She gasped as some one had grabbed her shoulder. She turned to see a man in a mask. She gasped and backed up a bit. But she managed to keep calm at the odd man. Everyone was dressed oddly tonight. She smiled through the laced mask as she examiend the man. "Well, some people certainly did go all out with their costumes didn't they?" she asked with a tiny laugh.

"Yeh, half of'vem look retarded." He spoke harshly. But the girl's smile was infectious, and caused him to smile back too, under ridiculous gas mask he was wearing. He made an annoyed sound as he wiped his fog covered glasses clean with his thumbs.
"Ahem, excuse me Miss. Have you lost your partner?" He asked, no one could tell if he was still smiling or not. "Because, I've lost mine."

He smiled at the woman’s response. “Mayhaps...” he echoed. “I should hope they do not look to me, for I am merely a pauper in the robes of a king.” It was fun, talking like this, he thought. Maybe he could do it more often. It was like he was pulled into a Shakespeare play. He looked over to the woman, only to find her being assailed by a man wearing a bird mask. Its beak was long, like the ones you saw in the windows of Venice. He wondered if he should leave them be, after all, he had people to find. Let bird-boy have a go. As nice as the woman was, she wasn’t the one he had hoped to find. If her hair didn’t give it away, then the southern drawl did.

But first, Charlemagne had to fix something. “Here,” he reached forward as the lady was getting a drink. “You’re going to put someone’s eye out, moving around like a drunkard.” The king hoped that would help, but made no promises. He was Charlemagne, but not a miracle worker.

With a small smile and a glance over at Moondrop, he said, “With a lovely young lady to guide you, I’m sure you’ll be fine.”

The dress wasn't fancy, it was a bit used. A friend had let her borrow it, the fit wasn't terribly off but it was long. In fears of toppling over, since it clearly went over her toes. A simple pin was used to lifted it up giving it a bit more style and volume.

The mask was a different story, though the dress was rather bland. The unique texture was meant to appear almost rusty, but it held a sweet flavour of beauty.

The story behind it was interesting, she didn't own it and after tonight she'd have to return it. Much like her dress. Though, she had the money to buy one of these masks. But the man selling them, sold out. If she had been just a few days earlier then maybe she could have got her hands on one. But luckily the man took pity on her and offered her this mask.

The place was decorated accordingly. And did it ever stand out, with people surrounding each corner, she felt her cheeks flush beneath her thin veneer of cover. Taking in a breath she walked forward, eyes dancing among the many bodies in this room. Strangely it wasn't as difficult as expected, to not turn around and leave. She wandered toward the drink stand, getting herself a drink. She could see the Mayor, he was hard not to miss. Always dressed in his interesting bright red hat and clothes. She took her drink and leaned against a wall, watching the other people. Closing her eyes she let her drink rest against her chest. It was so relaxing here even with all of these people. She promised that she'd enjoy herself and build up enough courage to at least have one dance.

"You have a very nice outfit."

Zorro grinned up at the lady, tipping his hat to her. "Why, thank you, fair maiden. You are looking lovely yourself, this evening." He said, adding in another small bow. When he straightened up, though, he was noticing something that proved to be very unsettling for the ever height conscious Zorro-costumed man.

This woman was over a foot taller than him. And he wasn't particularly fond of this. So he decided to go ahead and excuse himself. "Ah, but pardon me miss, for taking up your time..." Going into another small bow, he now began to back away from the Sapphire lady. Turning then, he again straightened up again and continued to walk away. Heading to, somewhere, he just wasn't exactly sure yet. So he continued wandering about the room, head held high, as if he knew just what he was doing, and where he was going.

With his role as matchmaker over and done with, the king of the Franks thought he would look for company elsewhere. Preferably with someone who had a familiar face. Or maybe a familiar back of the head, considering the situation. He touched his own head, bumping the crown out of position. Only to straighten it again. Couldn't have himself looking skewed, now could he?

Moving from the clumsy bird-beak and Miss Moondrop, he saw a little man (or maybe a child?) leaving another woman's side. The dress was an ensemble that he thought maybe, just maybe, would match someone he knew. And the hair matched, there was only one way to tell. He dusted off his kingly robes and made his way over as casually as possible.

What to say. He could go the casual route, hardly fitting of the night, or of his royal persona.

"I see the theif abandoned the lady to herself, I pray her wallet is still safe," he said. His identity was not so well-preserved that she might recognise him yet, but he had resigned not to speak her name, even if he knew it. It would break the magic of the night. Charles the Great smiled beneath his mask, and bowed, slightly, so as not to upset the crown upon his head. "King Charlemagne, a pleasure to meet the lady, er..."

What name had she adopted for such an event? He couldn't help but grin, it was like meeting anew.

Gliding into the masquerade, her hides, shaded by her mask, drifted over the room; there were quite a few people here. None that she recognized, though she really only cared about one particular person. A man to be exact. For several minutes she slowly made her way along the outside of the dancing, careful that her hood remained up, hiding her hair underneath. She thought she had done a fairly good job of dressing up, considering she never did. Though from watching her gracefully walk about the ball, one would never guess.

