Spring 14, Year 07 12:47p.m. -- Looking about the glade, Caleb can’t help but let an accomplished sigh escape from his lips. Certainly, the place is absolutely beautiful. His roommate back in rehab wasn’t lying about this place one bit. True, he has no intentions of doing what his little roommate 'friend' had bragged about doing here, but thankfully, the beauty of the glade is enough to assist the blonde haired man in getting the image out of his head. Stretching his legs out on the blanket, Caleb peers into the basket and smiles at the array of goodies. A brown sugar ham for the main course, twice baked potatoes, cucumber and onions, and macaroni salad as side dishes, sparkling apple cider, 7 Up, and iced tea for beverage choices, and a nice little assortment of cookies for snacks. True, most of them are all heart shaped and lovey dovey and the like, but Caleb chalks it up to the simple fact that the café that he got them from cooked them up like that, not himself. Standing up to survey the surroundings, Caleb takes a brief moment to look at his own wardrobe. Black Converse sneakers, khaki pants, and a blue and black striped polo shirt. Certainly the least formal that Zephyr will see him thus far…well, provided that she shows up anyways. She had said that she wanted to meet up again sometime, but the blonde begins to question the idea of making that sometime be Valentine’s Day. While romance wasn’t on his mind when he wrote his letter, the blonde can’t exactly say that he would be upset if anything related in that vein were to happen. Hopefully the day hadn’t scared her off. Now feeling nervous over the thought of rejection, Caleb feels his pocket and sighs in relief as he finds his cigarettes. Putting one into his mouth, the blonde is about ready to strike a match, but stops mere centimeters from the matchbook. Something about smoking here…well, it just doesn’t feel right to Caleb. Is the myth of the Harvest Goddess actually a reality or is it just a myth playing tricks on his psyche? Not for sure what the answer is, Caleb puts the cigarette back in it’s pack and pockets it nonetheless. As Caleb continues to pace and survey the area, he keeps looking down at his watch to check the time, grimacing as the time just seems to be slowly melting as the hour hand painstakingly makes it’s way ever closer to the one. Frustrated that he’s getting so nervous and worked up over things, the blonde opts to spend the remainder of his free time scrounging about to see if there’s any herbs about. The man’s shop is almost done with construction, and to be a pharmacy, well, it would probably help to have some herbs to fabricate merchandise. Humming to himself as he wanders about, the expression on the man’s face sours ever so slightly as he is unable to find anything other than flowers. Hmm…well, according to one of his medical texts, the nectar from Moondrop Flowers could be used as part of a sleeping aid. Humming to himself as he carefully picks the flowers, Caleb grins as he manages to round up a half dozen or so. Figuring he has a good enough haul, the blonde stands upright and pivots around to make his way back to the picnic blanket. -- ((For the sake of not wanting to be an evil picnic hoarder, if there is a foodstuff that Indy would like to see in said basket, well for convenience sake, go ahead and say so. ^_^)) |

A picnic! Zephyr felt like crying with happiness. A few days ago, she had tried cooking. And it had been the first of endless disasters in the kitchen since then. She had sworn off getting her meals elsewhere - she needed to learn, and eating out wouldn't help - but... well, this would be an exception. Although her desire to actually have an edible meal played a part in her decision, it only had a small influence. She did want to see Caleb again - it had been a while, and she was a little lonely. It was a holiday, too, so she figured she deserved a ady off. Besides, it would be rude to refuse his invitation in any case. So, here she was, cheerfully making her way towards Sapphire Glade. The young woman hummed quietly to herself as she walked, deciding it was quite a nice day for an outing like this. The sky was clear, and the weather was warm... Although Sapphire Glade was blessed with an eternal spring (a phenomenon she still couldn't figure out) it was nicer to have beautiful conditions throughout the entire island. As the woman continued along, the wondered a bit about Caleb's choice in days for their meeting. Tapping her bottom lip, she considered the other festivals this season. New Years Day was a bit soon since their last meeting, so it was understandable that he did not choose that one. She would have been busy with her friends anyway. Then... while she personally wouldn't have minded Spring Day, perhaps it was a little juvenile for the man? And besides that then there was the Flower Festival later - another formal event. Enough said. So this left Valentine's Day. It was during mid-season, too, so it was neither too soon nor too late. Though, while she could only think of logical and practical reasons for Caleb to choose this day, she couldn't help but briefly wonder if there was an ulterior motive. Although it would undoubtedly be interesting - her dating history was, at best, pathetic - she quickly became quite sure there was nothing of that sort. He had briefly acknowledged the 'romantic' intent of this day in his letter, but it didn't sound like he meant his invitation to be a 'date'. So then she decided this was a simple, friendly meeting and nothing more. And she moved on. By this time, Zephyr was just about to enter Sapphire Glade. She stopped for a moment before doing so, taking a moment to make sure she looked all right. While it was not a 'date', she didn't want to look like a mess. Two light pink ribbons tied her hair into low pigtails, which sat on her shoulders so that they fell down her front. The white, knee-length dress she wore was a short-sleeved, but modest V-neck, with a soft pink ribbon pulled around the waist and tied at the back, as well as a ruffled trim at the bottom. With that she wore simple white sandals, a watch and strings of stars dangling from her ears. She also had a small handbag, lumpy with... whatever she brought in it. Once she was satisfied with herself and knew she had everything, she walked into the Glade and looked around. Surely enough, in the distance, she saw Caleb sitting down. Smiling, she quickly made her way towards him. As she approached, the saw a blanket and a basket, all nicely laid out. Upon seeing this, she wondered briefly if she should have brought something better than she did. She shrugged the thought off, though, as she was within reasonable speaking distance. "Hello, Caleb," she said brightly. "I hope I am not too late." Smiling, she continued walking until she was upon the blanket. Glancing from the basket - perhaps a little too eagerly - to Caleb, she went on to ask, "How have you been?" [ooc;; nooope, it all sounds fine to me. xD] |

