The Hammerstein Ballroom was one of those places that was known the world over for holding some pretty big events. And in just a few days the stars of NEWera would descend upon the place like superhero’s coming to the aid of the helpless people. Or a swarm of bugs. Or a plague that no one could find the cure for. Zoe wanted to think of herself as the damn plague, and Brandy as the helpless victim that she wanted to infect. Her attitude of ‘it’s all about me and my brain dead boyfriend rather than what was at stake’ was going to cost her everything in the end. She hadn’t forgotten what had happened between BrAndy and The Wrecking Crew over the past few months. It was like that nagging thought that never really disappeared from her mind.
Zoe was going to keep on coming back, like a snap bracelet from the 80’s, or some other trend from way back. That’s the way she had been and always would be. She never knew when to quit or give up. She didn’t quit on her former partner when he got injured, and she hadn’t quit on Rory yet despite everything that had happened in his past. Maybe if Brandy had taken a good look, a real good look at her past, she wouldn’t have said the shit she had. Zoe could say all of the bad shit she wanted but she was going to save that for later. All good things to those who wait.
”So what exactly are you doing anyway? Thought we were gonna run around Madison Square and paint the town red.”
Zoe giggled, crossing her legs on the plush hotel bed, strands of her blond hair falling into her face as she held the phone to her ear. The trip back to New York had been an interesting one to say the least. Rory had been a little nervous about coming back to the place, to old stomping grounds. She had squeezed his hand on the plane and told him to relax, that she was going to be there with him. He had seemed fine with that.
”I was looking up some stuff online, tweeting, you know that stuff. I saw what Brandy said about me and all of that crap so I’m sitting here debating with myself whether or not to respond now or let the stuff stew and do it later.”
”Brandy’s got a big mouth but not enough to back it up with. She’s gotta have that punk of a boyfriend to hold her hand and tell her what to do or say. And then you gotta remember she runs with that League of Heroes or whatever.”
Zoe rolled her eyes and slid off of the bed, standing on the floor and stretching out her limbs, eyeing the TV out of the corner of her eye. ”I know that.”
”So am I going to see your sweet face downstairs here or am I going to have to haul you out myself?”
Zoe could hear the playful tone in his voice, and she bit her lip a little, wanting to tell him to come up here and get her but…she’d rather go out running around Madison Square for a while and take Rory along to a couple of places she’d found. One that she knew would get his attention really quick. Oh she couldn’t wait to see the expression on his face when she told him.
”As tempting as it is babe to tell you to come and get me, I will get dressed here and meet you downstairs. I found a couple of places for us to see, one I’m going to leave a surprise until I see you.”
”Should I be worried?”
”No, but you’re going to enjoy yourself. Believe me. I’ll see you soon. Love you.”
”Love you too. Bye.”
She listened to the line go click before throwing the phone onto the bed and stretching out her arms again, walking to her suitcase and opening it up, pulling out a little outfit, strutting into the bathroom with it. She came out a few minutes later looking as pretty as ever, but ready to paint the town red with her boyfriend by her side. The Wrecking Crew was going to take this big city by storm and leave a mess in their wake. With one last check in the mirror, Zoe smiled and grabbed her purse, sauntering out of the room to head downstairs to meet up with Rory.
She found him standing by the entrance, lazily pulling at the leaves of one of the fake plants. When he heard her approaching he looked up and smiled, giving her an appreciative once over look before wrapping his arms around her in a hug, kissing her afterwards.
”You look good.”
”Thank you. Ready to go?”
”Yeah, let’s do this.”
The two walked out hand in hand, earning a few sweet looks from passing people who saw them as nothing more than a couple in love. Zoe blushed a little bit, quietly leading Rory in the direction she wanted to go.
”So where are we going first?”
”Figured we’d grab some lunch at this place called the Shake Shack, and then I’m going to take you to that little surprise place I mentioned earlier.”
”Sounds good to me. I’m still gonna wonder about that surprise you know.”
”I know, but I’m still not going to tell you until we’re done eating.”
Zoe grinned, winking at him, leading him onwards up the few blocks to the address of the aforementioned Shake Shack to grab a bite to eat. During their little lunch break, Zoe stopped in the middle of her sandwich and looked up at him.
”Promise me something though.”
”What’s that?”
”That you’ll kick Stall’s ass so hard he’ll be coughing up shoe laces for a month.”
Rory chuckled slightly, popping a french fry in his mouth.
”Don’t worry. He’ll get what’s coming to him.”
Zoe nodded, satisfied with that answer. The whole subject of James Stall and their past association with him as Genesis was still a sore subject to this day. The two of them held no love, no respect for the man who once wanted to bring them together under this united banner, and ended up being a pompous jackass out for himself.
A while later, after the lunch was over and they had got moving again, Zoe and Rory were standing at the curb as she attempted to hail a cab, groaning when they kept passing her by over and over. She was a pretty girl, how could you pass that up? Finally one screeched to a hault and Zoe grinned as Rory opened the door for her, watching her slip inside followed by himself. The cab driver looked at them in the mirror, smiling. “Where to ma’am?”
”Can you take us to the Museum of Sex? Here’s the address if you need it.”
Zoe showed him the small slip of paper that she had written it on, watching as the driver nodded his head and pulled away from the curb. She could just see out of the corner of her eye the shocked and surprised expression on Rory’s face as she turned to look at him. The scene between the two slowly started to fade away.
”We’re going…there?”
”Yep. Surprise!”
Fade to black.
”I could say the same thing to you Brandy. There really isn’t much to say to you really that hasn’t been said before after all the times we’ve met in the ring. And yes after those few times you knocked me flat on my ass and picked up a win, but only by your own stupid luck did you do it. When in all accounts you should of really lost.
I don’t expect people to believe in the things I say or do anymore anyway. I’ve walked away from all of that, from those that never believed in the first place, from the betrayal and the noise of it all. The phrase ‘Believe in Zoe McDraven’ used to mean something to myself, to the fans, to those of them who got up and clapped and cheered and whatever. But I walked away, you’re right. From the false lies and the people who were only in it for the short haul. They didn’t believe, they were just faking it. Like a bad sex session. Maybe in some circles it still means something to some people who believe that the old Zoe is still buried under all of this bitchiness, this vicious girl. They can go ahead and think that because she’s not going to come back, not now, not ever. I like the new me and I don’t care if you don’t Brandy. I’m not here to please you. I’m here to accomplish things and win the tag titles back from you and Andy. Oh yeah, I said it. Deal with it.
You don’t care about me? Good, feeling’s mutual. I could give two shits about you Brandy. But to accuse me of not caring about this company, my team, or myself is just rude. I care about all of that with all of my heart. People change, you know? And those that really care about the person will accept that and embrace the change, run with it. There are those fans out there that are running with this new me, and haven’t walked away from me yet. Fuck the rest of them that have. My team is everything. For the first time since my jump into the tag team division, I have a stable tag partner that isn’t going to abandon me. Who’s going to be there for me, who cares about me and loves me. Can you say that about your own partner?
And I care about myself to know exactly what I’m doing. And that is dealing with you in the only way I know how.”
