For those who're silly, "fingerprint" is a method of protein separation, combining electrophoresis and chromatography. :imwithstupid:
You'll notice some humor, here and there. Since it's quite a real-life-like context, I can focus more on jokes and relationships, rather than on action. ;)

Britshi, Turkshiye and Cynder belong to Britshi.
Marik belongs to his creator, MarikYoshi.
All other characters are my own creation.

Prologue : Scientific Minds

Brainy, the green yoshi, shook his head; his black spikes cast moving shadows on the back of his neck.
-Something must've gone wrong... probably the extraction process. I'll go get another couple of samples... and some more Coomassie dye. Gracy, could you bring in some clean material in the meantime?"
The white yoshi named Gracy nodded. "I think we should wear new masks and gloves. It might be contaminated by us."
-Good idea," the green one muttered, following her suggestion.

This time, the results were more consistent. Brainy sighed and winked at Gracy, then adjusted the recorder.
-Research 250-A, subject 44, log 28. The result of the fingerprint test indicates the presence of foreign proteins; more exactly, koopa proteins. Knowing that the yoshi team's analysis gives the same results as the koopa team's, and yoshi organisms being unable to synthesize said proteins..."
He took a breath, then finished: "...it is confirmed that the subject synthesizes them. Therefore, the koopa team's transgenesis experiment seems to have succeeded."
He paused the recorder and handed it over to his colleague.
-List of detected koopa proteins," Gracy added, "follows..."

Closing his home's door, Brainy sighed.
That sure was a long day, he thought. I should come and visit those guys sometime. Always being the villains in those games... it's not too easy.
A few centuries ago, koopas had found a way of breeding non-sentient primates, replacing shyguys that were common in yoshis' diets. Thanks to them, Brainy could occasionally eat meat, without seeming immoral and feeling bad each time.

A familiar voice rose from the living room. "It's been a while, bro."
I know this accent! Brainy thought, as a smile crossed his face.
He entered the room, and walked up to the other green yoshi.
-Even locks don't resist you, bro," he said.
His brother, green with blonde hair and a British flag top, giggled. They both knew he had a double of the key to Brainy's studio.
-I missed you, Brit," Brainy added.
They hugged each other.

Britshi -Brit for short- was in his mid-teenager period, about five years younger than Brainy - who was already a young man. He could be a pain in the tail sometimes; but a friendly kind of pain in the tail.

-You doing good things, Brainy?" Brit asked sarcastically. "Or you're too busy being jealous of the koopas?"
Thinking of some of his colleagues, Brainy snorted. "More like... busy being accused of 'supporting our rivals'."
Just because he was admiring their early awakening, their hidden thirst for knowledge and passion about making discoveries...

Not so far away, in a dark corner next to a cemetary -where people wouldn't like to venture-, a small group was planning things out. They knew about a nearby lab making experiments on non-sentient animals, and they didn't appreciate the idea at all...

w00t!
First part contains personal experience... sort of.

Chapter 1 - Part 1/2 : From Disaster To Disaster

The article he was interested in was somehow glowing in the dark room. The most important quotes were even more visible.
"New Remains Discovered... Paleontologist Oldfeather explains: 'they belong to an unknown, bipedal primate species. We decided to call it Australopithecus'... the team is excited, as these remains might be proof that the Shyguy race once had taller cousins..."
Fascinating, Brainy thought, shaking his head. Australopithecus... Might as well revise our Tree of Evolution.

He folded the paper, laid it on the table, got up... and fell forwards.
He tried getting back up, but his balance seemed to have changed. Paying attention to his feelings, he noticed his gravity center had moved.
It has moved forwards, it seems... as if my tail wasn't anymore...
He then noticed that he wasn't feeling his tail.
Not daring to make a move, he glanced sideways; he saw his brother Britshi, his sisters Turkshiye and Selene. Britshi was holding a mirror.
And Brainy looked at the primate, who stared back at him from inside the mirror.
It's exactly like the picture in the article, without all the fur (save from the top of the head), with pinkish skin, smaller face, longer nose, bigger forehead...

-Am I... dreaming?" He asked, panting with fear.
-Afraid not, brother," Brit replied. "But you still need to wake up."

Now that this thought had crossed his mind though, Brainy could clearly feel that something was wrong. The events don't make sense, and the sensation either.
He simply forced his eyes open...
____________________

However, a few minutes later, the images he was watching on the television screen as well as the words spoken by the male voice were consistent. So was the sensation of chilling that ran down his spine.
"...claimed that ReGenesis was doing animal research, and that they did not 'approve of these actions so against the yoshi nature'; as stated by the leader who preferred not to speak in front of our cameras. They are launching handheld devices against the walls, as you can see..."

Brainy's jaw dropped as he watched the rioters swing their poison - it was actually fuel, but he thought the metaphor was quite fitting.
Do they have any idea they're destroying scientific evidence? Most of the stuff they're burning is completely unrelated to animal research!