”Hello, Caleb. I hope I am not too late.” Ears perking up at the sound of the voice, Caleb looks up from the basket long enough to see a smiling Zephyr a fair bit away still. Though, with the sunlight hitting her mostly white attire through the trees, the blonde could easily mistake her for being the Harvest Goddess if he didn’t know who the woman was. But the main thing in Caleb’s mind is that she decided to show up. The blonde exhales, thrilled that the burdon of anticipation has been lifted from his shoulders. Smiling at the woman as she approaches ever closer, Caleb can’t help but notice as she eyes the picnic basket, albeit quite briefly. Well, at least lunch won’t go to waste, it seems. The look of hunger though…maybe she skipped breakfast or something? The blonde man shrugs it off, figuring that it would be a little on the tactless side to ask someone about their eating habits. Before he knows it, he finds Zephyr on the blanket with him. ”How have you been?” “Well hello there, Zephyr. You’re looking quite lovely, as usual.” Caleb replies with a smile, extending his hand as he does so. It isn’t until he sees his hand that he realizes that he is still holding onto the Moondrop Flowers that he had gathered earlier. Opting to not look like a complete idiot, Caleb decides to surrender his little bounty. After all, it isn’t like they are too tough to come across. Plus, maybe Zephyr will like them…or hopefully not be allergic, at least. “Pretty flowers for a pretty girl.” Caleb finally spouts out, smile still plastered on his face. Hoping that he doesn’t come off as being too corny, the man speaks up again. “And to answer your question, I suppose that if I was doing any better I would have to be twins in order to handle it. Is the new year treating you good as well?” -- ((Gah, stupid writer's block! *Vows to break through*)) |

[ooc;; gahh sorry for the late reply. I wasn't feeling well and couldn't muster up any posts. >_<] “Well hello there, Zephyr. You’re looking quite lovely, as usual.” Then, ta-dah! Flowers. The woman's eyes widened a little, her mouth opening slightly in surprise. She blinked as there was a brief pause before Caleb said, “Pretty flowers for a pretty girl.” Oh... huh. There was a short moment in which she simply continued to stare at the offering, a little stunned. However, a smile quickly came over Zephyr's face as she took the small bouquet of Moondrop flowers. She was really quite happy to receive them - she loved flora, and it had been a long time since she had received them. But still, she couldn't help but feel a little confused. If this was a friendly meeting, why were flowers necessary? Were they maybe just a formality, like the compliment? And what was with the little pause in between the extension of the hand and the words...? Zephyr was rather puzzled, but the woman swiftly decided to brush it off. It was probably nothing. "Thank you very much, Caleb," she warmly said, settling down on the blanket. She rubbed one of the yellow petals gently between her fingers, still smiling. "I really love flowers, so I must say that I am quite happy right now, surrounded by all this." When Caleb responded to her question, her smile widened. "Wonderful! I am pleased to hear you are doing so well. As for myself..." The odd emptiness of her house and her struggles with cooking drifted into her mind. Zephyr brought the flowers to her face, sniffing them... though she was really trying to hide the frown that came over her face. Truthfully, the new year, while definitely interesting, hadn't been so smooth or so great. She didn't really want to drop such a bomb on the cheerful meeting though, so she began grinning again once she lowered the flowers. "I would say that I've also been well." She sniffled, wrinkling her nose slightly. It felt a bit itchy all of a sudden, though she wasn't quite sure why. Although she couldn't see, she had apparently shoved the flowers into her face a little too much, as it left a touch of yellow pollen on the tip of her nose. Sniffling again, she laid the flowers by her side and went into her handbag. Taking out one of her extra ribbons - in case she lost her current ones - she tied the flowers together and set them down. "I also brought something... though, I will have to apologize. I sort of regret doing so now." Laughing softly, Zephyr produced a round metal container bearing a pair of lips, and a heart-shaped bottle. She held them out to him, grinning sheepishly... though, there was a glint of mischief concealed behind her eyes. Briefly wrinkling her nose again - what on earth was wrong? She decided to take care of it once she explained what these were - she said, "Since it is Valentine's, I thought I would bring this over. It's my own spe-- eh-- ah--" Quickly putting her 'gifts' down, she turned around and promptly let out a tiny sneeze. Turning around, she sniffed once more. She began, finally, to clue into what was wrong and rooted around in her handbag for a tissue. "I-I'm sorry, ah... I supposed I smelled the flowers too closely..." |

