(OOC: Ohohoho les. mis ref.)
2PM, Summer 26 Year 7

She wore a blue summer dress, flattering her body in a way that simply showed how little body fat she possessed. A necklace with a leaf pendant rested just below her collar bone, and she was bored. The normally energetic Rena was extremely bored.

She sat at a table, one arm extended over the round table, the other propped against her chin in a dazed and lazy state. Why was she here again? She wasn't particularly interested in ordering any more food. What she wanted to do was people-watch. The act of sitting quietly, unnoticed, but studying the social interactions and personalities of the people around her.
At least, that's what she planned to do. Unfortunately, nobody was really around for her to study, save for the sole waitress in the joint, who was currently not even in the room. That waitress was sort of getting tired of seeing poor Rena, sitting alone in the cafe, not eating anything.

Rena stared at the glass of courtesy water, brought without request, watching her reflection in the full glass. The ice cubes were even beginning to melt. She sighed bitterly. She would wait. She might order something if the time came, just so that the waitress didn't end up hating her, or well, if the worst were to occur, she'd just be kicked out (politely asked to leave).

Ulysses and Trey were a little late to meet the young lady as had been arranged for this afternoon, so Ulysses had them stop off at a place where there were some wildflowers and, now, Trey had a Pink Cat Flower in his grasp. Ulysses thought that might be best, not want the girl to be scared off by two flowers...plus from the not-yet teen boy, it would hopefully be less threatening. He had no idea what this Miss Rena Landon was like.

Stepping through the doors at ten past the hour, Ulysses paused once inside to look around. And just about the only other person in here, besides a waitress, was a young lady in a blue summer dress all alone at a table, her upper half sprawled over the top of it. Trey immediately honed in on the young lady and started trotting over to her side. Ulysses was much more sedate in his pace, but still trying to make sure the boy didn't get too far...not that it was much further to get to her from here.

"Miss Landon?" Trey asked, once he had reached her side, the pink cat flower held careffuly concealed behind his back.

As the minutes passed in her lonesome, Rena had finally succumbed to drinking a little bit of the water that had been sitting, undisturbed, on her table. She frowned and made eye contact with the waitress. Rena smiled as the waitress's facial expression turned from complacent into a fake business smile. Rena waved submissively and went back to her water.

A few more minutes passed, and then finally, the door to the cafe swung open. Rena stiffened, she dare not look. She was going to be able to observe someone! Finally! What if it was someone she knew? She rolled the thought around in her mind for a few seconds, before dismissing it. It would be fine. Even if she did know them, it's not like she knew anyone in the village too well. She only vaguely wished it was not that one man she met way back in the Spring time... he was so angry and quiet...mostly quiet. Angry would be okay....

"Miss Landon?" ...

Huh? That was strange. Rena cocked her head to the side, the voice, the person, was extremely...

Unfamiliar. She turned her head and met the gaze of a young man and an even younger man, one not even passed the point of puberty, looking at her calmly.

No, no, in fact, Rena swore she'd never seen either of them in her life.

"...Yes? That's me..." Rena replied, not sure what else to do. "Who is asking?"

"...Yes? That's me..."

Upon hearing that, Trey whipped out the flower from behind his back and presented the young woman with it, along with a 'hi!' Ulysses walked up another step, to be directly behind the boy, and was able to make further introductions for the two.

"Hello, Miss Landon. I am Ulysses Sloane, and this is my nephew Trey." Ulysses said, waving a hand towards Trey, who was still smiling up at the woman. "I apologize for being a bit late, I hope we have not kept you waiting overly long." he added, looking genuinely concerned. He hoped the flower would smooth over in case there were any hard feelings, for having made her wait... He could offer no excuse, wouldn't even try one. It was just a simple case of the time getting away, he supposed. Not quite entirely sure just how it had happened, really. However, as the saying goes...better late than never, right?

