Autumn 20th, Year 07
5:00 p.m.

"You know Malik, you could have told me about this a week ago. This might take me a day or so." Karim said, her tongue poking out between her lips as she threaded a needle through a torn white robe.

The older boy shrugged, leaning back in his chair so two legs balanced precariously above the ground. He took a sip of his tea, dropping it on a table with a high-pitched clink! as his chair legs hit the floor. "I did not know I was going to the Masquerade until yesterday, what did you expect? Besides, it got you away from... er, what's his name."

Karim frowned, staring across the table at Malik. "You know his name."

"... Ahbal?" he asked, grinning.

"Malik!" she glared at him. "His name is Bryant, and he's a nice guy, I swear."

"Yeah, yeah, I am sure he will be wonderful, until he breaks my precious sister's heart," Malik said, still smiling a little. He cluctched his hand to his chest demonstratively.

Karim blushed. "Go... go get some more tea! I cannot concentrate with you flapping your lips in my ears." She pushed the cup across the table, so it settled before Malik. Pushing his own empty tea cup softly. Malik laughed, ruffling his sister's hair before getting up. "Chai runner," she snickered as he left.

Malik rolled his eyes, but a smile continued to curl his lips. Despite his griping, they got along quite well. As evidenced by their grins. Setting the empty cups on the counter, he tapped it and told the waitress. "Two chai teas, if you please." He leaned on the counter.

"Come on Liv! I'm starving." Spencer said trying to be patient for his daughter. Finally, she walked throught the door. "Sorry dad." she sighed. She then began to look around. The place was really packed. "Sweetheart, can you go and get some coffee for your old man?" he asked ruffling her jet black hair.

She pouted. "Sure. I guess." she said walking towards the counter. She looked at the waiter who seemed to be lost in her dark eyes. "Can I get two cups of coffee?" she asked with a small chuckle, and a disturbed look. The waiter looked away as he snapped out of the trance. "You have the most gorgeous eyes..." he said. Olivia smiled happily at the comment.

"Thank you." she said shyly. As she waited for her coffee she looked towards the guy next to her....he...somehow reminded her of her old brother. It was a bit odd. She was then pushed into him as a big crowd was shoved over. Not wanting to fall, she grabbed his shirt. "Oh, uh....whoops. Sorry about that." she said giggling a bit.

Malik tapped the counter, humming to himself. He wondered if other kids his age'd be going to the masquerade. If not, he had always been okay with hanging out with adults. Still... it would be nice to have at least one person his age. Malik hated the thought of becoming that one kid who grew up too fast, though at this point he thought it might be too late. After all, he was the man of the house. Maybe his time as a kid had come to a close the moment the earthquake had hit Obsidian.

"You have the most gorgeous eyes..."

He glanced over, seeing a younger dark-skinned girl being addressed by a waiter. That was... forward. The girl looked young. A smirk played across his lips. Maybe that was Bryant? Malik stole a glance at his name tag: Keith. Darn. Not that he wanted his sister dating someone like that, he just wanted her to find someone who wouldn't give him a headache. Bryant wore piercings and his jeans were tight. Not good enough.

And he had to look out for Karim, and all his siblings. She was, after all, still fifteen.

All of the sudden a crowd of people surged forward, Malik was too busy focusing on how off the beat he was drumming was. When all of the sudden-- there was someone grabbing onto him. He felt his shirt tear a little on the sleeve. Geez, another thing for his siser to sew, he guessed.

"Oh, uh....whoops. Sorry about that."

Oh, it was that girl with the supposedly pretty eyes. Malik blushed a little. "Oh, it's fine! It's fine, I... er." She had to be new, Malik knew all the other Middle Eastern and Indian people in the neighbourhood. Plus, he hadn't seen her around school. "Just try to be more careful next time, haha!"

He grabbed one of her wrists softly and pushed her up. "The real question is, are you alright?" Malik smiled slightly.

Olivia looked up at the boy who was quite a bit like her...as far as traits such as hair and eye color go. She looked down and noticed a tear in his sleeve. "Oh, I'm sorry. you're sleeve is ripped." she said trying to stand up without being knocked over. "Of course. I guaruntee I won't be-guh!" she started before being knocked over again this time straight onto her knees.

"Geez, watch where you're walking. There is a person standing right here." she said annoyed. She got up and dusted herself off. She continued to wait for someone to get her the coffee. Then another waiter came back with piercings on his eyebrow, and his lip and one on his ear. And her coffee.

"Here you go pretty lady." he said winking. "I must say, I can see why my co-worker's cheeks were so pink. Not every day you see such smokey eyes with soft lips." he said winking. She gave him a disturbed look as er perfectly arched eyebrows gave a bit of an uncomfortable look.

"Uh...can I get a de-caf?" she asked rubbign her neck. The guy took her cup. "Sure thing angelface." he said walking back. "Some of these waiters here are...totally shameless....it's horriffic." she said with a nervous white smile.

Malik shrugged when she commented on his ripped sleeve.