”Thank you very much, Caleb. I really love flowers, so I must say that I am quite happy right now, surrounded by all this.” Smiling at the fact that he got it right on his location and impromptu gift, Caleb can’t help but notice the look of confusion on the woman’s face as she accepts the flowers. Yes, Caleb is aware that it came off as more of a romantic gesture than a friendly one, but it’s fine. The positive reaction afterwards did seem to be genuine after all. Smiling at Zephyr as she settles on the blanket, Caleb listens contently as Zephyr describes her year, although once again her body language kind of gives her away. Even hidden behind her flowers, the blonde man can still notice the telltale signs of a frown on her face prior to her talking about how she is doing. ”Yeah, you’re doing ‘fine‘…flowers aren’t the best mask in the world to use, Zephyr. But…if she doesn’t want to talk about it now, I’m not going to push the issue at this time. I’d love to help if I could or at least listen, but considering that she’s the closest friend I have on this island, I really don’t feel like doing anything that could aggravate her. I’ll let it slide…for now, anyways.” Caleb soon finds himself being taken out of his thought process as he watches Zephyr retract the flowers from her face, pollen from said flowers clinging to the end of her nose. Hoping to subtly tip off the girl, he clears his throat and nonchalantly runs his thumb across the end of his own nose. But alas, it seems that Zephyr hasn’t picked up on the clue as she ties the flowers together with a ribbon before pulling out a couple of peculiar looking items; a metal container with a pair of lips and a heart shaped bottle. Even more peculiar is the grin that she is giving him to go along with the items. Well now, this is certainly interesting. It seems that Zephyr is definitely up to something…but what exactly ‘something’ would qualify as, Caleb honestly can’t tell. ”Since it is Valentine’s I thought I would bring this over. It’s my own spe-- eh-- ah--” Well, it would seem that the pollen that Caleb had tried to tip her off about moments earlier has made itself known to Zephyr, as the poor woman seems to be in the middle of a sneezing attack. Watching on as the girl sets the items down, he chuckles to himself as she turns her head and sneezes. Certainly nice that she didn’t sneeze at him, but it was entertaining to watch as she turned around to do the deed. Regaining his composure so that she doesn’t think that he is laughing at her, Caleb quickly weeds through the picnic basket, smiling as he pulls out a box of tissues. Smiling as he taps the girl on the shoulder, the blonde haired man offers the box to her. “Well, since I wasn’t sure if you had allergies or anything like that, I packed these away just in case.” Caleb smiles warmly as his attention turns back down to the container and bottle. “So then, what have we here? I'm going out on a limb and saying it isn't kool-aid, right?” -- ((No worries at all, Indy! Just hope you're feeling better. ^_^)) |

Oh! Tissues! Zephyr looked up from her bag to see the man holding out a box with a white sheet spouting from the top. Thank Goddess he was prepared. With a grateful smile, she took one. "Excuse me," she said as she rose to her feet and put it to her nose. Walking a few paces away, she turned her back to Caleb and blew her nose as subtly as she could manage. Pulling the tissue away from her nose, she wiggled it about, checking for any more irritation. It seemed she was free, much to her relief. Looking at the soft, thin white sheet she saw a yellow powder sprinkled about on it. Ahh, she supposed this was the punishment she got for lying. Deciding to think twice about it next time, she tucked the tissue into her bag to throw out somewhere later. Humming quietly, she retrieved a small bottle of hand sanitizer and squirted it on her hands. As she made her way back to the blanket, she rubbed her hands together to mix it about. Once having settled back down and after placing her bag by her side, she smiled sheepishly at Caleb, a slight colour rising to her cheeks. "Ahah... I apologize about that. Loved the flowers too much, it seems." Then, once the focus of the conversation settled on her gifts, she picked them back up. The enthusiasm and brightness seemed to leap back onto her features as she did so, and now a certain glimmer shone in her eyes. For the time being, Zephyr placed the round tin on her lap and held the heart-shaped bottle up. She spun it slowly in her fingers, watching the light glimmer off its surface for a moment before she met Caleb's gaze. "Ahh... you are correct, this is indeed no Kool-Aid," she said, her voice suddenly softer and her tone now sounding as if she were telling some kind of juicy secret. "This is not from our world; it possesses the powers beyond our comprehension and ability and can assist our kind in getting a little closer to that from which this gift came." Zephyr leaned a little closer, arching her brows slightly. Inside her chest, her heart danced a little jig: giving this kind of pitch was always so fun. "This little serum in particular is quite appropriate for a day such as this," she continued. "Eros' Drink... Infused with the essence of the god himself." Smiling a little more light-heartedly now, she leaned back and held it out to him and spoke in her normal, lighter tone of voice. "May it bless you with days of romance and passion to come." Then, Zephyr picked up the tin and held it on its sides, turning it around in her fingers. "And if you prefer the Roman sort, Cupid's Lips will do the same thing. In mint form." Once having handed off her gifts, the woman ran a hand over a pigtail. Hm, maybe she would make more. No one was buying them though, so maybe she had to approach things from another angle. Or sell something less... unorthodox. With a mental shrug, Zephyr turned her gaze to the picnic basic. "So, what delicious feast awaits us here on this fine afternoon, good sir?" |

Nodding in understanding as Zephyr excuses herself to go about her nose blowing duties, Caleb can’t help but smirk about her routine of actually getting up and walking a bit away to do said nose blowing. While she has eased up a bit since their first meeting, it still seems that old habits die hard as far as manners go. Which truthfully, isn’t necessarily a bad thing. More people on this planet could certainly use them, after all. Hand sanitizer too…well, color Caleb impressed. She actually thought of something health related that had eluded the former doctor on this day. Looking over the woman as she sits back down on the blanket, Caleb notes the slight blush on her cheeks; his own face following suit…blushing must be contagious. ”Ahh… you are correct, this is indeed no Kool-Aid. This is not from our world; it possesses the powers beyond our comprehension and ability and can assist our kind in getting a little closer to that from which this gift came.” His ears picking up on Zephyr’s change of voice, Caleb listens in as the brown haired woman explains the contents of the bottle and tin. Granted, with the day being what it is, it is only natural that it