He grabbed the couch's arm. He couldn't let them destroy everything.
Maybe I should wake Britshi up. He'll be worried if he doesn't see me home tomorrow...
But then he noticed his brother would probably try to prevent him from doing what he was planning to do.

Without turning the television off, Brainy went to the hall. There, grabbing his saddle (useful for keeping the stuff he could save) and slipping his shoes on, he quietly opened the door.
Once outside, he spun around to face a steel locker, right beside the door. He entered the numbers on the keypad, which opened with a click.
Brainy pulled out his hoverboard, quickly opened the trunk in the body, took the holographical projector and water spray out, put the projector into the locker and the spray back inside the trunk.

When Brainy stepped on one of the foot pads, the engines (which were using Light Addition-Based Impulse, a technology copyrighted to yoshis this time) lit up and started whizzing. A muffled buzz indicated that the field generator was on, which was confirmed by the board's lifting above the ground.
When it was stabilized, he could finally put his other foot on the board. The foot pads shifted their surfaces to grab his shoes better.

He then lained forwards, causing the board to move.
The main engine wasn't enough, so he twisted his feet so they were parallel to the board's motion and ducked; thus activating the twin engines at either side of the hoverboard.
I hope I won't be late...

Thank you very much for not bothering to comment.

Chapter 1 - Part 2/2 : From Disaster To Encounter

The blue yoshi kid swung rocks at the windows that were still intact, since they didn't have any more bottles of fuel left. His black and white sweater as well as his dark blue pants waved loosely in the hot wind.
It won't be long until the cops come, he thought. But we've planned it all out.
A few minutes ago, their leader had broken the lens of the camera, claiming it was 'an obstacle to their cause'.

Something exploded nearby, pulverizing the wall. The shockwave knocked the kid off his feet, sending him on the ground.
He rolled aside, keeping his eyes only narrowly open. Despite the fact he was half deaf (even before the explosion, he already had hearing problems) he could've sworn someone else had fallen beside him.

He looked at the spot; something that looked like a suitcase, or maybe a board, lied there. It had some kind of flap, and it seemed clear to the yoshi kid that it was a trunk.
He then turned his head towards the large hole in the wall.

That's when the blue yoshi kid with black spikes noticed the green yoshi youngster with black spikes. He gasped in horror as the green one dove through the flames erupting out of the gap.

-Are you okay, Marik?" yelled one of the other rioters, a red yoshi wearing a black trenchcoat. "We need to go, the cops will be there soon!"
He helped Marik back on his feet.
-I'm okay, yeah," Marik assured, before running towards the gap.
He ignored the other member's shoutings; they weren't friends after all, just people who shared the same opinion about animal research. His 'comrade' didn't stay for long anyway, he was already running away when Marik looked behind him.

Closing his eyes and trying to manage with the dense smoke burning his nose, the blue yoshi kid jumped after the green one.
If he's an innocent and foolish guy, I'll save him and get away without going to jail. If he's one of those researchers, I'll make him suffer myself and go to jail with pride.
____________________

Brainy sprayed more water in front of him. He would be running out of water soon.
He took another sharp turn... only to find flames blocking the way.
Nothing to hope from the Hybridation labs then.
Choking, he backed off and took another direction.

His prority was to retrieve the genetically altered animals, starting with the hardest ones to remake. But the rioters seemed to have calculated their attack with deadly precision, hitting wherever it was necessary.

He could finally find five of rats in a cage, in the Transfection sector. Three of them had been killed by the two others, who were now fighting eachother fiercely.
They could be fighting for survival if they could escape from the cage.
Brainy sprayed a small mist, wetting the rats' fur so they would have a slight protection against fire.
It also confused them a little, stopping the fight and allowing Brainy to look into the fridge. He grabbed a bottle containing chloroform, and held his breath while he soaked the cage's floor. Within a few seconds, the rats were put under.

Still holding his breath, Brainy took the cage by the sides and ran into the dense cloud of smoke. His eyes were tearing to wash off the thick particles and keep the toxic gases away.
He slid to a stop as the ceiling collapsed, blocking the corridor.
He darted to the opposite direction, grabbed a ladder's bars and climbed up.

He had to make a compromise; lower floors were dangerous because of the upper floors collapsing, but at the same time, fire always went up.
As always, Brainy trusted his intuition. It had never deceived him so far. The roof sounds safer right now...
He kept going up.
____________________

Marik's way was blocked by debris. He had no choice but run upstairs.
Choking and wheezing, he almost fell forward, but didn't give up. He kept on, and soon reached the roof.
When he was clear from the smoke, he looked around him; the top was okay for now, only a few cracks running across the concrete.

He approached a gap in the floor, where he could smell something like ethanol... or chloroform... mixed with the smoke. When he came close enough, he felt the heat on his teenager face, and could hear wheezes.
Without thinking, he kneeled down...
____________________

Just as he was about to lose consciousness, Brainy suddenly couldn't feel the weight of the cage anymore. After groping for it without success, he paused... then his survival instincts overcame his confusion and he climbed some more.
Another explosion from the lower floors shook the ladder, and Brainy's hand slipped.