The young girl sat, dumbfounded, scratching the side of her temple and staring into a poor single flower that marked the nature of the meeting. She curled her fingers around the flower, and took it softly into her possession. Though flowers weren't what you would call her favorite, she wasn't about to leave it there. It was hers, now, after all. "What?" She asked. "Late?" She felt, rather, lost. Were they supposed to be meeting that day or something? She wasn't entirely sure. She'd never met this man, but he apparently knew her. She sat back in her chair, crossing her arms over her chest and staring forward, reaching into the dusty bookshelves in her mind.

Several minutes had passed, and it still wasn't registering. "I...I'm sorry, but I don't remember... why are you supposed to be meeting with me?"

"My uncle bid on you at the Date Auction thing," Trey supplied, without ceremony, his huge, innocent brown eyes blinking up at Rena. ... That was her name, right? Rena Landon? That's what his uncle had said, but...maybe his uncle got it wrong. . . . Oh well! They would get to meet somebody new today either way, so that was all that really mattered to the child. He went to take a seat at one of the empty chairs around the table.

"Ah, yes, my apologies again, I should have explained...but yes, as he said, from the Auction so long ago, earlier in the season." A pause, then, "I hope it's still all right to meet you here today?" Ulysses asked, looking around but not seeing anyone else that she could have been here with, but hopefully she wasn't intending to meet anyone else...it had been a while, and he had neglected to stay in contact with her, it was possible she had other plans.

"OH!" Rena found herself suddenly remembering a blurry day. "That stupid thing..." She bit her lip. She hadn't really stuck around to witness much that day. She remembered signing up for it, but at the same time, also remembered how much she loathed and discouraged the idea. She now looked over Ulysses. Why not. Getting to know someone is a fine use of daylight hours, too...

"I'm sorry for my rudeness, I had forgotten about the dating auction completely. Hello," She said. "You already know my name, but who are you two?" She laid the flower onto the table, next to her half-empty glass of water.

"OH! That stupid thing..."

Ulysses grinned, seeing now that she had remembered. Taking a seat, he likewise nodded. It had been quite a silly thing, had it not? "Do not worry about it, miss, it was a while ago now." Ulysses assured her, then looked to his nephew and said,

"Of course; this is my Nephew, Trey Sloane. And I am Ulysses Sloane, pleasure to meet you Miss Rena." Ulysses said with a smile, bowing his head towards her a bit. Now, he wondered, what could they do next to avoid any unnecessary awkward silences... Picking up a menu, he asked her,

"Have you eaten anything yet, Miss Rena?"

Rena looked sideways at the waitress, once again. Whom simply stood there, looking bored. Had she heard the entire conversation? Was she laughing at her now? She hoped not. She hoped that the waitress and disappeared as soon as they showed up and gone into the kitchen to wake up the chef. Or something like that. Because now that Ulysses was there, she could relax and use 'I was waiting for this guy before I ordered' as a cover story of sorts.

So, Rena grabbed a menu for herself and said, "No, I actually haven't eaten today. I've been sitting here with my glass of water and notebook, going over some old writings...you know. Practice junk. That seems to be all I do lately."

She scanned Trey over and smiled. "I hope it's not too weird for you to be accompanying your father on a 'date.' However it is technically a casual meeting isn't it? ..."

'I hope I don't embarrass myself. Sheesh. I don't know how to talk to kids...'

"All right then, let's get some food." Ulysses said, glancing over the menu then back at Rena to say, "Well, they do say practice makes perfect... And it is good to look back every now and again, keeps up from making the same mistakes, hopefully." Ulysses said to her, hoping he wasn't inserting his sneaker into his mouth. Rubber never tasted very good, after all...

"He's my Uncle!" Trey was quick to point out, his huge eyes blinking up at Rena. Hadn't he just said...? Oh well. Sometimes grown-ups didn't listen too well, Trey already knew this to be true. So, further ignoring the two of them, he picked up his own menu and started reading.

"Yes, I believe this would classify more as a 'casual meeting,' myself, Miss Rena. After all, you weren't even expecting us." Ulysses said with a small laugh, and then he also took to looking over the menu...again.

"He-he's your uncle! Right! I knew that..." She was mentally untying her tongue, as it had gone and worked itself into a knot again. "I'm sorry, Trey."