"Hm? Yeah, but my sister has a--" he glanced over and saw no girl. Oh, she was on the floor. Did she have Meniere's or something? She fell down more than Habib had when Malik was teaching him how to walk. Malik grabbed her arm, hoisting her up. He smiled nervously at the waiter... what type of come on was that? Malik was no Cassanov himself, but even he had smoother lines than that.

Mind, he wouldn't waste them on a fifteen-year-old.

Malik laughed and scratched his nose. "It's kind of strange... you're a little young for them." A waitress delivered him his ea, nodding to Malik.

"Your chai, Malik..."

Ahhhh, nice. "Thank you!" he said, smiling brightly at the waitress and taking the tray. "Chai... my favourite."

He looked to the girl. "You are new here, correct? I am Malik Bousa'id." Malik nodded t oher, hands too full of chair to shake hands.

Olivia looked away as she gave a nervous laugh. "It's strange too. You'd think pedophilia(OOC:Is that the right word) would be extremely looked down on in this town." she said with her hands on her hips. Just as she said that, piercings boy came back. With a flirty wink he handed Olivia the coffee.

He then looked her up and down as she got her money out. "Hey, new girl, can I see your tanlines?" he said with a creepy smirk. Olivia took that as an offense and grabbed the cups after handing him the money. "Thanks but...I need to go sit down." she said. "This seat's not taken." he said with a tiny smirk.

She gave him a disgusted look as she looked to Malik, now ignoring mister pedophile. "Anyway, it's a little packed. Do you mind if my dad and I sit with you?" she asked with her white smile before adding in her name. "I'm Olivia by the way. I'm pretty new here, yeah, but i'm just glad I know someone now." she said cheerfully.

{{OOC;; tears, I would appreciate it if you just looked up a word before posting rather than disrupting it with an OOC, please. It breaks the flow of the post. ^^}}

"It's strange too. You'd think pedophilia would be extremely looked down on in this town."

Malik blinked. Wasn't paedophilia looked down upon... everywhere? He'd never met someone who was like, 'Woohoo! I love paedophiles! And children!' that would probably get them some strange looks. Maybe jailtime. He chose instead to nod politely and leave a tip for the waitress who had been kind enough not to flirt with him. Or if she had she did it subtly, not like the waiters, apparently.

Tanlines. She was Indian, or Middle Eastern. They didn't really have tanlines, being brown all year long. To be honest, Malik was kind of glad they were hitting on the girl and not his sister. Though it might only be a matter of time. Malik shook his head. "Let's go." He glanced at the pierced waiter, giving him a shakey smile. "My sister and I are sitting over there." He indicated to the slim Indian youth sitting at a booth, stictching still.

Karim frowned at him as he approached, then looked over at Olivia. Her smile widened, and she waved. Once in earshot, she said, "Marhaba! Tasharrafna!" Where'd her brother catch another Indian. Ahhh, this was good. Someone else she could bond with... maybe?

Olivia smiled at the girl. though unsdudre of what she said she nonetheless greeted her. "Um....Hi to you too. Sorry, I can kind of only speak english." she said trying to find a way to be nice. "Dad! I got us a spot!" she shouted to her father, sitting down next to the girl stitching away. "You sew? That's so cool. My dad is a bit helpless when it comes to sewing so I did it all." she said with a smile.

Spencer walked over and eyed Malik. "Liv, you didn't go off and get a boyfriend just because your old man wasn't watching did you?" he asked with a smirk. Oliva rolled her eyes and handed her dad his coffee. "Dad...I JUST met him like, 5 minutes ago." she said blushing.

Karim faltered a little when Olivia replied in English. There went her dreams of speaking Arabic, or even Hindu, with someone not in her immediate family. "Oh, you don't speak any other language? My mistake, I am Karim Bousa'id." She frowned slightly, and went back to sewing.

Malik shrugged. Yes, he had been looking forward to having another regular customer to the restaurant, but seeing the father he figured she was adopted. Or something to that effect. "She's my sister," he explained. "My baby sister." A subtle glare from the younger Bousa'id, one that Malik returned with a friendly grin. Ahh, how he loved ribbing his sister. And how she loved ribbing him. Neither of them minded, really, out of all his siblings Malik was probably closest with Karim.

Upon hearing Olivia's comment on sewing, Karim nodded. "Yeah, all the women in my family can sew." Karim loved making clothes, which was probably why she agreed to helping with Malik's costume.

"Liv, you didn't go off and get a boyfriend just because your old man wasn't watching did you?"

Malik tilted his head to one side. Whaaaaaaat. Who said stuff like that? He blushed a little, not enough to notice unless you were looking closer than you ought to. "I... I am not her boyfriend, sir."

Karim set down her needle and looked up at the older man. "It is a bit presumptuous of you to think things like that," she said, a little bluntly.

"Karim..." muttered Malik. Not rude exactly, but well... his sister had always been less concerned about stepping on others toes.

Olivia rubbed her neck. "I used to speak it but I totally forgot now." she admitted fooling with a strand of hair. Olivia looked at Malik and chuckled a bit. "Nothing wrong with being a baby sister." she said, referring to her used to be older brother. She began to wonder how he was doing. Was he ok? Did mom give him up to? Was he still with Amy?

