Kevin Raines has never been what you'd call a good, happy, family-oriented man. He's lied about his age, his name, his occupation, what he's licensed to do and whether or not he was wanted for things for so long even he doesn't know the real truth in some cases. He's worked as a con-artist, a fence, a drug dealer, an arms dealer and pretty much anything else you can think for a small-time hood just looking for a quick buck. For years, he's done nothing but run, from his employers, his customers, his contacts, the law, his past, from what friends he'd ever had and especially, from his family.
New Era Wrestling was supposed to be his road to redemption.
He'd shown up and weaseled his way into being "The Good Doctor" Adam Jones' agent, despite not having the first real clue about what the job would actually entail or even who Adam Jones actually was for the most part but none of that mattered to Kevin. This was his chance to go legit, to reclaim his real name and maybe, just maybe, actually make something of himself that didn't require him to dodge bullets, subpoenas and jail time.
A funny thing happened during what amounted to his latest con job here, it started to work! Adam Jones gave him a chance he knew he never deserved and allowed him to run wild with certain aspects and Kevin actually proved himself a decent promoter of something other than himself for once. He could also actually call Adam a somewhat of a real friend, something that Kevin had not had in years. Things were looking up for the man who first tried his hand at the wrestling business almost a decade ago in CPW under multiple assumed names.
On December 3, 2012, in the wee morning hours following NEWTV 55, Kevin Raines's friend, client, and shot at redemption, "The Good Doctor" Adam Jones, was found in a pool of his own blood with injuries sufficient to guarantee this road was over. Kevin Raines spent the next month trying to see how bad things really were and now, having found the answer, he finds himself sitting in some random bar in New York City, a bottle of pills and a glass of whiskey in front of him, doing what he's been doing for the last twenty years, contemplating his next move. As he stares at the glass, the last voice he'd ever expected to hear, greets him from just behind the stool.
Robbie Priest: Bloody hell, Kevin...
Kevin slowly turns around to find his cousin, former NEW World Heavyweight Champion Robbie Priest, standing there with his usual disapproving expression plastered onto his face.
Kevin Raines: Puh....Priest.. fuh... fancy meeting you here...
He glances around the place nervously as if expecting to see Priest's usual back-up, Tombstone and the Wildebeest, lurking in the shadows preparing to strike.
Kevin Raines: You're not here to tune me up are ya?
Priest stares at him, dumbfounded into near speechlessness.
Robbie Priest: What the bloody fuck are you babbling about. Kevin?
Before Kevin can answer him, Priest raises a hand to cut him off.
Robbie Priest: Nevermind, the odds are good that I really don't want to know...
Kevin's head droops as the man visibly deflates in shame.
Kevin Raines: Don't worry, I haven't done anything like that since before TGD hired me.
Priest crosses his arms, his face a mask of skepticism.
Robbie Priest: Do you have a proof of that then?
Kevin turns around to stare at his booze and pills again.
Kevin Raines: Leave me alone if you're not gonna finish me, Priest...
Priest just stands there as Kevin picks up his glass and drains it.
Robbie Priest: And how many does that make?
Kevin shrugs.
Kevin Raines: With any luck, it'll be the first of many...
Priest stares at the things in front of his cousin and shakes his head.
Robbie Priest: Tell me, for the Love of God, that you weren't about to pop those or crush them up and snort them...
Kevin stares at the bottle of pills for a second, seemingly losing himself in the label. Priest's arms drop to his sides as his cousin goes dead silent.
Robbie Priest: Earth to bloody Kevin...
Kevin swallows hard and then cocks his head to the right as he continues staring at the bottle of pills.
Kevin Raines: I can understand why people would...
He picks up the bottle and continues to lose himself in it's shape, color, texture and smell.
Kevin Raines: What do I have to stop me anymore? I've alienated everyone I've ever met and my own family can't stand the sight of me, much less love me...
Priest grabs the bottle and snatches it away right out of his cousins' hands.
