Part One: Finding one's inner strength
The scene opens up inside a packed airport somewhere in Northern California. The airport is filled with a diverse crowd of people all here for different reasons. There's a southern Caucasian family that had just flown in to enjoy a vacation to Disney Land. On another side of the airport is a couple made up of a Caucasian male and a Hispanic woman. The couple are waiting for a plane to fly them to Texas, where the man hopes to impress his woman's family. Somewhere in customs is an older Middle Eastern man being put through extra security that the TSA swears is completely random. There are literally hundreds of different stories going on in this airport right now, but the camera eventually brings us to a pair of friends waiting for a plane to Los Angeles. One is the newly crowned 2012 New Era Wrestling Face of the Year Romeo Stylez.
The self proclaimed Sensational One is sitting down wearing a pair of faded jeans and a pink t-shirt with the words New Era Wrestling written in black. He's also wearing a pink baseball cap with NEW written on the front. On his face are his trademarked sunglasses, and his face is looking down as he plays Angry Birds on his new Galaxy 3 cell phone. He seems to be having a good time flinging his wingless birds into the evil piggies.
Sitting next to Romeo Stylez is one of his closest friends, fifteen year old Rebecca Black. Rebecca is dressed a little nicer than Romeo, wearing a pale blue dress with yellow sunflowers on it. Her hair is down and her feet are bare, though there are a pair of black high heels sitting under her chair. Like Romeo, she is looking down at her phone playing Angry Birds. Though instead of using a Galaxy 3, she's got herself an iPhone 5. Moral of the story, the fifteen year old youtube singer is much cooler than Romeo Stylez. Rebecca's concentration is broken for a moment when Romeo lets out an aggravated sigh. She looks up from her phone and over at her friend, who is shaking his phone like he's trying to strangle it.
Romeo: "Stupid pig why won't you just die already!"
Rebecca: "You should use the buildings to crush them. It's harder to hit the pig directly but if you knock a wall over you can flatten them like piggy pancakes."
The young youtube singer leans over and places her finger on Romeo's phone. She throws the angry bird into a wall, that collapses and squashes the pig. Romeo looks completely astonished, like he'd never thought of the idea of using the building as a weapon.
Romeo: "Woah that was amazing! I'd have never figured that out on my own. Thanks!"
Rebecca: "See this is the kind of stuff you need me for. Are you sure you wanna send me back to Hollywood?"
She looks up at Romeo with her puppy dog eyes, and as much as he'd like to keep her around he can't seem to make himself do it. He shakes his head no, and puts his phone up. He places his hand on her shoulder and the two have a heart to heart talk while they wait for her plane to begin boarding.
Romeo: "I've already kept you longer than I should. I stole you from your family for Christmas, and I've kept you to myself ever since. Erickson is gone, and Altzer doesn't seem to have any desire to hang out any more. But that's not a good reason to keep you away from living your own life. You've got your own career to look over. Your own dreams to chase. For me to keep you on the road with me week in and week out, keeping you away from the fans who want to hear your next song, and watch your next video..."
The Sensational One pauses for a moment, as he begins to wonder what Rebecca would have accomplished had she not been baby sitting him the past few weeks. Romeo hated feeling lonely, but he hated the thought of holding Rebecca back even more. She could have spent this time writing a best selling hit. She could have gone on tour with Justin Bieber, or One Direction, or some other popular pop star. Romeo shakes his head no, and picks back up where he left off on explaining why she had to leave.
Romeo: "I won't have you throwing away opportunities just so I don't have to feel alone traveling from city to city."
Rebecca slips her feet into the heels that were hiding under her seat, as she grabs Romeo by the hand.
Rebecca: "I'll never understand how somebody with as many supporters as you have could ever feel alone. I mean it's pretty clear the New Era Universe cares about you. You were a part of a feud that was voted as the feud of the year, and voted the best good guy along with Outkast. I mean Outkast was one of your super friends right? One of the guys you hoped to be as good as, and according to the rest of the world you're already there."
Romeo shakes his head no, and replies with a soft whisper that's difficult to hear over the chatter of everyone else in the airport.
Romeo: "Just another accolade I'm not worthy to hold."
Before Romeo can further drift into some kind of depression, Rebecca Black has gotten up from her seat, walked directly in front of him, and slapped him in the face as hard as she could. The slap was loud enough to silence all conversations going on by strangers nearby. It felt like the entire airport was now staring at Romeo and Rebecca, as Romeo rubs his cheek and looks up. Now instead of thinking about how inferior he is to Outkast, or how he failed to measure up as a wrestler, all eh could think about was why Rebecca slapped him. He didn't have to wonder for long, as Rebecca began to yell at him loud enough for those around to listen in.
Rebecca: "Now how am I supposed to go back to making music when you keep saying stupid shit like that!"
