The wind blew in her face, tossing back strands of black hair and bringing a flush to her cheeks. The past months on the road had brought colour to her skin and a new light to her eyes, though the darkness that had been formed after the death of David. Her friends had been kind to her, taking her in and letting her travel with them. Of course the money she’d stolen from her father’s lockbox had helped a little. She didn’t have a whole lot to offer to help, though she was learning.

A new city was coming into view before them, and from what she could see there was a festival just starting. Excitement started to rise within her. Festivals were always wonderful, all sorts of people came and she could work some of the tricks she’d learned. The boys teased her, but she was becoming almost as good as they were at separating folk from their money. Some of the time at least.

As they found a spot to camp, she moved around and helped set up. The routine was automatic now, and she ignored the calls and dirty looks. She was one of the Travellers now, or seemed to be. Even now there were times when she knew she was out of place and cast adrift between. No longer good folk, and not completely accepted by the Travellers.

She was hauling some water back to the camp for cooking when the sensation washed over her. Stumbling, some of the water sloshed out before she could put down her load and she felt the blood drain from her face even as her heart pounded and the world seemed to become a beacon of sensation. The wind was chill on her heated skin, and the sounds of the camp became muted while the sounds of the road roared in her ears. Her gaze sought the people passing, searching for someone, something.

“Liza.. Elisa!”

With a snap she was thrown back to herself, one of the younger boys had her by the arm and was shaking her as he called her name. “C’mon. Ma needs t’ water and yer dreamin’” A small frown furrowed his brow. “Ye don’t have t’ fever d’ya?”

A wane smile crosses her lips and she shakes her head as she picks up the container. “I don’t have t’ fever. I’m fine.. just.. grew tired a moment. Y’should go finish your duties.”

The boy gives her a look before shrugging and running off to finish what he was doing and Elisabeth goes to finish her own work. She can ponder the strange situation tonight before she falls sleep.

Sleep came uneasily that night, where up until now she had slept like a baby. The world was like a new place to her since her death, one where she had no true responsibility or ties to family and her past. One where she was growing and learning about new things. The dizzy spell worried her though. Was she growing ill?

When she finally did fall asleep, she slept so deeply that the first stirrings of her ‘family’ didn’t waken her like they usually did. Not until the covers were pulled from her and she was berated for being a slugabed did she finally move, to gobble down what was left of breakfast and join in the plans for the day.

It was decided they would go to the fair. They could set up for the day and sell some wares, and of course find other ways to separate folk from their money.

It didn’t take them long to take one of the wagons and set up at the fair after bribing one of the managers of the market. Things had yet to get into full swing, so Elisa wandered with a couple of others girls, an older brother keeping an eye on them from nearby, looking at stalls before more people arrived.

Looking at some ribbons and baubles, she felt a pang of sadness. If this were her town, she might be getting dressed in her best and father might give her some money to buy a treat.

Shaking off the funk, they wandered back to their setup and settled down until more people arrived.

It hadn’t been going badly, she had managed to part money from people and what they had to sell was doing a brisk business as people forgot to be wary of them. Finding herself growing hungry, she took some of the money from her little stash and told the others she was going for food.

One of the older men with the small group there spoke to her. “Watch yourself Elisa. Any trouble, you call and we’ll be there.” Nodding her agreement, she gave a slight wave before he was distracted by a new rube, and she wandered off.

Making her way to a meat pie stall, she paid for two and quickly gobbled one down as she began to wander again. This time watching the people.

That was when she felt it again, the same dizzying sensation she had felt the night before. Her fingers tightened on the remainder of the second meat pie and her gaze searched around for what was causing this. That was when she saw him.

An older man who was fairly well dressed was watching her. When he saw that he had caught her eye, he gave her a slow smile and a nod. Something about the smile sent a chill down her spine as confusion filled her. Who was he? What was he doing to her?

Suddenly no longer having an appetite, she turned and handed the pie to a hungry looking child before swiftly walking back to the others.

Something in that smile told her she didn’t want to be alone.
