((Mu’s unnatural love for his mother bordering on an Oedipus complex has temporarily saved him from Odetta xDD))

Mu blinked, a little confused. Had something about Odetta just changed again? It was really starting to perplex him. What was this strange power she held? He still hadn’t been able to quite figure it out. All he knew was that suddenly, the danger had felt… lessened. Wait, he had felt danger?

It was strange, but the absence of it made the young man aware of it more than its presence had. That must have been why he had felt slightly intimidated by her at the start. It made a little more sense. Well, not really. The real question, he supposed, was why he had felt danger to begin with. She seemed nice enough, albeit rather… odd? He couldn’t think of a word for it.

But now Odetta was looking at him like some great tragedy had taken place, and he didn’t understand why. What had he done wrong? “Are you… um… okay?” he asked quietly. It was rare for him to speak first without being addressed, but the woman was starting to worry him.

Mu's sense of danger was correct, as he had nearly been tricked into drinking copious amounts of alcohol earlier. He was simply lucky that deep down somewhere inside that twisted, lust filled heart was a woman who had a soft side for dramatic pasts. While she didn't know his, hell, didn't even know if he had one, she had already made up her mind that he probably did and, thus, deserved her kinder side.<BR><BR>

She looked up and nodded, smiling a bit more fully at Mu before looking off to the side. Her sister and her date had disappeared, though she wasn't sure how long they'd been gone or when they'd left to begin with. She had been too wrapped up in this roller coaster ride of a date to notice.<BR><BR>

But now things seemed to be winding down between the blond and Mu and for that she was thankful. She was tiring of the little game she'd been playing and simply wanted to enjoy the date, as she had signed up for it to begin with. "You know, Mu, you're actually very sweet. Has anyone told you that before?"

She had smiled at him. Mu blushed slightly, a bit taken by this gesture. Yes, the woman had smiled at him on a number of occasions throughout the night, but that had been when she had seemed dangerous. Now though, it was different. Her smile was… beautiful.

He watched her in silent admiration as she looked off somewhere, appearing to be searching for someone. His mind sought to memorize every detail in her face, processing everything his eyes took notice of. So absorbed was he that when Odetta spoke again, the young man nearly jumped.

He was sweet?

No, actually, no one had ever told him that before. Usually it was something more along the lines of “Stop following me!” or “You’re kind of scary.” But Odetta… she thought he was… “sweet”? Mu felt his stomach seem to drop and his blushing only increased.

Wait! No, someone had called him sweet before! That’s right, how had he forgotten to mention it?

“Just mother.”

Odetta watched as Mu blushed slightly and fancied him rather cute. It was sweet in an innocent sort of way, and now she knew the attraction her parents had to her sister. Innocent was so light, so tangible, so sweet, and she couldn't help but find herself entranced at what lied before her. She and Mu appeared to be such opposites that it wasn't even funny. It was disturbing in a way, like looking into a mirror that showed everything you weren't.<BR><BR>

Though that wasn't really the matter at hand at the time. She glanced back towards Mu, noting that his blush increased, and she heard his words float through the air. His mother? Something about the thought of him having a great relationship with his mother made her both happy and a bit sad. He was the second person on the island she'd met that seemed to have a great relationship with their parents, and all in all it make her jealous.<BR><BR>

So she decided to ask a question, though this one actually had a point. "Do you get along well with your mom?"

When Odetta pressed further about his mother, he couldn’t help but smile. For once, the question didn’t disturb him or make him uncomfortable. There was no awkwardness. He felt safe.

“Yes,” he answered calmly. His reply was just as concise as his previous ones had been, but there was a notably different feel to it. While all his conversation up till that point had been awkward, he now appeared relaxed and a little less nervous. Just a little.

  • A small giggle was forced through Phoebe's parted lips. It took all her control to not roll her eyes and fake gag at her display. "It's true. I turned twenty-five last winter." She smiled, hoping it looked a bit sheepish, and she glanced at their joined hands for a moment. She resisted the urge to purse her lips. While she loved to dance, she was getting a bit bored of their slow circles.

She smiled once more as he looked down at her, his own smile gentle and kind. Phoebe supposed it wasn't all bad dancing with him. She thought once more of those less-than-gentlemanly males who would slowly slide their hands down her back, just a little at a time throughout their dance, until it rested upon her bottom. Of course, this had only happened when she was in dancing classes and not dancing with the instructor, but it had still happened.

She shrugged almost casually at his comment. "I don't know. Some people may like them, I would suppose, as I've taken a wide range of photographs. But sometimes, people just don't feel they need any art hanging upon their walls."

Nyida laughed, shaking her head and pointing to the empty glass on the other side of the table "I've already had my water. Finished it just moments before I ninja attacked you." Placing her arms in her lap she let her head fall back staring at the stars, but it lasted for a mere moment and her eyes were back to Fred. "How'd you and the boy meet? You two seem pretty close. Who else would dance with a drunk man with a bunch of people watching? You known him long?"

