He was glad she had laughed, some might have given him a strange look for making fun of his own disability. Though for the life of him he could never figure out why.

Shaking his head, he quickly scribbled out his answer, not catching that she seemed nervous. Pushing the book back for her to read, he smiled. No, I actually just moved here myself! Trying to get out on my own and stuff. You know "growing up" and all that jazz. :P

Glancing around, he noticed various small dramas seeming to be acted out. Dating was a rather foreign concept to him, and though he had heard his name announced, he really hadn't paid much attention. They'd come and get him if it was important. Scratching his cheek, he leaned over and scribbled on the page, Do you wanna get out of here? It's getting stuffy. And dramatic. Bleck.

Not really waiting for her answer, he scooped up her sketchbook and took ahold of her hand. Grinning, he pulled her up and started walking towards the door, still grasping her hand; why did it seem more crowded, even though some people had left?[/color]

Since he'd gotten here ridiculously late, Derek figured he'd been overlooked. Probably. Really, he <i>should</i> just go straight on home, but... Even a sporadic eater like Derek wouldn't miss out on the opportunity to get FREE food! Maybe some light sandwiches would be good... Maybe he could even sneak a few home!
<br><br>

So Derek kept himself busy with stuffing sandwiches into his pockets (and then, when he realised how messy that was, he wrapped the sandwiches in a paper napkin before stuffing them anywhere).
<br><br>

<i>"Oh Derek where are you my mini munchkin!"</i>
<br><br>

Derek paused. Was that his name? Yes, it was; but was <i>he</i> the Derek in question? Had any other men by the name of "Derek" entered? He didn't know. Probably not. Derek was kind of an unusual name. But had someone <I>actually</i> bid on <i>him</i>, the guy who arrived <i>after</i> the results had been announced? How would anyone have known of him?
<br><br>

...Who would be calling him a "mini munchkin" anyway? What did that <i>mean</i>!?
<br><br>

At first he tried to ignore the high-pitched female voice, but when he saw the same lady peering underneath the very table he was at, he, well... He had to speak up.
<br><br>

"Uh, h-hi," he said hesitantly. "Are you looking for...Derek? Tanner?"

Brie complied, and getting up, smiled softly as she walked off with Julian. Glancing at the couples still lingering about. If someone actually 'bid' on her, she'd know right? Well, whatever, she didn't recall anyone noticing her anyway... except she person she tripped on. Brie continued her walk. She was curious, and felt like asking Julian where he was taking her, but decided to let it be a 'surprise.'

Heidi was so confused. Where was he? Where was her date? Was he hiding from her? Did he not like her.. did he think she was ugly? Just the thought made her bottom lip quiver as she sat underneath the table. Why did this always happen to her? Whenever she thought she had a friend or found her one true love they always seemed to run away.

"Are you looking for...Derek? Tanner?"

The voice nearly scared her to death as she leaped up really fast. However, Heidi had forgotten about the table and hit her head rather hard. "Ouch!" Heidi cried out while crawling out from under the table. She then rubbed the area with one of her hands. Already a tiny bump was forming.

"Yes I am looking for a Derek Tanner. Have you seen him?" she asked the man before her while still rubbing her sore spot, "he seems to have disappear." Heidi pouted and and plopped down on the ground. "My head hurts and now my date is running away from me," she began to whimper, "can this day get any worse?" Tears began to form in the corners of her eyes, "Maybe I should just go home."

Heidi tried to stand up but this time the room began to spin which nearly made her tumble over back to the ground.

"Will Fortune has won a date with Aislinn Reynolds!"

Aw, well good for Aislinn. Sure enough, it seems that someone has bid on her. Smiling at her friend's luck, Will hopes that at least it was someone nice that won her company. She's certainly a nice enough girl. She deserves some happine...wait a minute... did he actually hear his name called next to hers? That's deinitely strange if that's the case, especially considering the fact that he doesn't remember bidding on anybody. Figuring that it must have been a mistake on his part, the musician taps a bystander on the shoulder, hoping that he was paying better attention than he was.

"Hey, what was that name for Ms. Reynolds?" Will inquires. "I'm not sure if I heard it right."

"Will Fortune." The man nonchalantly replies, clearly a little annoyed over being bothered.

"Ah, well thank..." Will trails off, realization finally settling in. "Wait a minute! That can't be right! I'm Will Fortune!"

"Is that a fact?" The man replies, shooting a glance over to her table. "Well, congratulations. She's pretty."

"Yeah she is, but I didn't bid on her." Will responds, not really sure why he isn't doing cartwheels and celebrating like anyone else would be.

"Well, in that case, you get to spend time with a hottie like her for free. I'm not really seeing the problem here."

