. NEW YEARS EVE
<br>Winter 31st || 7:00 PM - 12:00 AM
<br>Atmosphere: Lively!
<br>Formal attire is highly recommended for this occasion, but not mandatory
<br>
<br>There is a definite buzz in the air at Chrysocolla Estate as the last hours of Year 6 dwindle to a close. As one approaches the grand building, it is apparent that Mayor Thomas cut no corners and did no skimping on this celebration. The yard is glimmering with lights spangled everywhere, like a thousand stars clinging to the trees and the front of the mayor's home. The walkway is clear of snow and the dead leaves that had been trapped underneath - it is immaculate, perfect. One can only imagine how long it took the employees to clean it, and how meticulously they would have had to work. But it was effort well spent: the way the flawless path leads towards the building, which is radiating such a warm, welcoming glow in the midst of a winter night, makes for quite the picturesque little scene.
<br>
<br>Upon entering the Estate, one is met by the excited air at full force. The mayor and his employees have cleared out all of the furniture they could manage from the entrance and the lobby areas. And the estate employees are still busy bustling about, making sure food is fresh and in good supply and that the guests are happy. It looks like the mayor really decided to go all-out: his workers are all dressed quite nicely, the males donning sharp suits and the women wearing elegant black gowns. The head honcho himself can be seen around in a tuxedo of his own, greeting guests with a wide smile spread across his (slightly rosy?) face. As usual, though, he has set up something for himself to do. He has a table set up near the entrance with several pads of paper on it, along with an assortment of writing utensils, hole punches and a roll of sparkling gold string. On one side, there is a large tree (the mayor's leftover Christmas tree, perhaps?) and on the other, a large red balloon tied to a canister of helium. On a sign behind the table, it reads:
<br>
<br>"Time to reflect, citizens of Obsidian!
<br>Write something good you have done this past year and hang them up on the tree for all to see.
<br>Confess things you did that maybe weren't so great, and we'll send them away into the sky at midnight!
<br>(Signing is optional, so don't be shy!)"

<br>On the counter where the receptionist is usually found, one can find the night's spread. Another long table has been set up behind it to accomodate everything. As usual, an almost unfathomable variety of dishes, snackes and drinks are laid out for all to enjoy. Delectable meats, colourful salads, freshly baked breads, rich desserts... it seems like anything one can imagine is here. As for beverages, there are an assortment of champagnes and wines to choose from... as well as some sparkling juices and ciders for those who can't drink. At the end of the table, one can find the utensils, which appear to be fine china and silverware. And which also seem almost too fancy to use.
<br>
<br>The lobby area has been cleared out and is the main hub for guests. Tables line the wall, each one adorned with an arrangement of flowers and draped in clean, white tableclothes that will undoubtedly cause their cleaners some headache. A string quartet has apparently been hired, and are set up at the back wall. The open space in front of them is apparently for anyone who cares to dance. On the wall opposite the musicians is a large clock so that everyone can keep an eye on the time. At midnight, the mayor plans to gather everyone outside and count down the final seconds of the year, as well as welcome the new.
<br>

Humming to himself as he paces back and forth in front of the Mayor’s estate, Caleb can’t help but feel like a bit of a snob wearing his tuxedo. Yes, it is formal attire, but with all the ‘look at how great our son is!’ crap he had to put up with when he was younger at these sort of things…yeah, it kind of left a bit of a negative taste in his mouth. Why is he here again? Oh right, because of his little riddle of sorts. Granted, he could have chosen something that’s not putting off the upper class vibes not as much, but still, considering the fact that he went and asked for a kiss on their first meeting, the man figures that it would be a good idea to have the second meeting be someplace that’s not too terribly secluded.

Caleb continues to pace about, stopping only to take a cigarette case out of his tuxedo and light one up. It’s outdoors and nobody is around, so why not? Definitely help to soothe his nerves…wait, why is he nervous again? It isn’t like this is a date or anything romantic of the sort, at least not at this time in Caleb’s mind. Maybe it’s the anticipation if wondering if she’ll figure it out. Or if Zephyr will even bother trying to figure it out. They got along well enough, but still…there’s always that feeling of doubt that seems to permanently dwell in the man’s mind. Well, in a worse case scenario, at least she didn’t coerce him into drinking and then by proxy unintentionally de-railing his life.

Taking one final drag, the blonde drops the butt of the cigarette to the ground before crushing it under his foot. Yes, Caleb realizes the irony of a doctor being a smoker, but he’s happy enough for now with being able to put the bigger vice in drinking to rest. The blonde shakes the thoughts from his head and finally makes his way in. Sure enough, the room is bustling with activity. Sure enough, it looks similar to him. Sure enough, he feels like he’s died a little inside…maybe his potential companion will feel the same way and they’ll be able to duck away early. Maybe she’ll no show and he’ll duck away anyways. Deciding to make the best of an unnerving situation for now though, Caleb makes his way over to the drinks, opting on a nice sparkling Cold Duck. Sighing contently as the fluid touches his lips, the blonde leans against a wall, hoping that the feeling of unease that is currently plaguing him eventually subsides.

Well, she wouldn't see any other place he could possibly be talking about.

He said she might be able to find him "a few days from now around this same time" - obviously meaning New Years Eve... after all, what else could he possibly be referring to? And a bigger place? The Estate was probably the largest public area on the island. Caleb had also mentioned one of her self-proclaimed best traits... most likely meaning dancing. After some checking around, she found that the celebration at the mayor's house was a (recommended) formal event - a setting where they "should both be comfortable due to their parents". Well, while neither of them explicitly stated they were from an upper class family, it had apparently been a mutually reached conclusion. So, yes. In conclusion, she was pretty much 100% sure this was the place he meant.

However, Zephyr's mind was a little less focused than she would have liked. Nathaniel, Evelyne and Aiden were all leaving in a matter of days... and then where would that leave her? Although she was happy for them and she supported their decisions, she couldn't help but feel a bit uneasy about what would happen once they were gone. After all, all four of them had begun functioning like a family - she couldn't help but feel a little abandoned, having them all leave so suddenly. And as sad as it was, she was not as close to anyone else on the island as she was to the three of them. There was no one else whose company she enjoyed everyday, or went to for help, or generally felt genuinely comfortable around. And, when she thought about it, she had never really been completely alone in her life. There was always someone pushing her forward, or someone to help, or someone to just be friends with. Loneliness was something she had never truly experienced before, and sensing its approaching presence honestly frightened her.

