The sky was clear and the distant sun shone down on the small island. The storm from last week had done it's damage, even today's brief bit of sunshine wouldn't make a dent in the mounds that were piled all about Obsidian. Yet the clear sky seemed to make the area even colder. Ryan shoved his gloved hands deeper in the pockets of his jacket. Home was a good walk from the school grounds and the boy wasn't really ready to get home just yet. His little sister Paige had gone shopping with their grandmother earlier so he was free to go where he pleased.
Lunch had been over three hours ago and the scent of hot soup wafted from the cafe as he passed. This was here his cousin Amanda worked. Ryan paused in front of the small building. He had some gold on hand and a quick snack sounded too good to pass up. Plus it would delay his trip home. He just knew his mother would want him to help paint or something around the old farmhouse. Even in this blustery weather she was working away at the old farm. So without further hesitation he slipped inside. The warmth of the cafe brought color back into his cheeks and caused him to shiver slightly from the sudden change.
His indigo gaze scanned the cafe. It was the first time he'd been in this place. A small bell had rung when the door had opened alerting the attending waitresses to his arrival. It was only seconds before his tall, blonde cousin appeared. Amanda blinked slightly surprised to see him. Ryan gave her a half hearted smile as she approached.
"Hey there Ryan. Anything wrong?" Why did she assume something was wrong? Though that was just her way he guess. Ryan shook his head and began to remove his gloves.
"Oh no, just wanted something warm to eat before walking all the way home." He explained. Amanda let out a nervous laugh and nodded.
"Oh ok. Well grab a table and let me know what you want. I'll bring it out to you. Though I'm afraid you'll have to eat alone, I'm the only one on duty right now." Ryan nodded. He'd been kind of worried she'd want to sit and chat. Amanda was nice but she was nearly ten years older than him. Ryan really needed friends his own age, but the boy was pretty shy. It was hard making new friends in a new town. Ryan glanced over the menu before ordering a bowl of soup and soda. Amanda nodded then headed back to the kitchen. Ryan leaned back in the chair and watched the passing pedestrians through the front window.

[/dohtml] |

"Robbie, keep up!" Regina shouted to her brother with her sassy smile. She was excited about getting something to eat after not eating all day after all. "Regina! Come on." Robbie whined, pulling his feet out of the snow. As Regina was walking by staring into the window her eyes locked with another boy's. She looked around at the other tables and it was packed. So, why not sit with someone your own age?...Or a bit older, whatever. Walking into the cafe, Regina knew exactly where she was sitting. "Excuse me, can I sit here?" she asked the boy smiling. |
