Ass Bandit

He knew this moment was coming.

After all, he had laid waste to almost everyone in the ring in such a brutal fashion that even Ryann had called to tell him that he gave their little girl nightmares the evening that they watched him on the Vindication Pre-Show ringside. That was all that anybody talked about as far as the Vindication Pre-Show was concerned. "He beat an old man almost to death!", and "He damn near crippled that girl who has a thing for RAW." was what he heard for the next few days. And of course, there was the hotel room with Isabel, which didn't sit well with her at all. Even the flowers and chocolates were mistaken for tokens of affection.

So it didn't surprise him that he was getting called into Mac Danny's office. Gregory was expecting to get read the Riot Act. He had never had good luck with authority figures. They were either upright and uptight assholes, or they wanted to use him as their personal bulldog. Either way, most of his authority figures got more than what they bargained for.

Gregory deeply sighed, before he rapped on the office door three times...

Mac: Enter!

Gregory opened the door and saw that Mac Danny was smiling like a damned fool. Gregory shut the door behind him, as Mac got to his feet and quickly seized Gregory's hand, shaking it in a vigorous manner...

Mac: That match you put on out there was fucking brilliant! I couldn't have asked for a better outcome for that match.

Gregory goes to say something, but is immediately cut off...

Mac: I mean, what was I thinking? Right? I put you into a match with a bunch of scrubs! Mike Miller has failed to produce in, like, forever! And Crest Falcon? That old bag deserved that beating! I mean, he should be in a retirement home, not a wrestling ring!

Gregory: Um, yeah, but...

Mac: And then I threw those two kids in that match, to see if I could really throw everyone for a loop, but you delivered! Man, and that intensity? I'm totally sorry I doubted you for a second!

Gregory: Uh, thanks. Is that all, sir?

Mac: Now, look man. I don't want to ruin this mojo you got working for you. You're clean and all that, but there are some concerns from the board that you still aren't all there in the head. Especially since Isabel filed a formal complaint about you.

Gregory: I apologized, and she misconstrued my gifts as ones of affection.

Mac: And I get that. I saw the whole thing. But needles in your body? I'm all for mutilation if it gets ratings, but the board sees it fit that you get some sort of counselling. Especially after that blood bath you created in the Elimination Chamber.

This shit again...

Every time that Gregory was forced to undergo counselling, his life went from whatever state it was to much worse in a short period of time.

First time he went to counselling? He got dragged from his home and put in foster care for three months. The second time he went to counselling, he wound up leaving his home and working for a criminal syndicate. And then there was when he first got blackballed in 2001 for the deliberate paralysis of Frankenstein, which he did in retaliation. There were countless relationships that were ended for couples therapy, and the PTSD counselling that was mandatory.

Needless to say, Gregory was not thrilled...

Gregory: No.

Mac: No?

Gregory: Did I stutter? Or is there an echo in here? I said no.

Mac's eyes widen with shock. It seems these days he's still used to being berated by his commentary partner Sam, and he doesn't seem to ever get his way with the board, but this was outright insubordination from a wrestler! Mac says...

Mac: You'll do it if you don't want a full-blown fucking lawsuit. As it stands, you have two grievous injury lawsuits and a sexual misconduct suit that you are potentially facing at this time. Now those could go away as long as you play ball...

Gregory: No, you don't understand...

Mac: Hey, I'm on your side one this one. I'm just glad they don't want to fire you. We need you! But this is not my call. If you want to stay in New Era, you'll do this.

Now, I've already found you a therapist. She's got a really good track record with professional athletes and she's smoking hot, to boot. She has already been contracted to handle your case. She'll be travelling with you as well. Whether you talk to her or not is up to you. The effort has already been made on my part.

Now the next thing. You heard about the tournament, right?

Gregory: Yes.

Mac: I got your opponent for your first round. His name is Tommy Zeller...

Mac tosses a manila folder across his desk and it lands in front of Gregory. He then says...

Mac: He runs with a group that call themselves the NEWera Heroes...

Mac blows a raspberry, while Gregory looks on, unfazed...

Mac: Anyways, these guys are a bunch of do-gooder asshats that need to know their place. But here's the thing, Zeller is off the wagon. I mean we're talking a major meth problem.

Gregory: And you're telling me because you want me to mentor him? Like his sponsor?

Mac: Oh God no! I like meth-head Tommy WAYYYYYY more than Mr. Stick in the Mud I'm a super-fucking-hero Tommy Zeller! No, I want you to push him! I want to see what his breaking point is! I want to see if I can turn him and use him against his buddies.

Gregory: You're joking, right?

Mac: Oh don't look all surprised! We all know this whole Buddhist thing is just a cover for what you really are. You say you're reformed, but you did exactly what the old "Glorious 1" would do! You went out there and you showed everyone that you are still the brutal monster that you were before. Hell, you might even be MORE scary now!

