that promise. These children have heard enough vulgarity for one night. {{OOC: OMG I’M SO SORRY THIS TOOK FOREVER TO POST! Timmy muttered to Aiden, holding out a stool that he'd snagged from a neighboring stage. Well. No one was there. No reason for it to just sit there and not get used if Aiden needed it, right? Aiden looked at him for a moment with a frown before he plucked the stool from his hands and placed it firmly on the stage. "...you planning on channeling that attitude of yours into the f**king song?"

Aiden went to poking at the proffered microphone at that, not paying Timmy the slightest bit of attention. "I will pretend I did not hear that, for your sake." He lifted his chin and frowned a bit further, switching the microphone on before he leaned into it and sang a few notes absently. "You never go...you're always- yeah, sounds good." He abruptly cut off the singing when he was satisfied with the level that he heard coming out of the nearby amplifiers. Whatever technicians they had here working the event had certainly done a fine job. The levels were remarkably even, though he supposed the true test would be when Timmy was playing beside him.

"Hey, don't forget I can kick your f**king a**, b*****d," Timmy snapped back at Aiden, though he could feel a bit of the tension slipping away from him even as he quipped. This was normal for the two of them, if not healthy. One could tell something was wrong between the two of them if there was silence. The second that they were talking, even if it was to argue or exchange little comments like this, one never had to worry. Least we get it out, he mused, setting down his guitar case and nudging a chair toward the side of the stool, where he'd be on Aiden's left side when the audience was watching them. Songs like this called for a nice, intimate setting. Pulling out this song was a good idea, he decided. Aiden had a good mind for things like that. As it was, neither of them were in a state to write any new material, especially since they had no true desire to bring the band back together really seriously. Last year and the show at Andesite had been special occasions, but the other guys had their own lives now.

"Of course you could, sweet pea," Aiden returned, glancing at Timmy solely to catch the little glare that he sent him immediately afterward. Aiden smirked. All too easy. "Ready, Timmy?"

"Yeah, just lemme tune first." He flipped out a little tuner and pressed a button, which emitted a midi E. He plucked the highest string on his guitar with his guitar pick and frowned, carefully turning its corresponding tuner at the head until he was satisfied by the note that the string played. He continued this process for all of the strings until he was completely satisfied and then nodded to Aiden. Aiden looked down at the ground for a moment, face rigid in its concentration, before he lifted his hand and carefully snapped out a beat, speaking softly with each snap. "One...two...three...four..." Timmy began plucking the strings, spelling out the chords on the guitar rather quietly as he ducked his head down to watch his work.

Aiden waited for only a measure before he looked up and breathed out the [words] against the microphone, face solemn and serious. "You never go...you're always here." He closed his eyes, drawing in a deep breath through his nose. "Beneath my skin...I cannot run away. Fading slowly..." He tilted his head back a bit, letting the music fill him. "Give it all to you, reaching as I fall...it's already over, already over now."

Timmy parted his lips and vocalized softly, smoothing down the gruffness on his voice intently and never once moving his eyes away from the guitar. This song was positively infectious both to him and Aiden. It was a shame they didn't have Jake here to play the keyboard, giving them strings or piano behind the both of them, but this was so...so intimate that he knew they didn't need anything else to give it strength.

"My best defense...running to you." Aiden shook his head lightly, silky black hair brushing against his pale cheeks as he did so. "I can't resist. Take all you want from me. Breaking...slowly..." His words ended with a soft puff of air against the microphone as he began to sway slightly, one of his hands gently touching the stand in front of him as he leaned in closer, lips brushing against the head. "Give it all to you, reaching as I fall...it's already over now." He paused, feeling a slight pang in his chest. "Loving you again...it's already over, already over now."

Goosebumps shot up Timmy's arms as he shifted chords into the bridge, lifting his eyes to look at Aiden. He was struck not for the first time by the sheer intensity on Aiden's face. He'd closed his eyes again, but pain was inched across the lines of his face. Part of him wanted to reach out and touch his arm, to wake him from what he must be focusing on, but still he played. This was fine. This happened. It was normal. Aiden opened his mouth again, singing more forcefully this time. Timmy watched. "You're what I reach for when I fall! It's already over...you're what I reach for when I fall! It's already over now."

Aiden opened his eyes with a very soft sigh, a brief lull in the guitar pulling him to look toward Timmy. They locked eyes for a moment before Timmy blinked and looked back down at his guitar, beginning to pluck at the strings again. Brothers. We're brothers until the end. It was a solemn thought, but one that felt so true he knew he couldn't deny it. He began to vocalize softly, leaning back from the microphone a bit to let Timmy draw out further. Aiden became the background in that moment, letting Timmy have the chance for spotlight that he'd been denied for many years in their band. He doubted Timmy had ever even noticed. He didn't need that s**t, and Aiden knew that. None of them did, not really. But God, he deserved it once and a while. The two of them played off of each other for nearly two minutes, Timmy plucking at the strings as he felt led and Aiden murmuring out a quiet melody above it, his eyes closing again until he heard Timmy slowly die off.

[/doHTML] |