Robbie Priest: If you say that again, I'm going to thrash you myself right here!
Kevin turns to face him, looking completely defeated.
Kevin Raines: Why? What good will it do? What have I got left?
Priest just shakes his head.
Robbie Priest: Maybe a right proper hiding is what you need!
Kevin shrugs.
Kevin Raines: Go on and do it then...
Priest just stares at him, shock and disgust alternating his his eyes.
Robbie Priest: What the blood fuck happened to you, Kevin? You used to have a bigger ego than Amber could ever dream of! Randy couldn't keep up with you, no one could and yet, here you sit...
Kevin shakes his head sadly.
Kevin Raines: I've got nothing... my only client is gone and he's not coming back.
Priest stares at him incredulously.
Robbie Priest: You thick bloody twit! You think just because Adam Jones is hurt...
Kevin leaps to his feet.
Kevin Raines: He was all I had, Robbie! That was it, my last roll of the dice... my one shot at going straight and staying above water for one and now his career is pretty well on hold, maybe permanently and I have no back-up plan.. no other play.. no con I can just run and score a quick one on... I've got nothing, man!
Kevin slumps back onto the bar stool as Priest stares at him long and hard.
Robbie Priest: He's not the only professional wrestler you know...
Kevin's head remains hung low, his eyes averted from his cousins' harsh gaze.
Kevin Raines: The only one that would talk to me...
Priest almost laughs.
Robbie Priest: Is that right?
Kevin nods sadly and Priest smirks.
Robbie Priest: Including family?
Kevin looks up in shock.
Kevin Raines: What?
Priest shrugs, the smirk still firmly entrenched.
Robbie Priest: It so happens that I might be in the market for proper representation...
Kevin stands up excitedly but Priest cuts him off before he can say anything.
Robbie Priest: If you try anything like you did with TGD, if I catch you sniffing anything illegal, if I so much as catch you looking at something that even bloody hints that you're trying to pull a snowjob on me...
Kevin nods slowly.
Kevin Raines: I get it...
Priest nods.
Robbie Priest: We have an understanding then? You work for me, not the other way around?
Kevin nods and Priest extends his hand.
Robbie Priest: Then shake my hand like a man and we have an accord...
Kevin looks down at the hand and then up to his cousin's eyes. He takes a deep breath and then shakes the hand. Priest smiles and pulls him in for a hug. Kevin accepts it with tears in his eyes.
Kevin Raines: Thank you...
Priest nods.
Robbie Priest: Do you have anything else planned for your visit to this establishment?
Kevin shakes his head and Priest quickly pays off his tab.
Robbie Priest: All right then... we have a plane to catch... for a rather special appearance before heading of to San Francisco. You are going to appear with me in public...
Kevin's eyes go wide.
Kevin Raines: But...
Priest raises a finger and Kevin nods.
Kevin Raines: Yes sir.
Six hours later, Kevin and Priest pull up outside a house in Indianapolis, Indiana with a second rental car just pulling up as well. Stepping from the car to meet them is Priest's wife, Alexi, his two children, his brother Scotty and Scotty's wife and baby as well. Kevin stares at the kids and then glances back to the house and nearly craps his pants.
Kevin Raines: THIS is the appearance?
Priest nods.
Kevin Raines: I'm...
Priest points an accusing finger and Kevin swallows hard.
Kevin Raines: Standing right here, making no noise and pretending I don't exist...
Priest nods.
Robbie Priest: Quite right you are... they don't know you're coming so you remain right where you are until I call you over.
Kevin nods as the rest of the crew steps around the garage and makes their way to the front door of what can only be described as a McMansion. Before the bell can be rung, the door flies open to reveal the smirking face of a stunningly hot blond woman. Priest smiles, shaking his head.
Robbie Priest: Always one to make an entrance even when you're not the one making the entrance, aren't you, Amber?
Amber Raines nods, the almost arrogant smirk widening to a full smile.
