The man strode with a mission, intent in every step he took with his boots. The estate loomed before him, so cheerful and bright that it almost made him want to gag. He ascended the steps, throwing the doors open with almost no regard for how hard they struck the walls. He stepped forward, glancing around the interior. There was no one to be found at all.

Roman, with his six foot frame, towered over many of the low coffee tables in the halls he passed. He didn't care that he was technically trespassing and breaking and entering both at the same time. He simply wanted to find the man in charge, now.

"Hello?" he yelled, his voice booming through the halls. "I'm looking for the mayor!"

  • Mayor Thomas and his personal guest, Cole MacFarland, were currently enjoying a rather invigorating game of chess. A man such as Cole would describe it more along the lines of “intense” but, alas, through the Mayor’s point of view it was refreshing, fun, and, well, invigorating. It was no wonder that the short, pudgy man burst out laughing when his adversary easily moved his black king into position before his own white one and casually announced, “Checkmate.”

“My boy, you certainly have the upper hand when it comes to the game of chess.” Thomas exclaimed, reaching up to adjust his small, round glasses that were perched upon his rather large nose. He held no ill feelings toward his guest, as his words were as genuine as the large, goofy grin across his rounded face.

Cole, himself, dawned a smile of his own and casually sat back in his chair, crossing one booted foot over the other. “Not as supremely as you bargain,” he answered knowingly, eyebrows arching. And, at this, the Mayor shouted once more, the joke passing between them as though they were suddenly very old friends whom knew all the secrets of one another.

Both faces fell the moment a loud yell echoed down the hall, reaching both he and Cole. Thomas looked quite shocked, his mouth agape as he literally jumped from his chair with an “oh my!” expression drawn tight against his face. Cole MacFarland, on the other hand, merely blinked and seemed utterly unmoved as he watched the Mayor trot his way down the narrow hallway in search of the visitor.

“Good heavens!” Mayor Thomas exclaimed as he came around the corner and almost crashed directly into the man who had been, and still was, yelling throughout the halls. Squinting through the lenses of his small glasses, he paused for the merest of a moment before he went on to say, “Well, you’ve come to the right place, m’boy. I’m the Mayor of Obsidian, what can I do for you?”

By this time, Cole slowly came to a stop beside the Mayor and propped his shoulder up against the wall. Regardless of whether or not this situation had anything to do with him, Cole had decided he ought to give him service as a bodyguard of some sort. After all, Mr. Thomas was a fairly short man, and blind as a bat when it came to dealing with the wrong sort of people. He couldn’t have anything happen to the man when he was still of importance to him and his business plan.

Roman had been in the middle of bellowing another question when a small ruckus directly behind him caused him to turn, then blink and look down. A man, rather roundish and only up to his waist, was standing there, straightening his glasses as he exclaimed that he was indeed the mayor. However, Roman was more worried about the taller, silver haired man who also came around, standing behind the mayor and peering at Roman with a searching eye.

Right. Business time.

"Sirs, I'm Inspector Roman Sar, Houston PD. I apologize if I interrupted anything," he said, in a tone that hinted that he really wouldn't, to be honest, "but I have an inquiry of great importance. I have special clearance to be here, sirs, because, as you may or may not know, the Houston PD has been working with the Jamaican Armed Forces to put an end to crime in the Gulf. As it turns out, we recently raided a warehouse and found several files referring to a Matthew Reno, a local there. Our contacts say he's currently up here, and as such, I am pursuing him."

He glanced back up to the taller man for a moment, feeling the suspicion pour off both him and Roman himself, before looking back down at the mayor and continuing "You wouldn't happen to know anyone by that name, would you sir? Or noticed anyone strange here, like they were from the Gulf area?"

  • The Mayor’s heartwarming smile went down like a sunken ship, his normally small beady eyes growing large in alarm and confusion. Within matter of seconds, Mayor Thomas had shifted from overjoyed to crestfallen. “My boy, certainly you are not suggesting that a residents of my village is a criminal?” At first he sounded disjointed, or dazed, but by the end of the sentence his bushy brown brows had fallen down over his eyes and he was practically glaring up at the officer as though he had just insulted his family.

