Ulysses was glad to see her smile, that she was, at present, happy with him. Turning to the food table, he eagerly filled up his plate with about three slices of a variety of cakes, plus one slice of cherry pie. He also grabbed a sugar cookie and a few napkins, the cookie would be coming home with him for his young nephew to enjoy. It just simply wouldn't be right for him to be able to enjoy all these sweets and not the ten year old. Rejoining Aspen, he shared a smile and nodded as he accepted the fork.

"Indeed, I have never seen so many wonderful looking sweets in one place before, I do believe!" Nodding towards their table with his head, he looked back at Aspen and suggested, "Shall we go try them out now?" He hoped, for everyone's sake, that they tasted as good as they looked. He had a feeling that they would, just about any food item he had ever had on the island tasted very good. He took a step towards the table, still looking at Aspen, but would not move further until the young lady did.

Dark brought his drink to his slightly chapping lips, with the slightest back thought of the need to buy Chap Stick. His ears perked as KyMee started to speak, telling Dark that she was not that much of an interesting person and that all she did was draw and take care of her dog. The drawing part was what got Dark the most. He was a thief, his favorite item to steal being artwork. Dark instantly placed his glass on the table and leaned forward.

“You draw?” He asked almost intently, but not in a creepy or threatening way—more curious then anything. “I—” he gestured to himself—“absolutely love art. It is one of my passions, although, I cannot create it to save my life.” He chuckled, “but I know how to appreciate it.”

Dark leaned back in his chair and brushed some of his long purple hair out of his face and said casually, “You should show me your drawings sometime; I would absolutely love to see how beautiful they are because I’m sure anything you create is as beautiful as you are.” Dark gave her a smirk at his weak line.

Gobbling down her last cookie, Brie's eyes started to beam when she hear Wes' answer. "That's Great! Unmei's Gradens?" Brie thought about the beautiful flowers that she'd see over there. It sounded rather nice, it wouldn't be too cold, and the scenery would be very lovely at this time of year. Brie brushed her curls off of her shoulders and placed her hands neatly in her lap.

"Why not? I haven't been to the gardens yet, been to busy being lost" Wes chuckled, swallowing the last of his flan. He stood up, pushing his chair in. "Are you ready" he asked Brie.

Thinking more about it, Wes might have seen the gardens somewhere. He remembered it, being labeled on the map he bought the day of his arrival on the island.

Aspen eyed the desserts on Ulysses’ plate. So much sugar on one plate! The cherry pie looked especially good. But then, she noticed him separating a cookie from all the other things, and she wondered why he’d done that. She looked up at Ulysses when his mouth began to move again. Unfortunately she couldn’t make out most of what he was saying. If only I could just hear his voice, even for a second. From the looks of it, though, he was just replying to her comment about the desserts. Aspen contented herself by smiling in response.

She nodded when Ulysses suggested that they head back to the table. She started walking, careful not to let anything topple off her plate. She passed by each table, almost forgetting which one to go to until she saw the bunch of flowers resting on her table. She remembered the yellow rose that was still tucked in her hair, and she patted it fondly.

Walking up to Ulysses’ chair, she pulled it out for him and went back to her own seat. With the plate right in front of her, she finally got a good look at her desserts. Oh my. She grinned, realizing she had taken way too much. The one time she finally tried to have some self-control, her greedy eyes had gotten the best of her. Gotta give some credit to whoever set this all up, she mused.

Grabbing the notecard, she wrote again to Ulysses while waiting for him to get settled. “What are you keeping the extra cookie for?” read the words in fine, but rushed handwriting.

(OOC: Haha.. you have writer’s block too? Kinda crazy how the muse just comes and goes! Anyway, I just got mine back, so I’ll try to squeeze out replies while I can still hang on to it. Sorry for the lateness-es-es.)

Brie chuckled along with Wes. "I've been so busy getting lost, to not be there. It's the first place I stumbled across" Brie said, having a small flashback of the place's beauty. She gently pushed her chair in and walked over to Wes. "I'm ready." Shed nodded her head.

