• Charlotte nodded mutely, following Vanilla. A wave of relief washed over her as she trailed behind him, glad that she wouldn't be stuck in the midst of the festival alone while couples and families chatted away the evening. Just as she visioned her date becoming angry, she visioned herself sitting alone at a table, nibbling away on some food, occasionally taking a sip of some obscure liquid, staying put even as people meandered back home, leaving her to sit there until a crew came to clean everything up.

She bit her lip once again, trying to clear her head of the morbid thoughts. Instead, she looked closely at her surroundings now. Everything was some color of aqua, and the lanterns, which were rather a common thing to her, still looked resplendent and picturesque. She felt a small smile spreading across her lips as her romantic side took hold. "Wow. Everything's so beautiful..." she breathed as she gazed around once more.

She turned her attention back to Vanilla when he spoke of his date forgetting. Her smile turned into a crooked little grin; not totally one of pity, but not one lacking it either. "It seems mine is running late or he's forgotten as well. At least we have each other's company." The awkward little grin turned into a hopeful, encouraging look as she nodded at his question.

"Well, give me a second. I need to check my levels again." She pulled out the meter, going through the same old song and dance. At least she had thought ahead and given herself an insulin shot at home. She had to inject it in her leg, and was extremely embarrassed at the thought of going out a little way into the forest to lift up her dress and being found by someone. Her levels were slightly low, as were to be expected, but they were overall fine. She put her purse and shawl into a seat before stepping up to the refreshment table beside Vanilla and pouring herself a drink.

The best Villager of them all
Villagers
The night had grown later and later in the small village, and the citizens seemed to barley notice. Their laughter, and free spirits so energeticly dancing like puppets below the stars, as if they would never tire. Fireflies buzzed around the lanters, not roaming far from them. The food's delicious smell wafted about the area, and the classical music drew out the prisioners to the jail where they would dance forever.

Nyida's heels caught in the dance touched against the solid dance floor reassuring her steps of their grace, her hand still laced with Jim's held so perfectly in the air that there was no shaking of the arm, her eyes had no distraction then the face of her partner and their goal to enjoy the dance.

The rim of her dress brushed against her ankles with every step, chest lifted up and down with needed air, jade green eyes daring Jim to join this dance forever. To be stuck with her as his dance partner until there was nothing left to shove air into their lungs, and they fell dead to the floor as nothing but those Star's puppets that they were.

"Jim," Nyida said softly breaking away from him in the dance "I'm enjoying this date more than I had imagined." Her body spun out on one foot a very small distance to Jim's left, leg lifting until her knee was in the air, the dress flailing out to reach for what was every closest, and as quickly as it had begun her foot landed safely on the ground.

Hands falling together in a clap up by her ear quickly she'd spin off to Jim's right, her other knee finding the air, foot landing, a second clap being presented. It was just then when she was getting ready to face Jim with her final spin, the screaming Creature stalked up to them.

Blind like a bat the woman spoke directly to Jim interupting their dance. Calm. She's just making conversation. Maybe her date didn't show. Calm. Her hand lifted and she gave a small wave indicating "Hello" in the nicest manner as possible. It seemed Jim was caring to the rest.

--------

"You're not nervous, are you?" The woman laughed, and grinned up at the man shaking her head slightly "The only thing I'm nervous of is your dancing. So far seems you can stay off my feet, but I'm guessing it's just pure luck." Myrta would later convince herself she wasn't nervous. Time being she'd thrown the burgler back in his view. "We're not gonna let a bunch of teenagers show us up, are we Myrta?" The grin stayed and her eyes glanced over to the busy teenagers. "I wouldn't be on the dance floor if I was going to have some kind of fun. This time you're two shiney best buds can't help you, so I'll save you there." Winking she straightened her form a little.

She was ready.

"Should we wait until they're not busy?" It would seem like the best thing to do. Let them see their competition at it's best, not have to pay attention to one and watch out of the corner of their eye. Her mind was already working on dance moves she was sure the other two hadn't even dreamed of. "Sure you're up for it, Abe?" She teased.