would be something similar to what she has explained. As he scans over the items and the source of them, the doctor inside of Caleb is screaming ‘BS’ at him. Being raised as he was and the fact that his very profession had depended on facts and logic, it is only natural that part of him can’t help but be a bit skeptical. On the flip side, the blonde haired man finds himself being hooked due to his own personal fascination of mythology, paranormal, and the otherwise unknown. While being force fed facts and logic has made him think in that manner, it has also left him very interested in the things that he doesn’t know or is unable to prove. “Well then, thank you very much, Zephyr.” Caleb says sincerely before adding with a grin. “Maybe later we’ll have to give them a little test drive…if you’re feeling adventurous enough, that is. All in the spirit of the day, of course.” ”So, what delicious feast awaits us here on this fine afternoon, good sir?” “Aw, now don’t go calling me ‘sir.’ Makes me feel old.” Caleb replies with a chuckle. “Then again, my birthday was a few days ago, so that might be making me feel old too. But anyways, for our five star dining menu today, we have ourselves a brown sugar ham for a main dish, twice baked potatoes, macaroni salad, and cucumber and onions as sides, our excellent beverage stand consists of 7 Up, iced tea, and sparkling apple cider. And, I took the liberty of borrowing some cookies from the café for desert.” Well, that was certainly a mouthful. Happy to be done with the list, Caleb reaches into the basket and pulls out a couple of glasses and sets them to the side. Hand going back into the basket, the blonde soon emerges with a pair of plates, smiling as he hands one to Zephyr. “Ladies first, after all.” Caleb says while smiling. “So, what can I get you for a drink, then?” Now looking at the beverages as he removes them from the picnic basket, Caleb’s eye can’t help but catch the Eros Drink, it being the most unique shaped one of the bunch. Just what in the world does it taste like, anyways? The blonde hopes to himself that he didn’t overstep his boundaries when he suggested they try it out. Then again, considering that she hadn’t slapped the taste out of his mouth when he joked about a kiss on their first meeting, maybe she won’t be too upset about his suggestion today...hopefully not, anyways. |

[ooc;; another late reply... orz sorry!] To be honest, Zephyr wasn't really sure what Caleb would think. From part experience, the majority of people did not believe such things. At all. Which was perfectly okay, because she still had fun nonetheless trying to convince them otherwise. But of course, there were the people who were completely sold by her spiel - they were simply much, much rarer. And while she didn't think them to be fools, she was a little baffled at how people could be so gullible. After all, her potions didn't actually do anything. They were merely her own mixtures of flavours and colourings bottled in pretty containers. But, although gullible, those types of people were the kinds she enjoyed meeting the most. Too many adults seemed too rational, and too reluctant to allow themselves to be swayed by magic and mysteries. Judging by Caleb, he... well, watching his face as she spoke, she couldn't pick up any definite message. Rather refreshing: often, Zephyr noticed an arched eyebrow or heard a laugh by now. She had to say she was pleasantly surprised as the man went on to say, “Well then, thank you very much, Zephyr." She felt a smile spread across her own lips, seeing Caleb grin as well. However, it faltered slightly as her friend added, “Maybe later we’ll have to give them a little test drive…if you’re feeling adventurous enough, that is. All in the spirit of the day, of course.” For a moment, the woman's face was a blank slate. She blinked at him a few times, eyes slightly wide. There were no particular thoughts going through her mind, not really - if one could see inside her head, a tumbleweed would have undoubtedly rolled by. After a moment though, Zephyr snapped out of her surprise, shaking her head a little bit. She laughed, her smile returning as thoughts flowed through her head again. Goodness, Caleb really liked to say stuff like this didn't he? But, she supposed this was his nature, and/or how he had fun with other people. So, not wanting to rain on any parades, the woman - not taking it very seriously - went along with it. "There are an endless number of crossroads in life, each changing by the second," she casually said with a light-hearted smirk and a shrug of her shoulder. "We will simply have to wait and see where the paths lead us, now won't we...?" As the conversation shifted gears and steered towards food, Zephyr felt her stomach grumble hungrily. She folded her arms in her lap, close to her torso so that she could press against herself and try to hide the sound. Ahh... being hungry was no fun... And as she listened to Caleb list all of the dishes, the woman's empty gut only seemed to get more violent. However, she had to restrain herself: after all, she definitely wasn't close enough to this man to allow herself to pig out right away. Goddess no! So as Caleb handed her a plate, she took it gently, still smiling at him. "Ah... sparkling apple cider sounds quite nice right now," she replied. She paused for a moment, hands laid neatly in her lap. It seemed rude to start helping herself to food... but she didn't want to wait either... Contemplating her options briefly, she quickly came up with something. "Oh! Allow me to make myself useful and serve the food while you are doing that." Reaching over and into the basket, she took out the brown sugar ham first, and some forks after groping around for a moment. As she began placing some helpings of the food onto their dishes, she hungrily thought: Ohohoh, sweet food, here I come! ... Ah, but there was something she was wondering. "This all looks delicious... I can't thank you enough for this wonderful spread," she commented, setting the ham aside and reaching in for the potatoes. "Did you cook all of this yourself...?" |