As Zephyr approached the front door of the estate, she shook her head and sighed. No... living alone would be a new, interesting experience! Something to enjoy and cherish in that it was another unexplored frontier for her. She knew this, and believed in it and yet... somehow, she could not shake the weight pulling down on her heart. The sensation intensified as she became more aware of it, and the sudden urge to turn around and go home washed over her like a tidal wave. They were still busy packing and getting ready to leave in a few days... but she could still spend time with him. But then, it would be rude to simply leave Caleb hanging, and she still was curious about him. So, she decided to simply stay for a short while. After all, she had already gotten dressed up. Stopping at the door, she took a moment to look over herself... to be honest, her attire was rather lacking in effort. Under her black coat, she had simply thrown on a dark blue gown and wrapped a white dress scarf around her neck. Easy, and decent enough, she supposed. Truthfully she hadn't felt too enthused about having to dress so formally, but then again it wouldn't be the first time she had such sentiments and did so anyway.

With a quiet sigh, she opened the door and stepped inside. She felt her cheeks tingle and warm as the heat and excitement from inside came over her. Looking around, she took off her coat and began to wander through the festivities. While she kept an eye out for anyone else she knew, the woman's main focus was on finding Caleb, of course. He was probably here by now... right? If he wasn't, she supposed she could get something to eat and maybe socialize a bit. Distract herself a little from the things on her mind. But, when Zephyr made her way over towards the night's spread, she saw the blonde man leaning against the wall with a drink. Before approaching him, she stopped and took in a deep breath. After exhaling heavily, an almost frightfully natural smile spread across her lips as she pushed her feelings deep down where they could be ignored for now. There was no need for them to be floating around at the front of her mind right now, after all.

Figuring she was ready enough, she approached Caleb. "I hope finding your business will be a little harder than this," she said, settling on the wall next to him. Zephyr looked over the tables of food nearby before looking up at him, still smiling. "Good evening, Caleb. How nice it is to see you again."

The People: Caleb/Zephyr
The Event: Greeting the Wind

As Caleb rests against the wall sipping at his non-alcoholic drink of the night, the man finds his eyes moving towards the door every couple minutes or so. Muttering quietly to himself over the slight churning in his stomach and the tightness around his throat, the blonde finally leans forward and sets his drink down on a table, eager to do something about the one unpleasantness he can control. A quick tug or two later and Caleb finds his breathing is a bit easier as his tie has now been transferred to the inside pocket of his coat…never did enjoy wearing the damn things anyways. Either look tacky wearing a clip on or get strangled by wearing the real article. The man’s eyes dart about, making sure nobody was paying too much attention to his little dressing down of sorts. Not that he cares either way, but there might be a couple of people that he doesn’t want to think of him as being a tie removing slob. With his breathing returned to normal, the blonde grabs his drink and resumes his nonchalant leaning on the wall.

After a couple minutes pass, the man spots his target out of the corner of his eye. Standing in the entrance is Zephyr, looking quite impressive in her blue gown and white scarf ensemble. Nothing too elaborate, which makes Caleb himself feel better about ditching the tie…but still, the woman is able to pull it off quite well. Clever and beautiful…though to be fair, the blonde did make the little riddle a tad on the easy side to make sure that she would be able to find him. While not getting the best look in the world with it being out of the corner of his eye, Caleb can swear that she seems to look like she is in thought over something…surely not him, the blonde figures. Seems to be more of a saddened look rather than one that screams ‘I really don’t want to be here. Keep that blonde haired bastard away from me.’ Good for Caleb, not so good for Zephyr, it seems. He feels almost compelled to ask her about it whenever she makes her way over to him, but to be fair, with all the partial truths that he told her during their first meeting, he would feel like a bit of a hypocrite for pushing the issue for the time being. Maybe she’ll tell him, or it will come up in conversation, mayhaps. Time will tell.

Figuring that he’ll let the attractive lass find her way over to him, Caleb continues to sip at his drink, acting as if he didn’t see her walk in. If there’s anyone else that she wants to chat with here, no sense in butting in right away, after all. He certainly would be a little irritated if someone tried to cut in on one of his conversations with somebody else, after all. Still watching out of the corner of his eye, he notes that Zephyr has seemed to pick up on his location; the girl apparently going through a tiny bit of an effort to get a happy face on…it isn’t him, he hopes. Doubtful, the blonde figures. After all, if that was the case, odds are that she wouldn’t have bothered showing up at all. As Zephyr approaches him, Caleb turns his head back a couple of degrees to give the impression that he wasn’t waiting for her to show up. No need to come off as a desperate creep who is starving for attention, after all. Sure enough, after a few moments the man finds Zephyr pulling up some wall next to him.

”I hope finding your business will be a little harder than this.

Well, that’s good news, at least. She seems to want to look for Caleb at least. Though, with it a new building and everything that she would probably have to walk by when going to the bazaar for whatever her job is, it probably won’t be too much tougher for an observant person like Zephyr. Could have always built it down a back alley or something, he supposes, but considering some of his wares may eventually be considered necessities for some people, it didn’t seem like too grand of an idea to make it hard to find.

”Good evening, Caleb. How nice it is to see you again.”

Listening to her speech, Zephyr does seem to be honest in her greeting. Well, that’s certainly a relief as well. If his hunch is right, the girl is probably not too terribly fond of the poshness of the event, but came nonetheless to associate herself with him. Somebody going to look for Caleb to associate with him rather than to berate him or force him into doing something that he doesn’t really want to do…the blonde man can’t help but smile at the thought. He can’t remember the last time that has happened. Turning to look down at the woman, the smile is still etched on Caleb’s face.

