<br><br>

<br><br>
Autumn 12th, Year 07<br><br>

After quite enjoying her ride a few days ago on her horse Eclipse, Kayla had decided to saddle up and go for another ride with the horse today. They had simply wandered around the island for a while, and had somehow ended up here, in a garden-like area full of flowers... Thinking this to be a pretty good place for a little rest, Kayla dismounted and stood still for a moment, stretching her legs.
<br><br>
Little did she know, they had picked up a follower along the way. A rather short one, that was attempting to keep to the limited shadows as he followed the horse and rider. Any time the small man saw a horse, he was instantly intrigued. He had seen others on horses before, maybe one or two, but they had usually been going too fast for him to keep up. This woman, however, was going along at a much slower pace. This time, he was able to keep up. He followed them all the way to the little gardens area, and watched as the woman hopped off to stretch her legs.
<br><br>
Not wasting any time, Zedekiah made his move. Crouching low, though was not perhaps necessary considering his height, he sped across the small clearing and, with a jump, launched himself into the air and caught onto the horse's saddle, heaving himself up in the saddle. At the noise, Kayla turned her head to see quite a short-little man up on top of Eclipse! With a startled gasp, she took a step back as he pulled on the horse's reins, telling her to get going. He had a little trouble, as the stirrups were much too low for him. His feet didn't hardly reach!
<br><br>
"Hey!" Kayla yelped, as she jumped out of the way. "Horse thief!! Stop, you mean little cowboy!" She continued yelling, trying to run after them. She knew not all cowboys were bad, but she sure has had her fights and disagreements with quite a few...mainly her brother, but those had always seemed to be resolved. This one, though...what was she supposed to do, if this guy actually got away with her horse? Suddenly, Eclipse stopped, and the man looked back.
<br><br>
"I am NOT little!" He growled. This caused Kayla to stop and raise her brow. That's...what he was concerned about?

Admittedly, taking a nap on the ground probably wasn't the best of ideas. Eric hadn't thought of the possibility of someone stepping on her head by accident as it was kind of hard to see her with all of the flowers surrounding her. A horse almost stomping on her was also something that she hadn't thought about happening. She stared dazedly at the horse's hoofs that were a few inches away from her face. She blinked her large brown eyes slowly, before grudgingly deciding that it would be in her best interest to get up and make her presence known before whoever was riding the horse commanded it to move. Having her face trampled wasn't exactly her definition of a good time. Her upper body shot up, as she rubbed at her eyes.

"He's right you know." She said with a yawn, stretching her arms off to the side and arching her back. She had heard some of the two peoples conversation, and now felt inclined to make her own comment. "Just look at him..." She lazily turned her head to the man on top of the horse. He was a bit shorter than she had expected him to be, but she choose not to linger on that. "Right now he's bigger than both of us." She stated with a smile. Sure he was only taller because he was on the horse, but the point was that he was at the moment closer to the sky than her or the other woman.

"And," Eric started in her boyish voice as she stood from her seated position on the ground; absently dusting her pants off. "Though stealing is a crime, a cowboy without a horse is also a crime. Therefore his crime of stealing is pardoned as it is the lesser of the two." She said wiggling her index finger back and forth, with a smile that seemed far too innocent for its own good. Now there were two reasons that she was on the cowboy guys side, 1) he was a cowboy for goodness sakes! And everyone knows that cowboys are awesomely manly. And 2) the other person was a woman. Therefore, being female, she obviously had to be the one in the wrong. Eric was not prejudiced. Nope not in the least. She was just... Aware of the fact that men were more honest and trustworthy than women, that's all.