”There are an endless number of crossroads in life, each changing by the second. We will simply have to wait and see where the paths lead us, now won’t we…?” Well, definitely a better reaction than Caleb was expecting. To be honest, the blonde was thinking that he would be on the receiving end of a Zephyr backhand for sure after that latest line. Gauging from the woman’s body language, it’s safe to say that he caught her off guard with that one. Not anything major like blushing or an embarrassed hand to cover her mouth, but he still left her drawing a blank seemingly. The blonde didn’t figure that Zephyr would fall for it, but it’s all in fun after all. Although, Caleb does make a note to maybe scale back, lest his friend start thinking that he is a pervert or something along those lines. “Hmm…fair enough, Zephyr. Fair enough.” Responding to Zephyr’s comments with a chuckle and a nod, the blonde can’t help but notice as the girl holds her arms over her stomach. Coupled with the hungry glaring at the picnic basket that she’s been doing on and off for the past few minutes, the doctor inside of the man is leaning towards the idea that it’s been a while since his friend has had a decent meal in a while. She doesn’t look like she’s ill, so scratch that idea…stress can have an effect on eating habits…from observing his friend before, Caleb is pretty sure that it’s unintentional…well, best not to push the issue right away, anyways. Hopefully Zephyr will clue him in on what is going on. Caleb really doesn’t want to push the issue, but at the same time, doesn’t want to see his best friend on the island wither away from lack of food intake. Putting on a smile for the lady as she opts for the cider, Caleb nods again and grabs a pair of glasses. Filling the glasses up, the man closes up the bottle and turns his attention back to Zephyr who is currently serving up the food in the basket. After a couple of moments, the woman speaks again. ”This all looks delicious…I can’t thank you enough for this wonderful spread. Did you cook all of this by yourself…?” “Actually, Zephyr, I did. Well, save for the cookies that I ‘borrowed‘ from the café.” Caleb replies with a smile, proud of himself for being able to pull it off with the sheer meagerness of his house…’house’ not even being a word that can describe his little shack as far as the blonde is concerned. Yes, it’s free, but it’s basically one really large room. Kind of reminded him of his room in rehab, albeit a little more dreary. Hoping to change that as soon as humanly possible, the man vows to himself to get enough coin for an upgrade. Putting that rather unsavory thought out of his head for a moment, Caleb continues on. “Cooking isn’t something that I really excel at, but I can pull it off well enough to keep myself from starving, at least.” Smiling as Zephyr hands him his plate, Caleb thanks the woman and hands over her glass of cider. Getting himself comfortable on the blanket, he looks back over at his brown haired friend, noting as she hungrily eyes her own plate…yeah, this definitely seems a little strange to the former doctor. Curiosity killed the cat; right now the blonde is just hoping it doesn’t wind up killing him. “Say, Zephyr? I’m sorry if I come off as rude or anything, but trust me, it’s because we‘re friends and I‘m a little concerned.” Caleb begins as a means of verbal self defense. “Your body language has been coming off as you being really hungry. More hungry than somebody who has just skipped breakfast, anyways. That, plus the little pause you had when I asked how you were doing…are you sure that you’re alright?” -- ((Bah, no worries at all, Indy! As you can see, I’ve been a little delayed myself. Well, save for the cookies that I ‘borrowed‘ from the café." Zephyr paused in serving the food, looking up at Caleb with widened eyes, sparkling with a mixture of admiration and amazement. Honestly, he did? Truthfully, she did not know how his food tasted, but by the looks of it, she was pretty sure it was tasty! Or at the least, better than anything she could ever hope to make. Then again... anything even remotely edible would be better than what she could cook. But still, when the blonde man said that it was not something he excelled at, she smiled and shrugged a shoulder rather nonchalantly. With a nod of thanks, she took her glass before she continued to serve the food again. "Ah, I'm sure you are just being modest, Caleb," she warmly told him. "If it tastes as good as it looks, then your food will surely prove that you are a wonderful chef." As she finished up serving the last dishe, the onions and the cucumbers, she hummed quietly. Finally, when she was done, she settled down and got ready to eat. However, when Caleb spoke, she stopped and looked up at him. One of her eyebrows was furrowed with slight impatience - she was really hungry - but when he got past his 'sorry if this is rude' bit, her expression slowly smoothed into a blank slate. As she listened to him point out her signs of hunger, embarrassment slunk onto her face. With a soft, but uneasy laugh, Zephyr turned her face towards her lap. Her cheeks were dusted with light red, her lips arranged in a sheepish sort of smile. "Thank you for your concern, Caleb," she said softly, with a small nod. "I assure you that it's not rude in the slightest. I actually truly appreciate your asking." The woman's hands idly smoothed out her dress as silence briefly fell over her. Those words hadn't been a lie - she was grateful to have someone concerned about her - a friend - especially now that she felt so lonely here on the island. However, she was a bit unsure whether or not she should explain her circumstances to him. It really wasn't much of a big deal - nothing dramatic, nothing she couldn't handle. But simply telling him that, 'oh, it's nothing to worry about' didn't seem like a good answer. She didn't really want to worry him, if he was concerned. Not explaining things after he noticed that something was wrong probably wouldn't ease his thoughts either... So, with a soft sigh, she smiled weakly at Caleb. "It's not a big deal," she started. After pausing for a moment, she went on. "Long story short, my good friends - with whom I had lived - all left the island at the beginning of the season. Since then I have been alone, and I have been having a little trouble with such things as cooking for myself." Zephyr looked down at her plate upon admitting this, rather embarrassed and ashamed. Before she continued, a lie began to form on her tongue, something to redeem herself a little. However, she stopped herself. She and Caleb were... friends, right? Lying to him didn't seem like a good way to build on a friendship, especially one of the few she had here. So, she continued on with the truth: "I... unfortunately, have been spoiled. So, housework and loneliness... I can't say I'm used to such things." Picking up her fork, she poked at a cucumber. But, she brightened up a little, laughing a bit at herself. "As a result, I have been pretty hungry lately and a little down. But, like I said, it's okay. Thanks again for asking." Zephyr paused, her stomach grumbling again. A pain resonated from her gut, her hunger stronger now that the food as so close. "Ahah... that said, do you mind if I begin eating now...?" |

