Dillon nodded in acknowledgement of his friends words about change. He had accepted the change in is live more eagerly than Garith, but perhaps that was to be expected. Dillon had not been as old of a mortal, and his views on his life clouded by the way his people had been treated.

Indian, black, white, none of that mattered as a vampire. Not that they were without prejudice. Just the color of ones skin and mortal heritage rarely played a role in those prejudices.

The Tremere pondered Garith's question. Then met his eyes and slowly replied. "No, it doesn't matter. You will live for a good thousand years my friend. Marriage compared to that span, holds little interest to our kind."

He smiled slowly. "Now that I have given you 'worst case' ... I would marry Isi without hesitation, I would bind her to me in all ways, both mortal and vampiric should I be allowed." He leaned forward while holding his friends eyes. "It is up to each vampire Garith. You are YOU...no one asks that you change that. You will just be more YOU than before. Some marry, some do not. The Camarilla, hold to the masquerade for a reason...it helps us hold on to our humanity...we value that humanity and those that are human..."

Dillon sat back and took a sip of the wyne. "You can still love, hate and have all the 'feelings' you had before my friend. If you are fortunate enough to find a woman that you love and loves you in return...marry her...hang on to her for as long as you both exist."

Garith listened with open interest to what Dillon said. At 38, he had known there was still much to learn. With the realization of just what the vampiric life span was, he suddenly felt quite young despite those same 38 years.” You mentioned bindin Isi to you in ... vampiric ways? What do ya mean?”

He looked back at Garith a bit surprised. "The Sabbot have what is called the Red Wedding. Much like mortal wedding, where vows are exchanged, but blood is too, binding them to each other."

He smiled. "Each clan has their own idea of what marriage will be. Blood binding is fairly common, though for us..." He trailed off.

"It is something I haven't fully researched or questioned before now...before Isi..." He admitted quietly. "It is something I plan to become very familiar with.

Garith had picked up his glass and sipped from it as he listened to Dillon. Setting it back down, he decided bloodwyne was an acquired taste and one he was
struggling with. Glancing down at his book, he looked back at Dillon, suddenly remembering his conflicting views in regard to the Doctor. He couldnt deny that he had missed conversing with him over a good port or brandy. But there was still the lingering doubt and sense of betrayal. He glanced down then back, his hint of smile and eyes apologetic. ” Ah should get back at this. Thanks, Dillon.”

The Indian doctor nodded. Returning Garith's almost hidden smile with one of his own. It wasn't all he had hoped for, but it was a beginning, more than they have had since his friends awakening into his new world.

Slowly he stood the bloodwyne in his hand, and stared down at the southern Tremere. "You don't have to do this on your own Garith, should you have any questions, I am always nearby..." He smiled a bit ironically "I always have been..."

With a small sigh he turned away, hopeful that their next meeting would be the one that gave them back their relationship.

He looked up as Dillon spoke, uttered a quiet thanks then returned to the book. Not long after Dillon left, he closed the book, unable to concentrate. Rising, he
wandered out of the library and headed toward the back of the mansion.

Clarence watched through expressionless eyes as the Doctor left the library. He was aware of the stain in the relationship between the two men. That in itself didn't concern him. There was nothing that mandated clansmen be 'friends', just that the chain was kept and respect given.

He was curious however. Garith gave the outward showing of accepting what he was, and what he could be, but the fact he treated his 'friend' differently, gave the Regent cause to wonder how much was an 'act' and how much was real.

As he contemplated the newest magus appeared, turning in the opposite direction from Dillon and walking deeper into the bowls of the mansion. Without hesitation Clarence stepped out of the shadows and followed him. After a few moments he spoke. "Magus Monroe."

He didn't pick up his pace as Garith drew to an abrupt stop, but made the younger male wait for him to slowly join him. "How goes your studies this evening?" Clarence asked with little curiosity.