But he didn't fall; that's when he noticed something was holding his wrist. A hand!
His thoughts were split up between hope of getting away and concern for the other one. He or she is saving me, but... doesn't seem to have any idea of what the heck he or she is doing!
He cooperated with his rescuer anyway. Just to make things easier.

But the stranger -a blue male, appearently no older than Britshi- was now rolling on the floor, making unusual noises. Casting a Heal spell on himself to clear his thoughts, Brainy paid attention to the sound. He can't breathe!
Quickly sitting up, he pulled up the black and white sweater, and applied his hands on the yoshi kid's bare chest. He then cast Heal again.
To Brainy's deepest relief, the blue yoshi coughed and panted.

But there wasn't enough time, as the ground below their feet shoke and the cracks grew wider and wider.
-We need to get away!" Brainy yelled. "We can jump from behind; we'll land on the storage stronghold's roof. Come on!"
The yoshi kid nodded, grabbed the cage with the rats starting to wake up, and followed Brainy. When they came to the edge, they looked down to judge the height difference; it was acceptable.

-Uhh..." The blue kid hesitated for a moment. "We jump at three, okay?"
-Why not thirty-three?" Brainy asked with a serious expression.
As part of the concrete behind them collapsed, alerting them, they jumped together without counting.

Chapter 2 : Emergency Room

The yoshi kid sighed. "What 'bout you? What the heck were you doin' in there anyway?"
Both of them were covered in bandages, with various injuries and burns beneath them. Fortunately, there was nothing worse than second-degree burns, a few cuts and scratches.
Marik still winced at the pain when he turned his head to look at the other yoshi - they were sitting on the same hospital bed. He then decided to turn himself entirely, letting only one leg swinging down and the other resting on the bed; so did the green teenager.

Before responding, Brainy looked at the teenage rioter. The kid was blue in color; he wore a black and white sweater (with a diagonal separation between the black field and the white), a pair of dark blue pants, and white tennis shoes. Who could've guessed such a young yoshi could cause such a big trouble, then accomplish something so foolish and courageous?
Marik did the same to him. He stared at the green youngster's standard-style red saddle, and his standard-style blue shoes. Nothing too original, at least about his looks; but I've known people whom I thought were average, yet turned out good or bad after all.
And they both had black spikes.

-I would tell you," Brainy answered eventually, "but your blood pressure would go too high. With your tachycardia, I doubt it'd be a good idea…"
The blue kid rolled his eyes, trying not to move his neck too much. "Well, after sayin' it like that… better admit it openly, y'know."

Brainy resisted a sudden urge to scratch a burn over his nose - not only he wouldn't feel his hand through the bandages, but even if he did, it would only worsen the pain and itching sensation.
-I work in the Plasmidic Recombination, Protein Analysis and Purification departments. Basically, we get bacteria to synthesize proteins, then purify them to be used to treat disorders from genetical origin. We also run tests on samples from the Transgenesis department, to check the--"

Brainy stopped as the kid was blinking, visibly puzzled by his explanations.
-Just so you know… I'm not among the ones who use animals directly," he said, remembering what the press reporter was saying in the News. "I only work on molecules and bacteria; not tissues, nor even other kinds of cells."
The blue kid nodded slightly. "But you help'em, don'tcha?"
Brainy turned his head away to look sideways at the younger one: "Only occasionally, when things need to be checked several times. Otherwise, that's not what I do."

The youngster straightened up a bit. "Oh, by the way, I don't even know your name… I'm Brainy, but my family calls me Scientist."
-Brainy?" The blue yoshi giggled; "That's gotta be the weirdest name I've ever heard…"
He then stopped, uneasy, aware that he had let that one slip.
But Scientist chuckled in return: "Wait 'till you hear the others in my family!"
Relieved, the yoshi kid straightened too. "The name's Marik."
Scientist smiled widely. "Glad to meetcha, Marik."
-Same to you, Scientist."

Is anybody reading this at all? :'(

Chapter 3 : When Family Calls

-I always tell you to stop spendin' your time with those kids, Marik," said the female voice he was supposed to call his "mother".
-I know," the kid simply replied. "I'm sorry…"
-Don' gimme that apology thin', Marik. Don' tell me you're sorry, 'cause you're not. Y'know what? I won't even come and visit you today!"
That'd be awesome, Marik thought, leave me here, and see if I care…
But he didn't say a thing. He just let his foster mother express her feelings in the phone. He wasn't even listening to her - not that this deserved to be heard anyway.

Brainy wasn't doing much better. He was also on his cell phone, talking to his brother.