Romeo wants to speak up and chastise the young woman for using foul language, but he isn't given a chance as Rebecca continues her rant.
Rebecca: "I mean it's one thing to not want to be an arrogant jerk, but would it kill you to have a little bit of self confidence!? I mean you've got people like James Stall, or even your opponent Eric Donovan who walk around like they're the king of the world. Meanwhile all the fans who watch them show after show, and are forced to listen to them talk about how great they are, keep hoping that the man they really want to see will put on his big boy pants and shut everyone else up. Whether you like it or not Romeo, the people have chosen you and Outkast as their heroes. Outkast can't fulfill their wishes, he can't get up from the grave and win a world championship. He can't give these fans what they want, but you and I both know damn well if he had any say in the matter he'd still be here with us, with this company, giving everybody everything he had and then some!"
Up until now Romeo had been looking up into Rebecca's eyes, but as she continues to rip into him he can't help but lower his head and stare down at his feet.
Rebecca: "So what's your excuse for not being the hero these people want? What's your reason for taking two whole weeks to speak up to the fans who pay to see you entertain them? Is it a self confidence thing? Really!? There are millions, literally MILLIONS of fans out there that think you're the single greatest thing in New Era Wrestling. But you don't believe them do you? As humble as you try to be, you're essentially saying that you know better than all of your fans do. You think guys like Wildebeest, Tombstone, and this Eric Donovan are somehow better than you. That they're what's keeping you from being the biggest star this company has ever had. But do ya wanna know the truth?"
By this point, every person within a hundred yards is clearly tuning in on their conversation. Nobody is saying a word, as Rebecca puts her hand on Romeo's face and makes him look at her.
Rebecca: "The truth is the only person standing between you and greatness is you. That's why you need me with you. Because while I may not be able to help you beat guys like The Wildebeest, or Eric Donavan, I can sure as hell do my best to make sure you don't beat yourself. Your fans know you're capable of being the main man here in NEW. World Champion James Stall knows it, and you can bet your ass The Irish Dragon Eric Donavan knows it. There's only one more person on this planet who needs to learn just how good you are, and I'm looking at him right now."
Romeo and Rebecca look at one another, both on the verge of tears as the rest of the airport looks on. After a few seconds that felt more like an eternity, Romeo Stylez smiles and stands up from his seat.
Romeo: "You're right kiddo."
He places his hand on her shoulder.
Romeo: "I do need to find my confidence. But if I'm going to be the top dog in this company, I need to find this strength from within. I can't keep relying on someone else to pick me up when I fall down. The true greats in this business aren't pushed to the top from others. I've got to climb this mountain myself. I know in my heart if Outkast were facing Eric Donavan there would be no reason he couldn't defeat the number one contender. And if there are so many people that believe I'm on the same level he was on, then there's no reason I can't win Sunday Night."
Romeo removes his sunglasses, and his face seems to shine as he boasts even more.
Romeo: "Hell if I'm as good as everyone says there's no reason I should lose to anybody. It's a new year, a fresh start, and come New TV, I'm gonna start the new year off with a little Razzle Dazzle. I'll walk out of the arena undefeated, and I'll put on a streak twice as long as Tombstone ever could!"
With his chin up, and a huge smile on his face, Romeo puts his hands on his hips and looks around at the crowd of people, who begin to clap and cheer. Rebecca lunges forward and wraps her arms around him, squeezing him as tightly as she can. And just when it felt like this moment could last forever, it's all interrupted by an announcement from the airport speakers.
Speakers: "We are now boarding all first class passengers on flight K-12 to Los Angeles. I repeat, we are now boarding all first class passengers on flight K-12 to Los Angeles."
Rebecca is reluctantly to let go of Romeo, as she looks up at him smiling with tears in her eyes.
Rebecca: "Give em hell Romeo."
Romeo nods, as Rebecca heads off to catch her flight. The camera begins to fade, as Romeo watches her to make sure she gets on her flight.
Part Two: R-E-S-P-E-C-T find out what it means to me.
The scene opens back up, this time a much simpler location than before. Romeo is sitting in a small room. There's no decorations to the room, the wall behind him painted a boring shade of white. Romeo himself is now dressed in his in ring attire. A flashy pink and blue jacket, a matching headband, and his patented sunglasses. His lower body is not seen, cut off by the camera. The focus is on Romeo himself, and even through his sunglasses we can feel him staring a hole through the camera lens.
Romeo: Respect."
That one word is all Romeo says. He takes his time before he says anything else. Takes in a deep breath, and allows that one word to sink in.