Nodding to the man and uttering a quick thank you, Will's gaze locks in on Aislinn and Jill, who is currently in the process of patting the older woman on the back and congratulating her. Now then, since he isn't the one that bid, the black haired man is fairly sure that he can narrow it down to the two women sitting at the table. Would Aislinn have entered a bid with Will's name just to have him win...? Bah, what the heck is he thinking that for? It's right up Jill's alley. And it would explain why she was so interested in checking the date auction out. Now comes the interesting dillema of what to do. Confronting Jill right now probably isn't the best of ideas. After all, doing that might give Aislinn the impression that he doesn't want to hang out with her, which isn't the case at all. No, the best thing to do in Will's mind is to just play it cool. Speaking of which, he should probably get the drinks back to the table while they still have that particular aspect to them.

"OK, Will! Nice and smooth. Play it off nonchalantly. She's just your friend. A pretty friend who is kind, outgoing, and someone that you just so happen to be going out with on a date now. Just think of it as hanging out! Yeah, that'll work nicely..."

'Nice and smooth' however doesn't seem to be in the cards for Will today though as the musician manages to smack his knee into the table. Wincing in pain, he is somehow able to keep clutching at his knee in reflex. Now biting down on his lip, Will places the drinks down on the table and plops down in his chair next to Aislinn before rubbing the bumped joint. As the pain subsides, Will finds himself chuckling nervously now as he turns his attention to his friend.

"Well...um...I suppose you heard that little thing about me winning, right?" Will asks with a sheepish grin. "I, uh, hope you don't mind my company...I mean you totally don't have to do this if you don't want to! But, if you do want to, what kind of things would you like to do?"

Frantically, Derek checked his name badge, making sure he wasn't mistaken. This wasn't one of his weird alternate reality dreams, right? His name really <i>is</i> Derek, right? And there, on his name tag, was written: <br><br>
<center><font style="font-family: courier; font-size: 12pt; ">"DEREK SAPPHIRE TANNER"</font></center>
<br><br>

Yep, it was him. No question about it. He also now realised that his aunt <i>must</i> have signed him up for this whole thing. He <i>never</i> used his middle name, since it was so...stupid. Why couldn't he have a <i>cool</i> middle name, like "Iron," or "Steel," or "Rare Metal," or "Platinum," or "Boeing," or "McDonnell Douglas"? Why on earth was he named after a <i>gemstone</i>?!
<br><br>

It was something he'd never been brave enough to ask about.
<br><br>

And then, to make it worse, this girl began to cry. Right in front of Derek! She was having trouble maintain her balance, too. Was she drunk? Dizzy? Had she spent a lot of time going in circles or something?
<br><br>

"Uh, well, <i>I'm</i> Derek Tanner... So, what do you need?" he asked. He hadn't caught that she'd referred to him as "my date" - that undoubtedly would have shocked poor Derek and would probably make him start to act tipsy-turvey, too!

Although Jill had told her that Will really liked her.. and that was the reason why they had come to the auction in the first place, Aislinn still couldn't help feeling a little bit uneasy that Jill had bid on her without Will's knowledge. What if he didn't really like her and that what Jill had done was uncalled for? Perhaps when he heard that he'd won a date with her that he didn't really want to?<br><br>

She bit her bottom lip lightly, eyebrows knitting again in worry until Will eventually turns back up at the table. A painful return it would seem as the man somehow hits his knee against the table before placing the drinks down and taking a seat. Aislinn wanted to ask whether or not his knee was ok when he started talking and commenting about how he won. <br><br>

"I, uh, hope you don't mind my company...I mean you totally don't have to do this if you don't want to! But, if you do want to, what kind of things would you like to do?"<br><br>

At his reaction, she was assured that her worries had been for naught. She had a habit of overthinking things too much. Aislinn gave Will a grin even as she laughed lightly at what he said. A hand reaches over to pat his free one, a habit that she had whenever she tried to assure people. "Of course I don't mind your company, Will." she told him, chuckling. "And as for what I would like to do... well, I'm quite open-minded so.. how about you surprise me?" Another chuckle. Hopefully that wouldn't put too much pressure on him... because she really wasn't picky. <br><br>

Aislinn would be just as happy having a picnic in the park and taking a walk as she would if he took her to some fancy restaurant on the mainland.. although she was pretty sure that wouldn't happen. She would probably object to that idea anyway.. it would cost them too much money for a little dinner at a fancy restaurant.

"Uh, well, I'm Derek Tanner...

Wait.. what? Those few words which had poured from the man's mouth magically stopped Heidi's tears from falling. "Your Derek.. Mr. Derek Tanner?" she asked in disbelief as she looked him up and down, "how come I didn't see you earlier?" Before Derek could even answer either question Heidi continued to ramble on. "You have dark hair," she began to evaluate him out loud as her index tapped her pointy chin, "but your not super tall. Well I guess not everything has to be about looks.. your okay though." She did find him rather handsome but he didn't paint the picture in which Heidi had envisioned her future husband would look like. He looked a bit unorganized, messy but that was okay. Heidi didn't have to date all of the same type of guys. Maybe she'd give this guy a try.