It was a toss up as to who was more startled at the sudden appearance of a body sitting up in their immediate grassy surroundings; be it Kayla with her sudden wide-eyed expression and back-peddling steps, or Zedekiah with his jumping a good few inches, in the saddle. Either way, it was undoubtedly a comical sight to see, all around. Kayla stood there with a wild expression and hand over her heart as she tried to calm down and catch what this new person was saying at the same time. Something about...defending the cowboy mini thief? What, really?!
<br><br>
"Hey, thanks man!" Zedekiah said with a big grin, waving a hand in the air toward the little fella. Finally, someone that agreed with ol' Zedekiah!
<br><br>
"Though stealing is a crime, a cowboy without a horse is also a crime. Therefore his crime of stealing is pardoned as it is the lesser of the two."
<br><br>
"True..." Kayla said, taking a step forward and crossing her arms over her chest. "It is, however, still a crime. Now, if you will please return the horse to me, Cowboy-thief-man..." She said again, taking another step towards him and extending her hand. Zedekiah's face scrunched up, he obviously didn't want to hand over the horse to its rightful owner.
<br><br>
"Why do you want to steal her, anyway?" Kayla asked, hands now on her hips. Zedekiah blinked and looked down, a frown forming on his face. ... He, wasn't entirely sure...
<br><br>
"Like the boy said... Plus I jist, wanna go for a ride..." Zedekiah said, in a very meek and almost shy tone. Kayla actually let out a light chuckle, folding her arms once more.
<br><br>
"Then you should have asked," Kayla pointed out, shaking her head. "If you promise to return her...I suppose I can let you ride her for a little bit. But I ask you keep it within my eyesight range. Because, if you do actually steal her, I vow to hunt you down to the ends of this green earth, and skin you alive once I find you. ... But you are welcome to ride her and the other horses at Muddy Water, just, ask." Kayla said, starting out more monotone, then getting scary...then all too cheerily happy at the end there. Zedekiah just stared at her, unsure if she was joking with him or, did she really mean it? ...

Hearing the guy on the horse thank her, she gave him a thumbs up. Her smile considerably brighter. She liked feeling helpful, and plus he had called her a man. There was no better compliment then that. Though she knew deep down that she wasn't a man. She was still just a boy. But, one day she would grow up to be just like her uncle; strong, masculine, and tall. Then she would be truly deserving of the title. Just thinking about it made her heart race with excitement!

The self-proclaimed boy shook her head, now wasn't the time to be getting lost in her fantasies. Her eyes swapped from the cowboy to the dark haired woman as they conversed. Well, actually, maybe it was the time. She wasn't keen on watching the adults go about their flirting. Now, Eric wasn't quite sure what exactly flirting was, but her uncle had told her that women do it a lot. Apparently it had something to do with trying to get on a guys good side, or something like that. And though it didn't really look like the dark haired lady was attempting to do that, Eric knew better. She was just using some weird tactic. Like reverse psychology. The question was, did the cowboy realize this, or was the poor guy being sucked into the woman's diabolical plot? If so that would be really sad, it was Eric's first time seeing a cowboy and she didn't want her high opinion of them to lower any.

"That's right!" Eric exclaimed clapping her hands together. How could she have forgotten, this was a grand opportunity! She dug through the front pouch on her blue hoodie, taking out a pen, then she started hurriedly searching her jean's pockets. She made a noise of triumph as she found a folded piece of paper. She needed something to commemorate this wondrous occasion. After all it's not ever day you get to see such rugged manliness, and- Oh, gum. Eric pried the sticky goop off of the paper as she unfolded it, glancing from the man to the woman before she threw it into her mouth and started chewing. Her face scrunched together for a brief moment. It tasted old, and the texture was a bit off.

Striding over to the side of the horse, Eric lifted her pen and paper up towards the shorter than normal guy. "Could I get an autograph? I've always been a fan of cowboys, and it's my first time to see one in real life!" She said, her eyes practically glowing with admiration.

