Summer 14, Year 7 11:00 am "Waaahhhh!! Mr. Bakeerr! Yvette h-hit meee!" A girl about thirteen, with pretty blonde ringlets and large, blue eyes with tears spilling from them ran up to the owner of the orphanage. Holding her cheek, she sobbed and pointed at the muddy haired girl wearing a large scowl that was tailing after her. "Only because you were picking on David, you stupid bit-" "Yvette, that is enough!" Mr. Baker's voice cut her off, and he rubbed his temple. "Yvette...how many times have we told you, that if you see something bad going on, you need to come get one of the adults? Not hit." Yvette crossed her arms, huffing angrily, "I have! But by the time YOU get over there, Little Miss Princess, here is already put back on her 'perfect mask.' Besides you always take her side!" The man sighed; she could never just back down could she? I'm going to be stuck with her forever... The pretty blonde peered around Mr. Baker's leg and smirked. "He takes my side beside he knows I'm right. Who'd believe an ugly girl like you?" "Now Danielle, that's enough..." "Besides," she continued arrogantly as Yvette glowered at her, "that David is a total brat anyways, who'd want to be that stupid kid's friend?" It was one thing to insult her, but to bring poor David into this? Not on Yvette's watch! Letting out a ferocious roar, she pounced on Danielle who shrieked as the two girls fell to the ground. Wailing on the 'princess' with her fists, Yvette snarled, "Take it back you hideous trollop!! You're the stupid one!!" "Yvette!!! You get off of Danielle this moment!!" The poor director attempted to pull the preteen off the other girl, but ended up getting bit on his hand instead. Stumbling back, he called out for the other adults to help. A small crowd of orphans formed around the fighting girls, though it was more like a gladiator battle; Yvette being the vicious lion against a defenseless human that provoked her one too many times. |

:gray Rita Flarhety :gray "Na, ah take it t'is is a bad time." Rita tip-toed around, dusty, a little on the rough side but smiling, eyes alight with musical laughter as she looked to the scene. "ah'm Lookin' fer Mistah Baker." She pushed her hand through her hair, eyes shuffling about the orphans, all so little, some seeming a little vicious. Now Rita may have been looking for a child but she really had no idea how to go about this. She looked at them, some of them looking perhaps a little intimidated by the woman in a leather jacket and torn jeans, did they want her as a mother. "Na, ah know yer supposed to come 'ere wit' yer spouse an all but ah'm all ah got and t'ere's no'ne to consent wit'." She hoped it wasn't too far a stretch for a single woman to want to adopt. She maneuvered around some of the bodies to face some of the other care-givers. "Ah brought all the paperwork, jus' don' know who I wan' jus' yet." Once again she scanned the crowd of children, most looked the same to her. Some a little more well off. She didn't want some kind of princess, the blond was out on principal. Not that she had anything against blonds, she just seemed too precious. She didn't want to ruin that, she'd never be able to handle a barbie loving, tea-party girl. She had settled that she'd want a girl, she'd think it too awkward having a boy in the house, though she was more than capable of raising one. |

"Na, ah take it t'is is a bad time." Hearing an unfamiliar voice, the director quickly went from nursing his hand, to facing the woman who had appeared. Luckily, by this time, some adults had pried Yvette off of Danielle, though it took two holding her by each arm to keep her from leaping back on her. The blonde scrambled up, her face already swelling up from the punches, her dress torn and dirty, and with various other signs that she had not been the victor. "N-not at all! Just the usual rough housing of children, you know. And I'm Mr. Baker." The woman's accent was a bit difficult to understand, but that wasn't really his concern. She was here for a child! It was always a joyous occasion to see a child finally getting into a loving home, but today there was an opportunity. An opportunity that the director was loathe to say aloud. Glancing at Yvette who was oblivious to the red headed woman walking amongst the children, and was instead glaring at the swollen faced Danielle, he gulped. "Na, ah know yer supposed to come 'ere wit' yer spouse an all but ah'm all ah got and t'ere's no'ne to consent wit'." Mr. Baker shook his head, "Oh no no! We welcome anyone who wants to be a parent, provided they are fit to be ones, of course. And understand what it all entails." "Ah brought all the paperwork, jus' don' know who I wan' jus' yet." It was like the opportunity was kicking him in the face. And he was going to take it. Clearing his throat, he side stepped, gently but firmly grasping Yvette by the shoulder, pulling her forward. Yvette shrugged off his hand, grumbling and crossing her arms. Glancing over at Danielle, she grinned and gnashed her teeth, causing the blonde to quickly duck behind a nearby adult. Snickering the black eyed girl faced forward, quite satisfied with her accomplishment; she wouldn't be bothering David for awhile, that was sure. "This...might be forward of me, but perhaps you could talk to our, Yvette? I...I get just get this feeling, that...that she would be perfect for you?" Smiling brightly, he hoped the woman would bite on the bait he was dangling out in front of her. It was then that Yvette realized what was going on; this woman was here to adopt. And she was the top candidate. Her whole body tensed, and she stared wide eyed at the woman. A lump formed in her throat, and she fiddled with the edge of her large shirt; she didn't want to hope. If I get adopted...no one would be here to protect David, or Gerty, or Patrice...but...but I'd have a home...a...a family... Feelings colliding inside the twelve year old, she watched the woman, not sure exactly what she should be wishing for. She had been discarded so many times before, to hope to be chosen...oh that was beyond anything she could fathom! Just...just pick David...! He'd be so much better...! |

