The awkwardness I am speaking of is the general uncomfortableness and amount of dead air between the questions, plus the nervous laughter from Selina after every sentence.

Hmmm, I think it's definitely tough to interview someone over Skype, but it's best to keep things conversational and not make it seem like you're reading off questions rapid fire.

Have a question ready to go in case your guest doesn't elaborate much on their answer, but make sure you're still listening and be ready to get them to expand on something the audience or yourself might want to know more about.

Interviews get really boring if it's like this:

Interviewer: Where are you from?

Guest: Texas.

Interviewer: Ok. [Pause] How old are you?

Guest: 23.

Interviewer: Ok. [Pause] Do you have any pets?

Guest: No.

Ugh. If you have a list of questions at hand before the interview, put them in the format that makes the most sense. Don't ask them where they live, and then who the want to face the most, and then how long they've lived in wherever, keep them grouped together.

I generally tell my students to have a list of 20-30 questions ready to go, but to really listen to their guests and come up with questions based on what the guest says. The longer you can go without asking a question off of your list, the better. If you can get to the end of the interview (my students usually did 25 minute shows) with questions on your list remaining, that's a good thing. That means you can have your guest back on your show another time and still have fresh questions to ask.

Like I said, it's definitely tougher over Skype or over the phone. In studio interviews...much easier because you can see the person and know when they're about to finish their thought.