“Well, good evening, Miss Zephyr! Likewise, I’m glad to see you again too!” Caleb greets, nodding to the girl in acknowledgement. To be clichéd, he supposes that he could have kissed her hand or something of the sort, but he had enough of that when his parents would make him do it to potential girlfriends that they had hand picked. Pity that they all had the personality of a dishcloth and the charisma of the dishwater. Glad that Zephyr seems to have a fair amount of personality and charisma, the blonde continues on.

“So then, how are you doing tonight? And would you care for a drink? The sparkling Cold Duck is pretty good, but I think they got some wine and champagne around if you’re interested in something that actually has alcohol in it. Can’t toast the new year without a glass, after all.”

Hmm... daddy wouldn't be very proud.

Zephyr briefly replayed her entrance and introduction in her mind and could not help but inwardly scold herself. It had been too sloppy, the way she walked in and wandered around, searching. And it wasn't terribly polite of her to make such a remark before giving her salutations to him, either. The fact that she had to put on a happy face in the middle of everything too was also poorly planned out... The woman stroked the bit of the scarf that fell onto her chest, the tiny tremble in her fingers the only apparent sign of her unease. Less-than-satisfactory 'performances' at such formal events had never resulted too well, so many years ago she had tried (and succeeded, or so she thought) to implement it into her first nature. So, failing to meet the usual standards of her facade felt... a little shameful. However, the woman quickly dismissed it, leaving it to be an issue to address later. Just do better from now on, and maybe make this as short as possible, she told herself. Lowering her hand from her scarf, she focused once more as Caleb returned his sentiments and offered her a drink.

She shook her head in response. "No, but thank you very much for offering," she replied. Then, looking up with slightly narrowed, apologetic eyes, her smile shrank slightly as she answered his first question. "Truthfully, I believe I have become ill since our last meeting. I do hope you are doing well, though," Zephyr held her gaze with his, fearing that looking away might clue him into the stretched truth in her words. Though, in a way, she was sick... sort of. Did anxiety count as an ailment of the heart? Regardless... "But I must tell you that I am afraid I cannot stay the full time here. Please accept my deep apologies." The woman dipped her head, a wrinkle of worry appearing across her brow. She did feel bad and a part of her did want to stay the whole time. It was just that, the desire to go home and cherish her time with her friends before their separation. Then, looking forward, she held her hands together in front of her, thinking for a moment. Well, she would stay for a little while at least. She wasn't sure how long, but most probably not until midnight. But, while she was here, she might as well brighten up. After all, it was unfair to Caleb if she was simply a complete damper the whole time she did decide to stay.

Turning her gaze up at him again, she threw on her smile once more, wearing it as naturally as the clothes on her back. "But, it is still within my capacity to stay for a decent amount of time. So, in that time, I would like to enjoy myself with you as much as possible." Her eyes warmed and brightened as she tried to amplify her desire to be here. People! Fun! New friend! Et cetera, she thought in self-motivation. It did seem to work, as the thoughts about Nathaniel and the Aitons slipped further back in her mind. Although they weren't completely out of her head, she was good to focus on her current environment now. Upon studying her surroundings more closely, she quickly caught sight of a large tree and a red balloon by the door. That certainly looked interesting... she was surprised she missed it upon entering. Ohh, she really wanted to go see what it was... but... it was sort of unlady-like to simply drag him off without his consent. So she turned back to him and, tilting her head in inquiry, asked, "What would you be interested in doing first?" Once the words left her mouth, she slowly glanced over at the table before looking back at him. Well... no harm in hinting at what she wanted... "I am personally rather intrigued by the display by the door."

A pause. Then: "But, let us first pursue what you would like to do."

Smiling at the young woman beside him, Caleb can’t help but notice that she seems to be a little disheartened about something. Yes, she said that she had gotten sick, but after a quick look over, the former doctor can say that it doesn’t look like she has any physical maladies of any sort…no, it’s got to be something else. Not his business though, so Caleb opts not to push the issue for the time being. The man does feel a slight bit or relief as well over Zephyr’s proclamation of not being able to stay for the entire time. Over the whole getting out of there early part, not the spending a shortened time with Zephyr part. There’s always another time and another place, after all.

“Ah, that’s quite alright, Miss Zephyr. After all…” Caleb pauses briefly, the smile on his face growing. “…I’m sure that this isn’t going to be the last time we wind up seeing each other, correct?”

”I hope not anyways… Caleb thinks to himself immediately after speaking. Friends…well, they aren’t exactly something that is at a premium for Caleb at the time, him being new to the island and all. So to say that he values the groundwork that has been laid for him and Zephyr is a bit of an understatement. Though the man can’t help but feel a slight bit of sadness at the realization that for as short as the friendship with the girl has been, in all honesty, it’s probably one of the better ones he’s had in all of his life.

”But, it is still within my capacity to stay for a decent amount of time. So, in that time, I would like to enjoy myself with you as much as possible.”

Nodding his head in understanding, Caleb continues to smile at the girl, taking a sip of his drink as he does so. As he watches Zephyr look around, he can’t help but notice the fact that her eyes have practically lit up as she gazes across the room at a red balloon and a fairly large tree…how in the world did he miss that when he walked in? Really sad that he hasn’t noticed it until now too, considering how he had been overhearing people talk about it while waiting for his new friend and all. Something about regrets and things to be proud of? Ha…plenty to regret, maybe one or two things to be proud of. Either way, the blonde doesn’t feel too compelled to participate in the whole thing. But, with the way Zephyr is eyeing the whole display, he feels that he’s going to be finding his way over there sometime before the night comes to a close. Attention turned back to Zephyr, the man watches as she tilts her head and speaks.

”What would you be interested in doing first?” Zephyr asks as she not-so-subtly looks at the whole tree, balloon, and tree ensemble. ”I am personally rather intrigued by the display by the door.”

Of course that would be the first thing that she would come up with. Hmm…well, it seems that it’s a good time for Caleb to think up creative spins on his positive of ‘completing rehab’ and his negative of ‘being fired and disowned by his parents.’ Or maybe she won’t even ask him about putting down his input…with as inquisitive as Zephyr is, fat chance of that happening. Also working against Caleb is the whole fact that the gentleman inside of him is screaming to go over there since that’s what the pretty lady wants. Deciding to go with what his inner gentleman is shouting, Caleb makes his decision, hoping to be able to dance and weave through the whole topic of his past if…bah, when it comes up. She had offered to let Caleb have first choice as far as what he’d like to do for the night, but the gentlemanly voice in him is practically screaming at him at this point to not even think about it. Ah well. May as well get it out of the way. Besides, there’s no rule saying that he has to choose those particular two from his list of the years successes and failures.