In fact an almost disinterested look was on his dark face as he examined the younger male. Garith had yet to learn to mask his feelings, and the Regent immediately noted the wariness, confusion and loss that flickered through the soft brown eyes.

"I note Magus Cloudhawk was with you. Tell me, what did you discuss."

Garith bowed somewhat formally as the REGENT walked up to him, his expression carefully neutral though his eyes immediately betrayed him. He held no ill will toward the other members of the Chantry, Clarence’s military analogy having been readily applied to them all and accepted by him, with the exception of Dillom.

“Theyah comin along, Suh. Magus Cloudhawk has kindly offahd his assistance, should Ah requiah any.”

He was not prepared for the second question and, while the sting of betrayal tempted him to do the same, he knew he could not do what was done to him. The genuine surprise and momentary confusion the question created in him hid his mental scramble for an answer that was not a lie.

“Suh? What weah... Ah! I was askin Magus Cloudhawk whethah ouah kind still marry and about bindin by blood, Suh. And while Ah think Ah undahstand why it is foahbidden to feed on anothahs blood, Ah was strugglin with the apparent contradiction that presents in ouah creation.”

"Indeed." Clarence said non-committal. "And was he able to clarify such a contradiction to your satisfaction?" His wise eyes, noted the confusion his questions were creating, but they noted something else. The young vampire before him, had a sense of loyalty, despite how he might 'feel' towards his old friend.

He had no doubt that the discussion had indeed covered the topic of marriage, it was a discussion he and the good doctor had had not to many years back. At the time one young woman had come into the Magus' unlife…

Unfortunately for Tremere the opportunity to bring the potential candidate into their fold had been lost, as she had been taken by their enemy's. The Regent had been Dillon's 'maker' and as such held a certain confidence with the doctor, a confidence that he was beginning to wonder if Gairth didn't share.

"Walk with me." He commanded turning towards the far side of the room and the stairs that would take them up to his 'office." "Tell me Magus Monroe. This talk of marriage…is it because you desire such a relationship with a female you have been separated from?" He glanced over at Garith, knowing full well this was not the case. "Or is it something Magus Cloudhawk has expressed a desire to do?"

Again the door was opened for Garith to betray his betrayer. "The truth if you please Magus Monroe. You will find there are great …rewards to those that protect the clan through…information that potentially breaks our laws…our ways."

Together they climbed the stairs Clarence nodding in return to a fellow clansman that passed them. "Advancement, prestige…satisfaction of settling an old score…" He murmured as they reached his office. Clarence penetrating gaze met Gariths as he projected his mind it the young man's letting him feel the 'power' and know a bit of fear as he said silently. "Or I could just…take the information from you…"

He had no intention of fulfilling that threat, but he did intend to know what Gairth was made of. It was actually the mildest test the young vampire would face at the hands of his Clan. One of many that would come his way throughout his new life.

“Not entiahly, Suh, but Ah am suah the fault lies in my own undahstandin and logic rathah then with Doc...Magus Cloud hawks explanation”. He had fallen into step with the Regent when the next line of questioning began.

The passing interruption of a passing fellow apprentice gave him just enough time to replace any thought of Dillon and Isis possible, potential marriage with the memory of his wife and daughters passing. By the time Clarence looked back at him, his eyes as well as his aura reflected much of the emotions associated with his loss.

By the time they reached Clarence’s Office, with the direction Clarence
had taken the conversation, he was not entirely caught off guard by the threat, but the method of delivery startled him.

” Suh Ah...my wife and child weah taken from me recently. If Ah should be fortunate in this new life to find someone who fills the gap in my life and completes me as Constance did, Ah wanted to know how that would wok now.”

The Regent's expression remained unchanged as he studied Garith. A wave of his hand gave the man permission to sit. He continued on towards a side table and picked up a bottle of port, with his back to the young Tremere he poured two glasses, as he spoke.

"Did you know that the timing of your being brought into our clan was carefully and intricately woven together?" He picked up the glasses and walked back to Gairth handing him one, before taking a seat behind his desk.