Romeo: "When I was a young boy my father taught me there was nothing more important than respect. That regardless of what my dreams may be, or what goals I set for myself, that nothing worth gaining that was more valuable than respect. He also taught me the difference between respecting somebody, and liking somebody. There's nothing harder than respecting somebody you can't stand, he told me. That was a lesson I had to learn the hard way. It was a lesson I learned from our World Champion James Stall."
Romeo stops again, this time popping his knuckles. His mind wanders through the history he and James Stall share, before he goes back to making his point.
Romeo: "If I'm going to be honest, I have to admit that I don't like James Stall. Truth be told, I absolutely hate the guy. He single handedly made 2012 the worst year of my life. He won the affection of the only woman I ever felt like I loved, then put her in the hospital. He went even further when he injured interviewer Johnny Bloomers just for being friendly to me. James Stall is the sickest, more despicable human being I've ever met. But even after all he's put me through, he still has my respect."
Another pause in this speech, as Romeo rubs his chin as he re-lives every encounter he'd ever had with the World Champion.
Romeo: "The first thing to cause a rift with me and James Stall was jealousy. I wanted what he had, a beautiful girl named Nikki Blaine. As it became clear that I couldn't have her, I took the next best thing, his North American Championship. I walked into the ring after he'd just poured buckets of blood in the ring, and cashed in an opportunity for his title I had won earlier in the year. Ironically I won that right by beating the same girl I had fallen for. But even with him being injured, and even though I was envious of his love with Nikki, I still stepped into that ring with the utmost respect for him. I treated him as if he were at his best, as if he were the most dangerous man I'd ever encountered. Because of that I allowed him no chance to retain his title, and I won my first championship. Without that respect factor, I may have overlooked him. I may have allowed my emotions to leave an opening, and he may have defeated me right then and there. That would have put a quick ending to what eventually lead to New Era Wrestling's feud of the year."
Thinking about the first time he became a champion brings a smile to Romeo's face. The fact that he won it from a guy he didn't like made it that much better. But he continues his story.
Romeo: "So two weeks later, James Stall gets his rematch. Before the match happened he made it clear he wasn't happy with my decision to take his title while he was down. He was confident he'd put me in my place and win back what was his. Long story short, he showed me no respect. Meanwhile I prepared for the toughest challenge of my life, knowing damn well that James Stall with a chip on his shoulder is a dangerous man. That day James Stall was the bigger man, the more experienced man, but I managed to win again, and silence any critics who thought I didn't deserve to call myself champion. But up until then things were just business. Winning for the sake of winning, simply trying to be the best I could be. Then things go personal. James Stall took a sledgehammer to Nikki Blaine, and a Nikki Blaine once again chose another man over me. This time she chose Outkast, god rest his soul."
There's a small moment of silence for his fallen comrade. After time had passed Romeo realizes how childish he was last year. While it may not be good to have regrets, Romeo certainly wishes he could have done things differently back then. But you can't change the past, you can only learn from it.
Romeo: "So not to beat a dead horse, but Outkast, James Stall, and myself had what NEW considers to be the best feud of the year. It lead to a triple threat match at The London Brawl. After all the things that had happened, between James Stall hurting the ones I loved, to Outkast trying to teach me a lesson I wasn't ready for, it lead to me making a huge mistake. I had lost all respect I had for both of my opponents. I saw Outkast as a past his prime veteran trying to talk down to me like I was a little kid. Now that I think about it I wish I'd had just listened to him. But my disdain towards him didn't compare to the raw hatred I had for James Stall. Any respect I had for him and his accomplishments had died. I didn't care about how he restored the prestige of the North American Championship by battling through injuries at the first Secret Santa show. I didn't care about his family's legacy or the laundry list of wrestlers he'd taken out during his tenure in the company. The only thing on my mind was revenge, and I stepped into that ring with ill intent. I was stronger than I'd ever been, more motivated than ever before, but without the respect I had before I never stood a chance. I lost my title that night, but more importantly I lost a friend. It wasn't until a few weeks after his death I finally learned the lesson Outkast was trying to teach me that night."
Though we can't see Romeo's eyes through his sunglasses, we somehow know his eyes are beginning to water. He takes in a deep breath, and whispers a silent thank you intended only for Outkast. After a few more seconds Romeo regains his composure, and continues the tale that lead to a 2012 NEWBIE award.
Romeo: "With Outkast gone, New Era Wrestling needed a new North American Champion. It was no surprise they booked me and James Stall to battle at Vindication 3. With Outkast gone I hated Stall even more, but sharing Outkast's last sanctioned match with James Stall brought that much needed respect back. I can't speak on Stall's behalf on how he felt towards me before our last battle over the North American Championship, but I can guarantee if he didn't respect me before that match, he did after. I know this is all history and I haven't said anything you don't already know, but I'm hoping to instill a message with this story. A lesson that had to be taught to me the hard way. Do you understand what I'm getting at Eric?"