”Ahah… that said, do you mind if I begin eating now…?” “Of course, Zephyr. My apologies.” Nodding to the brown haired girl, Caleb smiles before digging into his own plate. Granted, he would like to talk about what she had revealed, but figures he can mull it over while the two get some food into their stomachs. Thinking it over as he takes a bite of his ham, the man can’t help but feel a little bad for delaying Zephyr with his questioning. True, he didn’t know, but he still can’t help but feel a twinge of guilt. Analyzing her answer, Caleb comes to the conclusion that Zephyr is telling the truth and not an amusing embellishment, which in this case makes the blonde relieved. Being alone though, especially when one is not used to it…it’s a personal hell at first, to be sure. A personal hell he learned all too well his first year of medical school as he tried so desperately to fit in. It took him a while, but he was able to overcome it. Hopefully Zephyr can as well. She definitely does seem to be a strong woman. Her admission of being ‘spoiled’ only cementing that idea in Caleb’s head, as that definitely takes some courage to do. As the wheels continue to turn in the man’s head, he at least takes solace in the fact that Zephyr at least has a house. At least he assumes so, as it would be a bit of a hassle to fit more than one person into the glorified cardboard house known as a start up shack. If she was stuck in one of those, Caleb imagines it would only be worse. Dull, dreary walls surrounding you, feeling like they’re closing in on you. In a house, at least one could get up and go to another room. The best that a person could do in a shack is change the direction that they are facing. Then again, a lot of that is based off of Caleb’s own experiences of living in a rehabilitation center. It’s not really fair for him to project his views of something onto someone else, even if it is just in his mind. Taking a sip of his cider, Caleb looks over to Zephyr and smiles. “I hope that I didn’t disappoint you with the food, at least.” The blonde says with a chuckle. “It’s not really a substitute for the hole in your heart, but at least it’ll hopefully do wonders for the hole in your stomach. If it’s any consolation to you, I kind of have an idea of what you’re going through. My first year of…” Caleb catches himself just in time, changing up his words. “Well, in school, for a time I found myself in a rather solitary state. I was away from home and had some problems fitting in. Eventually it gets better. It will just take some time.” Taking a break from speaking as he digs into one of the twice baked potatoes, Caleb hopes that he hadn’t came off as trying to downplay her situation. Granted, the two situations were fairly different, but all the blonde was hoping for was to show that he can sympathize with her. Trying to think of how he can be helpful, Caleb’s eyes light up as an idea forms in his head. Putting his plate down, he turns his attention back to Zephyr. “Like I said earlier, I wouldn’t consider myself to be a five star chef by any means, but I still have a proposition for you.” Caleb smiles at the dining girl before continuing on. “I know that you’re trying your hardest, but I’d still like to help you out. Cooking does take a bit of practice, so if you’re interested, I’d be more than happy to give you a hand in learning. Nothing flashy or anything, but enough so you can get by and not have to worry about starving while learning on your own. Think it over, at least. I wouldn’t be much of a friend if I didn’t offer to help, after all.” |

"Oh, no need to apologize. Anyway, thank you." With a grateful nod and a smile, she stabbed the cucumber she had been prodding at and ate it. Chewing and swallowing as slowly as she could, she proceeded to try the especially appetizing ham. From there, Zephyr went on, sampling a bit of this and that, working her way evenly and almost systematically through the food on her plate. As she ate, a blissful smile spread across her lips as the flavours tickled and tantalized her abused and deprived taste buds. It... it was really good! Although maybe the taste was enhanced by her aforementioned depravity, she could still tell that the food was generally pretty good nonetheless. Fortunately for her, a silence seemed to fall over the two, allowing her to fill her empty, empty stomach. Although Zephyr was doing her best not to ravenously stuff her face, her pace was noticeably quicker than normal, even if only slightly. But, er, well... she was too hungry to care, actually. Caleb seemed like an understanding man, so she figured it was okay. After a short while, she looked up and paused in her eating as Caleb spoke again, “I hope that I didn’t disappoint you with the food, at least.” Eyes wide, she quickly swallowed and chuckled as well, shaking her head. Disappoint her? Definitely not! Even if she wasn't starving, it probably would've been quite good. But being somewhat malnourished, his cooking tasted like the food of the gods. Zephyr held back her praise for a while longer, though, first listening to Caleb speak. She nodded, rather grateful for his sympathy. Knowing someone cared and understood the feeling was always comforting to know. However, she was quickly more concerned with that pause in his words: "My first year of... well, in school..." Chewing thoughtfully on some ham, she eyed him for a moment, curious. The pause had been rather unnatural. Why didn't he say, 'My first year of school'? Pondering, she turned back to her meal. Imagining if he had, Zephyr supposed she would have then asked what kind of school he was speaking of that forced him to be away at home and such. So, did he want to avoid talking about the details of whatever school it was? These questions floated about in her head, and soon fired