“Well, there’s plenty of time tonight, and I couldn’t help but notice you staring down the little display over there, so let’s go and have a little look at that, shall we?”

Caleb nods at the girl and starts making his way over to the table, stopping himself after a couple of steps.

“Oh, and by the way…” The blonde turns around with a grin on his face as he opens up his coat to show Zephyr the tie that he has stashed in the inside pocket. “…it’s okay for you to relax a little, Mi…” Caleb pauses and chuckles, not wanting to be a hypocrite to his own advice. “…Zephyr.”

…I’m sure that this isn’t going to be the last time we wind up seeing each other, correct?”

Zephyr paused for a moment before she gave a small nod, her own smile widening a little. "You are very right," she agreed. Upon hearing these words, the unease at the back of her mind and heart seemed to lighten somewhat. Well... although she would undoubtedly miss her friends and her cousin very much, their leaving would give her the chance to better enrich her relations, such as with Caleb. This meant learning more interesting things, meeting more people, and being able to indulge in more of her 'schemes'. As the realization of these facts became a bit more solid and apparent in her mind, the slight sorrow inside of her subsided further. While it was not completely gone, the bright side of the situation was shining with a growing strength now. After these changes had taken place within her, the smile on her face began to become a genuine reflection of her feelings. Ahh, strange how things can change so quickly, she thought to herself before looking up at Caleb again once he replied:

Well, there’s plenty of time tonight, and I couldn’t help but notice you staring down the little display over there, so let’s go and have a little look at that, shall we?”

Inwardly triumphant, Zephyr promptly followed at Caleb's side once he began making his way towards the aforementioned display. "Thank you," she said, trying not to sound too happy. Her little hint hadn't been quite so subtle, but it worked so she was glad about it regardless. The end justified the means... ahah. Though, it was not like it was anything really bad. After all, er-- oh...? The brown-haired woman stopped walking as her companion did as well. Turning to him, a little confused, she watched as he opened up his coat to reveal a tie on his inside pocket. Glancing up at his neck, she saw nothing. Just as she began to laugh quietly, her soft giggles were cut dead as he told her that, “…it’s okay for you to relax a little, Mi… Zephyr.” The woman merely stared up at him, really unsure of what to say or do. No one at one of these things had ever called her out on her formal manner. Was she... really doing that bad of a job? Her eyes wandered to the side, the smile fading from her face. Or... was it maybe her behaviour the other day that gave away her true nature? Or something else altogether? She really couldn't be sure.

Meeting Caleb's gaze again, the woman then realized that she should be thankful to receive such liberating sympathy. And in any other sort of environment she would undoubtedly jump at the opportunity. But, being in this place filled with suits and gowns and stuff like home, it... it made her feel like her father was around somewhere, keeping an eye on her. Letting her act go while in such a place would - to her - seem similar to worshipping the devil in the basement of a church. As ridiculous as it was, it felt dirty and sneaky. But, then... was Caleb from the same sort of situation? Zephyr bit her bottom lip, studying the blond man, her eyes widened and uncertain. If he had gone through something similar, and he was letting himself relax here then... could it be okay for her to do the same? If she knew him a little better she probably wouldn't have felt so apprehensive, but he was still only an acquaintance.

But, more importantly, she had to remember that - although it might feel otherwise - her father was not here. Nowhere near this place, in fact. And it was her life, where she was now free to do as she pleased. So if she wanted to try relaxing and loosening the act, then damn right she would. Zephyr, with this newfound bout of confidence, smirked up at Caleb. "If you say so, sir," she told him in a hushed voice. Then, in what seemed like an act of proof of her freedom, she unwrapped her scarf from around her shoulders. Rising onto the tips of her toes - though the heels helped too - she draped the material around his neck before opening his coat and reaching into the pocket he showed her. Retrieving the tie, she slung it around her neck and then continued towards the table, without a word. Ha hah! How's that?! ... Truthfully, it was a little unnerving - all the while, she felt as though her father's disapproving voice would come thundering from the heavens - and she wasn't sure why she did it, exactly. But... well, it was a start anyway, right?

Once she found herself at the table, she read the sign. "Ahh... hm." Taking four sheets of paper, she set two aside for herself and placed the remainder next to her for Caleb. Taking a blue pen, she tapped her lip thoughtfully with it. One thing she was proud of... and another she was not. Hm... to be honest, she wasn't really sure. Too many things happened in a year for her to really just pick one. "May... might I... ah." Zephyr cleared her throat, still snagged in her formal speech pattern. Once she had gotten over the hurdle, she asked, "What do you plan to write down...?"

[ooc;; Ouch! >_< Well, I hope you're okay... if it bothers you too much, don't feel obliged to reply right away. I can wait!]

As Caleb watches Zephyr’s reactions following his suggestion to relax, he can’t help but chuckle at the whole display. From the laughter he was garnering from showing her his tie in the coat before, to the mixture of shock, confusion, and maybe even slight embarrassment. He’s definitely got to admit that she does look rather cute as she runs through the various emotions. And on a bright note for him, at least he didn’t receive a pride obliterating backhand for his comment. Wasn’t figuring that he would get hit for it, but considering some of the girls that his parents had him associate with, it’s something that comes to mind. After a few moments, the look of worry disappears into that of a smirk.

”If you say so, sir.”