Cole MacFarland remained silent, his mind having already worked the pieces of information and had come to the conclusion of who, exactly, this man was talking about. This village was quite small and consisted mostly of a mixture of white and Asian population. He had glimpsed the night of the Masquerade the man which this officer was speaking of, but he severely doubted the Mayor had been paying enough attention that night to observe the same.

“Let him search the village,” Cole said uncaringly, with a light shrug of his shoulders. Mayor Thomas whirled around at the suggestion, looking somewhere between outraged and disbelieving. Surprisingly, the Mayor seemed to possess some sort of form of sensible thinking because he paused a moment to think over the situation. In that instant, Cole understood that the Mayor did realize this officer was going to search the village regardless of what transpired here today.

“What is Matthew Reno’s crime?” Thomas finally asked, squinting up at Inspector Roman through his small, rounded glasses. Cole, too, glanced up at the inspector and arched his eyebrows. He was finding this all rather amusing.

Though the stubby mayor hadn't realized exactly what Roman was saying, the taller man behind him had almost immediately. Roman squinted at him as he came to the conclusion that this man knew he wouldn't let minor annoyances such as denial stop him from hunting down criminals. The mayor, however, seemed to wisen up, and Roman, thorough as he was, retrieved a small notepad from the interior of his jacket, flipping it open to Matthew Reno's page and reading off the various felonies he was suspected of.

"The files have referenced Matthew Reno as being guilty of involvement in the production of illegal substances, such as marijuana, cocaine and unlicensed tobacco, a count of robbery from his superiors, and twenty-six counts of manslaughter with an illegally procured, unlicensed military firearm."

Roman flipped the page, going onto the statistics as he continued "Reno has been reported to be dark skinned, around six feet tall, and estimated to be in his mid twenties. Eye color brown, no tattoos, several scars on his back and legs, and an affinity for wearing warm clothing. Any matches? Keep in mind, Reno is only a recent, and if I may add, illegal addition to your town, mayor. At most, he's probably only been here a month."

  • In all truth, at that very moment the Mayor of Obsidian looked as though he were about to faint. His entire face had drained of color, becoming a ghostly white, and he lifted one of his chubby hands up to his forehead, lightly swaying back at the loss of balance. Certainly, it wasn’t true! There was an explanation for this! The Mayor’s mind roared in his head, ever defending those who had decided to move here, to his beloved island of happiness.

“I will hear his side of the story,” Thomas, after a few moments of silence, finally spoke in a no-nonsense manner. Standing straight at his short stature, he’d taken on the face of a man Cole had never once seen before. Although, as he glanced down at the hands at his side, Cole also noticed the light tremor that had caused the short man to curl his hands into fists. “I will accompany you on your search, inspector Sar, and I will speak to him before any action is taken.”

Cole remained silent, still leaning his shoulder against the wall, and wondered what this new Mayor was truly capable of. And, more importantly, he thought as he lifted his gaze up to the inspector, what would be the answer to the Mayor’s demands? He had the certain suspicion that if this inspector Roman Sar refused to comply that Mayor Thomas would not hesitate to throw him off the island. Cole smiled then, finding the thought rather pleasing. He’d had his fair trouble with the police in the past, and the trail back in England had not gone in his favor despite the fact that he’d been innocent. In a sense. Needless to say, he no longer regarded the law as highly as he should have.

Roman was taken aback by the mayor's sudden change in attitude, and his grip on the notepad tightened, wrinkling the pages slightly. This was a dangerous job, and Roman, repelling as he was, did not want to have to account for any civilian casualties. This was supposed to be his crowning goal, his own individual achievement that would help the Houston PD win their fight to have the National Guard allowed onto Jamaican soil, where they could then flush crime completely from the streets of Jamaica.

Since his time in the Marines, Roman had learned a single lesson in his lifetime, and it had saved his life countless times over: Trust only yourself. This man wished to interfere with his investigation, Roman couldn't, and wouldn't, let himself be held responsible for whatever happened.

Finally, he nodded and said, reluctantly "Fine, mayor. It's your town. I'm just a visitor. Let's go, shall we?"

A quick thought hit him, and he also added "Mister mayor, I almost forgot. I am armed with a standard sidearm and have orders to shoot to wound if Reno is also armed. Hopefully you won't mind that?"