Black eyes swept over the youthful face as he took a sip of the finely aged port. "Your maker had wanted to bring you over while your wife was still alive. In fact not long after your marriage." He nodded to the port. "You will find it will take time to adjust to more 'human' pleasures. Had not a clansman made a…bargain with your creator did, the additional time you had would never have been." He shrugged "And your young wife would have suffered a ...fatal accident..."

"Of course, there is a certain irony in that. When your wife was with child, another almost took you. Again a clansman interceded…" He titled his head "You seem to inspire a certain…loyalty…." Clarence set his glass down and folded his hands over his stomach as he leaned back.

"Do not be fooled Magus Monroe, there are few here that, will not take advantage. It is as with any organization, you have both those you can trust…and those you can not. Those you can, will rarely, openly, be the ones you will immediately know of."

The Regent sat up and pulled in front of him the papers he had been working on earlier. "You may go Magus Monroe." He said coldly, ending the conversation. He waited until the initiate was at the door before murmuring quietly. "You are a weakness he can not afford. You might do well to remember that."

He had managed to carefully guard his reactions to all the Regent shared...barely. The moment he was able to escape Clarence’s presence, however, he did so with as much dignity he could muster.

But once clear of his office, he stumbled blindly down the corridor and out the back door, not stopping until he was well into the woods. Dropping to his knees, his stomach convulsed repeatedly until one hand went forward to keep him from landing face first in the dirt as he vomited.

When the wrenching subsided, he turned his face skyward, the canopy of treetops partially obscuring the night sky. “Constance, my heaht. “A deep moan of anguish escaped him followed by a whispered “My God, foahgive me.”

Dillon had not gotten far when a rider caught up with him. He had intended to return to town and remain there for a fortnight. He knew Garith needed time, and distance from him as he learned about his new life. Perhaps given both, it would put a different perspective on things and they could begin to rebuild what they had.

His driver slowed the carriage to a halt as a ghoul drew up beside them. "Magus Cloudhawk. Regent Mercer has requested you return to the Mansion. He wishes you to search out Magus Monroe."

Dillon's brows drew together then he nodded, motioning the driver to obey. As he sat back he forced the fear that shot through him aside. He knew Garith, and he knew his friend wasn’t' likely to do something stupid deliberately. Of course in this new world of his, he could potentially do something that might earn him a diplomacy action, but even that would be mild as the young WERE given leeway to learn the rules.

It seemed to take forever before he reached the Chantry, and he was bounding out of the carriage, before it came to a full stop, striding quickly into the house and towards the Regent's office.

"Magus Cloudhawk."

Dillon halted in mid stride and turned facing Clarence, concern visible on his face. "He is outside...coming to terms with what it means to be vampire....and who friends are..."

"What did you do Clarence?" Dillon asked taking a step towards his maker.

"Nothing you have not faced yourself." The rich black voice replied dryly. A smile appeared on the mans face as he closed the distance between them. His hand came up to clap Dillon on the shoulder. "Stay with us for a while. I have a feeling he will adjust better with you here."

Dillon frowned then nodded, before his face took on is typical expressionless appearance. Clarence was wily, the doctor had learned that and many other valuable lessons from the man. He knew it was never wise to underestimate him or look to deeply into his methods.

He hesitated only for a moment then headed towards the back of the house. The wood was the only place he knew that would provide any privacy to be sought. He wasn't sure that he agreed with Clarence's methods, but he knew it was much too late to do other than try to pick up the pieces.

The Indian doctor made sure he wasn't followed as he left and sought the shelter of the woods. Once there he called out softly for his friend, hoping that whatever had happened, wouldn't prevent him from replying.

By the time Dillon entered the woods, Garith was overcome with grief, remorse, and anguish. He didn’t hear his friend call to him. He was too caught up in
wrestling with what he had become and feeling like he had betrayed his wife by now being one with those who had plotted her death. Staring blindly at the sky, he sought answers...and forgiveness.

