BEST IN NEWERA
[ * ]
[A gym somewhere, late at night.]

[Guess who's going at the heavy bag, hitting it with punches that lead into elbows that lead into kicks that lead into... You get the idea. Purity Solanas moves almost too fast to really take in. This isn't pro wrestling stuff she's practicing, the theatrical punching and that stuff. This is her unloading some genuine Thai kickboxing technique on the poor, defenseless bag, which sways under the assault.]

[We see this because there's a camera moving in, and thanks to that camera, we see Lana Wu approaching. She has an iPad in hand.]

LANA: Purity! Purity!

[Purity throws a few more fluid elbows, thump thump thump, and stops to look over at Lana. She's breathing heavily, sweating. She's dressed appropriately for her exercise.]

PURITY: Lana? Look... I'm... in the middle... of something. Can't it... wait?

LANA: Noooooooope nope nope. You need to see this. Now.

[Purity makes a face like a kid being told to do their homework. Still, she steps closer to Lana, to look at the iPad.]

[What follows is a few moments of Purity and Lana watching Nightmare's promo, the audio carrying, as Nightmare says various things and makes various allegations.]

PURITY: Turn it off.

LANA: I can't believe this guy. "An Asian," like I'm not, you know, a successful general manager and--

PURITY: He said... he was gonna send me... back to the kitchen.

[Purity looks over at Lana, and the intensity of her glare is enough to make Lana take a half-step away from the blonde.]

LANA: Well, yes, among other things like breaking your neck and--

PURITY: No. All that stuff, whatever, that's just wrestler talk, that's just stuff people say. But... back to the kitchen. He actually said that.

LANA: Y-Yes.

[Purity lets out a long, slow breath, nearly a sigh.]

PURITY: Okay. Okay. I'm calm. I'm... calm.

[Lana Wu looks on, perhaps worried for her own safety. Purity closes her eyes.]

PURITY: Just gotta... breathe in, then out, then... in... out...

LANA: Are you okay?

[Purity ignores Lana and continues her breathing.]

LANA: Purity? Hello? Earth to Purity? Purity! Purity, what are you going to do about this? Purity? Can you hear me, Purity? Hello? Puri--

[Purity's eyes snap open and she raises her hand as if she might slap Lana. Lana instinctively tries to cower and protect herself, but Purity doesn't actually move her hand. She just lets it hang there for a second, before realizing what she's doing.]

PURITY: Jesus. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. It's just... look, this is... I'm all amped up, and, and this guy, Nightmare, on top of everything else...

LANA: I'm just -- I'm here to help, okay?

PURITY: I know. I know.

[Purity looks away from Lana, and down at her own hand. She slowly closes it into a fist.]

PURITY: Just like I know... that Nightmare... is pushing exactly the wrong buttons.

LANA: Wrong buttons? I think he wants you angry, Purity, I think--

PURITY: He doesn't want me angry.

LANA: --I think he wants you to go crazy on him. I think he gets off on that. The punishment he can take, it's... it's, like, inhuman. And he likes it. Something's WRONG in his brain. He's going to try to wear you down just by the sheer fact that he can absorb so much of what you put out... Because if you even lighten up the pressure for an instant--

PURITY: I know what Nightmare is like, Lana. I've been in a match with him before.

LANA: No. You haven't. You've been in a match with Nightmare, Trevor Hyatt, and Adam Jones before. And Nightmare and Adam spent that whole time beating each other to bits. So no, you've never faced the full force Nightmare brings.

[Purity is still looking at her fist. She drifts off into a thoughtful pause. Then, slowly, she lifts her head and slowly turns it to look over at Lana.]

PURITY: You know what I hear when you say that, Lana?

LANA: Um, hopefully, the... words... that I said?

PURITY: I hear that I haven't had a proper match with Nightmare -- and he's never had a proper match with me.

[Purity turns away, paces a few moments, and then turns back, stalking toward Lana and the camera.]

PURITY: You know what gets me about Nightmare, Lana? He's good. He's really good. He might take me to my breaking point on Sunday. He might take back the title I took from him. I know that that might happen. But I can't get over one little detail. That he has to make a big show of it all. It's not enough for him to just do something and be done with it. He has to brag, he has to make sure the whole world is watching. This is the guy who, in the same breath, will say he's not doing the stuff he does to get attention, and then two words later will say it's to send a message. D'you not see where he's soundin' confused there, Lana?

LANA: I--

PURITY: And then look at me. I just do what I gotta do. If Mac Danny messes with my matches, I shut Mac Danny up. Last time on NEWtv, when the Wreckin' Crew were takin' me down, that's what showboatin' got me. That's what sendin' a message gets you. I wanted to send the message to Romeo that I could handle anyone, anything, any team. It blew up in my face. Because I was so focused on the message I was sendin' that I missed what was right in front of my face. Sending a message. I'm not here to send messages. I'm here to win championships. I'm here to be the best. I take down my opponents, and that speaks for itself. I don't have to worry about all this theatrical look-what-I-did crap. I don't need to explain why I do what I do. I don't need anyone else to know why, even. I just need to do it. Like I need to do this.

LANA: Need to--

PURITY: I'm TALKIN'. I need to take Nightmare and do whatever it takes to put him down for the three seconds it'll take to retain my title. I made a weak showin' against the Wreckin' Crew. But I got James Stall breathing down my neck now. Romeo Stylez. Mac Danny. Y'know, you said the other day, Lana, that I'm the first female North American Champion. That's true. I might be the first female NEWera World Champion. That'd be nice. But I can't just be as good as these guys in the boys' club. I can't just be their equal. I have to be their superior. And that starts on NEWtv, in Albany. That starts in the ring with me and Nightmare. It starts when I stop worrying about how the fans and the office and the smarts and the podcasts will interpret my actions. It starts when I just turn it all off and do what my instincts tell me. And let me tell you, Lana, I got some killer instincts.

[Lana actually looks a little nervous, standing so close to Purity. Purity's voice is raised and she's got a look on her face like she might shoot lasers out of her eyes.]

PURITY: Y'know what you said the other day, Lana? That I wasn't a pro wrestler. That I was a fighter. And that's how this is gonna be. I'm not gonna come to Nightmare and challenge him to sports entertainment. I'm gonna get in that ring with him... and it's gonna be a fight. I know he's good for a brawl. I know I am, London or otherwise. And in a fight, it all comes down to who wants it more. Him? He wants his title back because he's pissy about losing it, and he wants to hurt me because he likes to hurt people. He's just got, y'know, solipsism, whatever the word is, he's just tryin' to please himself. I'm tryin' to prove that I'm the best. Not the best in North America. Not the best woman in NEWera. The BEST in NEWera, point-blank, full stop. He's got some sick burns about sendin' me to the kitchen. But I've got the fire.

[Purity stops, and draws in a deep breath. She steps back, away from Lana.]

PURITY: Send me to the kitchen. He has no idea what kinda pain he's in for, for that one.

[Purity makes a disgusted shake of her head and turns back toward her bag. Lana starts to say something, falters, and then succeeds on the second try.]

LANA: Don't let him goad you into making any mistakes.

[Purity turns her head to look back, over her shoulder.]

PURITY: Y'know, normally, Lana, I get mad and I flip out and I lose it a little bit and then I'm over it. But this ain't like that. Nightmare did the stupidest thing he coulda possibly done. He's actually made me ANGRY.

[Purity focuses on the bag. The camera turns back to Lana.]

[Off-camera, the sound of Purity beating on the bag picks up again. Lana's lips slowly curl into a cruel smile.]