"Hey, shouldn't I be the one doing that?" Ulysses asked, when she had pulled out his chair, though she probably hadn't seen him speak. With a small shrug and a chuckle, though he went as sat down in the chair she'd pulled out for him, set his plate down, and then watched as she was writing something on the note card. Reading it over, a sheepish smile slowly spread across his face, and he looked up at her with a few of his teeth showing through a somewhat bashful grin.

"Found out, was I?" He chuckled lightly, then reached into his inside jacket pocket for a pen he knew to be there, and, taking a napkin, he scribbled on it what he wanted to say, and handed it over to Aspen. He figured this might be a better way of doing things, at least with answering questions that involved more than one or two word answers. Smiling, he leaned back a little, still sitting up straight, and glanced over at the table with sweets with a contemplative look on his face. Then smiled again at Aspen.

The napkin read, "For my Nephew, he is ten and if he knew what sweets were here and I didn't bring him anything, he would never forgive me. See, he loves sugar cookies. ... Hm, maybe I should grab another before I leave."

"Then, lets us depart" Wes said, leading her across the cafe. As of common courtesy, Wes held the door open for her. Even after living with his father for eight years, the fine teachings of being a gentleman never left him. His mother always had tea parties, and made him attend, helping her with refreshments. Well, that was one of the good things she did since her death.

Aspen took a bite of pecan pie as Ulysses scribbled back a reply. Writing back and forth was a lot easier than reading lips, and besides that, she was straining her voice by talking. She was curious what the sheepish smile on Ulysses’ face really meant, and she thought that maybe she should’ve asked who the cookie was for instead of what. She finished off the bite of pie, and held the fork between her lips as the napkin was passed to her. She read the note, then imagined what would happen if Ulysses came home to his nephew empty-handed. Aspen smiled and thought, Well, we can’t have that happen, can we?

Putting the fork down, she wrote back, “I’ve got a hunch that he’ll probably want something more than just cookies. Especially if he’s got a sweet tooth like yours. Here, your nephew can have these as well.” She placed the napkin on top of the extra box of chocolates, the ones she’d bought for herself. With all the desserts piled high on her plate, it was unlikely that she would end up eating the bonbons anyway.

She thought about what it’d be like to have family living in town. She missed having them close by. The closest she had to a little brother back home was her nine-year-old cousin who loved wild animals. He’d probably like all the forests and pastures here in Obsidian. Maybe she’d ask Ulysses if his nephew would like a pen pal in another town.

Ulysses blinked as he read her note, then shook his head as he wrote back, "Oh, but aren't those for you? There are plenty of other desserts here that I could bring back to him, I don't want to be taking something of yours." and handed her the napkin once more. He looked at her with a bit of a raised eyebrow, kindness in his eyes but his lips in a tight smile. Until, of course, he looked down at his food.

Then he replaced the pen with a fork, and started in on one of his pieces of cake, which happened to be chocolate. He smiled as the flavor hit him, and swallowed, then licked him lips. "Mmm, very good." He said aloud, nodding his head. Maybe, he would have to bring some back for Trey...

Aspen nudged the box of chocolates over to Ulysses, insisting that he bring them home. She could see that he probably preferred if she kept them instead, but she’d already had her fill of sweets for a long time. She wrote back, “It’ll be a Valentine’s Day gift for your nephew. Since you got me the flowers, and you have the other box of bonbons.. then, if you bring these chocolates home we’ll all have something to commemorate the holiday.” She drew on a flower just like before, hoping to butter up Ulysses into changing his mind.

She picked up her fork and cut into her slice of fluffy strawberry cake, taking a bite and enjoying the taste of real strawberry filling. There were bits of fruit, and just the right amount of sugar, and – Aspen paused to remember what this taste was – a splash of strawberry liqeur! There wasn’t a lot of it, but it still gave the flavor a bit of a kick. She was surprised, then somewhat disappointed when she reached the last piece of the cake. She wasn’t a big fan of the color pink, but when it tasted so sweet and delightful, maybe it wasn’t so bad after all.