Silence was he answer. Dillon refused to give into any emotion at the moment, he had but one goal, and one only, to find Garith. He stopped and closed his eyes, opening sense to the land and all that dwelt therein. There was nothing vampirc about what he did, more a drawing on his own Indian heritage and the was of his people.

As with all living things the forest had a pulse, and the creatures that made there home therein, were at one with it. It took him several moments to find the one disturbance in the woods, the one thing that wasn't 'at home'. Dillon opened his eyes and changed direction, 'listening' with heightened awareness to what was and was not.

His feet made no sound as the approached and after another few moments he spotted his friend. His aura was filled with grief, and pain, and self loathing. Dillon's eyes closed and his head dropped.

The past could not be changed. The future however... "Garith." He said softly "Do you wish to forget?"

Silence reigned between them for several minutes as Garith remained motionless on his knees staring at nothing. Finally he turned lifeless eyes toward
Dillon. “ They would have killed he, Dillon. And now Ah am one of them.”

Dillon didn't come closer, his voice however took on a soothing almost hypnotic cadence as he spoke to his friend.

"No you are not one of THEM." Gently he 'influenced' Garith to listen, their eyes remained locked. "Were you part of the Confederates, that raped women, stole and sold children into slavery, murdered men for their money...all in the name of the supporting the southern cause?"

The Tremere titled his head as he allowed the words to sink in. "are you one of THEM, Garith? Or were you a man of honor, who fought for what you believed in, hoping for a better future for not only the south, but all....."

Slowly Dillon took several steps towards his friend, then gracefully lowered himself to the earth, his legs crossed his hands lay loosely in his lap.

"There is good and bad in all." His smile was without humor, it is the vampire, man himself that determines his course, I can forsake my humanity and become the evil others perceive...or I can find ways to hold tight to my humanity, to nature it, until I meet my final death ..or topor..."

“When Constance and the baby died, Ah pouahd my heat and soul into Providence. IT was...and is...the beaah of my grief and dispaiah as well as a blessin. Am Ah to be stripped of he too? Wheah does it end? At what point, if evah, do Ah find out who Ah am now?” He sighed out of habit and looked down. “How many good folk will die like Beau Clancy just so Ah can exist? Wheah is uhe justice in that kind of death?”

Dillon didn't flinch away from the poignant questions. He understood all to well the mixed emotions one felt once the realization of WHAT you were finally hit.

"Providence will always be yours Garith. No one will take it from you. It is your business acuity that proved you worthy of the clan." The Indian doctor knew his friend wouldn't like some of the things he would reveal, but he would not lie to his friend, he held him too high a regard to do so.

"Beau Clancy asked to be the one to give you life." He murmured. "He was a man of honor, and I was privileged to know him. Unfortunately he had a heart deformity, and his compassion was a weakness we couldn't ..." Dillon forced a sigh through his lungs.

"Clancy was discovered by the North because of his liaison with a southern woman who was a northern sympathizer. He showed a lack of judgment and in such, lost the one who marked him, interest. His health would have seen him dead before then end of this season, he didn’t wish to die that way...we honored his request."

Dillon leaned forward "There are many truths, within truths my friend. The surface of what you see, is but a reflection of your limited understanding. What will NOT change, is who you were as a mortal...you are still that man Garith, it is who you are...."

His head dropped for a moment then he looked up "Did you betray me to Clarence?" it was as shot in the dark, but if he knew the Regent, he had not doubt Garith was given that opportunity.

Garith took in all Dillon said, though he still wrestled with understanding it all. But when Dillon asked if he had betrayed him to Clarence, his head shot up as his eyes sought Dillons, emotion flooding the brown eyes. “Ah would nevah betray youah trust...”

He paused then continued quietly. How did you know?

A slow smile crossed Dillons face as he nodded knowingly. "I know our Regent." He responded quietly then tacked on. "As I know you..."

