Marlia//August 18//7:00PM Night was on the horizon, but there was still about another half hour of good sunlight left. The air left a chill on anyone's skin, so those who ventured out would be wise to cover up. Inside the glade it was as beautiful as ever, with blossoming flowers, and small animals still rutting around, preparing for the long winter months. They would use all the daylight they had to their advantage. The day had been rather uneventful for Marlia, and she was feeling a little sad. So far she had only met one person, and it wasn't all that eventful. She began to miss her friends back home that had kept her so strong. The island was a pretty big place, and exploring it's grounds was her new option. Maybe I'll run into somebody, or something... how exactly do you meet people? She sighed, feeling a little defeated. A wave of depression was grasping at the cusp of her consciousness, and she tried to shake it away. Not now, it's so beautiful out... And it was true; even the crisp air smelled clean and glorious. There was no reason to be sad in a place like this. Her attention turned to the small animals around her. She saw a rabbit hopping around the glade peacefully, looking for the right piece of grass. Marlia sat at the base of a tree, and searched through the grass herself. She found something that, if she were a rabbit, looked delicious. Holding it out far in front of her, she beckoned the creature towards her. "Here little bunny rabbit... won't you be my friend?" The rabbit looked towards her with general curiosity as to what had made such a noise as the English language. "I won't hurt you," Marlia continued, adding a smile to her voice. Maybe animals could read facial expressions. Surprisingly, the rabbit took a few steps forward.... Marlia's heart raced a little as the small brown fluff ball crept forward. "That's it," she whispered. "I have good grass right here..." As suddenly as a crashing wave, the rabbit's ears perked up. It ran off into the forest without another look at Marlia's delicious grass. She cursed, "Dammit! Everything's just running away from me!" She didn't mean everything, but that's what came out. The rabbit wasn't really running from her, but the feeling of defeat crashed over her once more. I must look ridiculous, trying to feed a rabbit. |

Her first day on this random little island, and she'd managed to get lost. How hard could it have been to follow the road? Tatum decided she'd blame it on the map she had half crumpled in her left hand. Why was everything named after gemstones? This island seemed much different then what was on the paper, almost as if things had shifted since it was made. Some roads it said led into town really led nowhere, and some didn't even exist! "Bodgy piece of crap..." she muttered darkly, unfolding the abused sheet for perhaps the hundredth time that day, hoping (pointlessly, she knew) that she would get her bearings and find her way out of this blasted forest. Dried pine needles crunched under her feet as she fussed with the map, flipping it over and sideways again and again-but it was no use. She was lost. Utterly lost in the middle of nowhere. She glanced around at the peaceful trees surrounding her and let out a weary sigh. It could be worse. Perhaps she should just go to sleep now and try to find her way out in the morning? Tate shifted the suitcase strapped to her back and continued her observations. It seemed like a safe enough place-but she'd rather not sleep out in the open. A clearing would do for tonight, if she could find one. That was when a small brown blur bolted past, throwing up a few dead needles in it's wake-then it was gone amongst the trees. Tate peered in the direction from whence it had came and took a few steps forward. "Dammit! Everything's just running away from me!" The sound of human voice stopped the young woman in her tracks, brow furrowing in surprise - and confusion. "Uh...ey-is anyone there?" She called out, creeping forward until she reached the edge of the trees, where she spotted a girl on the ground. Completely surprised at the sudden appearance of another human after several hours with no contact to anyone, Tate's only action was to lift up the tattered map in a small salute and say, "G'day!" |

Feeling frustration and depression starting to crush her body and mind, Marlia was oblivious to her surroundings until someone crashed into the clearing holding a map and what looked like a suitcase strapped to their back. G'day! Marlia was startled, and jumped about an inch off the ground. Immediately after she felt embarrassed for being sneaked up upon so easily. It could have been something bad, she thought to herself. When in this mood it was hard for her to shrug things off. Marlia realized that she was sort of sitting there and staring, doing nothing. "Oh, uhm I didn't see you there. Hello," she said. A few fireflies had found their way into the brimming darkness now, alighting the seen every once in a while with a few bright flashes as they flew... or fell to the ground. Marlia stood, brushing her short skirt off from the twigs and dirt that stuck there. Marlia usually didn't wear much for clothes for this reason; they always either got dirty, or restricting. Besides, I'm hot, she reminded herself. That lifted her spirits a tiny bit, slowly circling back out of one of her depression. The brightness tinged the side of her eye she normally had, and a little bit of excitement. "My name is Marlia, I see you have a map... are you lost?" |

"Tate." The traveler responded, acknowledging Marlia's greeting with a flickering smile and a bob of the head. She glanced quickly at the battered sheet of paper in her hand before folding it up and stuffing it in her back pocket. Her face took on a sort of sheepish look - she didn't want to admit she was lost, but she wasn't much one for lying. At least not about something so small and insignificant. "Aha..." Tatum scratched the back of her head while trying to grin away the embarrassment - "Maybe just a little - the map, see it-" fumbling a little, she pulled it back out of her pocket and held it out to the girl in front of her. "it isn't quite right." She was a little nervous, being lost and all, and meeting someone new so unexpectedly in the middle of a forest didn't help. As a result she was stumbling a little over her words and couldn't really gain control of her fingertips. Tatum pointed to certain roads and mentioned that they led to nowhere, it seemed; "Quite suddenly, ya know, like someone just slapped some dirt over it." And some that didn't exist at all; "When I got there wasn't nothin but a pile of rocks! S'not worth a zack I say." She wasn't outright asking for help, simply explaining the situation, presuming that as any good person might, Marlia might show her the way, or at least set her on the right course. "By the way..." Tatum murmured in her twanging accent "What're you doin out here so late? Out for a stroll, haha?" |

Marlia smiled, nodding at the girl's embarrassment. It was alright to be lost; the island was a pretty big place. Fortunately, Marlia had an excellent sense of direction, and didn't mind getting a little lost now and then. She looked at the map in the girls hands. "I think you're holding it the wrong way..." she said quietly and kindly. She picked up the map and turned it to the correct direction before handing it back. "When I got there wasn't nothin but a pile of rocks! S'not worth a zack I say." Marlia giggled a little, politely hiding her mouth behind her hands, at both the accent and the fact the roads led to nowhere. The island could be a little complicated... and wasn't there an earthquake or something? "It's almost like the island is always under construction, always changing. You're going to just have to learn where everything is, and not rely on the map. It's more use for getting lost than getting found." Now it was getting much darker, and more fireflies had shown up. It was a gorgeous glade overall, and Marlia might have stayed a little longer, but she should help this girl get back. "By the way..." Tatum murmured in her twanging accent "What're you doin out here so late? Out for a stroll, haha?" Marlia grinned. "I'm new here too, actually, and I was just out looking for some friends or a nice place to sit for a while. I live on the north half of the island, and I hadn't come down this far yet. It's pretty nice though." "So, where are you trying to go? I can take you there if you want," Marlia offered. "It would be no trouble, Tate. Besides, I'd like to get to know you more if you're going to be around for a while." |