Amber Raines: What can I say...
Priest smiles and hugs her.
Robbie Priest: In deed, you are just awesome that way... it's good to see you...
Just as he steps back, little Scarlett runs as fast as her little legs will take her. She claps on to Amber's ankles happily.
Scarlett Priest: AMBA!!!!
Amber looks down at the eighteen month-old Scarlett and grins despite herself.
Amber Raines: She's gotten fast...
Priest nods.
Robbie Priest: She figured out how to run and that was all she wrote...
He nods to Alexi who approaches with their almost month-old infant.
Robbie Priest: This one...
Amber stares at her and smiles.
Robbie Priest: Is named Amber Raines Priest...
Amber looks over at him, shock momentarily usurping her face.
Amber Raines: You... really did it?
Priest nods and Amber returns her gaze to the baby named after her.
Alexi Priest: Would you like to hold her?
Suddenly, the usual confidence Amber exudes leaves her as her eyes go wide in fear.
Amber Raines: ..You do not want a baby around me..
Knowing his cousin is always apprehensive around children, Priest just shakes his head.
Robbie Priest: Amber?
She looks to him, still in shock and covered in fear.
Amber Raines: Yeah?
He laughs, patting her on the shoulder.
Robbie Priest: Shut up and hold the baby...
Amber just stands there as Alexi hands Little Amber over to her namesake. Everybody tries not to laugh as they see the nerves rolling across Amber's face. After a solid minute of stunned silence, the confident grin returns to her face.
Amber Raines: Well, you've already got a head start there little miss... you have the most awesome name ever!
As everybody smiles, Scotty and Angelyka walk up with their baby girl.
Angelyka Valentine: We'll have to get you to hold Kaari too...
Amber nods and leads everybody but Priest inside. As he watches them go, he slips back to the front of the garage and nods to Kevin. He waves and Kevin follows him to the front door where he pauses in the way, making sure no one inside can see the man behind him.
Robbie Priest: So.. where is everyone else?
Amber has just handed little Amber back to Alexi when she nods to the garage.
Amber Raines: Linds went with C.J. and Randy for a ride to the store... they should be back in an hour or so.
Priest nods, taking a step into the room.
Robbie Priest: So it's just you then for now?
Amber nods, frowning slightly.
Amber Raines: Yeah... why?
Priest nods to the doorway.
Robbie Priest: I brought you a late Christmas gift...
Amber looks to the doorway as her big brother, Kevin, walks in. Amber stares at him in shock, desperately trying to play it cool as her estranged oldest brother stands there nervously, not really sure what, if anything, he should be doing. Priest closes the door behind them and everybody waits for the explosion. Amber bites her lip for a second and then nods to him, trying to come off almost curt to him.
Amber Raines: So.. how long are you here for this time?
Not really knowing the answer, Kevin shrugs. Amber nods, looking like she can't decide if she should scream, cry or throw him out.
Amber Raines: Well... nice to see you...
Kevin nods slowly, trying to smile.
Kevin Raines: It's nice to see you too...
Suddenly, Amber can't take it anymore and charges at him, leaping into his arms and hugging him fiercely with tears streaming down her face. Kevin accepts the embrace and hugs her back as Priest nods on.
Robbie Priest: Told you she'd be bloody pleased...
An hour and half later, after everybody has returned and accepted Kevin into the fold again, Amber pulls Priest aside near the formal dining room where no one else can see them.
Amber Raines: Did you really...
Priest grins, knowing where this is going.
Robbie Priest: Tell you to shut up? I believe I did, yes.
Amber nods and then slaps him across the face. Priest checks his face for blood, grinning despite it.
Robbie Priest: I bloody deserve that, don't I?
Amber nods in total agreement.
Amber Raines: Yes... thank you...
Priest nods as Amber looks at him expectantly.
Amber Raines: So...
He smirks back, playing her usual game.
Robbie Priest: So?
