  • As promised by the many advertisements the Mayor of Obsidian had posted around the entire village, Thomas opened his doors at exactly 5:00p.m and could hardly contain the excitement bursting within that little body of his. He, and the maids, had done a splendid job of setting up all the different decorations for the event, especially the glamorous tree which was so tall it nearly touched the roof. Sparkling in blinking, colorful lights, with fake white snow and glitters abound, it was truly a sight to see. Presents of all sizes, shapes, and colors were scattered about the huge decorated tree, assumed to be "give aways" for later on in the night when the games began.

He had pulled out the extra long dining table for this momentous occasion, the dark wood lengthened out in the center of the room, adorned in a deep red table cover. The plates and silverware were already neatly put into place, the two maids of the household doing a fabulous job this evening. Now he was sure that they'd gone scurrying up to their rooms in order to get dressed for the dinner. Poor Blaise had one large deal of a dinner to cook, and the Mayor was beginning to fear he wouldn't have time for anything else than slaving over the oven. He would of offered help, but he had long since learned that the brilliant chef liked cooking his meals alone.

So, instead, he popped open one of the aged wine bottles and poured himself a drink. Cheers to the Holiday and the New Year!

Oh, joy.

Nathaniel Elgin was and always has been known as a Scrooge when it came to the holiday season. What could he say? 'Jolly' was just simply not something that he would or could ever pull off. The cheer, the laughter, the sickening sweetness - it all left a bitter taste in his mouth.

So, that was why he could not quite understand just what he was doing here. Wearing a red Santa Claus hat.

"Oh, how lovely," Zephyr said in his ear as she took his arm, linking it with her own. "Really, you are just so precious in that hat of yours, Nathaniel. If only your father could see you now." The brunette giggled before she swiftly bounced away, fully aware of the haranguing her cousin would do if she stuck around. The young man glared after her, his hate-filled eyes watching as her hair swished almost weightlessly, and as her long white dress danced around her legs as she skipped. These sorts of things were precisely what she enjoyed - he honestly resented how much she enjoyed the holiday spirit... especially since she often dragged him into 'sharing' it.

Standing with his arms crossed, the stuffy Elgin boy shuffled over to the wall and leaned against it. Perhaps he could simply breeze through the night over here in the corner. No one would speak with him, right? Then he would be able to avoid any insufferable conversation with these pepped up morons. Folding his arms across his chest, he glared at the tall, glitzy tree nearby where Zephyr - and that annoying blonde man - were adding their gifts to the accumulating pile underneath. Nathaniel watched, unamused, as they arranged the boxes into various formations and towers like children with building blocks.

"Ah, what an exciting atmosphere." A small, gentle voice suddenly piped up at his side. Nathaniel cringed slightly and glanced out of the corner of his eye to see Evelyne. He was honestly indifferent to this woman - even after all this time with her - but he still wanted to be left alone. So he merely grunted, hoping she would go off to join her brother and his cousin... but, unfortunately for him, this rarely worked with the blind woman, who simply chuckled and added, "Not much of a holiday man, are you...?"

"How did you guess," he grumbled sarcastically.

The French woman grinned and gingerly settled down against the wall next to him. "But, if you're here anyway then you must have even the tiniest amount, no...?" Nathaniel simply grunted again, and she simply continued again. Oh boy. But this time, he felt her hand slowly and hesitantly take hold of his own. "Hehe... then, I'll do my best to make things as enjoyable as possible for you, how about that?"

A sigh. This... would be a long night.

Everything was completly and utterly spotless in the large estate. No couch left unmoved, no pillow unfluffed, no coner left attended to, everything was perfect in every single way. From the bright green garlands drapping throughout the entire house, to the fake snowflakes hanging overhead making even the inside of the estate look like a winter wonder land. It had been a rather tiresome project climbing up and down ladders, moving things around, and decorating the large tree, over all it would be worth it, to see the smiling faces of the villagers along with her friends made all the hard work worth it.

The young woman stood with a fixed gaze up at glamorous tree looming over her. It was simply spendid in every way possible, the thickness of the braches, the shere brisk green color, and over powering scent that lingered there. The tree was perfect just like everything else, but somehow it stood out, maybe it was its size reaching all the way up to the ceiling, or maybe it was the snowflake oranments? No, Kin didn't know why her gaze was fixed on this tree, but try as she might the young woman could not turn away.