-What's gotten into you, Brainy?" Britshi sounded more worried than mad. "No need to be an expert, everybody knows that fire is lethal!"
-Brit, I've saved a couple of transgenic rats! Those animals are vital to research against--"
-Well, you're also vital to that research," Britshi snapped back, "whatever it is about! And unlike those rats, you can't be replaced; haven't you thought of that? Haven't you thought of us, your family?"
There was a short moment of silence, then Britshi sighed.
-I'm sorry, Scientist," he said. "I know how important this is to you. But you're also important to us, you know. I got carried away, but--"
-I deserved it, brother." Brainy sighed too, and added: "I should've thought about it… about you, and the rest of the family…"

Both conversations ended up well.
Marik's foster mother was relieved, despite her appearent indifference. As for Britshi, he was glad his brother was still alive and doing well. And it was obvious, in either case.

Once Brainy hung up, he turned to Marik.
The blue yoshi had already put his own phone back into his pocket, and was observing him with that cold glare. Except it made him look cuter - he looked like an infant trying to seem mean.
Save from the size, of course.

The green youngster took a deep breath.
-So… those who wore masks took down the cameras so the others don't get to be recognized and arrested either?" The anger had passed (he wasn't the kind to hold grudges) and was replaced by interest. "You obviously took your time to plan things out."
Marik's supposed-to-be evil look disappeared, and he giggled: "Whaddya think man, we're pros! It only failed in my case, 'cause you had to dive in there before my eyes, so I had to get in and save ya."
-You even had the police cars' patrolling schedule of the area."
The blue kid's eyes widened: "You saw that too?"
The scientist yoshi carefully got up and reached out for his burned saddle. Turning it upside-down, trying not to move too much (or his shoulders and arms would hurt horribly), he searched in the saddle. He pulled out a sheet of paper and held it out for the blue one to see.
-Usually," he explained, "we use this kind of table to identify enzymes. We study their activity and kinetics, then our computers compare the results with those listed in tables. This way, we can tell if someone has a mutation on a gene coding for an enzyme."
-Okay," muttered the blue one. "I'm not askin' for more… Just knowin' that you're not actually involved with animal abuse is okay with me."
Abuse? We're not using them out of lust or vanity, Brainy thought. We're using them for medical purposes!

Little did he know, ReGenesis wasn't just experimenting for medical purposes.
In particular, the rats he he had saved earlier. They were part of a research that was not being done to cure people…
____________________

-I'm positive, boss. He had the cage in his posession."
-Then
why didn't you take it at that moment, Rouchan?"
The person named Rouchan hiccupped. "I…"
Before she could tell her boss about all the journalists and cameras that were there, however, the deep and low-pitch voice of the masked figure uttered: "Nevermind, I don't wish to know."
The way his voice remained so calm was even scarier than if he sounded angry.
He kept on: "Since you're not capable of getting the rats yourself…" he lained towards the screen, causing Rouchan to back off instinctively: "…we'll get
the scientist yoshi to bring them to us."
He then waved a gloved hand, simply dropping: "Dismissed!" and cutting the communication.
Rouchan shivered, ashamed and relieved at the same time.

A belated birthday gift for WAY, a friend from the Yoshi Art Forums: a cameo of his persona.
Zephyr Enduro belongs to Wild_ARMs_Yoshi (a.k.a WAY), previously known as Fire_Emblem_Yoshi (or FEY).

Chapter 4 : Getting Risky Now

-So… that's how you two met eachother?"
Inspector Enduro (a yellow yoshi with white hair, wearing a red scarf over his uniform), sitting in the interrogation room, seems impressed. He keeps on: "You don't see rioters saving their sworn enemies often, you know."

As for Brainy, he was a bit apprehensive earlier, but now he's more relieved than anything else.
His teenager friend, also present in the room, has openly admitted being one of the rioters, saying it was better this way.
"I'm sure the Inspector will understand," he was saying.
And indeed, Inspector Zephyr Enduro understands.

Letting out a sigh of relief, Brainy nods.
-If this encounter had never happened," he points out, "there would've been genocide…"
-
Genocide!" Rouchan yells from the other end of the table. "We were trying to save our kind and the Koopas'!"
-By committing mass murder?" the scientist yoshi asks calmly.
-By restoring natural selection! Haven't you noticed how science has…"
-Natural! Really!"

Brainy gets up and walks around the room to relieve his stress.
-You think it's natural to use
transgenic animals to 'select the fittest'? Well, I don't believe so!"
The green yoshi stops in front of the room's door, then spins around, facing the three others; Marik, the inspector and Rouchan.
-You're only talking about cities. What if those rats multiplied, spreaded all over the planet, and killed villagers?"
His eyes narrow down as he points at Rouchan: "Villagers, Rouchan. People who've been living in the
most natural context you can imagine! Would you kill them too? They're still under pressure from natural selection, they don't need your 'help'!"

