I'm the Doctor, I'm worse than anyone's aunt!

"Are you sure you're alright with such a small party, Rosie?" The baby faced Kathryn glanced at her friend with furrowed brows. "I mean, it is your fifteenth birthday. It won't be long before you'll be able to start dating." As she spoke, the large girl reached for another tea cake, gingerly stuffing it into her mouth.
"Ah...dating..." Julia, who sat beside Kathryn swooned. "Speaking of which, who do you suppose will ask you first? Duke Debury, or Lord Matthre's son? They both fancy you, Rosie!"
Rolling her eyes, the birthday girl smiled lightly at her friends' twittering. "First off, I'm barely used to being fifteen without worrying about awkward car rides and kisses." After sipping some tea, she continued, "And second, Julia, I have barely spoken to those men! They only take notice of me because of two things."
"....what two things?"
Rose peered over her cup at the two girls. After a moment, both seemed to jump at the same time and glance away in embarrassment.
Laughing, Rose nudged the fourth girl that sat beside her. "Poor things, I feel I've ruined their view of men!" The girl she had nudged, Mary, smiled lightly.
"Rose, you could ruin the Pope's view of God."
With another roll of her eyes, Rose continued on with the conversation, "In all honesty I don't even think I want to get married." Kathryn and Julia let out loud gasps, whilst Mary sipped her tea with obvious amusement.
"Rosie, why wouldn't you want to be married? To be joined in holy matrimony with a handsome man and have children and-" Rose stopped Kathryn's rant with a hand.
"That is exactly the point. It all seems so...so unnecessary. If I find someone I love, why would we need a ceremony to prove to the world what we already know?"
Mary chuckled. "But I am sure your mother wouldn't approved."
She sighed. "No she wouldn't, the poor woman. So I suppose at some point I'll get hitched."
"Or rise up in society becoming the most eligible woman in London, leaving heart broken men in your wake." Mary added with a smile.
"Until some rich ruffian won your heart..." Kathryn stated dreamily, to which Julia added, "And carried you off into the sunset!" Rose laughed, almost spilling her drink. "Oh one can only hope it turns out that way."

There was a sharp knock on the door, quickly answered by Rose's mother, Elizabeth. As she bustled to the door, she called out to her daughter, "This must be your aunt! She said she would be stopping by-" However, as she opened the door, Elizabeth was not greeted by her sister. Instead and aged, uniformed man of the military stood somberly before her. Behind him were a few other men, who held a stretcher between them.
"Mrs. Thomas?"
Her smile remained plastered on her face, eyes blinking in confusion. "Yes, I am she. May I help you?"
The man took off his hat, and gazed at the woman with empathetic eyes. "Madam, I am here to inform you of your son, Alec Thomas-"
"Oh yes! Is he alright? Or is he coming hom early? Perhaps awarded a medal? He always was a very studious boy, brave too!"
As her mother prattled on, Rose stood and walked toward the doorway, her friends only watching with wide eyes.
"Mother, let the man speak." The old officer glanced at Rose, his face drooping even more before returning to Mrs. thomas. "Madam, I believe your husband is needed here as well."
She blinked as he spoke, but turned around and motioned to a passing maid, "Be a dear and retrieve Mr. Thomas will you?" The maid nodded and hurried off, leaving a tense silence in the air.
"Well until my husband comes would you like some tea?"
"No, Madam, but thank you."
"Oh come come now!"
As her mother chattered, Rose felt a heavy pit growing in her stomach; something was terribly wrong. Hesitantly, she let her eyes wander to the men behind the old militant. They carried a stretcher, and on it was...
"I am Mr. Thomas. What is this all about?" Rose turned as her father walked in. Usually his presence calmed her, but now it seemed only to increase her anxiety. The aged messenger also seemed to grow more uncomfortable. "Mr. Thomas, there is no easy way to say this. Your son, Alec, was shot several times in the battle field." Rose felt her whole body go numb, and could only stare as the man continued. "He was attempting to rescue his comrades who had been captured by the enemy."
Slowly, Rose dared to glance at her parents; her mother's expression remained frozen, but her face was white, whilst her father had grown incredibly still. Finally, Elizabeth said quietly, "Is...is he alright? Is he...coming back to us? We've...we've all missed him, especially out daughter, Rose. They are so close. I'm sure...she'll take good care of him..."
The man's face became more sorrowful, if it was possible. "Madam, he has come back to you...but not in the way you want him to."

With sudden urgency, Rose pushed passed the speaker and went straight for the stretcher.
"Miss!!! Don't!!!"
"Rosie!!!"
She didn't listen, and as she reached the cargo the men held, ripped off the cloth that shielded her brother from the world. Rose thought she heard her mother scream, and the sudden buzz of activity as everyone in the household hurried to see what happened. But she didn't care; she couldn't. Her eyes were saucers as she stared at Alec's face. He could have been sleeping, except for how blue, and bloated he was. She searched his features for something, anything.
"...Alec." she whispered. "Alec." her voice grew steadily louder. "Alec. Alec! ALEC! ALEC!!!" The poor men holding her brother could do nothing without dropping him and were forced to watch as the girl broke into hysterics.
"GET UP!! OH GOD PLEASE GET UP!!!" Without thinking she reached out and shook him, causing he bearers to stumble. "Please, Miss! Don't!!"
"ALEC!!! WAKE UP ALEC!!! STOP PLAYING!!! THIS ISN'T FUNNY!!! OH GOD GET UP PLEASE!!!" Suddenly, Rose felt herself being pulled away from her brother by several hands, and she fought them fiercely still screaming. "ALEC GET UP!!! OH GOD PLEASE!!! HE'S DEAD HE'S DEAD!!! ALEC!!!"

Her friend's arms were wrapped around her tightly as they pried her from Alec's side, each of them sobbing. But it was Mary who did what she could to control the uncontrollable situation. "Calm down, Rose! Please, please Rose! You have to stay with us." But their broken hearted friend continued to wail, even as they dragged her kicking and scratching back into the house, away from curious eyes. Forming a circle, the three friends held on tightly to Rose, forcing her to the ground as they continued to hold her. Slowly, her cries and screams quieted to endless sobbing, though it was no less heart wrenching. Through her tears, Mary held Rose's head to her chest whispering, "You don't have to be strong, Rose. You don't have to be strong..."
Several, long moments lasted like this, before Rose pulled her self from their grasp, and stared at them with red eyes, tears still pouring from them.
"...I....I have to be....strong."
"No...no Rosie you don't. We....we'll take care of you."
Before she could answer, a young boy about thirteen stumbled down the stairs, holding the hand of a toddler. "....R-rosie..? What...what's going on?" The boy's eyes stared, frightened at the chaos he had found.
Looking back at her three friends, and standing, Rose wiped her eyes. "Yes, but who will take care of them?"