He let that sink in before continuing. "The Tremere are ones that thrive on knowledge, learning and know from that comes true power. But we cull out the weak, those that could harm the clan and thus all of us." He met Garith's eyes "That was a simple test you faced. You handled it well. You will face many test in the future, some will be life threatening."

Dillon examined Gariths face then murmured "I knew you would never betray me, you never did as a mortal, you never will as a vampire..." The hesitation was brief "Just as I have never betrayed you..."

A test. A test during which plans to kill his wife were revealed. Plans which some unknown clansman had... Realization slowly dawned on him as he studied
his friend with new understanding. “ You... youah the clansman Clarence refahd to. You protected Constance from them. “ He dwelt on that a moment before
continuing. “ But why the choose oah die? Why bring me into this existence?”

Dillon hid the shock he experienced at Garith’s revelation. While he had guessed correctly that Clarence tempted the southerner to betray him, he had not guessed Clarence had reveled any part of his involvement in watching over his friend and his wife.

The Tremere doctor ignored his friends comment and chose instead to respond to the core issue.

“You were in little danger of death.” He said quietly; holding Garith’s eyes with his. “it is…standard practice to make the candidate think death looms, and yes, sometimes it does.”

He replied before Garith could ask. “But in your case…no. Had you chosen death…” Dillon smiled a bit sadly. “Your memory would have been removed. Of everything, including having ever known me…or Isi.”

That was a small price to pay, to know that night would have been the end of their relationship, to ensure his friend’s right to choose. Dillon looked past him into the shadows of the woods. “You hold within you, the ability to benefit the clan as a whole, the inherit power, that others recognize and respect.” His eyes drifted back to Garith. “Through Providence under your guidance, the Tremere
Will grow in power..and in wealth.”

“Is that possible? To just make someone foahget a significant paaht of theiah life?” Garith could not fathom such a concept or the emptiness such a
possibility could create. It was why, almost two hundred years later, he would not offer Ame the chance to forget her werewolf lover following his death.
Garith shook his head, sighing deeply as he looked at Dillon, his voice soft. “And Ah thought Ah had a lot still to lean befoah.”

Dillon nodded . "It is possible. It is something you will learn. Memories would have been...removed yes, but also reconstructed. Some new ones in their place. "

The Tremere doctor smiled as Garith commented on how much he had to learn. "You will learn much my friend, in small manageable pieces. Remember you are NOT alone, there are those that will help you."

Dillon noted the man's aura had returned a bit more to normal and closed his eyes in relief. When he opened them he found Garith's eyes upon him. He titled his head in question. "What?" He said softly. "Ask, I will answer as openly and honestly as I can."

Garith smiled faintly if sheepishly. “Will Ah evah enjoy poaht again? Oah is that simple pleasah goin to foevah make me sick?”

Caught by surprise Dillon, blinked, then threw back his head and laughed.
Still chuckling he nodded. "Oh yes, you will learn to enjoy port and even food again, if you so desire. It just takes time...and knowledge... You have plenty of time. And the knowledge will come."

His dark eye captured Garith's and after a moments silence he asked quielty. "Do you think you can find in within you to ..forgive me.." He smiled half heartedly. "I miss my friend."

“If you will foahgive me. Ahm afraid Ahve not been much of a friend of late.” He extended his hand to Dillon and, as they shook hands, his expression grew serious. “So does Clarence know about you and Isiladura oah not?”

Dillon was relieved. He couldn't explain the sadness he found once he realized that Garith could choose to move on in his life and walk away from the friendship they had developed over the years.

Has his hand dropped back to his lap he too grew serious and shook his head. "Not entirely. Clarence is my maker...I told him about Isi, not long after I met her." He smiled fondly at the memory. "Given her father was..dead..and her mother willing to see her wed to me, I asked for her to be brought into the clan."

His eyes filled with remembered rage for a brief moment. "I wasn't ..timely. Another had marked her ...of the sabbat...and took her before I ..."