Being called sir…yeah, Caleb is still chuckling. He thinks about saying something about how his father is ‘sir,’ but doesn’t get the chance as Zephyr removes her scarf from around her neck. Well, with the gown, it isn’t exactly like she has any place to store it, so is she just going to set it down or…OK, maybe not. The blonde can’t help but blush as he finds Zephyr reaching up on her tip toes to wrap the fabric around his neck. Hey, he’s a male and she’s an attractive female. It’s only natural. After giving him a change in neckwear, he is equally amused as the woman reaches into his coat, retrieves his tie, and tosses it around her neck. Well how about that? Caleb realizes that the two probably look a tad on the ridiculous side…but to hell with it. Spending the majority of his life being taught to worry about his appearance…yeah, one night is perfectly fine. Besides, Caleb rather does like the smell of vanilla. Deciding that standing there just smelling his newfound neckwear would make him look as if he would need to be institutionalized, Caleb quickly hurries off after his companion; the feeling of dread gradually growing bigger and bigger as the table gets closer. The negative feeling in his gut only intensifies as the girl sets two of the sheets in front of him.

”May… might I… ah.” Well, watching and listening to Zephyr trying to break habits is certainly a good way to ease his mind Caleb figures. At least until she finally figures what she wants to ask.

”What do you plan to write down…?”

Of course. She just had to ask, didn’t she? Well, he could certainly tell her that it’s none of her business and try to leave it at that, but Caleb figures that if he goes with that route, he will either piss her off, cause her to be all inquisitive, or probably both. The blonde wracks his brain, trying to think of something that isn’t going to make him look like the scum of the earth. Face contorted in thought, the man nods to himself in acknowledgement before looking back up at Zephyr.

“Well now, I suppose that I could say that I haven’t had anything good enough happen to me that’s worth writing on a piece of paper. And I suppose that I can say that the regrets of the past are best left in the past. But then I suppose that if I did that, you would probably think me to be quite a bore. Or really pompous. I don’t think either of us wants that, hmm?” Caleb pauses briefly before continuing on. “But if you must know…the regret for the year is that my relationship with my parents is more or less down the tubes. But on the flip side, I suppose that I’ll put down that I am free to do whatever I please now.”

Caleb manages to put a half smile on his face as he writes down the aforementioned thoughts. While the main ones he would use otherwise would be his drinking wrecking his life and getting sober, the fact that his parents were more or less bastards and that he is free from their hold over him are certainly note worthy enough. The man can only hope that Zephyr wasn’t able to read anything out of the half hearted grin he put on as he wrote down his two things. Hoping to take the pressure off himself just in case, he quickly looks back to the woman, chuckling at the image of her wearing his tie still. Working through the amusing distraction, Caleb speaks again.

“I’m sure that a girl such as interesting as yourself has at least something that she can write down. But, if mine were any help for you, Zephyr, I’m glad. So, what do you think?”

On the side of her worrying and uncertainty, she noted the man's chuckling. Although she was too occupied with her other thoughts to make too much of it, she did briefly wonder what he found so amusing. But once she had replied and he chuckled again, the topic resurfaced. It made her a little uneasy, making someone laugh when she didn't intend to. The thing about such a setting was that it made her feel defensive and paranoid, and caused her to delve a little too deep into most observations. Was he laughing at her? Should she be offended? As she walked towards the table, her eyes shrank into suspicious slits, her smirk diminishing into a disapproving frown. Well... Zephyr glanced at the man out of the corner of her eye. Hrm. He had been kind so far, so she was pretty sure that his amusement hadn't been of the malicious sort. Then again, this sort of environment brought out a different side in her - perhaps it did the same for him? ... Not knowing was seethingly irritating, but... it seemed like asking such a defensive, prickly kind of question would kill the mood. So, upon touching down at their destination, she stowed away her thoughts. Perhaps if it became an issue later she would work it into the conversation somehow.

As Zephyr focused on the little activity placed before her, her composure began to relax somewhat. While she listened to Caleb's answer to her question, she felt her former tension slip away as her intrigue grew. Ah... his parents. Just how bad had their relationship been...? Noting the man's sort of semi-smile, she decided that it was probably far from pretty. Nodding, she turned back to her own papers as he began writing. Biting her lower lip, she thought of her own parents. Could their relationship be seen as 'bad'...? Well, certainly not with her mother - they got along quite well, but then again it was almost impossible for that woman to be disagreeable with anyone. Her father on the other hand... hm, he had been more of a...

Before she could finish the thought, the sound of Caleb's voice yanked her away. "Ah? Hm, well... I have not seen my parents in a while so I'm afraid I cannot say much about them," Zephyr replied slowly, a little unsure. Actually, she probably could say things, but she didn't want to be here all night thinking it over. "But, I do suppose I have some things - although hardly extraordinary - that I can write. So, thank you for your help and thank you for sharing that with me." With a grateful smile, she turned back to the strips of paper before her and began writing. Humming quietly, her neat, flowing script flowed out in blue from the pen in her hand. After completing both, she held them up, reasonably pleased with them. "'I'm proud that I was able to help out at a ranch during the earthquake'," she read aloud, seeing it only fair that she share too, "and, 'I regret being so harsh on my cousin'." While they weren't dramatic or big things, per se, she was sincere about them, especially the latter. Even she had to admit that she sometimes went a little far with Nathaniel... though, it was fun. Really fun. But, still, she...

Just as her mind was about to wander back to the subject of his approaching departure, Zephyr swiftly punched a hole in one of her papers and put the string through it. After hanging that one up on the tree, she placed the other by the balloon with some others and turned back to Caleb. It was just now that she realized how odd wearing a tie with her dress felt. But, looking down at herself, she liked how it looked. It wasn't good, of course, but being able to walk around in such a fashion faux pas at a formal event felt quite satisfying. "You look quite pretty in that," she laughed, tugging on the bottom of her scarf. "And I think I'm quite the dashing fellow in this, would you not agree...?" The woman adjusted it, more for the sake of directing his attention to it than fixing it. Then, rather liking the idea of embracing her masculinity, she went on. "Yes! You may call me" - she paused, thinking of a male version of her name before realizing, stupidly, that her name was actually already masculine - "Sir Zephyr. The Great. And Handsome."

Quite amused by this, she glanced behind her and saw some people dancing in the other room. Turning back to Caleb, seriousness suddenly washed over her expression as she dipped into a bow. While still bent over slightly, she took the man's hand and brought it to her lips. However, she held it a hair's breadth away and looked up at him, unable to keep the smile off her face any longer. Ahah, she was certainly relaxed now. Maybe a little too much. But regardless, she said, "And as Sir Zephyr the Great and Handsome, it is my duty to ask pretty ladies such as yourself to dance." It was only after that she got to this point of her act that her mind caught up to her. Ahah. How impulsive, yet how fun. And also how emasuclating and downright strange this probably was for him.