For the first time, Romeo mentions his upcoming opponent. It seems the history lesson was supposed to hold some sort of benefit for The Irish Dragon. But in case he hadn't caught it, Romeo was ready to simplify it for his opponent.
Romeo: "You can have all the skill in the world, the heart of a lion, and lady luck sitting in your corner but if you don't show your opponent some respect you don't stand a chance. Now don't get me wrong Eric, you have indeed showed me respect coming into this upcoming match. That's not difficult, I'm a pretty nice guy. People like me, and it's easy to respect somebody you like. What I'm referring to is your upcoming match with World Champion James Stall, the beatdown you received from him last show, and the words you had to say after you got up."
For those that don't know, James Stall was able to decimate Eric Donavan as the show was ending. Ofcourse it was done with a significant numbers advantage, and done after The Irish Dragon had already won two matches that night, but it happened none the less. But shortly after Eric and his allies were laid out, they recovered, got up, and had some choice words for James Stall and his crew.
Romeo: "Ya see you got pride Eric, and I'm not saying that's a bad thing but you somebody needs to warn you that pride can blind you. I can understand what it's like to be sent to the hospital from James Stall. In fact I've been in situations like you were in, the only difference is James Stall didn't leave me in a position to get back up on my own. You seem to think you were able to get back up in spite of James Stall and his attack. Let me tell you with complete certainty that you were only able to give that speech of yours because James Stall allowed you to."
It's possible that Eric Donvan may take that last particular statement as disrespectful. Romeo had no intentions on discrediting Eric's toughness, but one thing he had learned from his past with Outkast is sometimes to be the nice guy you gotta say the things people don't want to hear.
Romeo: "Ya should have stayed down Eric. You should have let James Stall get the last word, because guys like him don't stop until they do. Your a nice guy Eric, you really are. Without asking for anything in exchange you helped fine tune Jennifer Taylor, and soon she'll be fighting for her first ever title. You've got a group of people who care for you. Aurelie and your protege Trenton are usually a huge asset in this business. They keep you going when things are tough, they help you learn from your mistakes. But James Stall feeds off of nice guys with a group of friends. Everyone you care about is a potential target for James. And until you show James Stall some respect, until you swallow some of your pride, you are pushing James into a corner where he'll have no choice but to take out the people you love. And right now Eric, as talented as your are, and as focused as you are, you just aren't ready to protect them. You aren't ready to become World Heavyweight Champion."
Those last words had to sting the number one contender. The typically fun loving and gentle Romeo offers no apology for his statement, and refuses to sugar coat anything.
Romeo: "I like you Eric, really I do. You're stepping into your second World Championship match, and had I not passed it up I'd have shared your first. While I have just recently accepted the belief that I'm ready to be this company's World Champion, you've believed you were ready the moment you stepped foot in this company. Even now you're confidence is through the roof. You truly believe you are the greatest wrestler in this company, You implied that our World Champion is afraid of you. And even with the good intent of putting on a show, you have the audacity to ask me to bring my A game. Because if I come at my best, you'll beat me and prove what you believe, that you are the best."
Romeo rolls his shoulders and leans forward closer to the camera, as he says in almost a whisper.
Romeo: "You were right to believe I could be world champion. If I could take what I know right now, go back a few weeks to The Challenger Series, and keep the spot I earned when I beat Bombtrack, I'd be sitting here right now The World Heavyweight Champion. I'm sure you've watched all my matches, and paid special attention to those I had with James Stall, but understand that while those were the best matches of my life, the man I was then is nothing but a shadow of the man you'll be stepping into the ring with. I'm stepping into the ring to prove everyone who voted for me as Face of the Year right, and everyone who voted for James Stall as wrestler of the year wrong. I'm gonna be the man Outkast would have been had he not been taken from us before his time. I'm gonna be the guy who overwhelms you in a manner than not even Tombstone could. I can't allow you to walk away with a win Eric. I can't allow you to continue to walk around with your head in the clouds feeling so high and mighty that you look down at our World Champion. For your own good I'm going to beat some humility into you. And while the fans may love it, there are two people who are going to absolutely hate what happens between us on Sunday Night. Eric it's going to be hard, but I'm going to force you to understand that you're not ready. I'm going to teach you exactly what it takes to hang with a guy like James Stall. And as much as it's gonna hurt you, it's gonna hurt me even more. But on Sunday I'm going to do what I have to do. I'm going to prepare you for Stall the only way I can. Because this match between us at New TV."
Romeo removes his sunglasses, and there's a fire lit in his eyes as he stares into the camera.
Romeo: "This means something."
As soon as he finishes his sentence, Romeo crushes the sunglasses in his hand, gets up out of his chair, and walks off. All we see as the camera fades is the boring white wall that was standing behind him.