up her dormant curiosity towards his past again. She supposed whatever he wanted to avoid mentioning just then was related to the other vague details he had provided her with in the past. If she remembered correctly, he had done a similar thing before when talking about his school. Hmm... While the woman planned to ask about this very soon, she was delayed as Caleb offered to help her learn to cook. This caught her by surprise, actually - looking up from her food, she blinked at him briefly. A cooking lesson from him, huh...? A smile soon spread across her lips. Undoubtedly, she would have thought to ask him for such a favour if she had not been preoccupied with Caleb's odd choice in words. She supposed she was rather lucky that he beat her to it, then. "I would be very grateful if you could teach me how to cook like this," she told him warmly and sincerely - she did mean this. "Although I'm unsure if I'm capable of creating anything even remotely edible, let alone as delicious as this is." She paused to eat a little more, but also to think. After swallowing, she added, "However, I would like to see what progress I am able to make by myself first. If I am still starving by the coming of summer, may I contact you?" It was here that the woman decided to bridge into what she was dying to know: Caleb's story. "Come to think of it..." she began, thoughtfully tapping her chin, her gaze directed skywards, "I feel like I don't know very much about you, Caleb. Where to contact you, for one thing." Zephyr, wanting to go on eating, meticulously began on her baked potato. She continued speaking, her tone casual but polite. "But also I only have a vague idea of what your family and life has been like. And I suppose you could say the same for me. So, since we are friends..." She paused, popping a bit of potato into her mouth. Swallowing, she concluded, "... should we not start to become acquainted more deeply now...?" |

Watching on as Zephyr enjoys the meal in front of them, Caleb can’t help but mentally chuckle as the woman tries her damnest to speed eat all while trying to keep her dignity intact. She isn’t literally wolfing the food down by any means, but the pace is a little faster than one would expect. The blonde’s mind is put to ease at least over the fact that it’s because her dining experiences as of late have been rather lackluster rather than her trying to eat fast just to end the lunch early. She did seem to pick up on his little pause in words, but to be honest, Caleb couldn’t really say he’s shocked about it. After all, the man can tell that she definitely has a brain in that pretty little head of hers. The thoughts of her poking about his past are put to rest for the time being though, as the woman speaks out on his little offer to be a cooking teacher. ”I would be very grateful if you could teach me how to cook like this. Although I’m unsure if I’m capable of creating anything even remotely edible, let alone as delicious as this is.” Definitely a relief. While hanging out with Zephyr is a highlight, the fact that he won’t have to worry about her starving to death is just as good. ”However, I would like to see what progress I am able to make by myself first. If I am still starving by the coming of summer, may I contact you?” Smiling at his brown haired friend, Caleb nods his head in acknowledgement. While he is slightly worried about her well being, the man is happy to know that Zephyr isn’t one to give up on something easily. In the back of his head, he finds himself kind of hoping that she is unsuccessful though, as much as it shames him. Maybe it’s a subconscious desire to be helpful to someone? To have somebody want him around? For a friend to not think of him as a failure? Caleb isn’t really sure as he’s more used to dealing with the physical conditions of people rather than the psychological ones. He doesn’t have too much time to wallow in self-pity though as Zephyr speaks up again. Well, no surprise there. It’s only natural that she would be curious. It isn’t like he’s been an open book or anything of the sort. “So, since we are friends…should we not start to become acquainted more deeply now…?” Friends, huh? Well, that is definitely a relief to hear that Zephyr feels the same way. Maybe he doesn’t have to dance around certain aspects of his past with her. But…maybe he does. ‘Disgraced doctor’ doesn’t sound good no matter what the circumstances leading up to it are, after all. And the last thing that Caleb wants is for his closest friend on the island to cut him loose due to that. While she might be understanding; the blonde kind of has the feeling that Zephyr would be; he doesn’t really want to take that gamble. Well, it isn’t like he has to spill everything, after all. “Fine with me, Zephyr.” Caleb says, hoping that his smile does a good enough job of masking his previous thoughts. Although, with as perceptive as the brown haired woman is, he doubts it. No sense worrying about it now as the man speaks again. “I suppose I’ll start with contacting me since that’s what came up first. I live over on Turquoise Avenue, house 19...though it’s more of a shack than a house. Suppose that I shouldn’t complain too much as it’s at least a roof over my head. Mailbox number is the same as well. As for any further details…well, for starters, shall we agree not to judge?” |

Truth be told, the woman was sort of bracing herself for a straight-out refusal from Caleb. There was a reason why he was working around the truth, and she had the impression it was something he didn't even want to get near. If her impression was wrong, then there was still the possibility that he just didn't want to get into it. So, Zephyr tried not to get her hopes up for very much. However, because of this, she was pleasantly (half-)surprised to have him reply with a simple, “Fine with me, Zephyr.” At this, the woman looked up at him, and saw a smile across his face. Studying his grin for a moment, she noticed something a little off about it. But it was a minuscule detail, one she soon brushed away as Caleb went on speaking. As he did, the woman continued eating, slowing down now that her stomach wasn't a barren wasteland. She nodded as he spoke about his house, laughing lightly at his comment about his home's status. "Ahah, I lived in a shack for a little bit. Luckily, not for too long, but I know that it was not a very fun but one must be grateful for