[dohtml]

[align=right]spring 31st
6:29 am
slightly chilly with a light breeze[/align]
The pale light of dawn shone over the horizon, casting a romantic atmosphere over Sapphire Glade. The tall grass sparkled with dew as it swayed back and forth in the breeze. The flowers also joined in the dance, vibrant colors turned pastel, their ambrosial perfumes floating on the air. Perhaps the only thing that broke up the setting was the occasional bark of a large black dog as it bounded through the grass, chasing after butterflies. The owner of the dog was there as well, though one would have to look to find her, as she was laying quietly in the grass, hands behind her head as she watched a few puffy clouds scoot by.

The skirt of her pale green dress was tugged at by the breeze as well, mimicking the grass that provided her with a soft place to lay. The edges of her lips were curled up with a small smile as she breathed in and out deeply. She had been meaning to sleep late, as today was her last lazy day before summer, and work at the farm, started up. Still, she had awoken close to a quarter 'till six and was unable to get back to sleep. She had crawled out of bed, thrown on a dress, brushed her hair and applied a little bit of lip gloss. After throwing the windows open, letting in the early morning birdsong, she ate a quick breakfast and left the house, ready to take a self-guided tour of the island.

But when she arrived at the glade, she had the feeling she might be staying there for most of the day. She even considered the possibility of leaving in an hour and bringing back a picnic lunch and a good book or two to pass the time. For now, however, she was content to lay back and watch the world go by, waiting for the sun to peek his head over the horizon and set the sky aflame with pinks and reds.

She hummed a small snatch of song that came to mind as she pulled her shawl a little bit closer to her arms. The hum then grew to a song as she approached the second verse. Her voice was soft, so quiet that not even Alastar could hear it. "I'm looking at myself reflections of my mind, it's just the kind of day to leave myself behind. So gently swaying through the fairyland of love, if you'll just come with me you'll see the beauty of Tuesday afternoon." She smiled, breaking the song. The song just seemed to fit, despite it not yet being the afternoon. Sapphire Glade did resemble some sort of fairyland, with it's perfect temperature and myriad of blossoms.

Maybe there even are fairies here... she thought with a pleasant little sigh as she closed her eyes, wondering what things fairies would be up to if they were living in Obsidian.

[/dohtml] |

Six days since arrival. It didn't seem like that long, really. If fact it barely seemed like a day due to how busy he had kept himself. There was a long list of chores and things to establish before any good would come from the arrangement they had going. The first and foremost was getting the house livable. With such a small shack on the beach, the clinic in Mineral wouldn't be happy. It was thanks to a quick coat of paint, some potted plants, clean window panes, and a broom that the inside and outside both looked presentable enough when the nurse arrived. She hadn't been very happy about the state of it all, especially with the factor there was only one room, though she didn't say much beyond that other then that he needed to add more additions on as soon as possible. Wolfram knew that better then anyone. A bathroom, a real kitchen, bedrooms, the works...that was all in the master plan for Sunstone Beachway 65. It would take time, yes, and money. Money that, somehow, he needed to get on his own. For the first time in many years he had another person depending on him. A dangerous thing but a welcome one. Maybe it was exactly what he needed, to begin thinking about settling down like that. Still, the nurse hadn't been happy. After she helped him hook up the cables to get the television and local channels working, and dropped off a huge library of DVDs for Soleil to watch since her 'outside time' was limited to no more then an hour a day until she was adjusted to the new environment, she had conceded and accepted it. The medicine was delivered with the promise she would return every two weeks to deliver more of it. A hectic thing in his mind, but what could he do? It was all part of the deal to let him take care of his step sibling. That was why just for a little while on this day, he welcomed the break. Sleep never came to him in more then five hour intervals as it was. It explained why he napped so often in the very least. His feet carried him with leisure, letting his eyes and mind roam over the new area curiously. The job front was still looking rough but easier now that a plan was forming in his mind. Soon enough if he couldn't decide on a shop of sorts, he'd just have to look at the possibility of a farm, or...or...something else! There was something just out there waiting. He knew it. It would bite him in the nose one of these days. Pale green peeked out over the darker shade of grass, bringing him crashing back down to reality quickly. Arching a eyebrow questioningly, he approached the unusual disturbance in colors to determine what it was, only to discover a resting body attached. Seeing someone just laying there on the ground with no one else around...well, it was only natural to worry, wasn't it? "Excuse me, miss? Are you all right...?" |