She went to place her hands into the jacket she normall would have had on, but missed the invisible pockets, and frowned. A bit frustrated at the lack of comfort it gave her, she placed her hands back down in her lap and folded them over one another. It was the best she could do- this is what girls got for having to wear dresses. At least it wasn't an everyday thing. "I haven't known him too long- he's a good kid though." Why she was calling him kid, she would never be able to understand- he was a year older than her afterall.

Fred looked at Jim, and smiled up at Nydia. "We met at the Inn just a few days ago. I was less than kind to a guest there and Jim set me straight." Chuckling he continued, "Then I saw him at the mainland, and we beat each other up; took a few days for my beautiful face to get back it's shine. And some hoe, after that, we've been connected at the hip. I somehow get along better with people I have fist fights with, if it's not over something too serious." Leaning back in his chair he watched as she appeared to try and put her hands in nonexistent pockets. She must not be used to dresses.

Smiling, slightly amused he nodded. "Yeah, he is a good kid, just one with a rebellious streak."

His answer was different. Instead of his usual awkward and nervous way of speaking, the way he'd admitted his answer to her this time was very smooth, very easy. She figured his relationship with his mother was truly great, since it seemed to be the only topic he relaxed about. It was cute, honestly, to see such a love for someone. While she admittedly never had that kind of relationship with her parents, or anyone besides her sister really, she did find it endearing.<BR><BR>

And, at the same time, it made her jealous. Just as she had been before with Madeline, she felt herself wishing and dreaming that her parents had cared for her and Ophelia more. Still, she didn't really want to travel down that road again, and instead nodded her head at Mu. "I'm glad," she replied, knowing that was all she could say.

Nathaniel was tired. Too tired, in fact, to do a lot of things.

One of them was listening to this irritating chatterbox. As they made their way to their table, he heard her say some stuff about something he couldn't be bothered to pay much attention to. If it was important, surely she would repeat it again. If not, he figured the motormouth would just keep going on about something else anyway. Honestly, some people were content with simply talking away, regardless of whether or not anyone was listening. So, surely this girl was one of them. If not, then perhaps she could go back to that friend she was with and then they would both be happy!

... He sighed. Oh, if only there was such a world.

Within a few moments, they had come to their table without a problem. The man sat down across from her and made himself comfortable. He smoothed out his tuxedo, straigthening the ends of his sleeves before he began preening at his hair. Once he had finished, he also sat back. However, instead of admiring the beauty of the nature around him, Nathaniel decided to bore a hole in the table with his stare. It was too loud. All these annoying bumpkins, shouting and dancing in such an unrefined manner... he felt ashamed to be here. Really, he had to devise some kind of foolproof way to get out of going to these damned festivals every time they came up.

At least Myrta had shut up.

Then: "What was your reason for signing up for the blind date?"

Nathaniel cringed inwardly. I hate you too, workld, he thought, feeling as though the words had run through his head a thousand times that evening. He looked up at Myrta, simply staring at her for a moment as he contemplated his answer. However, it did not take him long to decide what to say.

"I was forced." The truth, and nothing but. Might was well get it all out there while he was at it. "My wretched cousin forced me into signing up, even though I did this moronic thing last time. Ugh, at least you're not a man like the first stupid blind date." Nathaniel clenched his fist, inwardly fuming at the very thought. But, he forced himself not to linger on it and rolled along. "So, I will tell you now that I don't actually want to be here. I hate these festivals. You talk too much. I am tired, but if I leave you then my annoying cousin will punish me."

I am whipped, he thought, cursing himself violently in his head.

With a sigh, the man folded his arms and closed his eyes. "If you want to go, then fine. I meant all of that as kindly as possible," Nathaniel went on. "Even someone like you doesn't deserve to have that truth hidden from them."

Suddenly, for the first time since he’d met Odetta, Mu felt a sense of peace. Not to say that he wasn’t still a bit nervous. After all, she was a girl. However, it was unlikely he’d come near having a heart attack again. It was that witch power. Somehow, it had turned off. Somehow, he knew the threat had vanished. Now the power she held over him was equal to that of any other girl… Which was probably still a lot. Still, it was a great improvement.

He nodded slowly in acknowledgement at Odetta’s reply, eyes fixed upon her in a far-off golden gaze. His expression remained blank, and yet contained a sort of acceptance; an approval of her presence. He had decided she was safe, someone that could perhaps come closer if they had the patience.

Her lack of words hardly affected Mu. In fact, he hadn’t really taken notice of it, not exactly being a conversationalist himself. Instead, he continued to look directly into her eyes, unblinking.

For a second it seemed like someone had stolen her cute, adorable date and replaced him with a dummy. Mu neither replied nor changed expression at Odetta's response and, even though she knew it was a rather short one, she at least figured some sort of emotional connection would be made. Whether it was frown, a smile, a laugh, whatever, she honestly expected him to respond in some way. When all he did was nod and then continue to stare on, Odetta felt herself fall into a bit of a lull herself.<BR><BR>

So, in return, she stared right back. Her expressionless gaze locked with his and, for the longest time, the two just stared. And finally she blinked, smiled, and tilted her head. There was really nothing she could say in such a situation, but she had to admit that simply staring was kind of... boring.