She didn’t have to read Ulysses’ lips to know that he was enjoying his dessert, too. Clearing her throat softly, Aspen made another attempt to speak. “Are.. you and.. your nephew.. close?” After consuming all the sugar from the pie and cake, her voice didn’t come out as strong as she wanted. But she knew it was still louder than a whisper, at least.

Ulysses smiled lightly as he read the note, nodded a little, but then thought of something else, particularly upon seeing the last part. Smiling a little more, he wrote something back, and handed her the napkin along with sliding the box a little closer to her once more. Smiling to himself, he had a mildly innocent look about him as he went about finishing off the few pieces of cake on his plate, leaving only the pie now.

"All right, I shall - but only if you draw one of your pretty flowers on the box for him to enjoy." Ulysses had written. Hearing her clear her throat, he looked up, and smiled softly and nodded to what she had asked. Putting down his fork, he leaned back a little and said,

"Yes, we are close. His father, my brother, allowed him to come here with me as the air is better for him." A pause, then, waving his hand in the air a little close to his chest, he said, "He has asthma." And he made sure to speak slowly and pronounce his words clearly, so hopefully it was a little easier for her to read his lips.

Aspen nodded and reached for her marker. Decorating the box with a flower just like Ulysses had requested, she let the ink dry before passing the box back to him. She was becoming fond of drawing the little five-petal blossom. She picked up a cookie, admiring the heart shaped sprinkles on top, then took a bite.

Her smile faltered a little when Ulysses told her about his nephew’s condition. The air was certainly better here, that much was true. But for the boy to live with limits on how fast he could run, or to have to worry about something as simple as air.. it kind of took away the freedom of being young and feeling invincible. Aspen wasn’t sad for him, but she did feel sympathetic.

Flipping the napkin over, she wrote, “Yeah, this is a really nice place to live. I guess it’ll be good for your nephew since there aren’t any cars here to mess up the air. Oh, and I hear there are waterfalls and other places to explore too. Do you and your nephew do any of that male bonding stuff, like fishing?” She remembered that Ulysses had said that he’d brought his nephew here. Aspen broke off a chunk of her cookie and chewed on it thoughtfully. Her uncle had once lived here when he was a young bachelor. Maybe this was where everyone went to make a new start in life. It gave her hope that maybe she’d be able to figure out her life here, too.

Chuckling at his date's joke, he nodded in agreement, following her back to the table. Setting down his own plate, stacked high with goodies, he plopped down into the chair. Without any hesitation he stuffed a whole cookie in his mouth, glancing up only when Lyn asked her question. Leaning back in his chair, popping a tart in his mouth, Fred looked around them. Quite frankly he didn't know anyone else there; sure he had seen a handful of them before, but no on he interacted with.

Shrugging, he looked back at Lyn a bit sheepishly, swallowing the tart. "I am ashamed to say that I do not know many people on the island. And the ones I do know are not here today." Glancing around the cafe' once more he shrugged. "I'm not exactly the social type, ya?" Turning his eye back on Lyn, he grinned, some tart stuck in his teeth.

Ulysses smiled as Aspen drew the flower for him without further thought, she really was a warm-hearted woman, he could tell. He watched her pick up a cookie and look at it a moment before biting into it. So he it was that he had seen her smile falter, but wasn't sure why. He supposed it had to do with his nephew though, as he had been mentioning the child at the time. Reading her note on the napkin, it was his turn for his expression to falter. He had almost winced, but caught himself, so it just came out more as a twitch. No cars, indeed...

"No, not really. I have not tried fishing, have you? ... We go to festivals together, and go for walks outside. I...do not know if he has been to the waterfall as of yet, though." Ulysses responded slowly, glancing off to the side with a suddenly thoughtful expression. Smiling, with a shrug of his shoulders, he looked back to Aspen before starting in on his pie now, and awaited her answer on the fishing. He doubted, but hey, one could never tell, now could they?