[dohtml]

Laura's foot tapped along to an unheard melody; the song in her head had switched but it had yet to find its way to her mouth. The movement left her foot and traveled up to her fingers against the damp grass. With each passing minute, the gray light grew brighter, and the edges of the clouds had a faint pink glow about them. The melody now transformed into a hum as Laura looked to her right. There was a small patch of flowers bobbing in the breeze. What were they called...? Goddess drops? She plucked one at the base of it's stem, bringing it to her nose as she continued to hum. The scent reminded her almost of cream: faintly sweet and very rich. She tucked it behind her ear as she closed her eyes, imagining her farm overflowing with flowers.

Her mental picture went blurry as someone spoke, causing her to jump. Her hand flew to the hollow of her throat as her eyes flew open. Off in the distance, Alastar barked loudly. She looked up to see a young man standing there, peering at her questioningly. A small blush rose to her cheeks as she nodded, sitting up slowly. She was dimly aware of the slight moisture that had accumulated on the back of her dress and shawl. Thankfully it wasn't much. She tucked a few strands of hair behind her ears, knocking the flower out of place and causing it to fall onto the ground. She stared at it for a second or two before snatching it up quickly, though she kept a light grip on it. Carefully, she placed it back behind her ear before she stood, nodding once more, blossom bobbing with her head.

"I am, sir, thank ye' for asking. I just thought I'd watch the sunrise." She smiled, almost sheepishly, before Alastar's barking caught her attention. She looked over to the dog, who was now bounding over the grass to her and the newcomer. His tongue was hanging out, a large doggy grin across his face. Laura let out a little chuckle as he ran a tight circle around her, then the stranger. He jumped up, pressing his paws onto Laura's chest, leaving wet paw prints on the shawl before jumping down and sitting next to her, looking up with a cocked head at the stranger's face. She scratched him quickly behind the ears before turning to the man.

"Ye'll have to excuse this monster here. He gets all excited when new people come around, he does." She scratched the dog behind the ears once more with her left hand, then stuck out her right after a quick curtsy. No point in waiting to introduce yourself. "I'm Laura Morcant, and this dear thing is Alastar." The black mutt barked happily, his dog-grin spreading over his face once more.

[/dohtml] |

A monster indeed! The second his eyes fell upon the dog, all worry and tension eased away from him. Why hadn't he thought of bringing Claves out with him? The puppy surely would have enjoyed the chance to get out of the house and away from the beach for once. Then again, the puppy was still new to the house herself, so perhaps she wasn't that bored of it and the expansive beach yet. One could hope, right? "Nice place to be watching the sunrise, Laura. Didn't think anyone else around here woke up so early." His grin was slight as he raised his hand to his eyes, shielding himself from the light as he gazed towards the morning sun. Mornings were the best time of the day to him - the thought of sleeping in and missing it all made him cringe a bit in protest. "The name's Wolfram Faulkner. Pleasure to meet you and your monster, Alastar." A bubble of laughter escaped him at the new title that would stick. "I've got a dog myself back at home. He and the cat prove that they can get along just fine. 'course, that might have to do with the fact both are still young. Just picked them up from the store awhile ago. A house is too empty without kids and critters, and without one, the other will have to do." |

[dohtml]

Laura nodded enthusiastically, the flower that was still perched behind her ear giving her a bit of a comical appearance as it bobbed up and down before. "'Tis indeed that, sir, 'tis indeed that. " She gave a small shrug, moving her hands behind her back where she interlaced her fingers. "Well, early to bed and early to rise makes a woman healthy, wealthy, and wise." She chuckled a little at her take on the saying, still thinking it was perfectly true. Still, she didn't think she'd need to tell the man that she had planned on sleeping in this morning. What he didn't know wouldn't hurt him, right? And besides, she got up before the sunrise everyday since she had moved in with her grandparents, even on Saturdays (though she had always been allowed a nap in the afternoon sunshine).

Laura let out a small laugh once more at Alastar's newly acquired nickname. Mayhap I'll introduce him like that from now on. Pleased ta' meetchya. This here's Alastar the monster. It has a nice ring to it, she mused, the smile left over from her laughter spreading a little further across her face. "And the same to ye, Mister Faulkner." She cocked her head slightly, an almost mirror image of the black beast beside her, and nodded at Wolfram's philosophy, agreeing with it wholeheartedly. Before leaving Ireland, she had begged for a dog to keep her company. While she loved cats, she found that a dog would be a much better helper on the farm.