... Ahh. But, she felt no regret. No, certainly not, this was too fun. Though, Zephyr did feel a little bad for him - after all, he had no idea that the extent of her relaxation would go this far when he told her to loosen up. Actually, even she hadn't either.

Considering this, she thought about straightening up and laughing it off with a cheerful 'just kidding'. But she scrapped the idea as quickly as it had occurred to her. The curiosity - no, need - to see his reaction was just... too much. Too, too much.

I'm the Doctor, I'm worse than anyone's aunt!

Looking around the crowded room, Fred began to feel out of place. He had heard that formal attire was recommended, but not required, so he had gone half way; red long sleeve shirt with black pants and shoes. He had his hair pulled back into a pony tail, several strands falling into his face. But everyone else there seemed to be in tuxedos and gowns. Not to mention all the hustle and bustle was making him a bit claustrophobic.

Not required my ass... Grimacing, he moved away from the door, and pushed his way through the crowd without much politeness to make his way to the food table. This was perhaps the one festival he had gone to without Jim...and he was beginning to regret it. He still wasn't sure how to act around him since he realized he had feelings for his friend, and when Juliet suddenly left shortly after that...well, Fred was a bit jumbled up.

Scratching his scar he starred at all the food, wondering how much he could shove into his shirt before it became to obvious and then make a quick get away. Though it started out as an amusing thought to distract himself from the unpleasant feelings welling up inside him, it was quickly becoming an actual idea. Hm...a whole turkey might be a biiiit much...maybe just a leg or two...

The People: Apparently, it's Sir Zephyr/...Lady Moon? XD
The Event: Role Reversal?

”Ah? Hm, well… I have not seen my parents in a while so I’m afraid I cannot say much about them. But, I do suppose I have some things - although hardly extraordinary - that I can write. So, thank you for your help and thank you for sharing that with me.”

“You’re welcome, Zephyr.” Caleb replies with a smile. “Sorry that it couldn’t have been something a little happier.”

Thinking back to what the brown haired girl had said though, the man can’t help but laugh a little inside, finding it hard to believe that she hasn’t had anything ‘extraordinary’ happen to her in the past year. With her personality, Caleb can’t really see the girl being drab and boring. But, maybe he’s wrong. Wouldn’t be the first time. Listening as Zephyr talks about helping a ranch during an earthquake, the man’s eyebrow arches ever so slightly. A pretty little thing like her helping around a ranch? Definitely interesting enough, at least to Caleb. And as far as her regret of being harsh on her cousin, the man nods in acknowledgement at her statement. With as nice a girl as Zephyr seems to be, he finds it hard to believe that there could be too much cruelty behind it. But still, willing to both help out and to admit one’s shortcomings…impressive.

A clicking sound takes Caleb out of his thoughts for the moment. Turning his head to see Zephyr punching a hole in her good deed paper and hanging it on the tree. Following suit, the man takes care of his small amount of paperwork, being sure to sign both of them. If he’s brave enough to be writing things down for all to see, the least he can do is put his name on them to man up, so to speak. Besides, after looking about, Caleb is pretty sure that Zephyr’s the only one there that knows him, so why should he care what others think? Worrying about others’ opinions is something that can definitely stay in the past. Turning his attention back to Zephyr, he can‘t help but smirk at the girl as she shows off her newfound neckwear. True, she looks a little silly wearing a tie with a dress, but it was her idea, after all. And if it makes her happy, more power to her. Plus, the blonde figures that he looks just as silly wearing a woman’s scarf, so it all balances out.

”You look quite pretty in that.” Zephyr says with a laugh, tugging on the aforementioned scarf ever so slightly. ”And I think I’m quite the dashing fellow in this, would you not agree…?”

Following the girl’s statement, she takes a moment or two fidgeting with the tie around her neck before declaring that Caleb could call her Sir Zephyr. The Great. And Handsome. Well, the declaration certainly does a good job of making the man’s eyebrow raise again. It certainly does have a different sound than the ‘Miss Zephyr’ he was addressing her as before, anyways. The smile on her face is definitely a tell tale sign that the girl is having fun, though. Deciding to see what else the girl has to say, the blonde lets her continue on, the look of amusement still on his face as Zephyr holds his hand to her lips…maybe next time Caleb pulls a joke such as asking for a kiss, he should specify where…

”And as Sir Zephyr the Great and Handsome, it is my duty to ask pretty ladies such as yourself to dance.”

Well, with Zephyr masquerading herself as a male, it is only natural that Caleb himself would eventually become the female through the course of the conversation. But alas, even though it was to be expected, the whole statement still does a good job of throwing Caleb for a loop. Eyes as wide as saucers, the blonde man’s (or woman in this case?) jaw more or less drops as well, as does the nearly empty glass in his hand. Feeling the drinking glass brush up against his thigh as it falls is enough to make the man realize what he just did. Leaning over to grab the glass before it can shatter, Caleb nearly face plants in the process. Leaning back rapidly in hopes of keeping his balance, the idea works for but a split second as Caleb finds himself on the ground in a seated position a few moments later. As the sound of gasps and suppressed laughs fill his ears, the blonde man blushes as he sets the glass down on a nearby table and promptly picks himself up. Noting the strange looks he’s getting, Caleb realizes that a lot of those are probably from people getting the conclusion that him and probably Zephyr are drunk. Makes sense. Girl laughing, guy falling over with a wine glass in his hand, both of them wearing the other’s neckwear…yeah, it’s a look the man has seen many a time from the more sober denizens of Irish pubs. Attention turned back to Zephyr, the man can’t help but laugh at the whole situation as he realizes that it is actually the most fun he’s had in quite some time.

“Well…in that case, how could I refuse an offer from a charmer such as yourself, Ze…my apologies. Sir Zephyr.” Caleb nods as the two make their way to the dance floor. As they continue on their way, the blonde leans over to whisper into the girl’s ear.