:gray Rita Flarhety :gray "This...might be forward of me, but perhaps you could talk to our, Yvette? I...I get just get this feeling, that...that she would be perfect for you?" Rita looked her over, she looked a little rough and tumble compared to most, maybe a bit plain, but that wasn't a bad thing. "oh She seems lovely, ah suppose ah'll talk t' her firs' t'en" She clapped her hands in delight for a moment. "ah'm terrible wit' perhaps while ah'm at it ye can be a dear and see if t'ere's anyone else y' can try an pawn off on me." She gave him a wink. It's not like she hadn't seen the way she made the little blond finch. When she was finally settled into a little room where she could talk to Yvette one on one, she smiled pleasantly. "Na, ah know yer probably a bit of ah trouble maker, but so ah'm I, 'ave t' admit though, ye did a numbah on t'at girl." she leaned back and idly played with her cigarettes. "Nevahmin' what Ah said to mistah Baker eit'er, jus' cause he's sellin' ya hard doesn' mean ah'm jus' humorin' him, ah jus' like t' bot'er stuck up guys. My question is are y' ready t' 'ave a family, are y' willin' t' 'ave me as yer mot'er, an' d' ye 'ave any conditions t' me takin' ye?" Some kids wouldn't be adopted without a sibling, others wont take the bait unless you could spoil them rotten, she wondered what kind of child she was idly, she didn't seem greedy, she didn't seem very stuck up. "Go on, tell me 'bout yerself, ah wanna know what ah'm in for." |

Mr. Baker chuckled nervously as Rita winked at him and headed off to talk to Yvette. She was an observant woman. Nudging Yvette forward he smiled weakly, "Go on, the woman wants to talk to you." Gulping some, Yvette quietly shuffled after the odd sounding woman. One of the helpers lead them to a room and left them alone. Sitting in the seat across from Rita, Yvette pulled her knees up to her chest and leaned her chin on them. She wished she had thought to bring Rosie with her; she felt vulnerable without her stuffed companion. Even when the red head smiled kindly at her. "Na, ah know yer probably a bit of ah trouble maker, but so ah'm I, 'ave t' admit though, ye did a numbah on t'at girl." Scratching her cheek, Yvette had to grin some, "Yeah, I did huh..." Looking serious, she added, "But she deserved it, and if anyone's the trouble maker it's Danielle. She always picks on everyone, thinking she's better than us. But she's an orphan, just like everybody else, so we're all equal." Leaning back in the chair, she crossed her arms and frowned. "...she's so stupid..." "Nevahmin' what Ah said to mistah Baker eit'er, jus' cause he's sellin' ya hard doesn' mean ah'm jus' humorin' him, ah jus' like t' bot'er stuck up guys. My question is are y' ready t' 'ave a family, are y' willin' t' 'ave me as yer mot'er, an' d' ye 'ave any conditions t' me takin' ye?" It took Yvette a moment to fully grasp what she was being asked, both because of the accent and also because she had never been asked that before. Letting her legs drop and dangle over the edge of the chair, she swung them lightly. Biting the inside of her cheek, she answered slowly, "Asking me if I want a family...is like...asking a starving guy if he wants a feast...and I ain't ever had a mother before..." Shifting, she glanced to the side, "...and we just met so...I mean, if you're offering...it's not like I'd say no. And conditions..." shrugging, she moved once more so her legs were tucked under her. "...I think David or Gerty would be better choices...but I mean...so long as you don't have cats...I guess..." She wondered if it was obvious how nervous and scared and hopeful she was. How much she wanted to be picked, so much that it hurt her chest; how badly she wanted her friends to have safe homes too that her stomach had a lump in it. This woman, who she had barely met a few minutes ago looked like an angel to her. She was a way out of this hell hole. Not that it was a bad place or that they treated them badly, but any place without a family was hell. Or so Yvette thought. |