<br><br>

Fortunately for the girl, or not so much depending on how one viewed it, the not-tall cowboy did not notice the previously chewed gum that the youngster put into her mouth, nor did his glasses-wearing female companion. ... Er, perhaps companion was too strong a word, more like female enemy. Or used-to-be-enemy, but naturally, he was still weary of her.
<br><br>
"Could I get an autograph? I've always been a fan of cowboys, and it's my first time to see one in real life!"
<br><br>
The boy girl's question had knocked Zedekiah out of his dazed thoughts and he shook his head, looking down at the lad lass. Autograph...? Huh-oh! Blinking, and then smiling widely, he grinned down at the youth. Nodding his head, he leaned over to accept the paper and pen from the young'in.
<br><br>
"Oh, well 'course I will, if you want it." Zed glanced over at the child, noticing the paper to be strangely sticky as he tried to write upon it. His writing had never been very good, and he wondered just why this kid wanted his ol' John Hancock, anyway... Giving a small shrug, he set the paper upon his thigh, and scribbled out his name. 'Zedekiah Smith - Long Live Cowboys!'
<br><br>
"Here ya are," Zed said, handing the scrap of paper and pen back to the child. He also believed the kid would enjoy the extra part he added on, and if not, well hey, he probably wouldn't be running across him again...so why not try? Kayla stood back, watching silently, arms crossed. She had a neutral expression upon her face, as she watched. Waiting. No harm done, so far..

"Yes!" Erica said triumphantly, pumping her fist into the air. She couldn't wait to see the look on her uncle's face when she showed him the signed piece of paper. In her excited state, that had been rather delayed due to just waking up, she rocked back and forth from the balls of her feet to her tippy toes. Grinning all the while. Said grin widened when the cowboy finished signing his name and gave the paper back to her. She brought the autograph up to her face, her eyes hurriedly read over what he had written. So his name was Zedekiah Smith... How appropriate! It differently sounded like a good old western name. She let out a hum of approval, happily nodding her head, before she read the short comment that he had written: 'Long Live Cowboys!' it said in not so grand penmanship. Eric's eyes to sparkled with glee, she hugged the somewhat sticky paper to her chest.

"Thanks Mr. Smith, sir!" She said, lifting a hand up to her forehead in a mock salute. One day when this Zedekiah man was famous, as he was sure to be since all great cowboys eventually are, she would thoroughly enjoy showing off the signed piece of paper and gloating to her hearts content. And should she ever happen to need money she could sell it for millions. "Heh." She gave a small chuckle as she bowed her head and put the paper and pen back to where they had been before she pulled them out. Her brilliant plan had been a total and complete success, which was unusual, but certainly not unwelcome.

Her overjoyed expression fell in an instance, her eyes narrowing slightly as she glanced to the dark haired woman. Quickly forcing a smile to her face, she motioned with her hand for Zedekiah to bring his head closer so that she could impart wisdom to him without anyone else hearing. "I know it probably doesn't seem like it, since she's using some weird reverse tactic, but that lady over there-" she jabbed a thumb in the glasses wearing woman's direction. "definitely has her eyes on you." She whispered gravely, looking and sounding like she thought the lady was out to kill him.

"Thanks Mr. Smith, sir!" To this, Zed smiled down at the child, and touched two fingers to the brim of his hat, in a sort of tipping-his-hat type of action. "Mr. Smith was my father," I think, "S', please call me Zed. An' what's your name?" Zedekiah told the child, dropping his hand so that both were on the reins now. Then quickly added in the question about the youngin's name.
<br><br>
When the child had motioned for Zed to come closer, Zed looked to the right, then the left, and leaned over as far as possible, as far as he could without falling out of the saddle. "I know it probably doesn't seem like it, since she's using some weird reverse tactic, but that lady over there...definitely has her eyes on you." Zed looked over at the glasses wearing woman, and seemed to be giving it some thought. Kayla straightened up as they seemed to be talking about her in some fashion, and inclined her head, raising an eyebrow. Zed smirked a little, coughed, and then looked upon the child with a more serious expression.
<br><br>
"Ya think?" He asked, sounding a little uncertain as he glanced over at Kayla once more. Looking at Eric, he asked, "Well, with a lil' strategist such as yerself...what'cha reckon we should do about it?" Apparently, he was in a good enough mood to play along with the lad lass.