She blushed as her dad laughed. "Relax relax I'm kidding. I know my little girl is only interested in guys older than her, meaning I have more to worry about." he joked patting her shoulder only making her embarrassment worse. She looked at Malik, made a finger gun, pointed it to her head and pretended to pull a trigger, mouthing 'Kill me now'.

She used to speak it but forgot?

That struck Malik as strange, and Karim, too. He could tell. Maybe it was because their language was such a close part of who they were. As Malik and Karim. As Bousa'ids. Hard to imagine not speaking Arabic, or even Hindu. Still, neither sibling raised a fuss. Karim only nodded slowly and said, "Perhaps you will pick it up again someday."

Second languages were always handy.

Karim frowned. What a strange father this girl had. "My brother is older..." she noted, stitching together to ripped seams.

Malik nodded. "Seventeen..." he added. Graduating next spring, he had to start applying for colleges, but-- Malik glanced over at Karim.Malik had more important things to take care of. His future could wait a year or two. Who knows, maybe he wouldn't go to college. Malik wasn't even sure what the world held for him, honestly.

He could only smile weakly at Olivia's display. A bit too uncomfortable to really laugh. That, and he found it hard to laugh at father's expenses nowadays.

"Maybe we will be in the same class," Karim said. "Do you have any other siblings?"

Olivia smiled and nodded. "Wish I had an older brother sometime. But being an only child has some advantages. Though siblings would be cool." she said with a small smile. The girl was determinded to show she wasn't gonna go after the older boy.She figured she'd go ad find another topic but that didn't mean her father would agree.

"Ah, 17 huh? Close to being able to drink-"he said before Olivia knocked over her cup of coffee, making it look like an accident. She'd do anything to get away from there. "Oh, I'm so sorry dad. Hang on I'll go and get some napkins." Olivia said sweetly before going to get some napkins, hiding her blushing cheeks.

Karim grinned and nodded. “Having an older brother is great, like having a personal slave.” She cast Malik a sidelong glance and raised her eyebrows.

Malik returned her smile, it was true. Chivalry and him being the man of the house, not to mention the being the eldest sibling, made him essentially a slave. He made their lunches, sent them to bed, walked them to school. He was a slave, albeit a willing one. Malik couldn’t have asked for better shackles binding his feet than his family. “I have five younger siblings,” he said, teacup clasped between two hands, “feel free to have one of them.”

The sibling’s smiles vanished when the father uttered some crack about drinking. Karim resisted the urge to roll her eyes, and concentrated on her sewing. Malik merely looked into his lap. This man... he was in some ways like a child! And not a cute one like Habib, rather one who pestered him constantly. It was awful to think, though, so Malik pushed it to the back of his mind.

He cleared his throat. “Yeah, well... I’m afraid that’s not the case,” Malik said, glancing at Olivia as she left. “I don’t drink, it’s against my religion.”

With a sip of his tea, Malik realised that might’ve been confusing. “I’m Muslim, you see.”

Spencer nodded attempting to listen to the kid. He then mentioned religion. Was he kidding? Religion had always been a burden to Spencer. He thought it was a waste of time. He was glad Olivia didn't seem to mind not being muslim. Though....the no drinking thing might help with not getting her drunk and knocked up. He didn't need a grandkid at 30.

Olivia heard Malik mention he and his sister were muslim, and smiled happily as she got some napkins. She never got to know much about her religion. She knew she was originally supposed to be engaged to another muslim boy, but...that changed when she was given up. Maybe if she at least had a muslim BOYFRIEND her parents might take her back.

That thought however quickly left her head. She liked older guys and all but....who'd want to date a boring girl like her 2 years younger than him? Instead, she went back with napkins hoping there was no awkward tension in the air. "Sorry...I'm a bit clumsy." she said wiping away the coffee. Spencer, deciding to show he was a good dad, got some napkins and helped her clean.

"I'm gonna go use the restroom real quick Liv. You guys talk for awhile." he said with a smile and heading off. Sighing, Olivia sat back down by Karim and Malik. "So you're muslim huh? That's really cool." she said smiling. "Can you tell me a bit about muslim heritage? My original family was muslim but..I never got to learn about it." she added.

It was probably lucky for Spencer that he hadn't voiced that religion thought. Otherwise he would have had two angry Bousa'ids glaring at him. As it was, Karim had gone back to her sewing and Malik took another swig of his tea. It wasn't like it mattered, they were used to being around non-Muslims, people of all denominations. Variety is the spice of life, as they say.

Frankly, the no-drinking thing was an old tradition long since lost in popularity, but Malik decided to embrace it anyway. He had no time to get drunk, and then the hangover...? Not fun. Too much time wasted in his opinion.

Malik grinned and waved his hand a little, as if shooing her apology away. "No worries, we all do things like that sometimes." He laughed a little, then said, "I myself used to be clumsy but after working in a kitchen for a few years... you get used to it.

"Bye..." Karim muttered into the shirt she was sewing, glancing up as the older man left. He was quite strange looking. That beard didn't do him any favours.

"So you're muslim huh? That's really cool."

Malik nodded enthusiastically. "We're Muslim, all right." He paused. "What don't you know? Or what do you want to know...?"