“Besides, if we’re going to dance, best that we do it now before they kick us out for looking like drunks, right?”

Sorry that it couldn’t have been something a little happier.”

"The world isn't always a happy place," Zephyr said a little absently, her formal wording beginning to slip now. "Life isn't always a happy thing. So there is no need to apologize; in fact, I would like to thank you for telling me the truth." She tilted her head backwards and to the side slightly, looking up at him rather blankly for a moment before smiling at him. "I do hope you will be able to say some happier things next year, though." Her smile widened as she turned away again.

As their interaction continued, Zephyr found herself quite amused and pleased to see a generally positive expression on her new friend's face. He seemed amused himself for a while, smiling and smirking and raising his eyebrow a little. However, when she extended her invitation for him to dance, the emotion written on his face shifted several gears into what looked confusion or shock. Perhaps (probably?) both. Upon her on features, there lay a faint grin, and anticipation in her eyes as she observed the rather stunned look on Caleb's face, brought together by his wide eyes and open mouth. She would have begun laughing, if she didn't notice the glass falling out of his hand. Since she was a little closer to the ground - still being in a bowing position and all - she reached out to grab it. However, she saw that Caleb was also moving to catch it and stopped herself in order to avoid a clashing of skulls. Still, the young woman's eyes snapped shut, anticipating a shatter. But when she heard nothing, she slowly opened them again. A sigh of relief was breathed when she saw Caleb sitting on the ground, blushing but holding an unbroken glass. Though, her anxiety was not completely gone. In fact, it had intensified. Zephyr, biting her lower lip, glanced around as the sounds of the people around them reacting flooded her ears. As she listened to the quiet laughs and hushed murmurs, part of her wanted to curl up and die - she could already feel her ears burning up. This was negative attention! Really bad stuff - the worst thing she could ever get, and something she hadn't received since she was five. And even then it was cute, being a kid and all. Now that she was in her twenties, this was... it was...

The sound of the man laughing suddenly yanked her back to reality. Zephyr, cheeks flushed slightly, looked up at him, her eyes wavering slightly with confusion. Instead of saying anything about what had just happened, he said: “Well…in that case, how could I refuse an offer from a charmer such as yourself, Ze…my apologies. Sir Zephyr.” At this, she nodded absently, displaying wide eyes and a tiny frown. Really, she was more focused on wondering why he wasn't reflecting the same emotions she was feeling. Wasn't he raised in a similar environment? Hadn't his parents taught him how awful something like this was...? Blinking, still sort of bewildered, she took a second to glance around. The people had gone back to their socializing and eating now, leaving them alone once more. As they moved to the dance floor Zephyr continued to look around, seeming as if she had suddenly been tossed into an entirely new world. Was... everything was all right? No one was whispering or sneering or gossiping as they passed...? I-it was as if that little blunder had never happened...

... And then she realized - feeling like quite the numbskull - that, that was it. It was a little blunder. Miniscule, actually. Nothing to be so worked up about, nothing that would forever cast her into condemnation. Laughing at herself, the woman shook her head. How utterly foolish it was of her to make such a mountain out of a molehill! Caleb had certainly gotten over it in a flash, and he was the real object of everyone else's (brief) attention. So what was she so worried about? Smiling again (though feeling very foolish) Zephyr turned her face slightly towards the man in question as he bent down and whispered to her, “Besides, if we’re going to dance, best that we do it now before they kick us out for looking like drunks, right?”

She gave him a cheerful nod of agreement. When they got to the dance floor, she stopped and turned to him. Fortunately, they had arrived just as the song was coming to a close. Turning to Caleb, she spoke. "Sorry for startling you with such an odd thing," she said, rubbing the side of her neck. There was a small pause before she added, "I must also apologize for standing there like a buffoon as well... I was too busy listening to what I thought was my plummeting - and non-existant - reputation." Zephyr shook her head at herself; she was finding it unusually difficult to really shrug off her foolishness. "Old habits die hard, I suppose..." she mumbled.

Her train of thought switched rails as she heard the beginning notes of the quartet's new song: a bright, but moderately paced waltz. "Anyway, you may be the man again... since I believe I am only able to dance as the woman."

The People: Caleb/Zephyr
The Event: Ruining a black tie affair?
--

After trying to ease the mood with the whole ‘Sir Zephyr’ line, Caleb can’t help but notice that the aforementioned girl wound up with a bit of a frown on her face. Oh, that’s not good. The man can’t help but be confused as to why she’s frowning at his words. After all, she’s the one that started the whole thing. Yes, people are talking and laughing, but for the most part, it seems to have died out over the past few moments. She’s not embarrassed, is she? Caleb thinks about saying something, but actually finds himself at a loss for words. Strange. It’s very unlike him…

Continuing on with the girl, Caleb can’t help but shake the sense of unease that he is feeling in his stomach. With Zephyr being the closest friend he has made on the island thus far, he feels rather bad that he might have helped to contribute to her seemingly less-than-happy mood. Maybe easing up and relaxing was a bad idea? Whispering his little comment about people thinking their drunk, the blonde man hopes to ease some of the tension. Hopes to, anyways, being unsure of how the woman will react. Relieved to see that she is smiling once again, the duo continue on, Zephyr turning to him just as one of the quartet’s songs come to an end.

”Sorry for startling you with such an odd thing.” The brown haired girl replies, pausing briefly before continuing. ”I must also apologize for standing there like a buffoon as well…I was too busy listening to what I thought was my plummeting - and non-existant - reputation. Old habits die hard, I suppose…”

Looking into Zephyr’s eyes, Caleb just smiles back and nods in understanding. After all, ones raised as they were; Zephyr’s last comment all but cementing that as a fact for the blonde, usually don’t act the way that they had a few moments prior. For the time being, Caleb is just relieved that she isn’t mad at him over the whole thing. Chuckling slightly, Caleb moves on to try to comfort Zephyr.