-Please," Inspector Enduro raises his hands to pacify him, "I can imagine how you're feeling, mister Fiction. But please don't let your feelings override your self-control!"
-Easier said than done," Brainy mutters. "You're not the one who lost a sister…"
-Will you please sit down, Mr. Fiction?"
Brainy shakes his head. "I need to move… or else I'll go crazy. I'm not gonna harm anyone if I keep standing, I promise."
He still glares at Rouchan, who flinches. He then adds: "After all, she was just a puppet in the other guy's hands."

The inspector clears his throat: "And then you started getting the phone calls? From the day following your hospitalization, to… four days later?"
Brainy nods, walking around the interrogation room again - but slower this time. "I didn't think it'd be so serious," he admits. "I just thought it was one of those amateurs, looking for an idiot to scare so he'd feel powerful or something."
He sighs loudly: "But then I've noticed that I didn't have my Intuition anymore, so I've started having doubts. When I started feeling my Intuition tickling me again… it was too late.
Inspector Enduro shakes his head. "There's no way you could've guessed that, mister Fiction. Even with some intuition, without clues, you couldn't have known."

Brainy and Marik exchange looks. Of course, very few people know about what Brainy calls his 'Intuition'. Most people think it's just his logic, but Brainy believes it's some sort of sixth sense. It's his guide when there's no appearent track to follow.
And it never fails him, especially if it's urgent… or if lives are threatened.

Inspector Enduro tilts his head forwards to encourage him to go on.

____________________

-No, I'm not impressed."
-But I'm not trying to imp--"
-What part of 'no' don't you get? You're not impressing me! They're just rats, nothing worth kidnapping someone for! If you don't stop now, I'll call the police!"
After a couple of seconds of silence, the voice on the other side said:
-Then I should probably let your sister persuade you instead."

A suspicious look on his face, Brainy awaited anxiously. He was starting to feel a familiar sensation in his stomach, which he couldn't quite identify yet.
Then he felt something clearly identifiable.
Shock.
At the whimper he could recognize so well.
-Brainy?"
The voice was familiar too.

The green youngster's eyes widened in horror as he faced the reality of the situation.
-Brainy, is it you?" insisted Selene, sobbing.
Yes, it was really her voice. Brainy could easily imagine the turqoise female yoshi, curled up in a corner, desperately grabbing onto the handset… or struggling, bound to a chair, laining towards it.
She must be scared beyond her limits! If they dare just laying their hands on her…
-Selene!" he gasped. "Oh, for the love of… did they harm you?"
-I came to see you and Britshi, but you were gone… I saw those strangers… they grabbed me… looked for something… asked me about two rats, but I didn't know anything… and… and…"

-That's enough, I think. Do you believe me now, former professor Brainy Fiction?
Brainy's upper lip twitched. He hissed through gritted teeth (the only thing he could do): "If you harm her in any way…
-You're powerless, mister Fiction. You're just a scientist. Without equipment, without help, you're completely lost.

Suddenly, it became crystal clear that this 'boss' didn't know him well.
Otherwise he should remember that Brainy knew some magic.
Not much, granted; just Dizzy (lighter version of a stunning spell) and Heal (which he had performed on Marik before they jumped off the collapsing building of ReGenesis). But he was still more than "just a scientist".
Besides, he had that Blade - basically a boomerang with an embedded blade. Brainy could control its flight if he focused hard enough.
He had also found the explanation for the sensation in his stomach earlier. It was his Intuition, returning slowly but surely.
For once, it would help him save a life… along with maybe thousands, or even millions of others.

-I'll be waiting for you and the rats, mister Fiction. I trust that you won't disappoint me.
It sounded more like a threat than anything like trust.
The voice then cut the communication.

Having dropped his magazine since long, Marik asked the green one: "So it was real?"
Brainy stared blankly at him.
____________________

Next morning, both their beds were empty, neatly arranged. The same note was left on each one, with their respective occupants' handwritings.
Just a simple sentence: If our families don't hear about us within a week, call the police.
And their respective signatures.

Chapter 5 : Research The Facility

-Scientist…" Marik's voice was clear despite the static. "They'll still call the police, y'know."
-Yeah, I know. But that 'boss' can't accuse me of anything, considering they would've called the police anyway."
With three members of 4A (All Against Animal Abuse) on his heels, the green young scientist moved as swiftly as possible among the burned remnants of ReGenesis. Gracy (Brainy's ex-partner) was doing the same with three other 4A members, as well as the blue teenage activist and his own 'boss'.

Overall, there were four teams sweeping the ruins.
Each team was organized the same way: one leader and one aide, followed by two back-ups; two flashlights pointing forwards and the two others sideways, four spears of light piercing through the dust and smoke. They were wearing dark hoods provided by 4A, also protected by goggles and filter masks Brainy had managed to save from the riot. Leaders were in direct contact with each other thanks to jaw communicators customized by 4A technicians, all teammates carried a neural disruptor each (conceived to stun without physically harming) stolen from the hospital. Each aide was carrying extra batteries for the flashlights and the disruptors as well.
It's illegal, Brainy thought, but right now we don't have time to worry about permissions.

