Returning to a job isn’t always the most pleasant experience. There are usually two outcomes when making a comeback. You’re either welcomed back with open arms or you are shunned until going back to where you came from. In the wrestling business, it isn’t as simple as that. In fact, it isn’t simple at all.
I slowly walked up the ramp, turning to look back at the fans, experiencing all of this for the first time in over three months. It was something I couldn’t explain, something I never expected to feel again. I was in pain, but it didn’t stop me from smiling when looking at the fans as they were cheering me. After everything I had done to them in 2012, they still had my back, something I didn’t deserve from them.
I walked through the curtain and immediately knelt down onto the ground, still in pain from the shot to the groin I took from RAW Randy Altzer. When I made my return tonight, I honestly wasn’t expecting to get into an altercation, but I’m not surprised when it comes to a man like RAW. He’s a man who needs to look in the mirror and see what he has become.
Jimmy Helmsley: Good thing I’m single.
I smirked at my own joke that I mumbled as I pulled myself to my feet. Many people were looking at me as I stood in the walkway. Most were probably wondering why I returned because I’m sure I was the last person they expected to walk into this arena tonight. I wonder if I was getting the shunned experience of the return.
However, as I started walking through the crowd of people, I was getting more pats on the back then cold shoulders. They were actually welcoming me back to the fold. After taking leave from the company back in September, I didn’t think I would ever return to the company. Others believed the same, but I didn’t give them reason to think otherwise. Maybe it was the holiday season.
I thanked a few people and turned around and came face to face with Bombtrack. He was the last man I was in the ring with when I took my leave of absence. We made peace with one another because after what I went through, there was no reason to hold grudges. It just wasn’t worth it anymore. Standing here face to face with him now, I questioned that feeling.
Jimmy Helmsley: Can you say, awkward?
We both shared a laugh as I extended my hand to him. Instead of shaking, he pulled me in for a hug.
Jimmy Helmsley: I forgot you’re into hugging now.
Bombtrack: It’s good to see you, Jimmy.
Bombtrack was getting ready to face James Stall in a Hell in a Cell match. He had a lot to get ready for, yet came to see me and welcome me back. He’s changed a lot in the past year.
Jimmy Helmsley: Good to see you too, Chris.
Bombtrack: I knew you would find your way back sooner than later.
Jimmy Helmsley: I guess I just can’t stay away. You know the feeling.
He nodded his head, laughing in the process.
Bombtrack: Some people are just born for this business. We’re just two of those guys.
I didn’t want to agree with him, but I knew he was right. There had been several times in the past few years that I had tried keeping my distance from this business, yet failed at every attempt. I had been in the wrestling business since I was 18 and it had given me some of the best moments of my life, but it had also given me some of the worst.
Bombtrack: I was sorry to hear about…
I cut him off before he could finish his sentence.
Jimmy Helmsley: Good luck in your match, Chris. Stall’s a tricky bastard; don’t let your guard down.
With that, I patted him on the back and continued on my way. I could feel him staring me down from the back, but I never turned my head back towards him. He knew it was a sore subject, but he was trying to be nice and pay his respects. I got a few more pats on the back before finding my locker-room. I entered the room and found my sister, Ashlie, sitting on the bench watching the entrances for the Bombtrack and James Stall match.
Ashlie Helmsley: Great comeback bro.
Sarcasm. That’s my sister for you.
Jimmy Helmsley: I probably deserved it for some of the stunts I pulled this year.
She looked at me with a questionable look.
Ashlie Helmsley: Probably?
Jimmy Helmsley: Fine, I definitely deserved it for my actions of this year.
She smirked and turned off the television.
Ashlie Helmsley: So how’s it feel being back?
She asked a good question. I wasn’t sure if I had the answer for her quite yet.
Jimmy Helmsley: It’s different. I’ll say that.
I think she knew what I was referring too. There was new management. There were people gone that I deeply missed. It probably would never be the same again, but I knew that when I agreed to return.
Ashlie Helmsley: Have you spoken to him yet?
Jimmy Helmsley: Who?
Ashlie Helmsley: Don’t play dumb. I’m talking about Troy.
She was referring to Troy Turner. There’s a story to my return that people don’t know about and it has to do with Troy Turner.
Jimmy Helmsley: I don’t know if he wants to talk to me. Look at what happen to the guy. He was taken out and I wasn’t there to help him.
Ashlie didn’t say anything. Some people would expect her to say that it wasn’t my fault or that I couldn’t be everywhere, but she knew the story, she knew that I could have prevented what happen to him.
Jimmy Helmsley: I’ll get around to it. I think it’s just going to take awhile.
Ashlie Helmsley: I guess it’s up to you to finish what he started.
Jimmy Helmsley: That’s the plan. I’m just looking forward to what the new boss has in store.
It wouldn’t be my first battle with an owner of this company, so it wasn’t anything that I couldn’t handle. Still, with Ashlie bringing up Turner, I thought about what I could have done to help him. If I’m being honest, it’s probably the main reason I am back. And I can’t even look him in the eye in a New Era Wrestling arena and say thank you.
Ashlie Helmsley: At least something’s in NEW won’t ever change. RAW Randy Altzer will forever be a huge tool.
Before I could even respond, there was a knock at the door. Ashlie walked over and answered it. It was one of the road agents. He handed her a note and she looked at it and smiled.
Jimmy Helmsley: What’s it say?
She handed it to me and I started reading.
Ashlie Helmsley: Looks like you’ll be making your return to the ring sooner than you thought.
The note said that I would be in action on the first NEW TV of 2013 against RAW Randy Altzer. Randy was the guy that took Turner out, so it was suitable that I settle the score with him in the ring. It wouldn’t be my first match with him nor would it probably be my last.
Jimmy Helmsley: I think it’s time for someone to start showing Mr. Altzer the error of his ways. I didn’t have many people helping me earlier this year when I was acting crazy and it took a few months of clarity to find myself again. I owe it to myself and to RAW to help him out.
Ashlie Helmsley: The guy’s a scum bag. He doesn’t care about anyone except for himself. He has alienated himself from everyone who ever cared for him. He doesn’t deserve any kind of sympathy.
I thought about what she said and while most of it was true, I couldn’t completely put the guy down. I had watched NEW over the past few months. He had tried to change, but sometimes it’s really hard for people to complete the change. I think in Randy’s case he didn’t believe he could be a good man.
Jimmy Helmsley: Don’t judge him. He’s a human being just like you and I. We make mistakes. We struggle with life. Everyone has their way of adjusting. You and I look at the positive aspects of life while RAW is a guy who doesn’t see any kind of positive in his life. He sees the people in his life as if they are out to get him. Nobody will ever be on his side in his head.
Ashlie Helmsley: Except for that little weasel, Mac.
She was referring to the relationship between the new owner and RAW. That’s another story for another time.
Jimmy Helmsley: Tonight was only the beginning. I wanted to make a point to RAW and that’s exactly what I did. He acted out, which meant I got in his head, so mission accomplished. He’s going to get what’s coming to him, but along the way, I’m going to do my best to help him. It’s the least I can do.
Ashlie Helmsley: You don’t owe him anything.
She turned and walked out of the room. She was wrong though. I do owe him something. I owe everyone in New Era Wrestling something. 2012 was a terrible year for me. I was a jerk to the people I cared about. I lost important people that I’ll never get back. This was a new beginning. I owe everyone a chance, including RAW Randy Altzer, even if it doesn’t look like he deserves it.
