[dohtml]

winter 7th; 12:43 PM
cloudy sky, cold breeze

How had she ended up here?

Despite the fact that she had lived in this hillbilly town all of her life, Madelena
had never, ever once stepped foot in this area. It was covered in happy little
flowers growing against happy green grass with happy swaying trees casting
their happy dancing shadows against the happy colorful ground. It. Was.
Sickening. Quite frankly, it was taking all she had in her not to take her cane
and beat the happy right out of this very place. It was winter, for god's sake,
why was this place so lively? There was no snow surrounding the area, and the
ice that had nearly tripped her this morning on the way here was nonexistent.
Why? What made this place so great? What was oh-so special about this neck
of the woods?

Grumbling to herself, the woman limped throughout the maze-like glade,
her cane appearing quite dim against the bright kelly green color of the
grass beneath her. It had been in her plans that morning to escape her
hell-hole of a house/job, and while she wasn't sure exactly where she was
headed, she knew that she wanted it to be solemn and quiet. Hell, she had
even dressed the part of a winter day, and now it was all gone to waste.
Instead of being chilled to the bone by the nasty wind sweeping the island,
she almost felt hot in her long-sleeved blouse and black pants. And don't
you dare think for a minute that she wouldn't have high-tailed it out of there
at the first sign of this optimistic haven, she would have! There was just the
problem of... well, how did she get here, again?

Yep, that's right folks, she was lost.

This both annoyed and disappointed the dark haired doctor, as she had
always felt her directional skills were top notch. Now... well they were seeming
a bit not. It caused her to stop, a frustrated look on her face, before frantically
looking around, back and forth, front and behind, before giving up. What the
bloody hell? Was this some sort of cosmic karma getting her back for her
lifelong career of pissing people off? Had the goddess or something like
her decided that it was too much and had trapped her in this area, hoping
that the smiling blossoms before her would change her ways forever?

Nope, not happening.

Stubbornly, the woman stood there, glaring up at the sky. "I see what you're
trying to do and, heh, well... It's just not gonna work. So kindly send me a sign,
or something, and let me get the hell out of here!" After her rather nasty
outburst, a few minutes passed, then some more, and there were no signs.
There wasn't even a passing leaf, and it was quite frustrating. A few more
minutes passed before a bush nearby began to ruffle. It was quiet at first,
then louder. Madelena raised an eyebrow, watching the small piece of
shrubbery jiggle back and forth. Hell, if there was a cougar in there, she
had nowhere to go. After all, whatever deity ruled this island had probably
been planning this all along, right? Oh well. She braced herself for the attack,
not really surprised in the way things were turning out. And then...

"Woof!"

From behind the bush, a chubby, short little dog rolled out, stopping near the
doctor's feet. She stared down in wide-eyed shock. "You're...not a
cougar. You're just a little sausage with legs." Now, her soft spot had always
been animals, and this dog was no exception. The black and tan creature
slowly rolled to its feet, smiling up at the woman and wagging its short little tail.
While it was in her natural instinct to reach down and ruffle his hair, she knew
that immediately after she did that, he would have to come home with her. Her
heart didn't feel much for humans, but when it came to fat little dogs, well...
it softened a bit. Turning on her heel, she started off, hoping to escape his
puppy-eyed stare and make it home. Still, his whining stopped her in her tracks,
making her turn back and look down at the canine. "Fine... you can
come with me. Just make sure you don't eat all of my food."

And so, her day seemed to actually have some meaning, and just as she came
to that realization, the trees seemed to open up and reveal the way home she
had been looking for all along. Had that been there all along? Hobbling towards
the exit, the woman actually smiled to herself, the chubby little dog following
closely behind her.

[/dohtml] |