free shelter nonetheless," she said, shrugging a shoulder somewhat casually. Zephyr briefly wondered about inviting him to stay at her house. She had some free rooms now, and she wasn't exactly enjoying the emptiness of her home. However, the woman dismissed the idea for now: it seemed a little too forward, and she wanted to give herself more of a chance to adapt. With that decision made, Caleb then presented another: "... well, for starters, shall we agree not to judge?” Well, it wasn't a tough decision. Meeting the man's blue eyes, her face brightened in a smile. "But of course. What right would I have to, after all?" she replied softly, her head tilted to the side a little. Placing a piece of ham into her mouth, she chewed slowly and thoughtfully, thinking about what to ask about first. There were many questions bouncing around in her head, yet she was having trouble snatching one to put out on the table. After a moment of contemplation, she decided it would be best to start off simple, with the basics. "Where did you grow up?" she asked, glancing up from her food. Resting her fork down, she idly toyed with her hair with one hand, and smoothed out the front of her dress with the other. "I grew up in New York, myself," she went on, seeing it only fair to share part of her life since she was asking about his. Not only that, but it would probably help it along if she gave the same amount of effort. "As I suppose you have figured out, I come from a well-off family: it was just my mother, father, myself in one large house though of course maids, cooks and tutors came in and out as well." Zephyr moved on to poking at her food as she spoke. The woman did pause here, though, taking a moment to decide whether or not to delve into much detail. But again, realizing it would be easier to get more details from him by supplying more of her own, she continued on. "You may have clued in already but my parents - specifically, my father - were quite keen on shaping me to be a 'proper lady'." Zephyr spoke somewhat casually, but here she wrinkled her nose a bit and frowned. "They schooled me on all sorts of etiquette and sent me to all sorts of lessons. I suppose many parents do this, but mine were especially strong with such things." Turning her face skywards, her expression lightened as she admired the wonderful weather. "Although, I can't say I'm bitter about it anymore... not overly, anyway. It shaped me to be who I am, after all." Deciding that this was enough, she turned back to Caleb. "So, what about you?" she asked, picking up her fork and eating some more. |

Breathing a sigh of relief as Zephyr agrees to not judge, Caleb’s body stops tensing up on him and he is able to relax a bit. The man continues eating, keeping an eye on and an ear open as Zephyr explains about her background. Sure enough as he had thought, Zephyr comes from the upper class. New York though…well, like most of the garbage he spewed, Caleb’s father was wrong about all New Yorkers being ‘loud, annoying, and selfish,’ as the brown haired girl in front of him doesn’t seem to fall into any of those categories. As she continues with her story, Caleb finds himself able to empathize with Zephyr as she talks about her own parents pushing her to take all sorts of classes on etiquette and the like, being nearly to the point of scary as to how closely it relates to him. All stories come to an end however, Zephyr’s being no exception. ”So, what about you?” Only natural that it would bounce back to him. Well, at least she didn’t tell him to reveal ‘anything and everything’ or anything of that sort. Setting his plate down and taking a sip of his cider, Caleb clears his throat and prepares to tell his own tale. “Well then, I suppose it would be my turn, hmm? Well, likewise, I’m sure that you’ve figured out that I too come from the better off financially end of the spectrum. Opposite end of the pond from you though as far as home goes. Dublin, Ireland is where I used to call home. Only child of doctors Cyrus and Rachel Moon. That being said, they wanted me to turn out the best that I possibly could. All sorts of lessons, tutors, and extracurricular activities. Pushed so hard that I actually graduated from what you would consider high school in the States at age fifteen. From there, I wanted to follow in my parents’ footsteps, and it was the same desire for them for me as well…” Caleb trails off briefly, thinking of the best way to proceed. “…I really did want to at one point in time. I don’t know when it happened exactly, but I started thinking for myself. Started to get tired of having everything forced upon me, you know? Needless to say, things didn‘t go according to plan as I am not a doctor.” Pausing again, this time to take another sip of cider, Caleb scratches his chin as he ponders on how to proceed. He feels slightly bad about hiding the truth, but at least he didn’t lie. He did say he wasn’t a doctor; being a former doctor would certainly fit in that criteria, after all. “So, as far as my parents go, I’m both eternally grateful and eternally frustrated at the same time. My mother wasn’t as hard pushing as my father was, but she isn’t exactly the one to lend a shoulder to cry on, either. They did give me everything to be a success in life, but at the same time, they gave me the realization that even when people are about, it is still possible to be alone. Not the kindest way to look at it I suppose, but I despise lying.” Taking yet another drink, Caleb looks back at Zephyr, trying his hardest to put a smile on. “Well, I think that is good on that subject for now, hmm? Moving along, what do you like for hobbies? Judging from your present for me, I would have to say one of those hobbies would be mythology and the supernatural, right? As for myself, I’m a bit of a thrill junkie, myself. Mountain climbing, hiking, running, swimming, the colder the water the better, horseback riding. And as a bit of an interesting contrast, I actually like painting. I’m not really good at it or anything of the like, but I can at least do better than stick figures. It’s actually a really good stress reliever for me.” Granted, it was a trait that he had picked up during his stint in rehab, but no need to bring that one up at this time. Things seem to be going rather well, so there’s no point to risk sabotaging himself. “But no need for me to prattle on about it. So how about you, Zephyr?” |