:gray Rita Flarhety :gray Rita chuckled a little when she offered up two other children instead of her. She was a modest little thing. "Ah dun know about takin' in any boys m'dear but i'm sure ye'll be sweet enough fer me." She paused for a moment. "But hey, ah'm jus' startin' out as head o' de police department, s' if ah can afford a biggah place ah'll see about adoptin' somma yer friends." She rubbed her chin. "an ah know just how pretty little girls r' always de rotten one's, sorry t' say but ah feel sorry fer whoever adopts her." She whispered over the table. "Ah dun t'ink I'll need t' see any'ne else. " she Came to this conclusion rather quickly. But she liked that idea, she liked Yvette, she was pretty in her own way, young, a good sense of right and wrong, resilient. Perfect for her. At lest in her eyes. |

Yvette found herself blushing some. Me?...sweet? She'd been called a lot of things her life, and sweet was definitely not one of them. It's only because she doesn't know me yet... Still, she couldn't help but smile some, especially when the woman said she might adopt some of her friends later on. That would be great, if they hadn't already found homes by then. This woman was turning out to be really nice. "An ah know just how pretty little girls r' always de rotten one's, sorry t' say but ah feel sorry fer whoever adopts her." Giggling, Yvette, just nodded, grinning in obvious agreement. She thought so too, though she always got in trouble for saying it. Having an adult finally agree with her was a nice feeling. In fact, this woman just seemed to be giving her a lot of feelings she wasn't used to. "Ah dun t'ink I'll need t' see any'ne else." Eyes going wide, Yvette's mouth dropped open slightly. And then broke out into a wide grin; even though she had wanted her friends to get adopted, being chosen herself was...well quite frankly it was a dream come true! And this woman, who now looked to Yvette like a red headed angel, had made it happen! "Are...are you sure?" Not even waiting for a real response, almost afraid that her savior would change her mind she jumped up, "I'llgogetmystuff!!" Dashing out the door, she skidded to a stop and poked her head back in, and pointed at the woman. "Don't leave without me!" Then without another word she ran down the hall to her room to cram all of her things into her tiny bag. I'm...I'm going home...! |

:gray Rita Flarhety :gray Rita Chuckled as the little one ran off, she could tell this little girl would brighten up her life. She'd have to enroll her in school soon and make sure she was all set up. The little bedroom she had set up for the girl already was rather blank, she wanted her child to be able to customize it as she wished. She stood and readied a cigarette for when she was outside, slipping just outside the door to locate Mister Baker. "Ah'll take 'er, if ah t'ink ah can handle more ah'll be back." She knelt down to dig through her backpack and retrieve the forms. She handed them over. "anyt'ing ah should know b'fore ah take her? allergies? fears? medicine?" |

Seeing Rita come out of the orphanage without Yvette, Mr. Baker's heart dropped, sure that the girl had been rejected. Both because she was denied a home and because he would have to deal with her outbursts until someone else came along. Walking up to her, he said with a weak smile, "Well, we have plenty of--" "Ah'll take 'er, if ah t'ink ah can handle more ah'll be back." Blinking, he stared at her, mindlessly taking he papers she handed him. Looking down at it, he began flipping through it, still trying to let his brain catch up. "Anyt'ing ah should know b'fore ah take her? allergies? fears? medicine?" Looking up at her again, he stammered, "I-I...uh...no...er, she has a stuffed dog that she can't be without....but that's about it." Turning his gaze back to the papers in his hand, he barely noticed when the young girl ran up to them. A blue bag on her shoulder and a raggedy stuffed dog tucked under her arm, Yvette skidded to a stop beside Rita. Grinning up at her then Mr. Baker, she bounced on the balls of her feet. "Soooooo can we go?? I said good-bye to my friends inside, and left David a note, so we're good to go~!" Maybe she'd cry later, about leaving her friends behind, but now she was just too excited about going home with her new mother. Hm...should I call her mom now...? Or later??...oh who cares, I'm being adopted~!! |