"My name is Heidi," she said after standing back up with an outstretched hand and a broad smile, "but you may call me Heidi. I'm your date. I won. I bet on you.. and I won so now we're suppose to go on a date sometime."

Still flustered over his brilliant butchering of the English language, Will can’t help but notice his sister chuckling at him across the table. Well, at least someone is getting some entertainment out of his whole ordeal. Will thinks of saying something to her in a means to pipe her down, but it seems that her chuckling has come to an end all on it’s own, replaced by a raised eyebrow. Confused about Jill’s little change of heart, the musician feels something touching his hand. Turning his attention to the aforementioned hand, he sees Aislinn patting it.

”Of course I don’t mind your company, Will.” Well, that’s definitely a relief. ”And as for what I would like to do… well, I’m quite open-minded so.. How about you surprise me?”

Chuckling at his date’s suggestion, Will puts a hand to his chin in thought. Well, there’s that one thing that he’s been working on. It’s not set in stone right now, but is looking more and more likely. Granted, a bar isn’t the best place in the world to take a woman on a date, but with him possibly being the owner, maybe it would be better. Plus, he has been planning on upgrading the kitchen to actually have some full fledged meals. Of course, there’s always the café, but really, a good rule of thumb is when taking someone on a date, you should probably avoid their place of work. Mind made up, Will grins and goes to speak up, being cut off by Jill before he can.

“Well, it’s not my business really, but maybe the Fireworks Festival?” Jill offers up with a grin. “Everybody loves fireworks! If it’s anything like when we were kids, it’s one hell of a show! And it’s sooo romantic!”

“Th…Thank you, Jill.” Will replies, clearly a little thrown off over his sister’s ‘romantic’ bit. “Truthfully though, it might be nice to see the fireworks. Jill was right on the money about it being an awesome show. As for where to watch at…how about at Moonstone? You can see them really well from the beach. So then, how about it…” Will pauses, his cheeks reddening at the next word. “…date?”

A confused Derek first wondered if she had the right person. Dark hair? <i>Oh, yeah, I guess it's dark,</i> Derek thought as he pulled a small lock of his overgrown black hair in front of his eyes so that he could clearly see it. Since he didn't own a mirror, he'd rarely seen his own hair.
<br><br>

<i>"My name is Heidi, but you may call me Heidi. I'm your date. I won. I bet on you.. and I won so now we're suppose to go on a date sometime." </i>
<br><br>

"Uh, well I'm Derek, and... People call me Derek," he said absently, repeating the strange way in which Heidi had introduced herself. After about ten more seconds he realised that she had her hand extended. Oh, yeah! Derek grasped it for a handshake, though he grasped it much more strongly than he'd meant, giving the (false) impression that he had a very strong handshake.
<br><br>

"So... Where d'you wanna go?" he asked. "The café's nice... I'll bet the bar is too," he suggested. He really just wanted to go to a place that had nice drinks, actually... True, he'd never tried alcohol in his life, and therefore didn't really know what to expect in a bar, but they probably had tea or something in addition to booze. Right? Right??
<br><br>

Alcohol could also be useful in rocket or airplane fuel, heh heh heh... But, of course, that thought wasn't really running through Derek's mind at the moment. It was just permanently shelved in the back, where it would occasionally and randomly rear up and completely consume him.

Heidi stood there with her hand extended and waited and waited for what seemed like hours. Was this guy not all there? He seemed a bit odd.. strange.. unusual.. and overall just not normal. Then finally she shook her hand. It was about time.

"So... Where d'you wanna go? She heard him ask next. Did he mean right this moment? Boy he was sure was in a hurry to get their date over and done with. Perhaps Heidi had made a mistake and should have bid on someone else. "Uhhh.. I'm sort of busy tonight," she said while looking up a the ceiling. It was a lie but had she had to say something to get out of a spur of the moment date, "how about uh.. in a few weeks. When Fall comes around?" Heidi really hoped he would go for her idea.

"If that's okay then you can choose the spot. Make it a surprise!" Heidi exclaimed with a smile. She loved surprises especially surprises from men.

Heidi stood in place with a pouty lip. She had wanted their date to be a surprise, well she had been surprised for a moment in time when he first mentioned where they would be going, but she had also wanted it to be a surprise on the actual day. Oh well, nothing she could do about it now. "A picnic.. at the waterfall," she began to say, "that sounds divine!" Heidi jumped up and down and clapped her hands a few times like a little child.

"Should I bring anything? I am the best picnic packer in all the world," she told him and truly did believe so. To be honest she actually was pretty good at packing lunches. Heidi was a good cook despite all her flaws. "Just tell me what kind of sandwich you like and uh.. all that good stuff."

Turning around in a circle Heidi's eyes began to scan for a pen and something to write on. Once the items were found she stood near Derek and waited for his list of favorite picnic foods.