"A store, ye say? I'd love to get me a cat meself. Mice are cute 'n all, but ye just can't have 'em gettin' into the seeds and such." She frowned a little, shrugging once more. "I don't think Alastar would have any qualms with a new kitten around the house, would you boyo?" She looked down at Alastar from the corner of her eye. He barked once, made a little motion that almost looked like he was shaking his head, then grinned once more, tongue lolling out the side of his mouth. "I didn't think ye would." She smiled, then turned her attention back to Wolfram. "Would they happen ta' have rabbits at this store, Wolfram? I've never thought any farm was complete without a few rabbits hoppin' around. But then again, I've never thought a farm was complete without a pair o' geese either, but I don't know if I could find those around here." She thought it rather unnecessary to add cows, sheep, horses, and chickens as those seemed to be at a ready supply. But geese... Now those were a rare sight. She couldn't help but grin once more as she thought back to the two old female geese who walked around her grandparents' farm like they owned the place, honking madly like watchdogs whenever the postman brought a package that was too big to fit into the mailbox up to the house.

[/dohtml] |

Rabbits, rabbits, rabbits. Fiorella had purchased one of those at the store, hadn't she? The white one with brown spots splotched around it. Why people enjoyed the furry creatures he never understood even now. They were small and adorable, yes, as were cats, but they were far more dependent and strange. If left alone they could literally die from abandonment according to a few people he spoke to. Because of that you needed at least one male and one female. That in turn lead to a ton of offspring that became a pain. Above it all, they didn't do anything! They just lazed around and ate food. No cuddling, no licking, nothing of that sort. A letdown in his mind. Regardless of his personal opinion, Wolfram nodded his head. "From what I recall there were five of them at the store. A white one that had brown on her ears and mouth, a pure white one, a different one with black fur and a white patch for his collar, this orange one, and this tiny brown bunny. When I was there picking up my cat and dog, there was another person with me. She bought the one that was white and had brown in various spots. That one was pretty cute, too. The black one and brown one are as well." Even if they were cute, they still didn't add up to much in his mind. Ah well, to each their own. "Claves is the one I picked up for myself. She's a mix between a rottweiler and doberman with a heart of gold. Energetic when I'm around but already listens and knows when to get attention so we can let her outside. Didn't seem right to get her a litterbox, but the male cat I got for my step sister knows how to use his just fine. A small American shorthair that's curious about everything. Half the time he's tailing along with Claves like they're the best of friends. Odd how animals can connect like that, especially when there are so many rumors about them clashing." |

[dohtml]

Laura's smile faded slightly at his answer. They only have five? No. Wait. They only have four. No doubt she'd be unable to get a proper hutch set up to keep them before they were sold. Rabbits, or at least as far as she'd seen, were quite popular with small children and there was probably dozens of young families on the island. Not to mention the fact that rabbits weren't her top priority animal of the moment. She'd have to get a small chicken coop, then a chicken or two to go in said coop. She just wouldn't have any extra money to spare on something that was only there for the cute-and-fuzzy factor. Maybe by next year... she thought as she turned her attention back to Wolfram, who was now speaking of his dog.

"Claves? That's a nice name. She sounds adorable." She was a little wary of the fact that the dog was a Rottweiler-Doberman mix. Those were two dogs that she wouldn't want to have chasing after her, that's for sure. But then again, it all depended on their upbringing, and Wolfram seemed like a nice sort of man. Laura didn't feel the need to tell him such information. Instead, she spoke of the relationship between his two pets. "It is odd, indeed. I guess it all really has to do with how and when they were put together. Younger animals just seem more geared to getting along." She let out a low chuckle before continuing. "That includes us humans as well."

It was slightly funny, now that she thought about it. Baby animals of any sort clung to whatever companionship they could get. Only when they grew older, learning the sometimes hateful and cruel ways of the world, did they turn on each other. Mayhap the world would be a great deal better if we all behaved more like children, she thought, looking over at Alastar. He looked back to her, let out a woof, then bounded away, bored with the humans momentarily. The constantly moving butterflies were much more fun!