-Especially Britshi," Brainy added. "Poor boy was freaked out when he heard about the fire. I wonder how he'd react if he knew about Selene…"
His ex-partner Gracy's voice pointed out: "If that so-called 'boss' spoke to him too, don't you think Britshi would do the same thing? Searching for clues in these ruins without telling you, I mean."
Brainy paused for a couple of seconds. The rest of his team waited until he shook his head and resumed the search. "Haven't thought of that," he admitted. "But knowing him, he would probably inform the police first. Which brings us to my dilemma of the beginning… which nobody wants to hear anymore, I assume?"
His aide nodded silently and one of the back-ups (a female koopa) let out an "uh-huh".
Brainy coughed, a futile attempt to hide his amused snort. An instant later, he winced as he noticed the painkiller's effect completely wearing off, and his burns intensely hurting again.

Two minutes later, all teams had found their respective targets. All four leaders turned their communicator emissions off in order not to be detected, still able to receive, ready to turn them on again whenever needed.
While Marik and his 'boss' were discreetly watching over the two entrances, Gracy's team was going to go through the files secured inside fireproof drawers, and Brainy would research the databanks - since his burns prevented him from moving too much, he could only type.
At least that was the plan.

But Brainy wouldn't let himself be deceived this time. Not now that his Intuition was coming back.
And it had been itching him from the exact moment when Gracy had volunteered to help them. There was no way she could've known about the calls, no way it would've been a coincidence when they had met on their way to 4A's lair, no way she could've decided to offer her help with the search so quickly.

As he started his research, Brainy activated the recording function of the holographic projector he had brought, without notice. This way, if there were any files programmed to be deleted upon discovery, he would still have access to them.
Besides, this was safer, and more discreet, than copying them directly from the databanks (which he was also doing, and more "officially" this time). And the records wouldn't be easy to falsify, considering the link was only visual.
While typing the words on the computer, he smirked, thinking about Gracy's actual motivation for joining their party.
She must be planning on gathering all the info she can. She probably knows where the documents are. She'll act up, playing ignorant, but will manage to be the one who'll find the documents. Then she'll most probably just destroy them, or hide them and bring them to the 'boss'.

Sounded like an insane and unfounded conspiracy theory, even to Brainy himself. Aside from the fact that he clearly felt his Intuition now. Which wasn't the case until a few hours ago, when he had metabolized half of the analgesics diluted in his blood.
Looks like painkillers don't just kill pain, he thought.
He winced again, both at the physical pain and at the perspective of having been fooled - incapacitated by something supposed to do him some good.
I'll never let anyone dissolve foreign chemicals in my blood plasma again.
Having something to complain about was somewhat comforting though.

A couple of hours and about two hundred repressed yawns later, Brainy had managed to copy all the files he could find. Only to of them had been lost during transfert, but images of their respective previews were recorded on his trusty projector.
Of course, he would never tell Gracy about that.
Neither would he tell her about the deal he had made with Marik and his comrades.
-Ya need us to find your sis, we need ya for our voice to be heard," his new friend had told him. "It's a pact. We'll help ya, ya'll help us. Allright?"

If Gracy was to find out about that, her 'boss' could have another way of getting what he wanted (meaning the data, the files, and most importantly… the rats).
You can always duplicate the rest, but the rats are unique.
Speaking of the rats…
The efforts and risks he took, just to get them back, indicate how precious they are. The mutation must be hard to make. Chances of succeeding again are so low, they can't afford to lose them.

A thought crossed his mind so suddenly, he almost came to a full stop.
They can't afford to lose them! he repeated to himself.
If I ever find a way to destroy them without leaving any tissue for cloning, I'll earn enough time to inform the authorities and explain the situation! All I need for evidence is the files!
It was easier than it sounded, actually. All he had to do was…
But what if they follow me? I'll eventually lead some sort of spy to the rats. Their agents will probably sneak up from behind and kill me before I even manage to…
He sped up, excited. He had a plan.
All I'll need is another couple of rats. One couple to my place, to be taken care of by Britshi; and one to that 'boss', to be brought to the bad guys. And once those evil folks will realize they got the wrong rats… it'll be too late.

Next chapter is planned to be posted once I'm back from vacation. Right now, I'm not quite motivated.
Okay, I'll be honest; right now, I'm not motivated at all.

Reason: appearent lack of interest. (not just on NV)

YAY, MY LAPTOP CAN FINALLY CONNECT AGAIN!
Which means, I can post the next chapter, which was stored on my hard drive for all that time.

Chapter 6 : Scientific Plotline

Brainy sighed for the umpteenth time, brought the cursor over the 'Next' button, then hit the fingerpad. The computer, located in a corner of the 4A headquarters, skipped to the next file and displayed it.
As this one could be indirectly related to the transgenic rats, the young biologist decided to bookmark it. And again, he checked that the rats themselves were still in the cage; the first one (white fur, pink feet, peach nose and tail) was running inside an exercice wheel, and the other one (white with black extremities and spine) was curled up, sleeping.