"Should we wait until they're not busy?" Kent shrugged slightly but, noticing that the teens were still preoccupied, he nodded. "Yeah, guess so." Ah, the drama of teenage life. He grinned when he recalled all the crap he'd put his parents and peers through. Thought it was a grin of amusement and not regret. They eventually forgave him. Sort of. "Sure you're up for it, Abe?" Myrta teased and, blinking, Kent snapped back into reality and looked over to her. He smirked.

"It must be annoying, have to do that all the time." Vanilla was referring to how Charlotte needed to check her...er, whatever she called it levels. He paused, realizing how rude that might've sounded. "I mean, I don't find it annoying," Vanilla quickly added, feeling suddenly flustered and dumb, "It's just....yeah. You know." He would have smacked himself in the forehead if he wasn't holding a plate full of food. Smooth moves, Vanilla. Smooth. Sighing a bit, the blonde took his seat back at the table. While munching on his food, he gazed out at the dancing couples.

"That looks fun." He said this absentmindedly, hoping to create some type of small talk. It would be boring if they'd just sat there in silence.

  • Charlotte shook her head slightly, chuckling good-naturedly at Vanilla's quick amendment. "It was for a long time, but after a decade and a half of doing it, you get used to it." She shrugged, wincing slightly as her sore finger pressed too hard on her cup. "Well, you get used to most of it. The finger pain is very annoying. I'm hoping to trade in my old meter for one of the kind that test on your arm, though I've heard they aren't nearly as effective." Taking a long sip, she put a few sprouts of broccoli on her plate, then a few bell pepper slices, spooning a healthy dollop of ranch dressing beside them.

    "That looks fun."

A look of slight confusion passed over her face quickly as she followed Vanilla's line of vision out onto the dance floor. She nodded enthusiastically, chewing as fast as she could. Swallowing quickly (and almost choking) she looked back at the blond male. "Yeah, it does. I love dancing. I guess I have my mother to thank." She laughed softly once again before looking back out at the dancers.

As Preston and his sister danced, tripping over each other, snickering the whole time, he noticed a few of the couples doing some rather fancy moves. As he stood in awe as a few of them actually lifted their partners in the air, Melody stepped on his foot. Giggling she apologized, "Oh! Sorry Preston!" Following his gaze she sighed dreamily, "Oh I wish I had my sketchbook..."

Glancing at his sister, he grinned. "Who needs a sketchbook when we can do it!"
Melody looked at her brother with a mixture of amusement and alarm, "W-w-what?! Absolutely not! You're going to drop-"
Even as she was talking, Preston put his hands on her waist and braced himself to pick her up, "Nonsense! And if I do, I'll catch you." Then, before Melody could protest, he hoisted her up into the air and spun.

It started out just fine, almost graceful, but just as he was finishing off his turn, his feet became tangled and with a yelp, he fell backwards. However, just as he promised, he held onto Melody, ensuring that she landed safely. With a thud and the two landed in the grass; for a few moments, they lay there, trying to get their bearings. Snorting, Melody rolled off of Preston and looked at her brother with a smile. Before they could stop themselves, the siblings burst out laughing; they didn't even notice how strange they must look sprawled out beside each other on the outskirts of the dancing, laughing happily.

"I'd be delighted, Mister Sloane." Ulysses smiled at her accent, thinking he had never heard something so lovely. He felt it might be a little corny to say something like that at present, so instead he just smiled appreciatively after she had taken his hand, and then he promptly brought her hand up to kiss the back of it. He had been looking up at her face, but now cast his gaze away, afraid of seeing her with a disgusted expression. So, keeping their hands between them, he moved them towards the dancing area - after dropping off his print by the table, as well.

"What dance shall we do, my good sir?"

Ulysses' eyes widened ever so slightly, and he hoped the woman next to him did not notice his nervous gulp. He really didn't know too many dances...the waltz was easy enough, he reasoned, but wondered if Noemi may have a different one in mind.

"Did you have any specific dances in mind, dear madam?" He asked, turning his smile upon her, hoping she didn't notice his increased nervousness.