“No worries, Zephyr. I understand all to well how hard some habits can be to break. The reason that it really didn’t bother me back there…is because, well honestly, I’ve stopped caring what people think. My whole life I’ve had things like social standing, proper behavior, and what I couldn’t do being forced on me. One day, I suddenly decided that I’d had enough of it and took a stand.” True, that stand was taking up the bottle, but there’s no need to bring that up yet…if ever. “Being a slave to other people’s opinions is no way to live life. Might not be the most tactful approach, but in my situation, I’ve found it to be the happiest.”

Looking to the musicians as they begin their next song, Caleb nods his head. A waltz…hmm…good enough to dance to. Wrapping an arm around Zephyr’s waist and taking her right hand with his left, the man looks at his partner as she speaks again.

”Anyway, you may be the man again… since I believe I am only able to dance as the woman.”

“Fair enough. You’re definitely the prettier of the two of us.” Caleb responds with a chuckle as the duo begins their dance. Going about their waltz, Caleb can’t help but help as a slight blush stains his cheeks due to the close proximity that he is sharing with Zephyr. Yes, it’s a simple, harmless dance, but still…at least the blonde is taller than her, so maybe she won’t notice. Deciding to get his mind off of the whole mini ordeal, Caleb decides to ask something that he is kind of surprised that the girl hasn’t called him out on yet.

“You know, Zephyr, there is one thing that I’m curious about. When we were at the bar together a few nights ago…just what was that last question you had for me? Be a perfect time to ask, since…” Caleb pauses briefly as he looks at his hand entwined with Zephyr’s. “…well, it doesn’t look like I’m going anywhere for a little while.”

Receiving Caleb's sympathy sent relief washing through her body. The tense tightness in her smile faded away, leaving a natural, happier one in its wake. She nodded as he spoke, agreeing fully with his words. "Hm, well, I believe I am more free here, away from home," Zephyr said. "Like you, I often do not care what people think. I suppose it is just this setting that suspended my usual behaviour and forced an old one upon me." As her words went on, her eyes began to wander away from him. Perhaps I am weaker than I thought, she said silently to herself. And, when she thought about it even briefly, she probably was. This certainly wouldn't be the first time she overestimated herself in her lifetime. But, enough about the past. "It's good to know you have an independent mindset for your life, though," the woman added, grinning wider as she focused her attention more on the present.

Which was a wise decision, as they prepared for the next dance. Zephyr turned her head to the side slightly as Caleb wrapped his hand around her waist. It had been a while since she had danced with a partner; the gesture had taken her off guard, a bit, but she quickly eased back into it. This was, after all, her forte. The remnants of her underlying tension dissolved further as she got a feel for the music. This felt like something more natural... and more fun. Her ease was demonstrated with a light, airy kind of laugh as Caleb told her, “Fair enough. You’re definitely the prettier of the two of us.” Well, not to beat a dead horse, but his hair sort of did give hers a run for its money. But she chose to keep this comment to herself, choosing to merely chuckle softly and shrug a shoulder nonchalantly.

With that, the woman closed her eyes and allowed her feet to whisk her around the room. She counted the beat in her head, the melody floating in and out, keeping her steps in time. Waltzes were pretty easy, or at least to her - the steps were ingrained in her mind, so she didn't really have to think about them at all. Shortly, Zephyr had gotten into the swing of things. Opening her eyes again, she noticed the faint smell of cinnamon and... cigarettes...? The woman angled her face downwards slightly so that she could wrinkle her nose with a bit more subtlety. Truth be told, she could never get used to the smell. It wasn't too strong on Caleb, but she was fairly sensitive to the scent, since it was not something she was accustomed to. Though, on a positive note, the cinnamon was an interesting aroma.

Before she could think over it or move her thoughts onto anything else, the man spoke. “You know, Zephyr, there is one thing that I’m curious about. When we were at the bar together a few nights ago…just what was that last question you had for me? Be a perfect time to ask, since… well, it doesn’t look like I’m going anywhere for a little while.” Turning her face up to him, she cocked her head to the side very slightly, her eyes... looking a tad blank. The woman blinked at Caleb - still dancing easily, as if her feet had a mind of their own - as she thought over this. Er... hm... this was a really good question he had here. However, unfortunately the woman couldn't quite come up with an answer. Quickly, though, she turned her face towards the clock, as if to check the time. Well, while she did partially want to do that, she mostly wanted to hide her blank expression... she hoped that he didn't see it, and wouldn't know that she totally forgot. So, the woman checked the time - 10:26 - and met Caleb's gaze again. The blankness on her face had been replaced by a sly, knowing smile.

"Ahh, but we are already having a conversation through our movements and dance, the language of our bodies," she told him, and this of course was something swiftly BSed, "And this is something I don't wish to interrupt. So I am afraid you will have to wait to know the answer to your question." Arching her brows gently, she smirked even more before closing her eyes once more. Her words weren't complete rubbish, though... dance was an expression in itself, an it did speak a message through movement. So if two people danced together, didn't that mean they were having a silent, physical sort of conversation? ... It made sense to her, anyway...

A short amount of time passed and the waltz finished off on a sweetly harmonized chord. Her eyes opened again, and she stepped away from Caleb, a slight colour in her cheeks. The warmth from all the moving people had kicked up some heat in her - the blonde's close body heat especially. With a small curtsy, she let out a small, light sigh. "Thank you for the lovely dance," she told him. With that, she removed his tie and tucked it back in his jacket where it had previously been. Reaching up again, she tugged her scarf off from around his neck and wrapped it around her own. "I'm sorry to pull a Cinderella, but I think I should go home and rest." Adjusting her scarf, a sincerely apologetic smile came across her face. She was having fun, but... she didn't want to stay out too late. She still did want to spend some time with her loved ones before they left. Though, she did want to come in contact with Caleb again so once she was happy with her scarf, she went on. "I would like to make up for my short time here, though. And... I would enjoy seeing you again. So if you wish, you can leave me a letter - my mailbox is number 10."

Zephyr, out of habit, curtsied again. "Then I wish you a good night, and a very happy new year."

With a wave, she turned to find her coat, before leaving the festivities and the old year behind her. Looking up at the night sky, she sighed, feeling the dull sorrow creeping back. And yet, through the haze of the emotion, she smiled.

Surely, even if it started sadly, the new year would turn out to be a good one in the end. She'd make sure of it.