Amber crosses her arms, trying to look annoyed while letting him know she's really just playing.
Amber Raines: You're not seriously gonna sit there and try to tell Me.. that you're so awesome he just appeared out of thin air, are you?
Priest shakes his head, smirking playfully back at her.
Robbie Priest: Perish the thought, Love...
Amber nods, trying not to explode.
Amber Raines: So!!!!!
Priest's grin grows at the sight of her excitement.
Robbie Priest: How did I do it?
Amber nods enthusiastically, unable to keep herself from looking like the little girl she feels like at seeing her family back together again.
Priest shrugs.
Robbie Priest: I hired him...he bloody works for me now...
Her eyes go wide in shock that he would even consider doing such a thing given her brother's past.
Amber Raines: You did WHAT???
He grins.
Robbie Priest: I decided I required proper representation... and he was available... however, I told him if he tried to market me the way he did Adam Jones, I'll kick his bloody ass... and then let you and Randy choose his punishment... he seemed to grasp my meaning...
Amber pounces on her cousin, hugging him like little girl.
Amber Raines: You really are that awesome, you know...
Priest laughs as he hugs her back.
Robbie Priest: Let's not get crazy here, Love...
Amber steps back, waving her hand dismissively.
Amber Raines: Psh... I'm Amber Raines, I don't always do crazy... but when I do.. I prefer... awesomely eccentric...
Priest laughs again, knowing exactly what she means.
Robbie Priest: So, how's retirement treating you?
Caught off-guard by the question, Amber's jaw drops.
Amber Raines: Retirement?
Priest shrugs, trying again.
Robbie Priest: Extended vacation?
She smiles, her grin coming back from it's momentary lapse of reason.
Amber Raines: Better...
Priest nods, trying one more time.
Robbie Priest: Awesomely Hardcore Hiatus?
Amber almost laughs.
Amber Raines: Laying it on a little thick with that, aren't ya?
Priest crosses his arms in mock annoyance just like she did earlier.
Robbie Priest: You loved it and you know it...
Amber starts to retort but then just nods in agreement.
Amber Raines: Yeah...I did..
He nods, his arms remaining crossed as he looks at her expectantly, the family resemblance showing even more.
Robbie Priest: So?
She shrugs, seemingly genuinely unsure.
Amber Raines: I don't know.. it's been nice not having to worry about anybody trying to kill me for being more awesome than them.. and if I get the itch, i can just roll down the street and train some, wrestle an indy, have them all bow down and worship me properly and come back home without ever leaving town...
He drops his arms, grinning.
Robbie Priest: So, you're loving it then, aren't you?
She nods as if a small child caught with her hand in the cookie jar.
Amber Raines: Especially now that Randy isn't trying to die on me every five minutes and C.J. is home a lot...
Priest nods.
Robbie Priest: Have you guys had the kid discussion then?
Amber shrugs, her matching grin back and in full force.
Amber Raines: Yeah... not happening for a while...
Priest shrugs, giving up that one without a fight.
Robbie Priest: Had to ask...
She smiles broadly, the playful arrogance replaced with a genuine familial love.
Robbie Priest: I know, that's why you're the responsible cousin... and why I love you for it...
She hugs him again.
Amber Raines: So, what is it Kevin is gonna do for you?
Priest shrugs.
Robbie Priest: I'll think of something, even if it's just trying to keep everybody away from Disturbed and James Stall.
Amber nods and priest glances back to the living room.
Robbie Priest: Could they visit a while longer, while Kevin and I go on this trip to California for my match with Stall this weekend? I'm not entirely certain what, if anything, he might have in mind but I know it won't be good and with Disturbed apparently angry with me just for saying hello to his bird...
Amber nods, smiling.
Amber Raines: You know I love having family around to make me the center of attention...
Priest nods in agreement.
Robbie Priest: I am aware, yes...
Amber hugs him again, kissing his cheek.
Amber Raines: Best present ever!