Thoughts racing on the tree the maid had failed to relize that guest had started to arrive, though she was supposed to greet them properly Kin stood fixed at the tree a bright smile speading across her features. Finally after what seemed for hours Kin was able to tear her gaze from the tree and turn around to survay the area. So far a few people arrived none that she knew, wait? wasn't that Evelyne? It was!

Easily swaying gracefully across the room Kin grinned in a pretty way over towards the blind women and a man she did not know. Well it was a party, and that ment meeting new people.

"evelyne! I'm so glad you made it, you look wonderful" offering her polite greetings the women turned to the stranger and offered the warmest of smiles. "And might i ask your name sir?"

Karri wasn’t exactly sure why she was here. After all, she being a newcomer, stomping snow off her boots in a strange doorway felt like trespassing. Muttering under her breath at the white fluff that caked her soles, she flipped a defiant lock of hair from out of her gaze. Really now, causing such a racket…looking like such a disgrace… Her ruby red scarf hung limp about her slim, pale neck, and her forest green trench coat felt heavy and depressing. The lass’s black gloved hands were steadily unclenching themselves. Her pastel colored hair was in much disarray, for a chilling breeze had flown by briefly on her way over. Strands were poking out in a rather frazzled appearing manner, and the obvious discomfort in her face only added to the effect.

Really, what possessed her to come?

Would folk tease her if she said it was the posters? They had been so charming, proclaiming of the nights advents with splendor. The paper had even promised food, and Karri had found little time to go down to the market these days. And there was the possibility of meeting some of the locals. After nearly a whole season in Obsidian, she still was lacking in the friend department. Hell, she really didn’t have a steady acquaintance! But all the same, she was determined. She was a personable enough type after all…

Shrugging off her full coat, the young woman placed it carefully, slowly on a rack for the job. Stripping off the tight, coal-dark gloves, she shoved them unceremoniously into her jacket pocket. After all, the hand-warmers weren’t of any sentimental value. Some cheep things from the last town stop. But the trench was a little more so. It had been her brother, Emmett’s, actually.

Forcing herself not to gape at the lavish decorations about her (how many ornaments were on that tree?!) she took some hesitant steps forward. A handful of people were already assembled. A short, round sort of man was downing a glass of something or another at the long dining table that took up much of the room. He appeared cheerful enough. He was grinning even while drinking, after all. A young brunette woman in a graceful, snow-white dress was flutting about. The gargantuan pine looming over all proclaimed the joy of the season, and Karri felt a little sinking sensation with a jolt. People were happy. This was the season of light, happiness, and joy. Gift-giving, family gatherings, songs of hope and wonder… To distract herself of the mental image of her parents, her brother, his wife, and their new baby daughter all exchanging hugs and smiles…she looked desperately over to a duo of women who appeared to be conversing. They were probably talking of all things dreamy and sugarplumy, no doubt…

Although she did find the tallish man, scowling, even with his arm linked with one of the chatting women, a bit out of place. Perhaps not all were as full of cheer as Karri had thought?

She look a few steps forward, one step back. Her eyes were hooked (strangely enough, on the dark-haired scowler), but it felt impolite to interrupt the group when they were already socializing. A blush came over her soft, freckle-sprinkled cheeks when she realized she was staring. How rude. Karri quickly looked elsewhere, yet longing to talk with someone to break the dull silence of her heart.

She seemed perpetually out of place.

Zephyr was, essentially, the opposite of her cousin. She was a piece of the puzzle here. She had grown up in these settings, after all - one could say such parties were her natural habitat. Although if she thought about it, she would be terribly frightened by such a fact... that was precisely why she worked so hard to absorb herself into her practiced persona.

"My, Aiden, you have yet to go straight to the food," she remarked with a light laugh. This caused the blonde - who had surprisingly donned a simple, untucked dress shirt with black pants for this occasion - to look up abruptly from the packages he had been arranging, his face that of a deer in headlights.

"You. Are. Right." He said, dashing off.

Meanwhile, Evelyne found herself jumping a bit out of surprise after hearing a familiar voice. "Evelyne! I'm so glad you made it, you look wonderful," Kin said, sparking a smile over her features. A light colour rose to her cheeks, and she absent-mindedly took her hand away from Nathaniel's to fiddle somewhat embarrassedly with her hair. The strapless dark green dress that Aiden had tailored was a bit much, she thought - it hugged her body in layers and just brushed the floor, leaving only a small bit of her plain, black heels visible. It felt too formal, especially with the jewellery that hung from her ears and neck... really, her brother just had to include Zephyr into this?

