Disclaimer. I made it fairly clear in the promo, but wanted to give fair warning. The little girl is not visible. It appears that he is reacting to nothing and speaking to empty air when talking to her.

**
When you stop and think about it, life really comes down to the four T's. Terror. Tears. Triumph and Trepidation. No matter if your a child restrained far from home, a teenager taking a important test or a adult working for that much needed promotion. It all comes down to the four T's.

It begins with Trepidation. That uneasy feeling of the unknown. Will I make it home? Can I past this test? Can I earn this promotion?

Then it falls to terror. That cold, icy fist around your heart as you ask, will I make it out alive? What if I fail? What if I cannot prove I deserve this?

Then, comes the tears. They fall from fear or frustration. The child cries for fear, the teenager and the adult cry in frustration. When the world bears down on you, even kings cry.

Finally the modem of freedom. The child is found and returned to loving parents. The teenager gets that dreaded test score and the boss calls the adult into their office. Triumph. After the long, hard and often tormenting road, you rise victorious. Finally.

But the world is always uncertain. Nothing is ever one hundred percent. And then, sometimes, a fifth T is added. When the world is well, and all seems right in the universe....and then....

Torment.

BEEP.....BEEP.....BEEP......BEEP....

A hand slams down on the cheap alarm clock before throwing back the thin motel issue blanket. A mass of long, tangled black hair hangs down over a bearded face. The man was thickly made. His stomach wasn't flat or rippling with muscles, but he was broad of shoulder, thick of body and clearly muscled in the chest, arms and shoulders.

He was naked, which would have been a horrible visual if not for the sheet he kept over his lap. Beneath the tangled mess of hair and heard emerald green eyes opened and mouth twitched. Opening and closing trying to get the taste of stale beer and tobacco out.

???: “You know you drink and smoke to much Josh.”

Joshua McBride grunts gently and grabs the pack off the table next to the bed. A single smoke was lit and smoke blown out through his nose. He glanced around and saw her. Though, no one else would. Was she a figment of his imagination for his failure or had her ghost actually taken to haunting him? A constant reminder of the life he had failed to save.

Her name, in life, had been Joanna Reed. She had been kidnapped from her Fort Collins home on her 11th birthday. They hired the best. Joshua McBride. A bounty Hunter who didn't hunt bounties. He specialized in missing and exploited children. He found the girl and did what his training told him. Reported it to the local PD. Nothing the PD hated more then someone stomping around on their ground, but by the time the local PD mobilized the following morning Joanna Reed was dead and her captured gone.

12 hours. Had Joshua just gone in, Joanna Reed would have been back with her family. What had been Triumph turned into Torment in a split second...and now she stood at the foot of his bed dressed in the same blue and purple sun dress. Her brown hair cascading down her back and her little face serious. Concerned.

Joanna: “How long are you going to go through this?”

Joshua: “Leave.....”

The words cut off by a coughing fit, which he silenced by washing the cough down with stale, warm beer half flat from sitting overnight on the nightstand.

Joshua: “....me alone.”

The simple blue jeans and boxers sitting on the edge of the bed were pulled on beneath the covers before he stood. His upper body was covered in tattoos and scars. Car accident? Knife fight? Had he been shot? Unknown, the scars simply...were.

Joshua: “I have to prepare.”

Joanna: “Prepare for what? What have you got yourself into now Josh?”

Joshua: “A deaf guy. Truly. A deaf guy.”

The chuckle that left the large bearded man was dark. Self loathing and more then a hint mocking. A faint shake of his head threw his hair back and forth. Another hit taken from the cigarette before he glanced back at the space where Joanna had been standing and found it empty.

Joanna: “So what if he is deaf. Would that have stopped you from coming after me? If he had been dear?”

He spun quickly and lost his balance, falling back onto the corner of the bed. Joanna was standing inches from him, her face so close he could have smelled her, her eyes boring into his own.

Joshua: “The fact that he is dear is irrelevant. He is merely a stepping stone.”

Joanna: “A stepping stone to what?”

Joshua: “....A stepping stone to perfection.”

Joanna: “Is that what you really want? Perfection?”

Joshua: “It's as good as anything else.”

Joanna: “But it's not what you want.”

Before he could say anything else the little girl seemed to shimmer and vanish. Joshua waved his hand in front of his eyes wearily.

Joshua: “A deaf guy. I won't underestimate him. For all I know he would be daredevil. He is the Deaf Defender....me.....”

A twisted little smile touched the corners of his mouth and a hand pulled gently on the beard, eyes penetrating and empty.

Why had he chosen this life? This job and this road? Only time will tell that, all that anyone could know is he is here now and nothing will ever be the same again.

Joshua: “....my name is Death and the end....is here..”