"Alrighty then, pleased to meet you mister Sm-" She stopped, giving an embarrassed laugh as she rubbed the back of her neck. "Zed." She amended. It was a little awkward to call an adult by a nickname, not that she minded. "My name's Eric Baker. You can call me muscle boy if you really want to," She lifted an arm, pulling back the long sleeve of her hoody and flexing, showing off her muscles. Or lack thereof. Though she certainly did have some, they were not that noticeable. "But I'm also fine with just Eric." She said, lowering her arm and giving a smile.

"Hm-mm. No doubt about it. I mean, if she didn't like you then she wouldn't have forgiven you so readily for trying to make off with her horse. Normally I think she'd have asked for at least some compensation or something. Don't you think?" She shook her fist, and wagged her finger as she talked, seeming unable to keep her hands from moving while she spoke. Hand motions were important for adding emphasis after all. The honey haired boy wannabe suddenly let out a sigh, looking up at Zedekiah with an expression of sympathy. "You've got to deal with this kinda stuff a lot, what with women being so into the rugged outdoorsy look and all." She felt bad for the poor cowboy, having to deal with women vying for his attention so (supposedly) often. Her uncle also had this problem, it would seem that being a manly man had its downfalls.

She blinked, before grinning confidently. "Oooh! You're pretty good judge of character." She said giving a thumbs up. "Hm... Let's see..." She crossed her arms, closing her eyes as she hummed thoughtfully, bobbing her head from left to right as she pondered. Cracking an eye open she glanced over her shoulder to the woman. "Her glasses look pretty thick..." She murmured thoughtfully. "I bet she's as blind as a bat without them." She finished with a deceivingly innocent smile.

"Keep workin' on it, Eric," Zed quietly told the child, with a wink, "An' soon you'll be the numero uno Muscle Man!" Zedekiah quite confidently told the child, having no idea that the one to whom he was speaking was actual a female. He paused to consider Eric's words, bringing up a gloved hand to rub at his chin, nodding as if he were seeing the child's point. And then he laughed, at the part about him having this problem all the time...ha, ha.
<br><br>
That is usually the response that he got - laughter. Or, the sad eyes. He hated the sad eyes. However, with his cowboy get up, he usually just got strange looks, which honestly he didn't mind at all! Mind yer own beeswax, was his type of saying, an' I'll mind mine. He smiled down at Eric, rubbing a hand along Eclipse's neck as the horse made an uneasy movement. Apparently, she was growing bored with simply hearing the humans talking. "Whoa, girl, you'll git out there in a sec," He murmured to the horse, quickly returning his attention to Eric as she spoke.
<br><br>
"Her glasses look pretty thick... I bet she's as blind as a bat without them."
<br><br>
Zed grinned, and looking over at Kayla, nodded his head. What a great idea! ... She looked like she could take such a joke, and after all she had been all about yelling at him a few moments ago. So, to him, it was indeed fair retribution. "...Penny fer yer thoughts, on how t'git 'em away from 'er?"
<br><br>
Kayla, for her part, had no idea about just what the two were speaking. She noted the wide gestures the child was using, and so continued to stand there, brow raised. "Are y'all done keeping secrets over there?" Kayla asked, taking a small step forward. "I would like my horse back...sometime soon," She said, narrowing her eyes at Zedekiah.

Lips forming a small 'o', Eric stared at Zedekiah in silent admiration for a moment. Before she grinned widely and pumped a fist into the air. "Then, I'll be sure to work SUPER hard!" She said with determination. She nodded her head in agreement with her own words, if she could be the number one most muscular man she'd work all day and all night! And then she'd be able to do all sorts of cool stuff, like lift people up with one hand. Her fists tightened in excitement, her eyes lighting up and her smile growing. It would be utterly wonderful, no one would ever call her a girl again!