"Ah, it's good to see you again, Kin," she said happily. Laughing sheepishly, she self-consciously drew her white wrap closer around herself. "Thank you, though I'd rather be wearing something a bit less formal. But, Aiden and Zephyr played dress up and I was their doll." Giving a small sigh, she shrugged it off with a tiny smile. "Anyway, happy holidays! I hope they didn't work you too hard in preparing everything...?"

While Evelyne greeted the short blonde woman, Nathaniel simply wrinkled his nose - this was precisely what he wanted to avoid. His visible distaste deepened as this stranger turned towards him and asked his name. "Nathaniel," he grunted somewhat absently, looking away to show that he was not interested in any conversation with her. When he did, his gaze fell on another female just as she looked away, apparently embarrassed. Nathaniel raised an eyebrow and began to wonder what was wrong with her; but before he could really think about it, he felt Evelyne let go of his hand.

As she began to engage this girl in conversation, he smirked, quickly gathering all current factors and concluding that he had a very good opportunity to escape. Nathaniel, perked up slightly by this brilliant plan of his, smiled graciously at Evelyne and this other person - Kin, was it? - and dipped his head apologetically. "If you will excuse me, ladies, I have someone to see." Giving Kin an acknowleding nod, he made his way over towards the girl nearby and stopped in front of her. The grin from earlier was gone and his face was stony and serious as he spoke to this stranger.

"Pretend your speaking to me," he ordered. He just had to keep up this little charade long enough to convince Evelyne and Kin that he was busy with someone he knew, which would then cause them to lose interest in him, and allow him to be free of socializing.

Karri had just turned her blushy gaze in the other direction when movement caught the corner of her eye. The man she had been observing had vacated. She told her brain to pay no mind, although it longed to see where the object of her interest had wandered off to. She forced herself to be absorbed in the monumental pine tree that proclaimed itself in front of her; It wasn’t that difficult, seeing how lovely it was. But even as the young lass had just made up her mind to waltz over to the large, steaming buffet not a stones throw away, a voice grabbed her attention. A voice that snuck up from behind and snatched away her previous focus.

"Pretend you're speaking to me," it demanded.

Jumping in the slightest, glassy eyes growing wide, Karri flung herself around to the new arrival. It was with a start that she realized the man from moments before now stood a few feet away, looking down upon her with stern eyes. His face was unmoving and unemotional, rather statue-like. If she hadn’t known better, she would have thought him never to have been speaking in the first place. Didn’t you usually have some sort of expression when conversing?

E-excuse me?” Karri mumbled, stuttering only in the slightest. She felt her eyebrows quirk up in surprise, and her mouth raise into an awkward half-smile. Her right hand rose to her neck subconsciously, to fiddle with the scarf that usually hung there. It was with disappointment and annoyance that she remembered it was hanging on a peg on the other side of the room. While the man and his sullen self had intrigued her from afar, now when he was actually here she felt a bit intimidated. He was several inches taller than her, and she had to tilt her head backwards a smidge to see him proper. Looking him dead in the eye, hands no longer grasping at empty hair about her collar, she spoke with a little more confidence. “May I ask who you are, at least? Or is this some sort of emergency?

The hint of sarcasm was easily noticed, but it didn’t mean any offence. Karri found his cold gaze, in both color and emotion, a bit unnerving. But a bit of fire had lit in her chest. Was it just because she was actually talking to another? Or her pride wanted to make itself known to this commanding figure? Who knew.

Evelyne looked positively gorgeous, taking a step back to admire the crafty needle work done by none other then the loud blond himself. Glancing over her quickly up and down Kin gave a smile of approval to herself. Yes, the dress's hem was nice and even, the green color matched Evelyne's skin tone, and the gown seemed to hug her curves in just the right way, making her look even prettier then usual. Moving back to her orginal spot right next to the elder women's side, incase Evelyne could not quite hear her over the noise, which was rather silly when she thought about it seeing there was barley any background noise at all.

"Oh...yes..." momentarily pondering over what she had just agreed to, something seemed to snap suddenly and the look on her face said that exactly. Hasitly holding up her hands in protest, tiny face going a shade lighter then the dress she was wearing. "Oh! No! It was no work at all, just another day in the Estate..." the sentance didn't seem to stop, it seemed to run on into a small chuckle only to be slowly given up on seeing nobody else besides herself was laughing.

