I'm the Doctor, I'm worse than anyone's aunt!

Summer 3, year 6
11:46 am

In the grass, near a large area of flowers, a purple blanket had been laid with a basket in it's far corner. Beside it sat Melody in a large straw hat to shade her eyes and a blue sun dress. She had her sketchbook resting on her knees, and was sketching the nearby flora. On the opposite end was Blaze, leaning back on her hands, a pair of thick black sunglasses on her face, blue stripped tank top and black capris with sandals as her choice of clothing. Though it was impossible to tell, she was watching the third member of their group, Preston, as he nervously packed and unpacked the food. Sighing irritably she grumbled, "Would you stop that, Preston? You're making me nervous."

Jumping slightly at his sister's voice he almost dropped the potato salad. Laughing nervously he tucked it back in the basket. "Oh...sorry, Blaze. I just don't know what to do! I can't believe I actually invited Madeline...oh my goodness I've only met her once!" Blaze looked away and scowled. "I don't know why you invited some strange girl either; we have fun without anyone else around."

Melody glanced up from her sketching and smiled kindly at her brother. "Don't worry, it will be a lovely time. And you invited her because she was nice and you liked her." She giggled and patted his arm. "You haven't shut up about her since then!" Giving Blaze a quick glare before looking back at her art she added, "And it wouldn't kill us to meet some other people, sister."

Blaze rolled her eyes and laid back, resting her hands on her head. "...it might."

"Thank you for inviting me!"<br>
{excited, but nervous.}

<br><br>

Triplets! She still couldn’t quite believe it. She had heard that twins were close to one another, closer than a normal brother and sister, and she wondered if it were the same for Preston and his two sisters. She had gotten the brief impression that day that it was. The thought made her both excited and nervous to meet his sisters today. Truthfully, she had been rather surprised that he’d invited her to a picnic at all. Their meeting had been short, too short she had felt, and even though she would have loved to spend more time with him she had been too busy with the festival preparations.
<br><br>
Oh, but how excited she had been when she had gotten his letter! And after the official shock, she had been rather warmed at the fact that he’d taken to heart their conversation that day, and her enthusiasm, and had invited her to come meet his sisters.
<br><br>
Madeline had left her hair down today, as she did on many days, even despite the summer season and the fact that it got quite hot later on in the day. She dressed it up in pastel blue and pink flower clips, which helped keep her bangs out of her eyes and tucked beneath her ears. Accompanying that was a simple white baby doll dress which hung loosely on her and ended with light blue trimming---the same trimming that made up the collar and straps---just below her knees.
<br><br>
Unmei Gardens was beautiful, flowerbeds greeting her in multiple varieties as she finally entered and scanned the area for the Sweets family. It didn’t take her long to spot the three blue heads further down in the gardens, and Madeline quickly hurried toward them.
<br><br>
“Good afternoon,” She greeted with a friendly smile, but inwardly cringed at the stupid greeting. That was the best she could come up with? She was really rusty with this, it would seem!

Stumbling up, Preston smiled sheepishly as Madeline came towards them. "G-good afternoon!" Ah bugger why couldn't I think of something else?? As he gazed at her, his smile broadened; she looked really pretty today. Perhaps it was her hair? Suddenly realizing he was just staring he went red and glanced at his sisters. "Oh! Um...Madeline, this is Melody and Blaze."

Standing up, Melody adjusted her hat and smiled at the new comer, walking towards her. "It's so nice to meet you! Preston's never invited someone to come out with us before. How exciting!" Even though she wasn't use to the 'hostess' role, between her brother and Blaze, she knew she would probably be the one leading most of the conversation. Glancing at the eldest sister, she nudged her with her foot. "Blaze, Preston's friend is here."

With a sigh, Blaze stood up slowly and looked down at the girl through her thick glasses; it was probably best that you couldn't see her eyes through the black lenses. She examined the girl head to toe with piercing scrutiny; she had dressed cute, and looked almost like a child. Glancing at Preston then at the girl again she nodded. "Blaze."

Watching his sister anxiously, Preston sighed, relived when she said her name; she wasn't going to protest her being there. Looking at Madeline, he motioned for her to sit down, tugged on his red button up. Blushing he muttered,"You...look really pretty...Madeline."