He turned his attention back to the screen.
These results seem familiar somehow. I'm pretty sure I've seen something like this before.
He felt the sudden urge (now that his oranism was producing its own anaesthetics, he could keep his Intuition up without feeling the pain at full intensity) to go through the five other reports he had previously bookmarked, so he did.
And he didn't regret doing it.

He was sure Gracy was spying on him, from behind the encyclopedia she pretended to read. Brainy had also been watching her reflection on the screen and, as a matter of fact, she had been 'reading' the same page for… nearly half an hour.
But for his idea to be effective, Gracy (and whoever she was actually working for) had to know that he knew. He wanted them to know, whoever 'they' were.
I know what they'll think I'm going to do then. And I know what they are going to do.
With a self-satisfied expression, the scientist faked interest in the displayed file. He saw something else moving on the screen: Gracy's reflection lowered its book, got up, then walked up to his own image.
Brainy inserted a hand between his thighs, flicking a switch.

-Brainy…?"
The green male faked surprise: "Oh, hi Grace. I've found someth--"
-I don't understand this paragraph."
She pointed at the text in question. It was in an article about a genetic research project.
-The Genetically Integrated Mitochondrium project?" He lained closer to the encyclopedia, his cheek passing by Gracy's nose tip, to look at the paragraph she was asking about. "Oh, that part. Well, you know mitochondria usually duplicate themselves, independently from the eukaryote cell in which they are?"
The white female nodded briefly, so he finished his explanation: "And in nature, the cell itself can't make them from scratch. Thanks to the GIM project, these folks are hoping to make that possible."
-Making cells capable of synthesizing their own mitochondria?"
-Yup."

Thanking him, Gracy let the book down on the desk.
-You were saying?" she asked. "You found something interesting?"
The male casually pointed at the screen. "Not really. That's the best I could find."
His ex-colleague scanned the view, and nodded in sympathy. "There's little information, so many questions to answer in such a short time's notice… I couldn't have done better."
Of course you couldn't, Brainy thought, hiding his amusement. You couldn't even have done as good.

The file displayed looked like the one he had seen previously, except the picture and report of the fingerprint test results was different. If Brainy hadn't been as careful as he was now, he could've thought it was the same thing.
As he had expected, Gracy had been distracting him, while the file (and probably the others he had found) were being replaced by someone in the distance. That's what he would've done if their roles were reversed.

But unlike Gracy, he had an ace up his sleeve, which nobody (not even his closest colleagues) but his siblings knew about.
The holographic projector lying between his thighs had been reprogrammed by a nameless engineer toadette, from the electronics factory where his father Atahall Fiction used to work. The engineer had given it to Atahall as a goodbye present upon learning about his new job. She had modified it so much, it was unlike any off-the-shelf units of the same model; it could create forcefields, translate foreign languages and codes - which no other commercialized projector could do.
And the blue yoshi had given it to his son, as he didn't know how to use all its functions, and since he didn't want to go through the three-centimeter-thick manual.
____________________

-Ya sure it's a good idea?"
Marik shifted his weight from one foot to the other and readjusted his hearing aide, while Brainy was eyeing the different cages and their respective contents.
-Why, you've got a better one?"
-Well… I know a few guys who do wonders with animatronics, y'know."
-Even the most advanced animatronic models have an artificial-looking motion, y'know," the young scientist snapped back, "unless you use motion capture - which requires real animals anyway. Not to put the guys you know down, but it looks like we'd better do it this way."

Slowly walking over to another cage featuring mice, the green scientist went on: "Because if those from the other side… meaning the baddies… if they resort to kidnapping my sister to get these rats back… this means they don't want me to take my time, to make tests and to find out what the rats are for."
He let Marik think about the implications of the situation he had just described. The blue teenager frowned and, nodding, finished:
-So this means… they're up to no good. And they don' wantcha to know what they're up to."
Nodding briefly in return, Brainy kneeled beside a huge cage filled with white rats. His teen friend, starting to lose focus, walked away towards another part of the pet store.

The scientist yoshi looked carefully at each rat, then stared at the ones which resembled the transgenic ones the most.
Discreetly taking the actual lab rats (attached to eachother and to his shirt with properly designed harnesses) out of his pocket, he compared them.
Only seconds later, he put the transgenic animals back and called for the merchant.
Putting his satisfaction and eagerness aside, he adopted his most reluctant and indifferent face - when motivated enough, he was as good at negotiating and acting as he was at microbiology and genetics.

The title for this one is a reference to one of Marik's writings on YAF.
Come to think of it, it's been a while since we last saw one of his works there.

Chapter 7 : Two Sides To A Story

These things aren't for me anymore, Rouchan thought as she paused for a moment to catch her breath. I'm too old for this kind of exercice now.
The koopa leader of the scientific team, a yellow-shelled one named Goliath, had requested a private meeting to update her on the situation. And as usual, the old purple female was late.
Members of the Society Against Uncontrolled Urbanization nodded with respect as they walked past her. As the founder and first (but retired) leader, she was respected by them.
Not like these newbies, popping out of nowhere, pretending to do the Society a favor by adding "fresh minds and modern means".

