Alot of work goes on behind the scenes in New Era Wrestling. Right now a dozen or so hard working staff members are setting everything up so that World Champion Romeo Stylez can record a short video to entertain his fans, and hype is upcoming match with Kyle Travis. Two big, burly men in black shirts was walking around with a large green screen. making sure it's exactly where it needs to be. Another man in a black shirt is holding on to a ladder to make sure it doesn't tip over, while a woman in a black shirt is adjusting the lights that hang from above, it looks like she's adding different colored bulbs in different sockets. Standing off in the corner is another unknown staff member, who is working with a computer that controls the lights. Another employee is setting up a fan behind the camera that's pointing at the green screen. All of them doing their part to help make this upcoming promotional video everything Romeo Stylez wants it to be. These are the unsung heroes of NEW. The men and women who most of the wrestlers and fans rely on to make sure the show goes on, but not one of them will ever get the recognition they deserve. One more worker walks into view with white tape, and uses it to mark an X in front of the green screen. Everything else appears ready, as one last employee is told to go get The World Champion.
.................................................................................................................................................................
The scene opens up with Romeo Stylez standing in front of the camera. The shot is only of him from the waist up, and he's wearing a blue button up dress shirt, with his pair of sunglasses hanging from the collar. While we know he's standing in front of a green screen, the special effects crew has made it look like he's standing on the beach, with waves from the ocean behind him crashing onto the sand. The sound effects guy is doing an awesome job of matching the sound of the ocean with the video behind him, as well as mixing in a few sounds of seagulls every few seconds. The fan from earlier makes it look like Romeo's hair is blowing in the breeze, and one of the lights above gives the entire scene a pink glow to it. Then Romeo opens his mouth, and the concept behind this entire skit is made a little more clear.
"Hello, my name is Romeo, and I'm looking for my Juliet. I was born in a small town in Indiana, and was always taught that respect is the most important thing in the world. My favorite movies are romantic comedies, and old animated Disney movies like Aladdin. I enjoy listening to Taylor Swift on my iPhone, and taking long walks on the beach. I also enjoy wearing quirky outfits, with bright colors, and sometimes glitter. I'm just looking for a woman to share my soul with. Somebody who shares my passions and is able to keep up with all the new and greatest trends. A woman who isn't afraid to tell the world how much she loves me on Facebook, Twitter, and whatever social network becomes popular while we're together."
Romeo lowers his head, as the setting behind him changes from a beach, so what looks like the inside of a locker room. The lighting switches over to a hint of blue instead of pink. Romeo puts his sunglasses on, unbuttons his dress shirt, and ends up taking it off completely. For a brief moment we see the hand of one of the unknown crew workers, as they hand Romeo his World Championship belt. Once he's got the belt on his shoulders, he looks up from the ground, looking through his sunglasses with a smile on his face.
"Well Kyle did that little video gave you whatever insight you wanted from me. I know how concerned you appeared to be about my image and wanted to clear some things up. I don't typically have the free time to keep up with any of the modern television shows or movies. I do get to listen to music while I'm at the gym though. I'm not sure where they're ranked in the top 100 or whatever, but when I'm getting my blood pumping I try to listen to something upbeat in tempo, but also something you could dance to. Alexendra Stann is pretty good at that sort of thing, or the guys who sing my theme song, Parry Gripp. After the workout I'll wind down with something calming, Jason Mrax, John Mayer, both awesome for that kind of vibe. But let's be honest here Kyle, I know you don't care about what I do in my spare time. Everything you said, every comment, every rhetorical question, it was just a way for you to try and insult me.
Romeo shakes his head from left to right, that stupid smile still on his face.
"Some of them were pretty weak if I'm going to be honest with you Kyle. I mean at one point you were comparing my small town to an Amish community. Have you ever actually spoken to somebody of Amish origin? They're very nice people Kyle. Humble, hard working people. I'm also concerned that you look down on the education system in smaller towns. I mean one history lesson might have gotten your point across, but you insisted on throwing history lesson after history lesson, until I actually forgot what it was you were trying to teach me other than dates and historical events. So let me inform you Mr. Travis, that even small Indiana towns have schools, and those schools do include history courses.