"I, um, er..."<br>
{nervous.}

<br><br>

Preston was the first to greet her, returning her own greeting, although with a slight stammer. Madeline gave him her natural friendly smile, and then turned her attention to his two sisters as he proceeded to introduce them as Melody and Blaze. Instantly, she remembered the picture he had showed her and easily matched them up, even despite their hair color change.
<br><br>
The sweeter looking of the two young woman stood up immediately to greet her, and Madeline was quite pleasantly surprised to realize that Melody was particularly close to her own height, although still standing a couple inches above her. “It’s so nice to meet you! Preston’s never invited someone to come out with us before. How exciting!”
<br><br>
Madeline remained silent as she took in that fact, feeling a small glimmer of hope and excitement bloom in her as well. She wondered if they all had similar personalities, despite the fact that they were not identical. Preston appeared to be timid, but Melody appeared to be very friendly.
<br><br>
But then she came face to face with Blaze, who appeared to be far more…authoritative than the other two. And not nearly as friendly, it would seem. Madeline felt quite self-conscious underneath the lengthy glance over the woman was giving her. But after a moment, she finally gave a curt nod and introduced herself.
<br><br>
She was almost afraid to look away, but managed to draw her gaze away from the intimidating woman when Preston motioned for her to take a seat. Hesitantly, she did so and took her seat next to Preston, just in time to look up and see him blushing.
<br><br>
“You… look really pretty… Madeline.”
<br><br>
“Oh, thank you very much,” She replied nervously, although tried to keep that nervousness out of her voice. Folding her hands neatly in her lap, she kept her gaze on Preston for a prolonged moment, a smile frozen on her lips.
<br><br>
Try as she might, she couldn’t shake the nervousness!

As everyone sat down, an awkward silence fell over the four. Preston was at a loss of what to say, his mind drawing a total blank. Well, not a total blank, but all he could think of were quotes from books and he doubted that would be much help. Especially weird ones from The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo.

Melody, having prepared for this, cleared her throat and smiled at Madeline. "So, Preston tells us that you're from Scotland? I've heard it's a simply lovely place...I bet it's a great place to sketch..." Trailing off, she went into her own fantasy of being able to draw the rolling hills and the scenery of Scotland.

Quickly taking over the baton his sister had passed him, he nodded with a smile. "Ah yeah. My sister is a rather avid artist, mostly drawings. Sometimes paintings, when we can get the supplies. Just thinking about drawing causes her to zone out." Yes! I could talk about my sisters all night and day. Perfect! Pausing, he blushed lightly, suddenly realizing that he hadn't given Madeline much room to talk. "Oh...um...w-what hobbies do you have?"

As these exchages occured, Blaze watched , sitting opposite of Preston, beside Melody. They seemed to be trying to entertain the girl, which Blaze had no idea why. What was she to them? But, Preston seemed to like her well enough...and though that bothered Blaze to no end, she would be on her best behavior. Until this girl gives me a reason not to be. A reason she now searched for intently.

"How wonderful!"<br>
{passionate.}

<br><br>

The awkward silence stretched between the four of them as they all sat on the picnic blanket, apparently at a loss of what to say or do. Never had she imagined anything could be so…estranged. Madeline could truthfully say she wasn’t used to such moods. Back home in the small town she came from, everyone knew everyone and there was never a day that stretched on in tense, awkward silence because a group of strangers were unsure of how to become acquainted.
<br><br>
Instead, with her father’s very animated personality and her mother’s friendly socialism, a problem such as this had never presented itself. From as far back as she could remember, she had always had her best friend Heather at her side and entire town she’d known for her entire life. Literally. It was so strange, but she had somehow overlooked such a huge pleasure of her life.
<br><br>
She had left her town, her parents, and all of her friendly neighbors in order to journey the world and find a place more fitting for her. She had left because she’d been under the impression that her town was too small and too boring. But now, suddenly, she felt a strong surge of sadness at her own previous thoughts. Because she realized that was one of the things she had loved about the town, yet she had somehow overlooked it and underestimated its importance.
<br><br>
“…you’re from Scotland?” Melody’s soft voice finally penetrated through Madeline’s thoughts, causing her to come to with a slight start, her violet eyes immediately drawing toward the woman. “I’ve heard it’s a simply lovely place…I bet it’s a great place to sketch…”
<br><br>
She had seen that look before, on her own mother. And she also knew it was the same look that came over her whenever she lost herself to the passion of painting. It was only then that she finally realized the sketchbook in the young woman’s lap, and silently assumed that she was an artist herself.
<br><br>
Preston quickly confirmed her silent observation. “Ah yeah. My sister is a rather avid artist, mostly drawings. Sometimes paintings, when we can get supplies. Just thinking about drawing causes her to zone out.”
<br><br>
How wonderful! Her mind immediately exclaimed with pulsing enthusiasm. It showed by the way her face immediately lit up at the mention of Melody being an artist herself. She would have eventually commented on it, after her initial shock and excitement, however Preston forged on and asked what her own hobbies were. Which was, all in all, still a great opening.
<br><br>
“Actually, I’m a painter myself,” She confided. “Though, I paint fantasy… or what I like to call my very own personal fairytales. Most of my paintings center around a Prince and Princess or a lovely castle, maybe even a dragon in the sky. Each painting has a story to it, as well.”
<br><br>
She sighed happily, obviously wanting to ramble on for hours about her passion but was somehow able to quench the impulse.