Lightly touching the galloping horse pendant on her bosom, she paused in her step. He has to be here somewhere... Then her eyes rested on a man leaning against the wall by the entrance;; she knew that stance anywhere. She had completely missed him when she came in! Her lips curved into a small smile as she made her way towards him nonchalantly. Sneaky, sneaky man...

As she got closer she lightly fanned herself with her fan, glancing around, pretending to take in the room though all she could think of was the caped man before her, "The mayor doesn't hold anything back, does he?"

His gaze was pretty much glued to the floor, as more and more people were entering, his uneasiness was growing. He thought about just ducking outside for a while, but...then he might miss her. And he couldn't stand the thought of someone else approaching her, so he stayed right where he was. With the probable intention of catching her as she came in, which was a hard thing considering that he was currently looking at the floor.

Adjusting the rose he had somehow managed to pin to his black shirt, he paused as he suddenly noticed a black lacy sort of looking-thing come into his field of vision. Blinking, he dropped his hand and looked up, and found a woman in a dark red and black dress. With a red veil. He simply stood there, leaning against the wall, looking at her. "The mayor doesn't hold anything back, does he?" He heard her ask, and he waited just a moment, before a smile broke out onto his face.

His eye caught on something on her person, a horse pendant. His gaze flickered upwards, then, and looking into her eyes...he was certain is was her. Plus, he'd know the shape of those lips anywhere... Lightly clearing his throat, he pushed himself away from the wall, standing up straight now.

"He certainly didn't this time," He said, keeping his voice lower than normal in efforts of trying to make his accent a little less noticeable. Not a problem now, though, considering the only person he wanted to interact with, he was certain was standing in front of him. Perhaps to try and throw her off? Yes, that might have been why... He watched her, as she was fanning herself, looking around the room.

"Has the Lady been to other festivals here on our humble little island, I must ask, that can compare to this evening's?" He asked, his grin nearly slipping as he wondered just what the heck he had just said. ... He was attempting, perhaps, to continue in his efforts of throwing her off, by attempting to talk more refined-like. And not doing too good a job of it.

She walked slowly into the room, feeling uncomfortable in what she considered to be such a beautiful dress. She was also worried about what she had left back home, but she had been assured that all would be fine. Plus someone had gone to the extent of helping her pick out this dress, so. With a small sigh, she had reluctantly agreed to go.

Looking up, she touched a hand lightly to her silver mask, that ran from along her cheek bones to about half-way towards her hairline. Not that she knew many people to begin with, but there was a measure of peace, to be hidden from everyone. Though, everyone hidden from you...well, she supposed it was a fair trade. Today, she was posing as a Pink Dolphin. They were quite rare, and beautiful creatures, after all...

A deep breath, slowly exhaling...she held up her head, hair done up in a fancy pony tail, she carefully made her way towards the table with drinks.

Slowly fanning herself, she faced the man in all black, smiling automatically upon seeing his smile. It was definitely him! "He certainly didn't this time," However when he spoke his voice was...different. His usual accent wasn't there and it was deeper. Pausing in her fanning, she watched him, waiting for him to say something else. "...indeed," she muttered, examining him again; though she knew it was him, she just had to check.

"Has the Lady been to other festivals here on our humble little island, I must ask, that can compare to this evening's?" Now this was ridiculous, what was he talking about? This doesn't sound like him at all! Having expected a very different voice to come out, it took her a few moments to answer slowly. "...I can't say that I have." Eyes narrowing some, she looked him over again; expect for his voice, it was him. Had to be! Then her eyes rested on the small rose upon his shirt. I knew it.

Instantly a confident smile spread across her face, as she looked back up into his eyes. "Tell me, good sir, would you honor me with a dance? I have very much desired to do so since I arrived, but have yet to find a suitable partner. However, you seem to fit what I want to a tee," holding out her hand to him, she gave him a sultry smile, "if you aren't averse to it of course."

Sapphire had smiled and nodded, thanking the shorter man as he complimented her appearance as well. She watched curiously as he bowed to her and looking back up at her, seemed to realize something and left with a few departing words. She didn't mind. There was someone else she'd wanted to find, anyway.

Even as the shorter man left, another approached her and her smile brightened considerably at the sound of his voice.

"I see the theif abandoned the lady to herself, I pray her wallet is still safe,"

A light chuckle. Her eyes, if they weren't a dead giveaway to her identity, took in his appearance. He'd dressed up as a king, hm? And he even had a crown to top it off. Very regal. "It is quite safe, my dear sir." she replied, amusement clear in her voice. And a light giddiness. She'd found who she had been looking for. She was quite positive of it.

Her smile widened when he smiled and introduced himself as King Charlemagne. So that was his disguise? She chuckled again as she watched him bow slightly. The crown, she imagined, could only be so stable. "Sapphire. I am Lady Sapphire." she 'introduced' herself. It seemed fitting with her outfit.

