introduction
This lifestyle, it wasn't for everyone.
The constant travel brought with it a certain sense of isolation. Always on the road, you never had much chance to develop close friends outside of the company. A call home, perhaps, but Penny had never been much for family. What did suit her well was the independence. The freedom.

It was liberating, travelling the world over. Penny almost never felt alone. Sure, she'd been with NEW longer than most. But she never felt so connected as some. The athletes who dedicated their entire lives to the ring. She was just the announcer. A girl walking her way through life. Happy. Aimless, but happy.

That's how she liked to be. How she wanted to keep it. Easy and free.
Strange, to think, that she sat here in this moment -lost in a dinner date with her boyfriend. Adam Jones.

"It's beautiful, here..."

They sit across from one another, hands clasped together.
Adam had made reservations at a cafe, with a name Penny couldn't begin to pronounce. One look at the menu, and Penny was convinced Adam was spending entirely too much money on her. A sweet gesture, though. He'd always been good to her. A sweet man, really. But she'd never thought she'd be the relationship type. It just never suited her. Sure, some people had thought she might be a lesbian at times. But that wasn't it. She'd always just been too wrapped up in her own life. Too busy livin', as it were.

"Yeah, you found a great place..."

Hand in hand...
Penny answers Adam, knowing that the conversation had is only to break the silence. Adam, her boyfriend, is desperately trying to avoid the elephant the room -as it were.

"I was kind of referring more to you... you look majestic, in this light."

A sweet man, as ever.
But that wasn't the point.

"And you look like you went twelve rounds with a semi..."

Adam looks away, pulling his hand back.
They'd not spoken of Adam's last match, against Dominique Jean-Pierre. Not even that night, after the event. Truthfully, they'd spoken of anything BUT that match.

And that was the problem they were having at dinner.

intermission
"Penny Lane, you've been with NEW Era since the beginning.
And you've really been a delight to see, every time. It's strange, though, that there aren't actually many who would consider you to be one of the faces of NEW Era. I mean, in spite of the fact that you announce nearly every competitor to come out of the ring -few seem to know who you really are.

That contributes to a lot of mystery -and with that, intrigue."

Before the dinner, Penny receives an invitation to a public radio recording session.
She muses upon the invitation for an afternoon, and agrees to come the next day. Adam is still stateside, and Penny welcomes the experience.

"Of course, what many are curious about is your relationship to Adam Jones.
The one-time NEW Era Rainbow Warrior. The two of you just seemed to kind of... happen, by circumstance, as it were. Kind of out of the blue, really. So tell us Penny, how did that happen? Did you always like Adam?"

She remembered it well. Vividly...
"Honestly, I never took much notice of Adam.
He was... there, yes. But as you said, it's been my job over the years to introduce the competitors of NEW Era. There are a lot of people who are there, and not many I form a strong connection with. Some leave an impression, sure. And some don't. I wasn't sure what to think of Adam, and I wasn't looking to get involved with anyone. It just..."

Adam had hit the bottom, then.
Broken by Gavin, NEW Era's "Nightmare". Wounded and overcome with pain, Adam had never fallen so low. At least, not so far as she had seen. She'd come to him as a friend. Offered her support. And in that moment, he needed her.

"It just happened.
Or so those things go. You start talking to someone you didn't before. Or someone you knew, but not well. And talking develops a friendship. And the friendship becomes something more. One day I just realized. This was a man I could stand beside."

It was entirely contradictory to her nature.
In supporting Adam, she'd formed a connection. She became his pillar of strength, and helped him through a tough time. And when he no longer needed that support, she found it hard to leave.

It was vexing, to say the least.

"And is it hard for you, to stand beside him -watching as he comes to the ring? Watching as he is beaten, and defeated on the canvas?"

She never wanted this.
Yet it had happened. And so far, she hadn't had to give it much thought. Yet... that might change.

"When we started dating, we knew we had to be adults about it. You'll find few people as dedicated to the integrity of the sport as Adam is. He's too professional to be distracted in the ring, and I owe to him to be the same. I've kind of forced myself... to be desensitized, I suppose, when he's in the ring. Years of not having any personal connection to the ring myself have prepared me well for that. It's the night coming back to the hotel, where I sometimes break down about it."

She winced every time he took a fall...

"And last week? We saw... a new side of Adam, that we've never seen in the ring before.
Did this surprise, or shock you? Or was it expected. Is there a side of Adam you've seen that has been hidden from NEW Era at large? He's just recently returned from a long break over the winter season. All that time, you kept the relationship going when many might have thought you'd broken it off. Has Adam changed since his last run? Do you think this new fiendish behavior is what it takes to beat Kerryn Kali next week, a man who came dangerously close to becoming the next NEW World Champion?"

All that time, they'd been coasting along. Just fine.
But really, the truth was, they'd just been comfortable together. Might even their relationship was convenient, and easy. She'd forced herself not to consider it further. Too afraid of what that might mean. Every time he took a fall, she didn't want it to bother her. She didn't want to admit that more than anything, she was scared. Scared to be connected to someone like this.

Scared to see what might happen to him. What WAS happening with him.
And what was happening with him, from what she saw, was something she had to consider.

"Adam..."

The more she thought on it, the more she didn't want to. The more she couldn't.
"Adam is dedicated.
Adam is growing, and changing, and learning from every time he steps between the ropes. He...

He looks forward to an opponent like Kali. As any competitor on the roster should. I wouldn't be a good girlfriend if I said I thought he would lose. I think he will challenged, however, and a challenge is what he looks for when he gets to the ring. I... I can't speak for the wrestler he is. I am not dating the wrestler, I am dating the man. And whatever happens to him in the ring, whatever he does, he will always be a man of dedication, persistence, and integrity. I believe that's reflected in his career so far. He's not... aimed high or low, but is content with where he's been. Or at least, he was.

Right now, he's in a transitional state. And we saw that last week, when he fought against DJP. Where that goes, I can't say. But if I were Kerryn, I wouldn't make any assumptions. If Adam the man has taught me anything, it's that there are always surprises."

She wanted to think that they could just keep being like they were.
Aimless, and carefree. Like she was. But their relationship had reached that point. Adam was changing. It was time for the next step, whatever it might be.

conclusion
His face was broken, beaten, bloodied...
That hadn't been the shocking thing, though. What had scared her, was how enjoyed it. How he'd fiended off of the bloodlust of the match, and how it had empowered him somehow. It was a sight that Penny thought she'd never see.

Not from him.

"I'm not some concept, Adam. You can't just treat me like a girlfriend and think everything is okay.
I'm a person. You have to talk to me. If you're with me, then you're with me. Tell me what's going on. Talk to me."

There, at the dinner table, the conversation of silence had finally broken.
"I always thought...

Thought I couldn't handle the pain. That it was too much. That's how we started dating, remember? Yet... yet as it turns out. Maybe, just maybe, the pain is my greatest strength."

The light fell at the table.
There, in the darkness, Penny wondered. Who was the man across from her...
and did she love him?