The awkward silence of this staring contest was even beginning to get to Mu, and he wondered if Odetta had expected something of him. What more was he supposed to say? She hadn’t asked him any questions. She’d done nothing to suggest he was required to speak. Erm… Had she?

He blinked, silently wondering if socializing involved some sort of secret code that all people were expected to know. Hm. This stuff was harder to master than he’d thought.

When Odetta’s expression finally changed however, he found himself returning her gesture with a sheepish smile of his own. She still said nothing however, so Mu swallowed nervously and opened his mouth to speak again.

“Um… How… are you?”

[[ooc: bah, it's forever late and not even half as long as I wanted it to be. Sorry, Indigo. D:]]<br>

Charlotte nodded, the small smile replacing her look of surprise, though it didn't seem to reach all the way up to her eyes. Chocolate always seemed the apropos gift to give, unless your date happened to be lactose intolerant. Then it might turn into some sort of joke, if said date was amiable. And besides, what had she been expecting? Diamonds? She looked down at her jewel-less fingers, then to the necklace. It was the most expensive piece of jewelry she owned, and even some of it was still fake. No... I suppose I wasn't. She looked down at the box once more, then up at Jacob, her smile widening. "It's wonderful." <br>
<br>
She twirled the box idly in her hands, another small bout of nervousness washing over her. She bit the inside of her lip, glancing down as her date looked around. She looked up just as he looked back, causing her to blush a little and look down. She was slightly startled at his question, though he almost sounded a bit bored and perhaps hesitant. She shrugged, clearing her throat. "I suppose it doesn't really matter to me..." Her voice trailed off while the urge to smack herself across her face welled up inside. Looks like I'm doing a lot of 'supposing' tonight, she thought, resisting the urge to let out a nervous little laugh.<br>
<br>
"Well... There's always dancing." She looked over to the floor where several couples were twirling about. "Or we could just sit and talk." Or we could leave and pretend this never happened, she thought, remembering how angry he looked earlier. No, no, no! Stop that! She took a deep breath, attempting to calm herself down. "Perhaps we could get some drinks before we do anything? I'm feeling slightly thirsty."<br>

W-wonderful?

Jacob reached up and scratched his earlobe awkwardly. W-well... okay. He hadn't thought some simple assorted chocolates could be associated with such a word, but all right. Better that than "awful" or something. Right? Though, he was unsure what to say in response... so, he did the only thing he could manage: a curt, perhaps impatient-looking nod. Okay. So.

... Huh.

The man rubbed the back of his neck. Urk, blind dates. Actually, dates in general were about as foreign to him as brain surgery. Sure, he had gone on ones before, but those were light years away from the normal definition of a 'date'. In short, this was all new to him. But, well, he seemed to be doing decently so far. I mean, he thought, she hasn't run away screaming yet. That... that was good, wasn't it? Y-yeah, it had to be. Jacob looked back at her and saw that she was looking down, looking a bit... embarassed, it seemed? D-did she want to so something strange? The man gulped, suddenly feeling more anxious himself, only to have his fears suddenly doused by her rather weak reply: "I suppose it doesn't really matter to me..."

Charlotte let out a bit of nervous laughter, which he joined in on. At least she seemed to be somewhat uncomfortable, too... but, wait, that wasn't a good thing. It was his job to make her feel happy, and yet...

Jacob ran a hand through his hair. Just as he tried to think of something to do, he stopped himself as Charlotte went on. "Well... There's always dancing."

Dancing? Holy. Crap. No. Jacob cleared his throat, stranging a cough in his throat at the very thought. He was good on his feet when it came to almost everything except dancing. He winced slightly. He seriously doubted that Charlotte wanted a bunch of swollen toes tonight. Then, another idea came up. "Or we could just sit and talk." ... Well. That seemed better, but not by much. If she did most of the talking, then that would be good, but what would he say? Talking about himself probably wasn't such a hot idea, and...

"Perhaps we could get some drinks before we do anything? I'm feeling slightly thirsty." Thank. Goodness. Something he was sure he could manage. Jacob lightly brushed a bit of hair away from his eyes and gave her a nod. With a grateful - if not slightly forced - smile on his face, he began his way over to the refreshment table. This... this was a good step. The man stopped at the table and obtained two cups before he began pouring the closest beverage into each. Once this task was completed, he picked both up and turned to Charlotte, holding one out for her. Just as he put his cup to his lips, he paused.

He hadn't said anything for a while. Er... let's see, what was good to say? Well, he had gone through "sorry I'm late" and "here's your gift"... what else was--?

Oh. Wait. The obvious one, which was also the hardest for him.

A colour rose to his face as the words surfaced in his head. Jacob narrowed his eyes again and looked away, taking a moment to gather his wits and think about how to say it. However, several moments passed and he found himself going nowhere fast. So, he ended up simply squeezing the words out, painfully and awkwardly, one by one. "I... um. You look... good."