Some of your other insults might have had a bit more sting to them if you took the time to cross check your facts. Honestly I think you were trying to make me doubt myself when you brought up how I won this championship belt."
Romeo pauses for a minute, to look at the belt hanging from his shoulder. The smile still hasn't fallen from his face, as he looks back over at the camera.
"I was lucky to earn this title shot. Winning a fatal fourway, against this company's top wrestlers. Heck I pinned Tombstone, in his hometown of Berlin to earn that title shot. Then you went and said something even more ignorant, saying my win over James Stall was just luck. If me getting a win over James Stall is luck, then I should head out to Vegas and make a killing. So Kyle, let me return the favor for a moment, and give you a bit of a history lesson. Not a history of Germany, or The Alamo, or any terrorist attacks. This Kyle, is the history, of Romeo Stylez, and James Stall.
Ya see James and I weren't always fighting over The World Championship. Before we climbed to the top of this company, we were battling over the North American Championship. This little event shows that maybe I have more in common with you than I'd like to admit Kyle. Because after James Stall went through hell to defend that title, I came out with the Key to Excellence I had earned. I cashed it in, and in our first one on one encounter, I dropped James Stall before he ever had a chance. For those keeping score, that would put us at Romeo one, James Stall zero."
Still smiling, Romeo takes his sunglasses off, and places them on top of his head.
"It was a fluke some people said. Romeo Stylez is just a clown who took advantage of James Stall when he was down. Two weeks later James Stall and I faced off again for that very same title, and people considered James Stall the odds on favorite. Well Kyle on that night for the second consecutive time I pinned James Stall for the three count. The critics got a little quieter Kyle, but they were still there. James hadn't recovered yet, he was still hurt, or they shared your belief and called me lucky. So here is where things might get a little hard for you to believe Kyle. At last years Vidnication, James Stall and I ended up facing off once again one on one. The best part, to avoid another fluke win by me, it was booked as a two out of three falls match. In case you didn't know, let me show you a similar image to how that match ended."
Romeo grabs his World CHampionship belt off his shoulder, and raises it in the air. With the title still up high, he looks into the camera.
"I won again Kyle. The proverbial hat trick, three wins, no losses. I thought after that nobody would ever question me again. I mean somebody would have to be awfully stubborn to overlook all of those accomplishments right?"
The World Champ lowers his title, and places it back on his shoulder. His eyes are locked on the belt as he speaks again.
"Imagine how much it hurt to hear that after beating James Stall again, fair and square, for this very title, that someone like Kyle Travis still used the word luck to describe me. Four wins to zero against the longest reigning World Champion in this company's history, and I still have to prove myself to some people. I guess I need to accept that as a a professional wrestler, trying to prove myself is a never ending quest. Words hurt Kyle, you cut me deep, and vengeance isn't exactly the heroic response, but people will have to forgive me, because now it's time for me to get some more things off of my chest. There are things about you Mr. Travis."
Romeo looks back at the camera, and that smile of his, is finally gone. His eyes look cold, as he glares into the camera lens.
"You Kyle Travis, are an idiot. You dare to speak on behalf of the fans, or our peers. Nobody looks at me and thinks I can be the face of this company? Nobody? Really!? I think I understand why you dislike me so much Kyle, it's because as young as I am, as little experience as I have in this business, there might be more people who believe in me than believe in you. Nobody believes in me Kyle, except maybe the tag team champions Brandi and Andy. Both of them called me up to congratulate me on the win, both of them have publicly supported me in front of a camera, in front of a crowd of fans. Tommy Zeller looks up to me, and Jennifer Taylor has asked me to look after her loved ones when they enter the arena. These people love me Kyle, they believe in me, they trust me, and while you might hate that they claim to be heroes like me, I absolutely love it. There is nothing wrong with walking the straight and narrow, nothing wrong with holding yourself to a higher level of morals and ethics. But then again, you hate that word don't you Kyle.