Rubbing her hands together, Eric's smile became more mischievous. She let out a few chuckles. "Heh, I'm going to use a magic trick." She explained. Her expression became serious. "I'll be counting on you for backup." She said before looking away from Zed and turning her attention to the woman.

She listened to her talk, then tilted her head to the side, looking genuinely confused. "Hm? Secrets?" She asked with perfectly feigned obliviousness. She blinked her large brown eyes, then smiled as though she had just remembered something. "Oh, hey Lady? Want to see a magic trick?! My uncle taught it to me." She bounced slightly with anticipation. "Okay, here goes." She said without really waiting for the dark haired woman to answer.

"Hoiya!" She exclaimed, thrusting her right hand up so that it was at the woman's eye level. She moved the hand around in no set pattern, making sure to do it slowly so that it seemed more like her hand was floating rather then merely waving about. "Now watch very closely..." She said in a hushed tone. "Three... Two..." She closed her hand. "One!" She shouted simultaneously opening her right hand; like she was mocking some kind of explosions, and quickly using her left hand to grab the woman's glasses. Using her own sound effect of "Watcha!" as she preformed the split second act. Not wasting any time she opened her mouth, letting out a hurried; "Zed, catch!" before she threw the glasses into the air.

Zedekiah gave the youngster a two-fingered salute, to let her know without actually saying anything that she could count on him. Ah, now, if only he actually knew that the youngster was actually a girl... He sat back in the saddle, ready for anything, but also a small amused smile on his face at the mention of a magic trick.
<br><br>
"Magic trick?" Kayla asked, blinking down at the child, and not well at all buying her look of innocence. Hence her taking a small step back from the child, as the hand wavered about, but alas, too late. Her glasses were grabbed from her face, and she let out a startled squeak of surprise. "What are you doing, why did you do that?!" She hollered, stepping forward and blindly grabbing at air. Then she heard,
<br><br>
"Zed, catch!" ... Oh no. They were throwing her glasses?
<br><br>
Zed blinked at this, but a grin quickly followed, and he reached forward in the saddle, stretching out his not-long limbs as far as they would go. He did actually catch the glasses, but a lens came out, not that he noticed. Wrapping his fingers around the frame, he then stuffed them into his shirt pocket. ... It would be cruel for him to ride away now, wouldn't it? So why was he thinking of it...? Well.
<br><br>
"You'd better give those back - NOW!" Kayla growled, still blindly trying to move forward. Zed grinned down at Eric, showing no intentions of giving them back.

Just smile and wave, boys. Smile and wave.

Were it not for the fact that Eric didn't like woman, and she quite enjoyed playing pranks every now again, she would have felt almost guilty. Almost. Snickering as she watched the dark haired lady reach out and move her arms blindly, Eric crouched down and slid a little ways past her reach, just as a precaution. She didn't want the lady to accidentally smack her upside the head. Or actually... It might not be on accident. Ah, but she had always wanted to use that trick on someone. Ever since her uncle had taught her, she'd just never found a good target until now. And it had been a success! That was two successes in one day, a new record!

Eric grinned triumphantly up at Zed. "Nice catch!" She complemented, giving him two thumbs up. Her smile turned into more of a smirk as the woman requested, or rather demanded, her glasses back. "After going through the trouble of taking them, it's be a waste to just give them back." Erica explained matter-of-factly. Laughing, she hopped backwards towards Zedekiah. Turning around to face him once she was a bit closer. "Now then..." She started with an all too sweet smile. "Seeing as how she needs those," Eric glanced meaningfully at the glasses in his shirt pocket. "I wonder what she'd be willing to do to get them back?" She asked, tilting her head to the side and touching her index finger to her chin in a thinking pose.