"Actually, I like keeping busy. I get so fidgety when I'm not doing anything, the time goes by so slowly." Letting out a sigh Kin once again gave a pretty giggle. "Happy Holidays to you too Evelyne, and you Mr...Nathaniel? Its a pleasure to meet you. My name is Tsuyayaka Kinmokusei, of course you can just call me Kin, everyone does."

Watching in pure wonder as Nathaniel introduced himself and without a single word excused himself from the two girls to go meet somebody he seemed to know. Lips pursing in what could only be pure annoyance, Kin watched as the man ingrossed himself in conversation. Tongue clicking in disapprovel her attention was once again on Evelyne.

"My, I'm not to sure if that was rude or not, was Mr. Nathaniel your escourt Evelyne?" Shrugging slightly Kin reached over taking the green dress in her hand. "Oh well, my this dress is beautiful! Oh but I do wish you would have come to me, I would have loved to create a dress just for you." At the comment about being too formal Kin seemed to wave it off absent mindedly. "One can never be Over dressed Evelyne, only underdressed. Besides, when do we get to really dress up?"

"E-excuse me?" Nathaniel, whose attention had been dedicated to finding a place to hide out, frowned down at the girl as his attention was drawn to her. He wrinkled his nose, displeased to find that she was making actual conversation, rather than pretending as he had directed her to. "May I ask who you are, at least? Or is this some sort of emergency?" The taller of the two huffed quietly out of irritation before he glanced over his shoulder, not bothering to respond to her just yet. He saw the short blonde woman's head turn back towards Evelyne, confirmation that he had, indeed, escaped.

... From them, anyway.

Then, he looked back to the stranger standing before him. Nathaniel merely blinked at her, studying her features and listening to her words echo in his head. Really, he couldn not say he cared much for her way of speaking to him. Nor was he impressed by her somewhat frazzled appearance, either. He merely blinked at her for a moment before heaving a sigh, folding his arms over his chest and shaking his head slowly. "I suppose it cannot be helped," he muttered. He felt... wrong just walking away after his identity had been asked. Besides, maybe she would recognize his last name (unlikely, but he could always hope) and fall to his feet. Or something.

"Nathaniel Elgin," he replied curtly, lips tight and his expression unamused. "My business is nothing you need to concern yourself with. Also, if it was some emergency, I think I would have the courtesy not to overwhelm your brain with such distressing matters." The words came easily to him as usual, but his next course of action did not seem to be quite as quick to form. The dark-haired man continued to survey the area for a place to hide and... found nothing.

Well, maybe he could just stand here and send this girl away. Turning his gaze down towards her again, he waved a hand. "Go along now, I am in the clear," he said rather absently, "I am sure you are dying to primp yourself in the facilities. Fix your hair or something."

"Oh! No! It was no work at all, just another day in the Estate..." Evelyne smiled warmly, nodding. Not an altogether surprising answer, she had to admit. She could only wonder, though, how many things kept Kin - and the rest of the Estate staff - busy from day to day. It was such a big place, wasn't it? So many chores to be done, so many tasks to be taken care of...

The blind woman was pulled out of her thoughts when she suddenly became aware of the lack of warmth at her hand. She blinked, frowning slightly as Nathaniel exchanged a blunt introduction with Kin. Distress suddenly bubbled up within her as she tried to get an opening to interject - she had a feeling that her housemate would soon be running away after his meeting with her friend. Unfortunately, before she could get a chance to say something, Mr. Elgin had already dismissed himself, much to Kin's apparent disapproval.

"Ahh... darn," she sighed. Rubbing the back of her neck, she turned her face towards Kin and shook her head. "No, Nathaniel is a housemate of mine. He paid for the upgrade, actually... unfortunately I sort of failed at keeping him with me and helping him out throughout the night." Evelyne's shoulders slumped slightly as a frown tugged at her lips, a sense of disappointment creeping over her. But, Kin's words managed to keep this feeling from completely overwhelming her.

She blinked as Kin spoke and, as the words reached her ears, her frown slowly became a grin again as her mind was brought off the subject of her apparent failure. "Ehehe, I suppose that's true. It is sort of nice to do this sometimes, as long as I don't become too out of place or something." Shrugging a bit, she continued to smile, and turned her head from side to side. "So, Kin, do you want to be a wallflower this evening or do you want to see what's fun to do around here...?"