"And are you enjoying the evening so far, Your Majesty?" Of course she had to throw that in there. He'd adopted a name with the title of 'King'... so how could she not?

His grin widened, looking down at his Lady as she paused. Yes, the change in voice was working, or at least, somewhat! He could see the confusion on her face, and could barely keep his grin in relative check. Oh, he had a feeling that this night would be fun. He smiled, listening to her and watching her as she replied, as her face changed when she realized something.

"Tell me, good sir, would you honor me with a dance? I have very much desired to do so since I arrived, but have yet to find a suitable partner. However, you seem to fit what I want to a tee, if you aren't averse to it of course." He stared at her hand a moment, smile gone, as if contemplating something. But then, he grinned again and nodded, taking her hand in his.

"Mustn't let down a lovely Lady such as yourself, then, how can I say no? ..." Here he paused for a grin, but suddenly scrunched up his nose and said, in his normal voice, "Averse?" As if he didn't know what it meant. Quickly catching himself, he slipped back into, 'character.' "Uh, well now...I do have a, special little lady, but." He turned a knowing grin onto Rose, as he started to slowly walk them towards the dancing area. "...I don't think she'd mind my dancin' with you, just this once." He said, the ending note as if saying, 'keep this a secret.'

"It is quite safe, my dear sir."

Ah, no public execution tonight then. Then again, the night was young. He wouldn't have the executioner put away the guillotine just yet. When she turned to look at him, his eyes flickered to hers. The King of the Franks couldn't help but smile to himself. Eyes the colour of amber, there was almost no mistaking them. He wanted to say something about them, but it would be a dead giveaway. Though he was sure he knew who she was and she knew who he was, there was an illusion created by the atmosphere of the night.

One that he wouldn't sacrifice, not even for those eyes.

Sapphire. Fitting, it matched her dress accordingly. He wasn't a mirror image of King Charlemagne, but didn't feel up to growing a beard for the occasion. It woud hide his chin, and he was quite attached to his chin. "Lovely to make your acquaintance," he said, taking her hand and kissing her knuckles softly. Something he had done in his younger days, often with classier ladies. He figured he would brush it off and use it again today.

At her question, he frowned slightly and looked at the dance floor. A few couples danced, but no real movement. He could respond with a corny line, but thought better of it. Charlemagne did not spot pick-up lines, and if he did they were classy. "Very much so," he said, his gaze falling back on the Lady Sapphire. "Though it appears the other nobles need a lesson in how to dance."

It was exciting. Pretending not to know who you were talking to when you did. Although she did idly wish her eyes weren't so obvious. After all, if he didn't know her.. perhaps she would be more.... Sapphire blinked, surprised at herself that the word had almost popped up. What was she thinking, exactly? In any case, she was just happy that he was here. At least she wouldn't be alone tonight.

"Lovely to make your acquaintance,"

Sapphire chuckled softly and blushed lightly as he kissed her knuckles. She'd always thought of him as a gentleman, but he was more so that night. It must've been the atmosphere. After all, it was almost like they were taking a step back into time. At least, for them. Some other people were dressed more contemporary style.

She watched as her companion frowned at her question. So what was he not enjoying the night? He had seemed happy enough when he'd approached her. Her gaze followed his as it went to the dance floor. Barely any couples were dancing. The night was still young, however. Then he replied with a positive and she wondered, then, why he had frowned.

"Though it appears the other nobles need a lesson in how to dance."

His gaze had returned to her and she looked back at him, her smile slowly turning into a knowing grin. "Shall we perhaps show them?" she asked, eyes going from Charlemagne to the dance floor and then holding out her hand. Did women usually offer to dance with the man? Well... he kind of initiated it, so it wasn't odd, right?

"Shall we perhaps show them?"

He smiled. Would it be wrong to admit he liked it when women took charge once in a while? It took the burden off of him. And being King of Old France was enough of a burden for one man. Viking invaders, Arab invaders, German invaders. For once, it was nice that Lady Sapphire took the reigns, a least to an extent. Sure, he had hinted at it, baited her, and she took it. And he couldn't be more glad.

"We shall," he said. Taking her hand, he led her out onto the dance floor. As far as he was concerned, it was just the two of them out there. The rest of the world didn't really matter. "I trust the lady can dance?" asked Charlemagne, drawing her close to him.

He was in pracice, at least, the king had always been a good dancer. Part of being blue blood, he supposed. He rested one hand on her waist, the other held out a distance from their bodies. "If not, I'm here to show you."

Walking in was easy, a simple suite, a simple mask, all hair hidden away beneath a hooded cape, gloves, cane. This was one heck of a place, it was huge. He smiled passively and made his way first to the drinks. Anything alcoholic? he hoped so.

No luck. He pursed his lips and looked about with a bored stare. So many women, so many extravagantly dressed women. a few who weren't exactly appropriate for the scene but that tended to happen, people who didn't seem to get the concept.

Given his short stature it could be divulged that he were a younger gentleman. A gentleman none-the less, he knew how to hold himself, picturesque in a way.....