Gregory: So let me get this straight. You want me to enable Tommy's addiction for your benefit? Do you not think about the damage this is going to do to Tommy in the long run? Yet you want me to go to counselling because some board members think I'M dangerous?

Mac: Look, I gave her to you as a hot piece of ass. What you do with her is up to you. As for Tommy, well, there's a lot invested in him. He's the next contender for the North American Title, which is currently being held by this cunt by the name of Purity Solanas. I want him so fucking high out of his gourd that he destroys her when he faces her. And I want him to do it on MY terms. Fuck this super-hero bullshit.

Gregory thought long and hard on this proposition. He had to. His career was on the line.

On one hand, he wanted to help this Tommy Zeller. Gregory knew what about the demon of addiction. Years spent on painkillers, booze, and heroin had nearly destroyed his life. This man at least was a decent human being, even on drugs. Could Gregory say that about himself? He had lost control out there in the Elimination Chamber. He allowed his anger to get the better of him, and now Mac had him by the short and curly hairs.

He could say no, and make an enemy right here and now. He could make his stay here in New Era a painfully unpleasant one.

He could say yes and do Mac's bidding with little to no question whatsoever. He might find himself in Fabulous Disaster as another lackey for Mac to use.

But either option was not good for Gregory. Gregory then says...

Gregory: I do this on my terms.

Mac: What?

Gregory: If I work with him, he's gotta be clean. For my safety and his. If he's fucked up before he gets to Purity, your chance is blown. He's got to be clear in his mind to do this.

Mac: Fuck! You're right! Well, you're doing this whole good guy thing, right? Well, why don't you help guide him in the right direction? But guide him into our way of thinking. Romeo and the Funky Bunch haven't exactly been a friend to him as of late. Hell, he fell off the fucking wagon and they haven't as much been paying attention to him, have they? Romeo is too busy fighting over a gold strap, as have BrAndy. And Jenni Taylor is just an outright dunce. Let him know just how good of friends these so-called "Heroes" have been to him, while letting him know what kind of friend I am.

Gregory had a queasy feeling in his stomach. He was about to break up a team that he personally enjoyed seeing together. It was rare these days in professional wrestling that a group like that existed. Usually stables consisted of the dregs of professional wrestling, like Fabulous Disaster. But Mac did have a point about how all of them are pursuing their own efforts rather than banding together to help their fallen comrade. Then Gregory says...

Gregory: Why me?

Mac grins as he rubs his hands together, as he says...

Mac: Because you can get to him. You have the addiction, and its well-documented. You're also a despicable son of a bitch. And I know that you want another World Title run. I know you can do it. You've beaten that ridiculous asshole Romeo Stylez not once, but twice! James Stall? That punk got lucky against you. Needless to say, you do this, and you're in the World Title picture once again.

Not the prize he had in mind. If he had a distaste for therapists, that was mild compared to his World Title reigns. Shortly after two of his World Title wins, he found himself out of wrestling soon thereafter. His other two World Title reigns? Well, they were World Title reigns fueled by hatred, anger, and destruction to the highest degree and caliber. There would be no peace in Gregory's mind with the World Title around his waist.

Gregory: I've got a good shot in this tournament. I think I'll earn a World Title on my own merit. However, you can still do something better than that. Money. Cash. In my hands.

Mac: Money? Really?

Gregory: Yes. You want Purity crushed and him to do your dirty work? Then you're going to pay for it. Half a million dollars. Half up front, and the other half upon completion.

Mac: I should drug test you. You must be high to ask for something like that.

Gregory: You want it done or not? That is my final offer. I'm putting a lot on the line here. My dignity, career, and well-being are all up on the line.

Mac laughs at Gregory's final statement, as he says...

Mac: Dignity, that's a good one! As for career, well, I'm in charge of that one. But you know what? I could see well-being overall as being an issue. You're already tap-dancing on a land mine as it is. Randy wants a piece of you after what you did to Miss McCoy, and I'm certain that if Romeo wants to, he could send his buddies after you. You are out on a limb.

Gregory: So pay me for my troubles and I'll be on my way. I'll be his sponsor, mentor, or whatever. By the time I'm done with him, he's going to think you're his best friend and you will have a dead Purity Solanas at your feet. Rape her dead body for all I give a shit, just pay me.

It was now Mac's turn to think this one over. In his mind, this guy is expendable. Use once and destroy. He did NOT want Bartlett around. He has proven to be extremely dangerous, especially to authority figures. Again, that damned board that brought him in against his wishes. Just when he thought he saw a silver lining...

Mac then says...

Mac: Let's see what you do this week and I'll see if there's anything I can do on my end. This negotiation is not over.

Gregory nods, as he turns around and opens the door to the office. Gregory quickly leaves the office, even slamming the door, albeit not intentionally. At that moment, Isabel is walking down the hall. They lock eyes, and Gregory then says...

Gregory: What are you looking at? Its your damn fault that I'm in this fucking mess...

Before she could even respond, Gregory turns and walks away, as the scene ends with Isabel, a baffled look on her face...