Practice. A practice. Date. That's right. She'd never dated anyone. Not in her twenty-two years of life had she ever been on anything more than a group-date for prom, and it was only for her senior prom...it was a rather unsettling thought.

She supposed she ought to...ought to try then. And even if he wasn't the one, at least it might teach her some valuable lesson. Or, even earn her a friend.

"Right." Was all she uttered, peeking at the menu. What was she in the mood for? Who was paying? Would she pay, since it was supposed to be casual? What kind of questions should she be asking him? Her mind rushed as it would if she were about to fall asleep for the night.

She stared at her menu. From the menu's perspective, she quite possibly resembled a deer staring at two bright beams of light that would soon come crashing into it if it didn't move.

Those beams of light, in her case, were personified by Trey and Ulysses Sloane.

Hearing her apology, Trey looked up to smile at Rena, and he shrugged. He really wasn't one to hold grudges at all, plus it was no big deal. "S'okay." He said, and then settled himself in to looking over his menu once again. Hm...what should he try today... Mac & Cheese? Nah, he had that last time. ... Chicken tenders? Maybe. Yeah, that was sounding good...

"And I shall pay, miss Landon, so please feel free to order what ever you wish." Ulysses assured her, hoping to perhaps ease some of the deer-in-the-headlights look that the young woman was currently giving off. He wasn't entirely sure the reason for it's being there, but he knew he must have something to do with himself and his nephew. Mostly him. After all, she hadn't even been expecting them today...still, he hoped the day would turn out well.

Rena's stomach cried out for something delicious. It cried out for breakfast. As Rena studied the menu, she noticed a small note that claimed breakfast was served all day. "Oh. Well. I know what I'm getting." She announced, relaxing a bit. "Two eggs, and a side of french toast... maybe some orange juice. That sounds amazing already..."

She was beginning to salivate. She put her menu down, and tried very hard to be patient. The waitress hovered over in her corner. She could clearly hear the conversation, and was honing in on it seeing as how they were the only customers she'd had practically all day. It made her eager, and hypersensitive to every customer's needs. A few minutes after Rena had put her menu down, she strolled by and set glasses of water down next to the two newcomers, smiling and welcoming them to the establishment, and refilling Rena's water, as she did so.

"I'll come back to take your orders in a few minutes." She walked briskly away before Rena and her empty stomach could get two words in.

Ulysses had been thinking of getting something from the lunch menu, but as Rena started to say what she would get, his thoughts turned in a different direction. He also noticed the little note at the bottom claiming they served breakfast all day. Hm...pancakes were sounding awfully good. With a glass of milk, of course. ... Yes. That shall be what he will be getting. Ulysses put down his menu and waited for the woman to return. When she did, he ordered for them.

"The lady will have two eggs, a side of french toast, and a glass of orage juice...yes?" He asked, looking to Rena to confirm. The waitress also looked to Rena.

"And how would you like those eggs done?" She asked. A moment later, after that was settled, he ordered for himself.

"I'll have pancakes and a glass of milk...what about you, Trey?" Ulysses asked, looking to his nephew. Trey smiled a little sheepishly, as he was the only one getting something from the lunch menu...

"The chicken tenders. And a root beer." He ordered, smiling up hesitantly at his uncle first, then the waitress.

"Sunny-side up, please." Rena chortled, listening to the other two order whatever they pleased. She was a tad elated, she wasn't expecting to get free food on this expedition, and the fact that it had presented itself so kindheartedly was even more of a treat.

The waitress disappeared into the back of the restaurant with the slip of paper that contained notes on their order. Rena was also glad to have that waitress out of her sight. She had never seen such a slow day, in all her visits to the cafe! Not that there had been too many of those, but still. There were a few days that had been just packed. Even more so than...okay, maybe not more so than the city, oh well.

Rena turned to her "guests", and leaned to her left a little, adjusting her position to become more relaxed.

"So, uhm. Hi." She said, feeling awkward, suddenly. What the heck should we talk about?