What was their true reason for joining anyway?
Her organization had agreed to let them make these experiments to restore natural selection in cities; ironically, by using a technique developed by… urban populations. It opposed the decisions she had made when creating the Society, but eh, it was best to fight fire with fire.
She eventually resumed her way to the intelligence room through the underground maze, lit by lamps that drew energy from solar panels and batteries. As soon as they would achieve their goals, they would destroy these artifacts of urban life too.

-You're late again," the koopa reproached as soon as she pulled the door open.
-I know," she replied patiently, resisting an urge to slap him on the face. Instead, she got inside the tiny room, ignoring the computers and screens along the walls, and closed the door.
-I'll only have a couple of minutes now." Goliath's voice lacked the steady and impressive tone she knew (and dreaded) from the Boss.
-Do it quick then," Rouchan said.
-The green one knows. Agent 06 reports that he's seen the file about the secret experiments."

The old one's eyes widened.
-He didn't have time to look at it in detail before she warned us," Goliath added, "so we could erase it while she distracted him. I thought your scientific team had taken care of blowing off the circuits of that particular databank."
Rouchan's lips tightened. " Our experts set the explosive charges at the spot specified by your spies. We're against computers in general, so they've done this before."
The koopa mumbled something under his breath.
-We haven't done it wrong. If anything, your spies gave us false information."
This time, the yellow-shelled koopa gritted his teeth. "We have clearly defined our purpose, planned everything to the smallest detail. We have selected our agents for each field carefully; spying, intel, tech, scientific, and the rest. You can't blame us for anything."

Rouchan couldn't stand any more implicit insults. She raised her right hand, fingers spread wide.
But Goliath easily grabbed her wrist, stopping her arm before she could strike him.
-I would give you the details, but I'm running out of time now. We're moving onto the next stage of our project now, preparing the labs. I know the green scientist yoshi, he'll surely bring the transgenic rats. He can't take risks by playing games on us; he's a yoshi, too weak to do anything."
Spinning on his heels before Rouchan could reply to the obvious insult, the yellow-shelled koopa left the intelligence room.

Goliath didn't enjoy the old yoshi's offended attitude at the slightest degree. He was too busy thinking of the report he had to make.
My Boss won't like this at all. He doesn't underestimate the scientist.
And the Boss was right. This green male with black spikes wasn't one to be misunderestimated. He was smarter and slyer than they had thought at first.
Buying a couple of new rats that look like the ones we're looking for… he's not so silly and unimaginative.
Brainy Fiction actually did deserve this name. But it'd take more than that to fool Goliath and his team of experts.
The scientist yoshi could buy new rats, but he couldn't think he needed to implant Type-12 tags set on a twelve-megahertz frequency under their skins. There was no way he could even detect them on the transgenic rats, knowing they were made by SpyTech Works.

He entered the control room of the Scientific Core, drawing a breath of relief. After those creepy tunnels with uneven rocky walls, the flat and right-angled metal setting felt like home.
It hadn't been easy earning this promotion, but he had managed to gain the Boss' trust by giving Him bionic arms, allowing him to be an outstanding member of His species. Goliath proudly looked around at the computer screens, and the agents (his agents) dutifully sitting or standing at each console.
-Subjects' status?" he asked, turning at the communications console.
The agent, a light blue yoshi, replied: "Tags are reading clearly, sir."

Goliath opened his mouth to diss the lizard, but remembered at the last moment that they couldn't know more.
When the building had been set on fire, the rats had reacted to the smoke and the heat by producing strange substances. These molecules had somehow short-circuited everything but the transmission subsystem. Therefore all they could do was use their respective signals to identify and track the rats.
Blast these rioters, he thought. Did they really have to attack at that crucial moment? We were just about to get the rats to a safe place, they could've attacked the next night!
This wasn't a coincidence, he could almost bet his entire career. It just couldn't be a coincidence. Someone had to have pushed the young activists to take action that night, instead of another one later.

-Incoming transmission from the Head Core, sir."
The communications agent's voice interrupted Goliath's musings.
-On the main screen, Agoran."
Agoran flicked a switch and the wide screen embedded into the back wall winked on. A goomba appeared, with bionic arms hanging down from the sides of the armchair.
-Goliath," he simply said.
The koopa bowed low. With far more respect in his voice than with Rouchan, he informed…
…the Boss.

I remember this story from so long ago when I used to read it. It is so great to read it again. You're very good. While the chapters are short, they are constructed very well. Your fitting of scientific facts is amazing. I've always loved science so it fits in well to my liking and scores you bonus points. Each chapter seems to have an awesome mass of awesomeness in it. I only have good comments. This is great. 8.5/10. Points removed for length.