Both Preston and Melody's faces perked up as Madeline spoke, though for different reasons. Both leaning forward, they spoke at the same time rapidly,
"Fantasy? That's my favorite, I bet you do great drawings-"
"You're an artist too?? How marvelous! We shall have to compare-"
Stopping, they looked at each other and both blushed.
"Ah...you go first, Mel."
"No..no you can, Preston! She's your guest."
"But you're both artists, so you'll have more to talk-"

Blaze's gruff voice cut in, "Preston, you first. Then Mel." So she was an artist and drew fantasy? She was a two for one deal, wrapped up in a cute little package. Blaze hated it.

Seemingly unaffected by his sister's harsh tone he nodded smiling and looked at Madeline, "I was just going to say that I love anything fantasy. And that I bet you do great pictures." Nodding he smiled enthusiastically, "I hope I can see some of them." Looking at Melody, he patted her hand, "Your turn!"

Though both Melody and her brother were used to Blaze's attitude, Melody gave her sister a small glare. We have a guest, and we like her, so at least try to be nice! Feeling Preston's touch she looked at him with a giggle, "Thanks." Turning her blue eyes back to Madeline, she tightened her grip on her sketchbook excitedly, "I haven't met another artist in a while, so it will be fun to have someone to talk to!" She ignored Blaze's scoff and continued on with a smile, "We'll have to compare techniques; I'm not very good with painting I'm afraid."

"No she's not, she's too modest!" Preston chuckled, beaming proudly at his sister; it was so wonderful being able to talk like this! Now if only the eldest of the three would join in...

Madeline was swiftly bombarded by two intrigued people as they leaned forward and made comments of their own at the very same time. It was definitely enough of a distraction to swiftly yank her out of her whirl winding thoughts. Turning her gaze toward Preston and Melody, she watched as they began encouraging the other to go first. Madeline couldn’t keep down the smile, finding it rather refreshing to see such enthusiasm over painting.
<br><br>
The older sister, Blaze, promptly cut in and used the authority Madeline had sensed from the very start, telling Preston to speak his mind first and then Melody could go second. She noticed that Preston seemed completely unaffected by Blaze’s command, making her wonder if the woman really was always in such a state. When Preston went on to tell her that he loved fantasy, her mind refocused on him instead of his sister, and she could feel her own excitement beginning to brew as she glimpsed a real genuine interest in Preston, toward her paintings.
<br><br>
“I haven’t met another artist in a while,” Melody began to say when her brother told her it was her turn. “So it will be fun to have someone to talk to! We‘ll have to compare techniques; I‘m not very good with painting I‘m afraid.”
<br><br>
Preston immediately, and passionately, denied as much, telling Madeline that his sister was far too modest.
<br><br>
“I would love for us to share our artwork with one another,” She replied and then added, “My mother is an artist as well, though she’s far more talented than me. She can both paint and draw, but her passion seems to be sculpting.
<br><br>
“Though I may get my ability from her, I certainly don’t get my techniques from her! She loves art studios and the closed, quiet space where she can be alone. Oh, but I cannot work in such places! I realized rather quickly that I get my inspiration from my surroundings, and so that often results in me carrying my supplies everywhere I go.”
She jabbered on, becoming the chatter bug she was whenever her passion came up into a conversation.

Melody's smile broadened as she listened to Madeline speak of her mother and how she had to be outside to do her artwork It must have been wonderful to have another artist in the house... she thought dreamily. Though she was already passionate about her artwork, Madeline's shared enthusiasm made her almost giddy! "Personally, it just depends on my mood, where I want to be. Sometimes I just want to do it alone, and other times I can hardly stand being indoor!" Giggling lightly, she patted her sketchbook affectionately, "Even though we've barely met, you should definitely bring your artwork next time we meet."

