Winter 25th Year 4

Mu walked along the snowy winter path leading toward the estate with a sense of accomplishment, a carefully wrapped box tucked under his right arm. A small smile lingered on his face, relaxed and boyish in appearance. He hoped this encounter wouldn’t be all too awkward. Most girls he’d known usually weren’t pleased when they met him, for some reason or another. That and he was a little nervous as it was. After all, he’d always been the quiet type when it came to the opposite gender.

He’d never personally met this “Lyra Lockette” girl, but with some careful observation and people-watching, it hadn’t been all too difficult to figure out who she was. First off, he’d once heard someone call her by name, so he knew that this was, indeed, the right girl. For another, she was always coming to and from the Chrysocolla Estate, so it was safe to assume she worked and probably lived there. It was this information that led him to where he stood now: loitering outside the great estate, hoping to run into his secret Santa partner. He wondered how she had planned to find him had he not sought her out.

The young man began to fiddle idly with the bright red bow that topped his gift, twirling an end of it around his finger. Ah, yes, it was the item that sat inside this box that made him so proud. He had finished it just the night before, having chopped the wood himself just a few days ago. Each letter of Lyra Lockette’s name was intricately cut and sanded in the form of a single decorative name plaque, complete with a star at the end. Or, he supposed, it could also serve as a paperweight. Whichever way she chose to use it didn’t matter. He had enjoyed making it.

Slightly restless, Mu turned his attention over to the blanket of white that covered the area. Lacking a shovel, he began to use his feet to kick and scrape at the ground, clearing a small area in front of the building. It wasn’t much, but it was something.