---------

Kayla curiously watched as 'Mr. Sunshine' silently but quite efficiently left the scene, walking into the forest, apparently. She couldn't help but wonder, walking in the woods like that, what might become of the tux he was wearing. Kayla's attention returned to the woman sitting across from her when the woman spoke her name - 'Chou.' Interesting name.

"Well, welcome to Obsidian, then." Kayla said, with a small nod and what she hoped was a kind smile. "Yes, we tend to have festivals like this at least once a season...and my mother usually makes my brother and I go, or at least one of us." She added the last part quickly, not wishing to go into explaining her brother's whereabouts just in case she was asked.

"May I ask how you've found the island so far?" Kayla asked curiously, as she took another bite of a carrot.

---------

Trey devoured another one of his cookies, licking the remnants from around the sides of his mouth as he, too, turned his attention to those on the dance floor. He blinked, wondering why anyone would want to be tossed about like that. Sometimes, grown-ups were really odd. Then he noticed Miss Rose had already taken a bite or two, and decided to ask her how she liked the cake.

"How's the cake?" He asked, retrieving another cookie and now nibbling on it.

Turning her eyes back to her temporary ward, Rose smiled. "It's heavenly. I haven't had any sweets in several months, so it's very nice." Taking another bite, she reveled in it. Licking her lips clean of any excess chocolate, she looked back at Trey. "Your uncle tells me that you've just moved here. How do you like it so far?"

Trey stopped nibbling on his cookie when he heard her question, and cautiously looked up at her. He blinked, and looked away, pondering on it for a moment. Finally, after taking another bite and swallowing it down, he said,

"It's not bad... I made a couple friends." He replied, though he didn't sound too enthusiastic about it. He still thought on his old school a lot, and how he was able to often see his sister there, though they were in different grades. He frowned, and blinked, suddenly missing his sister but determined not to let it show, too much.

"Do you have any brothers or sisters, Miss Rose?" He asked suddenly, looking at her with a curious, but slightly sad, expression.

By this point he didn't expect much. He expected maybe to be accosted and escorted out by angered festival goers, joined by the tears of an angelic young girl to throw the Monstrosity of A Chef out of the Glade, maybe even out of the village, exiled on an island far, far away where he could never cause such disaster and turmoil again...

And somehow when the tears spilled over her wide, innocent eyes, this seemed about right. A few strangers were staring. Some with an almost menacing glare. If pitchforks were on hand, surely he would be impaled on one or two by now. Fighting the urge to shrink away and curl up under the table where no one could judge him (as much as he deserved it), Blaise simply had to stand his ground, mind blanking completely as a way to mend this mistake.

He was literally seconds away from dropping to the ground and begging forgiveness (despite his earlier valiant claims of not needing it) or pleading some form of appropriate punishment when she took the box. Blaise blinked. "Thank you," she said. And then said it again. He wasn't sure if he was hearing right, but then she just kept saying it, over and over, a sobbed and broken chorus.

"Er, I..."

And he just couldn't fathom for the life of him what she would be thanking him for, until his empty still outstretched hand clicked in his mind. The chocolates. For the chocolates. Still puzzled to where this change of attitude came from, he found himself helpless, stranded, and probably still getting very odd looks from anyone who wasn't too busy dancing. More than anything, now that the storm had reached... some kind of transitional calm, he wished he could start the night over.

Um. Well. Now that you mention it, it was worth a shot.

After only being able to stare, dumbfounded and preeeetty damn useless, he suddenly started scrambling again. Stuffing the papers back in his apron, which he finally untied and stashed it under the table with his foot. What he was left wasn't a tuxedo, but it was better than with the apron, manly as it was; plainer, maybe, but clean, just a white dress shirt and black pants and shoes that were admittedly a bit scuffed from the crazy paths he'd bolted down.

"Why don't we... start over?" Smiling nervously, he gave his shoulders a sheepish shrug and held out a hand, "I'm Blaise Chaffe; it's a pleasure to finally meet you, Miss Madeline."

"Do you have any brothers or sisters, Miss Rose?

She blinked at the question, and stared at her cake for a minute before answering. "Yes. I have two younger brothers; Edward and Daniel." Rose looked back at Trey with a gentle, kind of sad smile, "Daniel is just a few years older than you." Clearing her throat she quickly took another bite of cake; no time to be sentimental. Assuming he had asked the question for a reason, after swallowing, she added, "How about you, Mr. Trey? Do you have siblings?"