You think I walked into this company day one claiming to be the best? You think I call myself a hero because I saw one too many superhero movies? I didn't use the word hero to describe myself until after I had read thousands of emails from fans who called me it themselves. You know why I wear that cape to the ring every night Kyle? Do you even know how I got that cape Kyle? I didn't go out and buy it, thinking it would put me over with the crowd. Tombstone gave it to me as a gift, as a symbol of his faith in me, and I wear it proudly to show everyone that I'm willing to carry the weight of the term hero if that's what they need. The weight on my shoulders would crush a man like you Kyle."
Romeo spits on the floor, baring his teeth like a wild animal.
"You accuse me of standing on a pedestal, yet you're the man whose too damn pride to ever show any sign of weakness. Want to know another man who believes in me? They call him Bombtrack, but you might know him as the man who beat you two weeks ago. Why don't you mention him Kyle? Why don't you explain to the world that while there's nothing a man like me can teach you, I hold a victory over the man who beat you last show? It's because you're full of it. I'm sure you believe Bombtrack, like me, just got lucky. Maybe you were sick, or not at one hundred percent. I wonder if you'll shake off your upcoming loss to me as well as you shook off your loss to him. If I pin your shoulders to the mat will you just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and tell yourself you didn't make any mistakes?
Because that's what it looks like you're doing from my perspective. I give you advice, and you throw it away like it's garbage, because you're a six time world champion, and I'm nobody. You keep that attitude up Kyle, and you will never, EVER, become a seven time World Champion. You've made yourself this glass ceiling, you know everything there is to know, which means you'll never get better. I mean you keep in shape, saw you sparring with some studs there, but I didn't see anything new. In fact, what I saw, was you land the same damn moves you've been using to get to where you are. I was hoping I'd get to face you while you're at your peak, but it turns out you've plateaud long ago."
Romeo takes in a deep breath, doing his best to calm himself.
"I'm not the kind of guy who gets angry Kyle, but you managed to do it. So allow me to apologize to the fans for the spoiler, but I'm walking out of New TV with the win. Whether I drop you with The Dazzler, or have to go to the top rope and hit you with a Shimmer. Hell maybe a pinfall victory isn't enough. You talk about your Pridebreaker, and how it's unbreakable. I too have a submission move Kyle, I like to call it The Bro Code. Like you Kyle, I have faith in my move, and believe once it's locked in, nobody gets out. Call me cheesy Kyle, but nobody breaks The Bro Code. If I locked that in Kyle, if I made you tap out, admit defeat while still conscious, would you still be able to stand in front of a camera and talk such a big game?"
Another deep breath, then Romeo lets out a quiet sigh.
"It's sad, but I think you could. As good as you are at wrestling, you are even better at twisting the truth, and warping reality. The once and future king, The Canadian Legend, they don't properly describe you. I think the perfect nickname for you, would be Denial Kyle. Kids watching at home could hear you talk about how great you are, and say "there goes Denial Kyle, ignoring all his flaws again" When one of my fellow wrestlers beat you, like Tombstone might at Vindication, and you go on to downplay his win he'll know to ignore the ramblings of Denial Kyle. I wasted my breath, trying to reach out to you, trying to make you better. Now I see, there is no hope for Denial Kyle. So I'm not going to step into the ring with you to test your abilities, to teach you a lesson, or to prove a point. I'm just going to step into that ring and do my job. I'm going to beat you, one way or another, then move on. Because whether or not you accept me as a hero, as long as I'm the World Champion I am this company's leader, and I can't waste any more time on a lost cause like Denial Kyle."
Romeo pulls his sunglasses down back onto his face. And walks out of the camera view. The screen goes back to it's original green color, and the camera fades to black.