If Kayla was a violent woman, she would have wanted to smack Erica upside the head, and not so much on accident. "After going through the trouble of taking them, it's be a waste to just give them back." Kayla growled upon hearing this, and clenched a fist. “It would no be; it would save me the trouble of having to get the two of you back!” She said aloud, but stopped trying to press on forwards, standing still, with her arms at her sides. She was blind as a bat without her glasses, and it wouldn’t do any good to trip and fall flat on her face in front of these two trouble makers.

“Ooh, I’m shakin’ in my boots!” Zed taunted, grinning as he switched his gaze from Kayla to Erica. "I wonder what she'd be willing to do to get them back?" Zedekiah leaned back in the saddle, also striking a ‘thinking pose,’ bringing up a hand to rub thoughtfully on his chin. He looked around, then down at the child. Hm, something fit for a child’s mind, much like his own, and so his first thought was... “Mud pies!” With a grin, he looked to Kayla once more. She gulped.

“Yeah, how ‘bout get some critter-crawlers for her to eat, or somethin’?” Zed questioned, looking to Erica for further advice. Kayla took a step backwards, suddenly thinking that running blindly might not be quite as bad. She could find them later, but only if she could find her way home, to get her spare pair of glasses. Which, was a pretty big ‘if.’

"Oh!" She snapped her fingers, grinning at Zedekiah's suggestion. "Nice idea." She said with unnecessary seriousness. Her lips formed a rather goofy smile as she slowly reached up towards the sky,"A gooey mud crust, with some wonderfully slimy bugs for filling." She spoke as though talking about some heavenly dessert. Her arms fell back to her side and she gave a dreamy sigh. "Doesn't it just make your mouth water?" She questioned the woman teasingly. Her normal happy-go-lucky grin now an impish smirk, not that the woman would be able to see that without her glasses. Though this probably wasn't much fun for the black haired lady, Eric was having a blast! Sometimes playing around with other people was a lot more fun than playing by yourself. Even if you could do some pretty neat stuff on your own.

Giving an overly dramatic sigh, the boy wannabe shook her head. Placing her hand over her heart and looking quite solemn. "And, out of the goodness of our hearts..." She said, shooting Zed a glance before looking back to the woman. "You can choose whether you want to eat the mud pie, or dance around like a chicken while we attempt to hit you with it; like those pie throwing games at carnivals." She finished, before her serious expression melted and she grinned.

Striking a manly pose, she gave the woman a thumbs up. Using her salesmen voice as she said: "And as an added bonus; if you call and choose now, we'll even throw in a quality check for free! That means you can rest assured there will be no rocks or twigs in the making of your mud pie!"

"...It makes your's?" Kayla asked, in a rather disbelieving manner. She blinked, but was still unable to see either of them. She stood there, hands crossed over her stomach, as she listened to the girl go on to explain and give her the two options involving the, 'mud pies.' Her head down, as she couldn't see them, she actually cracked a smile and chuckled a little at the girl's ending bit, salesman voice and all. The child could imitate it pretty well, she thought...or would have, if she hadn't have been rather mad at this moment in time. Lifting her head up, she said,
<br><br>
"Why don't you just be like a nice, normal person and simply give me the glasses back?" she asked, to which Zedekiah let out a laugh. Shaking his head, he responded with,
<br><br>
"No can do, little lady. We;ve made our plans, said our piece...now, to get back yer glasses, ya've gotta make the choice. Pick your poison." Zed said, adjusting himself in the saddle a little more, moving his legs that couldn't quite reach the stirrups. Blinking down at them, he just suddenly realized this...funny, he had not noticed that little detail, before. ... Ah, well. He could ride a horse without those!
<br><br>
"Fine," She huffed, and turned her face down as she thought. "...The chicken dance." she finally said, as it would not involve her eating something like that. She wasn't afraid of getting dirty, see. So, she proceeded to turn and start jogging away, still fuming about this whole thing. Hopefully, a further away target would be harder to hit. However, she was getting too close to the flowers, and trampled a few down as she was moving. Looking down, she frowned, wondering what she had stepped on...and just when she was supposed to start this. Dance. Ugh.