Laura grinned, watching him chase the bugs for a short second or two, before turning her attention back to Wolfram. "So, an American shorthair ye say? He sounds cute as well. I suppose I don't need any fancy pure-bred cat. Maybe a female, since all tom-cats want to do are eat and laze about in the sun." She let out another quiet laugh, more memories of the farm coming back. This time it was of their old, nameless male cat who did exactly what she described. Oh how she missed that farm... "I suppose the only setback, if you could call it that, would be the kittens if she somehow got loose and found a mate."

[/dohtml] |

There were some people in the world that looked at their situation with varied differences. Frivolous women who married for money to get their claws into the higher class of society, men who went for said women just to have a trophy wife and eye candy on their arm, poor beggars that scrapped together every last bit of food they could find for their children, gluttons that became obese over the enjoyment of indulgence, youths rebelling against their parental guidance to learn their own path in life, parents dealing with losing their jobs and mid-life crisis... There were so many types of circumstance in the world. Laura, for one, already appeared to enjoy hers. If only more people could be like that then things would be better in the long run. "I've seen a lot of animals in my travels. My favorite my far would be domesticated wolf pups. 'course, you can't find those in these parts, but up north there was this young woman who raised them to the best of her ability. They came out just like a dog. Scared the living daylights out of most that came around, but were still very loyal and protective. When I asked her why she'd put herself on the line like that she told me it was because all animals deserved a chance, just like people did. Heh, might sound kind of odd." Would he be able to settle into the same comfortable situation of his own? They both seemed to have it. Laura, and the girl he remembered so clearly. It was so admirable of them and neither of them even knew it. Life, truly, had unfair aspects as well. A low grumble alerted him, causing him to glance down a bit. Hmm, a bit hungry already? That wasn't too much of a surprise. Soon enough an apologetic smile graced his features, "I should be heading back to fix a meal for Soleil and I. It was wonderful meeting you, Laura, and I do hope we'll see each other again in the future. If you ever want to stop by to visit or are at the beach, don't be shy. My house is number sixty-five along the strip. There are many out there, so that makes it easier too." |

Domesticated wolf pups? She let out a small chuckle when Wolfram said that more often than not people were scare of them. "I suppose I could see why. I've heard wolves can get aggressive. Unfortunately, wolves are basically extinct in Ireland... It's really sad. I'd love to see one, one day." She shrugged, then shook her head. "I don't really think it sounds odd. I don't know if such an animal should be domesticated, since from what I've heard they seem so majestic, but I don't believe that they should be hunted down and killed, though." She shook her head, then shrugged once more.

She gave her own smile as Wolfram's stomach growled. She bowed her head a little in thanks at the compliment. And if ye ever find yourself out along Amethyst Acres, Alastar and I would be pleased if ye'd stop by. My farm's name is Aimitis Demense. It's not actually that far from here. If I had a cow, ye'd probably be able to hear it."

She looked back from the way she walked from her farm. She was sure that, in better light, she'd be able to see the roof of her house. She brought her left index and middle fingers to her lips, then gave a loud whistle. Alastar, who was following the lump left behind by some mole, lifted his head, tongue wagging out. He gave a resounding bark, then dashed over. "Say goodbye, Alastar." The dog barked again, wagging his tail wildly.

[/dohtml] |

The dog certainly was obedient, wasn't he? She was doing a wonderful job on raising Alastar to be an adorable 'monster' in his own right. Claves, would she turn out to be so well adjusted? Yes, she would be big (hard not to be with her mixed status!), but that wasn't the thing that worried him the most. It was the temperament. Ah well, he'd just need to keep a close eye on her and treat her right so that she was friendly, easy to handle, and loyal to her master. Obedience was the trick there; obedience without force, that was. The idea of making a dog be beaten into submission never settled well. Raising his hand in a farewell wave, Wolfram smiled. "Aimitis Demense. I will stop by when I travel to that area, you have my word on it." It would be a decent walk back to the beach. That was, of course, if he could find his way back. Time would allow him to adjust to the village, yes, but in the mean time...well. He'd deal with it if he did lose his way. |

"I hope the rest of the villagers around here are this nice, Alastar." The dog barked in agreement before running off as well, though he didn't stray quite as far. Her smile faded slightly as she looked to the east. The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon, and the sky was a brilliant pink.