His head bowed. "All Clarence knows for sure, is I fell in love with a human, wanted to bring her over and marry her, and that she was taken from me by the sabbot."

Dillon raised his head and met Garith's eyes. "He would personally destroy me, should he find out that I still see Isi, or that we still talk of one day marrying... our association is forbidden..."

Garith was relieved but saddened by his friend's answer. The way Clarence had phrased his question, speaking of truth, threatening to take the information from him, had nearly convinced him that the Regent knew, or at least suspected, something of Dillon and Isi's involvement.

Nodding slowly, he studied Dillon a moment before going on.

"Ah think my loss of Constance and ou'ah daught'ah may be an easi'ah cross to bea'ah then the bu'den you now carry. Dillon, if the'ah is ev'ah anythin Ah can do to aid eith'ah of you...."

A hint of smile curved his lips.

"Nothin has changed that, my friend. The risk may be great'ah to both of us now then befo'ah, but the rewa'd of hopefully someday seein you two togth'ah is ce'tainly a prize makin the risk worth while."

Dillon couldn't help the surprise that he felt at Garith's words. He stared at his friend concern growing on his face. The Tremere knew what was at stake, more so than perhaps the younger male before him.

"I can't let you do that Garith." Dillon said softly. "Perhaps you have yet to fully comprehend the depth of ...deception needed...for Isi and I to meet, let alone spend time together. Should ANYONE, in our clan find out. The final death would be a blessing by the time they were done..."

He leaned over and placed a hand on Garith's shoulder, giving it a firm reassuring squeeze. "Thank you for the offer, but I could not and will NOT, endanger you like that."

Dillon sat back his is expression pained but for a moment. "What I face..was my choice. Mine alone. I could have walked away..." His lips twisted at that in a self mocking smile.

"Do not think your loss is any less my friend. You had no choice in what you have faced ....the pain of it thrust upon you. I on the other hand have made a decision that can cost me dearly...with eyes wide open, accepting the consequences should they arise."

Garith nodded, his gaze lowering briefly then returning to meet Dillon's.

"Ah may be new to this ... life ... but Ah am not blind to the da'kness of it o'ah those around us. A friend is not only a friend when things ahr easy.

Ah have nothin to loose, which is mo'ah then you can say at the moment, and everythin to gain. All that was most impo'tant to me in life was taken with Constance's death, with the exception of you and Isiladura."

He regarded his friend for a long moment, giving his words time to sink in.
"Besides, if such a fate awaits me, then it should at least have meanin."

Again Garith surprised him, and it reflected on his typical expressionless face. He knew how he felt about his friend. Though it had never before today been openly acknowledge, and perhaps still wasn't verbalized. He honestly had not given much thought to how Garith felt about HIM.

Oh he knew Garith enjoyed his company, and he felt that he considered him a friend...but his statement of the importance Dillon played in his life...

"You humble me my friend." The Tremere Doctor said simply and in that accepted that as there was little he wouldn’t' do for Garith, the man returned the feeling. He could do no less than honor that by accepting help knowing that even in doing so, he would continue to protect his friend from any consequences where he could.

Dillon titled his head "You never responded to my question." His dark eyes were knowing, but he wanted Garith to know too... It would be a first of many steps toward closure. "DO you want to forget?

Garith shook his head no and smiled a wistful smile.

"Fo'ahgettin does not change what is. No, the'ah ahr lessons in eve'ahrythin if we take the time to lea'n them. But thank you."

He looked down at the ground, resting his hands on his knees and then looking back up at Dillon. While he was still not entirely at peace with what he was and all he had learned this night, he was on the path toward coming to terms with it.
In his heart of hearts, he knew he would bide his time, plan patiently, and one day repay his maker for the plans he had laid in regard to Constance.

Revenge is seldom an answer, but there are some things in a man's life that demand an answer.

Plotting the harm of a loved one, even if those plans were thwarted by a friend, is one of those things.......