Watching the two go on about their art, Preston felt dazzled by them; mostly Madeline. He was used to his sister's excitement, but Madeline...well, she seemed to glow, looking even more like a princess. Such a strange thing, since she didn't look any different from before. Finding himself unable to stop looking, he gazed at the girl, a small smile on his face. ...I'm glad I invited her.

Blaze felt differently. The more Madeline spoke, the more Blaze decidedly didn't like her. If she had been chatting it up with someone else's sister or was unconsciously ensnaring someone else's brother, Blaze would have cared less. Might have even found her pleasant. But, she was there, on their blanket, interacting with her siblings. Leaning forward she put herself between Preston and Madeline, bumping into her unapologetically as she grabbed the basket and pulled it towards her. Setting it down, she no longer blocked Preston's view, but was considerably closer to the 'action.' "We should eat before the food goes bad."

Madeline was rather astounded, but in a good way. She was beside herself with amazement as she listened to Melody share her own preference and then invited her to share artwork the next time they met. Apparently, she was fitting in very nicely, and a look in Preston’s direction told her that he was rather happy as well. Though, the small peek in his direction wasn’t long enough for her to realize that he was staring at her, and had been, for quite some time.
<br><br>
When the oldest of the three siblings abruptly pushed herself between Preston and herself, Madeline felt a race of anticipation spike up from the very gut of her belly. She wasn’t sure exactly what it was about the eldest, but there was definitely something intimidating there. Madeline immediately placed both of her hands in her lap and attempted to perfect the manners that had been taught to her a small handful of times many years ago. Unfortunately, she couldn’t really remember what those manners were, other than sitting straight and folding your hands in your lap and your legs underneath you.
<br><br>
“We should eat before the food goes bad,” Blaze interrupted as she pulled the basket of food toward her to indicate it was time to eat.
<br><br>
Madeline was too nervous to agree, and felt as though she’d be reprimanded if she were to speak out of line.

Silently, Blaze began to pull the food out of the basket; sandwiches, potato salad, various drinks, chips, and some sort of pastries. Setting the basket aside, she glanced at Madeline. "Pick your poison." Ah, sitting like a little lady....how quaint.

A bit surprised at the abrupt change in conversation, he looked at his elder sister in slight confusion. Shaking his head, clearing it of the weird feelings, he smiled brightly at Madeline, "We have tuna, PB & J, ham, turkey, and vegetable sandwiches. You get first pick since you're our guest~!" Looking at the drinks he frowned a bit. "Unfortunately...our drink selection is only water and tea..."

Melody knew what Blaze was doing as soon as she had bumped into Madeline. Sighing a bit she shifted. Glancing at their guest she smiled weakly, placing a hand on her shoulder; she looked like a girl in detention. "It's alright...Blaze is all bark, so there's no reason to be so nervous." Okay so she has a lot of bite to go with the bark, but she won't do anything so soon and certainly to a sweet girl like Madeline.

Madeline didn’t quite understand the situation, or why the eldest sister of the three triplets seemed to be rather harsh in both nature and tone. Though, if she did not know better, she would actually think that the woman disliked her. Still, she wasn’t one to look down on herself in such a way, and couldn’t believe that she had actually done something to give that impression, and so clutched onto the assumption that the eldest sister merely acted such a way toward everyone.
<br><br>
Which, truthfully, be believed was the truth since both her younger sister and brother appeared to be quite calm and unfazed by Blaze. She tried to rationalize the situation as she sat there and watched the woman sort everything out before them, and she came up with the idea that she should probably avoid trying to question her and merely focus her attention on the other two. At least that way she would be avoiding any potential danger of verbal abuse. At least, she hoped so.
<br><br>
“Pick your poison,” Blaze offered, and Madeline could feel her sharp gaze like a knife grazing against her cheek. Swallowing, she offered an unsure smile in the woman’s direction regardless of the frigid air between them, and began to glance at what had been lain out.
<br><br>
Preston was quick to speak up, in what she believed to be an attempt to lighten the mood. He focused his attention on her and quickly began showing her what all they had brought to the picnic today.
<br><br>
“Thank you,” she murmured with a flash of a smile in Preston’s direction, and then she picked out a turkey sandwich, some chips, and a drink of tea.
<br><br>
Though, her rigidity must have given her away because Melody placed a hand on her shoulder and reassured her that Blaze was all bark, and there was really no reason at all to be so nervous. Madeline smiled her thanks in response, but still wondered how she was supposed to pull that off when Blaze’s dark glare was as cold as a glacier, and mood as thick as the morning fog of a low laying cloud.
<br><br>
“Do you have family picnics often?” She asked, deciding that she rather ask the first thing that came to mind rather than sit there in a silence that was likely able to swallow her whole.