This time, she was more prepared and didn't almost miss the thrill because of it. Up again, up like a kid on the swingset, around, a headrush and a high all blended into such a simple but powerfully exhilirating movement. It was like the world stopped for even just a second, on a breath and a heartbeat, until her feet hit the earth again. And by then, the joy and the pure rush had bubbled from her chest to her lips, rising up as a laugh, pure and unbridled, floating warm on the cool night air. A drop, then; it never felt so good to be caught as when dancing, lost in the heat of moments like this, being able to just let go of the mind and move. Dance.

For that split second of eye contact, Chimera had a smile on her face bigger than anyone had seen in days. Weeks, even.

And off they went again. Spinning, whirling, a twist, a pause. And she was nearly breathless, from the laughing and the moving and the still-racing heart; but with a lapse in the excitement, she still mustered the effort to talk. Because keeping quiet was torture after something as unexplainable as that.

"Yeesh, man," she said, words threaded with laughter, "I never took you as a dancer. Who's been teaching you all this, huh?"

Fred grinned; it had been a long while since he had danced like this. And to think he was doing it with a young woman he had been rather furious when they last parted. Somehow though, the way she laughed and grinned, the way her eyes glittered with joy, made him forget why he had been annoyed with her in the first place. That was what he had forgotten he loved about dancing; the way it made all past problems and disagreements drop away.

Giving her a gentle twirl, and bringing her back to his arms Fred chuckled. "When you travel, you learn things." Looking down at her, he smiled crookedly. She was somehow looking more and more lovely. How is she doing that? he wondered, though in reality he didn't really care. It could have been some bloody fairy godmother, and she'd turn into a pumpkin soon for all he knew! What mattered was that the two of them were having fun, and if when the music stopped, they parted ways for the rest of the evening, it would be a bit disappointing but the memory of their dance would be forever captured in the dream like bubble they were in now.

Fred cringed inwardly, though his smile remained on his face, Sheesh, I should write my own cheesy romance novel; The Cyclopes and the Woman That Kind of Annoyed Him. No wonder I don't dance much; it makes my head go all screwy!

“I'm, uh, kinda busy. You know. Dancing.”

To this response, Min Hee brought her tiny, pale hands to her mouth in one dramatic motion, executing a perfectly practiced expression of pleasant surprise. “So this pretty girl must be your date~!” she chirped. But she’s not as pretty as me.

When Jim’s dance partner gave her a small wave, the teen returned the gesture energetically, her hand swinging back and forth in a blur. She grinned at the stranger and giggled as she introduced herself. “I’m Min Hee Ko~! And who might you be?”

Ah, it was nice to meet others her own age. She still barely knew anyone on this island. Still, it would have been even better if her date had actually shown up… Or at least a few cute guys.

“So this pretty girl must be your date~!” Jim stared at her blankly. Min Hee Ko wasn't the brightest bulb of the pack, was she? Of course Nyida was his date - who would dance with a complete stranger! He was hoping, actually praying, that Min would get the hint and high tail it out of there. But, of course, she didn't. Big surprise there! Instead of leaving like he'd wish she would, Min actually start to introduce herself to Nyida. Knowing he should get out of there before he snapped at her - she could annoy him so easily it wasn't even funny anymore - Jim excused himself to Nyida and walked off the floor.

Reaching their table, he plopped down in Hazel's seat - he wasn't paying attention or just didn't care - and let out a huge sigh. He had been having fun too! What the heck is with Min anyway? No respect at all! Gah! Jim paused, realizing that he hadn't done much better by being so cold and rude towards her. He frowned, a bit of guilt hitting him. Great, just what he needed to feel. Grumbling, Jim reached out to grab his glass of Root Beer.

Unfortunately for Jim, he wasn't aware that he had accidentally sat down at a different table. And, instead of grabbing his Root Beer, he had unknowingly grabbed a glass of alcoholic beer that someone had poured for themselves. And he was downing it!
