A Wedding Cermony

Within the mafia, weddings were sacred ceremonies. It meant a connection, it meant love, but above all else it meant trust. Not just anyone could be married in to the "family". Sure, some of the mafia men married in women that they loved, but the secret always remained. They would celebrate fake holidays with their 'family', never once mentioning the business that they conducted. Every face, voice, smell, and figure was memerized of the women that didn't know, because they never could know. The information was too dangerous... for everyone.

Although sometimes the new wifes knew about the mafia. They knew that their husbands did, knew that the other members of the family weren't directly related, and they could be completely trusted. It all depended on the woman, but everyone knew that in the mafia, trust came well before love. Trust was everything, and that's what brings everyone so close together. That's why everyone is a family, and can never be torn apart like a real biological family.

Out of all these weddings, out of all the trust, and the lies, and the love; there was one wedding that was the most important of all. That would be the wedding of the Boss's daughter. The don, the boss, the big guy, number one... whatever you refered to him as, he was in charge, and his daughter was the most valuable property of the entire Mafia. When the don found out his wife was barren, he did not angry, but instead they adopted a small child and raised her to become part of the family. Her parents awaited the day that she would be married... and it came a lot sooner than they thought.

The don though he'd have to spend a lot more time fending off suiters, and trying to match up a marriage between one of his valued men... but it all happened right before his eyes. Shortly after Alice joined the mafia, she found her true love... and he was one of the best assassin's that the father had.

He quickly approved the marriage.

"You know the dangers, Alice, of marrying such a man," her mother spoke to her in private one day. Long ago, her mother had to consider the same dangers when marrying her father.

"I know mother," Alice replied with a smile. She had been a happy, bright girl once. Willing to do anything for the people she held so closely around her. "But the thing is, whether or not we are married, he still might die one day. I'd rather enjoy marrying him now than regretting it later."

How true those words would ring in the future. Her mother nodded in approval of her fast growing daughter; it was a very mature thing to say at the ripe age of 16.

"You are ready," she told her. But Alice wasn't ready for what the future heald for her. So much trauma... it can perminantly damage the young if not taken care of quickly... it might even harm them.

Alice remembered the wedding day clearly. Her dress was imported from italy; cream with a laced bodice. A princess couldn't have worn it better than Alice did, and she knew it. Her dark hair was up in a simple bun, garnished with fresh blue flowers.

In her bouqeut, the blue feather was tickling the baby's breath. The blue feather that Garrett had proposed with. Nothing in life could be better than this day.

Waiting for the wedding to start sounded like an African drumming concert. Alice's heart pounded faster and faster, then she'd take a deep breath and it would slow down for a split second before climbing right back up to tempo. Finally, the music started. Beyond the doors of the church, her whole family would be waiting. Real family, fake family, extended family, body guards, friends, friends of the "family"... basically everyone she knew and then some.

Her muscles were so tight they could have been played like a violin. It would probably sound like a screeching mess, full of anxiety and excitement, and nerves... but there was no regret. Alice stood before the doors. I know this is right.

The doors opened, and only one thing was there. No family showed up in her memory, only a glimpse of her teary father walking her down the isle. The church was completely empty. There was no music, no peope, no decorations... Just Garrett.

Oh how he could dress up. His tough and gentle body stood before the alter, his nervousness showed just like hers. As soon as they saw each other, all of their tension melted in unison. Garrett smiled.

And Alice cried.

All she remembered was "You may kiss the bride."