Reaching for the ham sandwich, Preston shook his head lightly, "When the weather's nice...though we usually just eat out." Glancing at Madeline, he noticed how nervous she was. Ah...must be Blaze...she is a bit intimidating at first. Smiling reassuringly, he added, "But it is nice to have a new face in the mix, especially one as pretty as yours." He was of course being honest, not fully realizing what he had said.

Blaze bit loudly into a chip, certainly not liking where the conversation was going. Glancing at Madeline, she pushed her sunglasses up on top of her head. ..feh. She's cute at best. Turning her icy eyes back to her meal she took the tuna sandwich for herself, obviously irritated about something.

Melody watched both of her siblings, and sighed. One was totally oblivious and the other was far too in tuned with everything around her. Patting Madeline's shoulder, she reached for a tea. "We're not used to having someone else in the mix, so...please forgive any of strange behaviors." Maybe this will give Blaze some freeway...Preston too if he starts realizing the words coming out of his mouth. Perhaps it was Madeline's nervousness or her sibling's behavior, but Melody had found herself in the 'leadership' role. Normally she would incredibly shy, but she felt like she needed to protect the blonde girl sitting next to her. Poor thing..youve entered into the Bermuda Triangle...and you don't even know it.

<br><br>

Madeline blushed at his comment, becoming aware of the fact that Preston often complimented her on her looks. Even back during their first meeting, she had noticed the same thing. Before she could respond, she heard a loud and ominous crunch beside her. Stiffening her back, she instead focused her attention on her sandwich and began to take a bite, knowing full well that if she were to glance in the woman’s way she would come face to face with the woman.
<br><br>
Ah! Why was their sister focusing all of her attention on her!? She wanted desperately to squirm and protest, and to move away until she was in a much more comfortable spot, but she knew that would be the least wise thing to do. Still, she couldn’t understand why this woman wanted to intimidate her so badly!
<br><br>
But, at least Melody, Preston’s other sister, was as kind as he was, and far more calm. She had already given her quite a bit of reassurance, and Madeline was very grateful for that. It would have been a terrible day if both sisters had ganged up on her, deciding they didn’t like her… for whatever reason it was Blaze seemingly did not.
<br><br>
Though, she was loathe to give up and cower! And she had certainly been sitting around in nervous silence long enough, hadn’t she? How was she to expect her lovely prince charming to come and find her one day, sweep her off her feet, and marry her if she couldn’t face a single little problem in her life?
<br><br>
At the thought, Madeline took in a very deep and calming breath before smiling brightly at both Melody and Preston, deciding to ignore Blaze completely. “It’s been quite a while since my family and I have gone out to a picnic,” She told then enthusiastically, as she remembered the last time they had. “Though, that is merely due to the fact that my mother is currently back in Scotland while my father is here and Papa would be loathe to have a family picnic without the entire family, including our Hercules since that is, after all, his most favorite beast in the world.”
<br><br>
Madeline came to a stop, and felt sort of surprised. Wow, when determination and nervousness combined she seemed to just go off on a subject and not know when to conclude it.

Preston smiled a bit. "Your father must love your mother very much, to want to want to wait." He could barely remember the last time he had seen his parents. ...last Christmas? After moving out, they didn't really visit much. Not that didn't love them...There's just no need. Frowning a bit, he glanced at Madeline. She's very lucky... His smile returning, he took a bite of his sandwhich.

Begrudingly, Blaze acknowledged silently that she understood the girl's father's feelings. She hated going anywhere or doing anything unless her siblings were there. It just wasn't complete without the other two. Grunting she muttered, "Your father sounds kind." I can appreciate a man who puts family above all else.

Smiling, Melody sipped some of her drink. "Well, I hope your mother comes soon so you and your whole family can have wonderful picnics together. Including Hercules." Giggling she opened a bag of chips. "What kind of pet is he?"
